the sartorial equivalent of phoning it in.

    • 3boysful

      EXACTLY.

      • DyanSwan

The results of Cate’s phoning it in is often better that most people’s try hard.

    • gotgreyhound

Plus, before I saw the side view I thought, “Wow, she has really built up her trapezius muscles!”

    • MacrameTrumpToupee

Why, when lady stars are actually IN the Southern hemisphere, don’t they wear all the lovely summer dresses they keep parading in deep winter in the Northern hemisphere? You’re finally in a climate where you can break out soft, floaty summer wear and you wear a heavy, black, high-necked dress? WHY??

  • Karen B

I can’t see her knickers, so simple elegance is a win for me.

  • Alaska Raptor Rehabilitation

Love the earrings, the dress is fine. I’d like to see it from the back, it looks like there could be something interesting going on there.

  • Charm City

    unequivocally love this.

  • CPK1

her face is simply stunning in that first shot

    • kimmeister

As is her hair. In the closeup, though, she’s kind of giving crazy eyes.

  • Shawn EH

Robin Wright, do not get complacent in your day job! Cate is coming for Kevin Spacey, any day now! Fierce!

  • charlotte

The earrings must be *thisclose* to succumbing to magnetism. Clink!

  • Froggae

This is why Cate is the master. Those earrings and that cuff just need a simple elegant dress to set them off, and BOOM!

  • SewingSiren

This is an what is known as an “investment piece”.

  • SylviaPearl

    Love!!!!

  • tryinnottobetoojudgy

Not a thing wrong with that. She looks beautiful. It doesn’t always have to be a showstopper. This is quiet elegance done right.

  • Imasewsure

Simple… elegant… good enough… especially this week with so much ass (and disappointment) on the RC

  • numenah

Chic. The earrings hang too low, though, and she must give up that nude lip she’said been sporting lately.

  • sundaynightaddict

I feel like I really need to see the back of this to properly judge!

    • MissAmynae

Same here. There’s something going on back there. I’m hoping backless, because the front is so stark and simple.

      • Laraine

It is somewhat backless – deep cut, sort of cut like a blazer worn backward? You can see the high neck is like a popped collar, and from the back you see what looks like lapels… has a bit of 3-dimensionality. Look on Getty or Red Carpet Fashion Awards!

        I love it.

        • MissAmynae

Hello, fellow RCFA fan!! It really is lovely. The simplicity suits her so well. I get disappointed when simple garments like these are called “boring.” There’s bland, then there’s classic elegance. The jewelry brings it to a modern place.

  • Judy_J

    Yes. This.

  • Lily

If you replaced the fabric shoulder wings with cymbals, she could play a tune as she walks down the carpet.

A bit blah for Queen Cate.

  • SugarSnap108

It is neither sheer nor underwear posing as outer wear. WIN.

  • quiltrx

Very elegant…great accessorizing. I wish there were a full-back picture, so I can see what’s going on with that appears-to-be-backward collar.

  • Sumatra

It looks like all the “design” is in the back.

  • boweryboy

Usually when she wears something as basic as this she brings it with an amazing statement necklace. Cate, you disappoint.

  • MilaXX

I like the dress and cuff, but I think the earrings are fighting the neckline a bit for attention.

  • Loladog10

I know Helen Mirren is the Queen of Everything. But all hail Cate Blanchette, Supreme Ruler of Everything Else.

  • Meg

A simple elegant look from Cate. Thank God!

  • evave2

Those are great earrings, I am glad you highlighted them.

  • Truthiness2U

I like simple, elegant, flattering dresses, and this is one. The earrings of course, give it a needed pop, but don’t overwhelm. I like it.

  • KimThore

Love it. In a red carpet world of drapery ties for hair and ripped up lace blouses this is clean, simple elegance. The earrings are fabulous.

  • Janet B

    I really like her hair.

  • marlie

Simple and chic and perfect for Cate.

  • Fred Vaughn

    Relaxed, for a change.

  • Rhonda Shore

i have a similar dress yet i don’t look impossibly chic in it…

  • LaSylphide

Love the wrecking ball earrings; she could knock down a couple of buildings with those things.

  • Gatto Nero

    Cool, effortless elegance.

  • Kaonashi

I would love to see the back of this. It looks marvelous!

  • Belle239

Well now THAT was boring. But, it still is elegant.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

    head is lovely

  • semigeekgirl

I don’t mind simplicity but I think that the (open?) back is doing something funky to the front neckline. It makes her shoulders look very sloped, which I don’t like.

  • Dullsville.

  • LadyVimes

I want to see the back. Love the earrings.

  • Rule #1, don’t wear earrings that whack you right in the tricky neckline.
