She wore another weird front armor kind of thing to the Oscar’s once. It does her no favors.

  • boweryboy

The pants are kind of iffy but she had me until I got to the shoes.

    • 3boysful

I thought “horrible shoes!” as I scrolled down, then saw they were Cassedei. I never like that brand.

    • Mary from Boston

Yeah, the shoes were my buzzkill here. As they’re shown in the photo by themselves they aren’t AWFUL, but on her feet they go straight to “grandmother’s shoes” territory for me

    • HighFashionJunkie

yeah, those pants seem to undervalue the exquisiteness of the blouse and those shoes, OMG, totally wrong.

  • formerlyAnon

Scoll down no. I wasn’t loving it – on the unwieldy side – but was willing to give it a chance if the stiff and over-burdened with floral-ish folds bodice was balanced by a long, simple gown. Topping the slacks – no way.

    • AlisonHendryx

same same same. I was willing to give a chance.

    • 42Sh

Me too! I tought this was pretty from the waist up, but no to the ill-fitting trousers and granma shoes!

  • GemFemme

Does anyone know what material the top is? Cause to me it looks like landscape fabric you put down to keep weeds from growing!

    • Sennalina

It looks like hat material to me.

  • willworktomorrow

    Gorgeous. She defines elegance.

  • In_Stitches

She’s pulling it off. I love it actually. It feels like costuming for a movie set in the desert, with a bit of a sci-fi feel. This wouldn’t be out of place in a remake of Dune. My only complaint is that the shoes shouldn’t match the texture of the pant. In a matte fabric, they’d be perfect.

    • Carly Clement

i think the cuffs add to the sci-fi feel

    • livesarah

I’ve been working backwards from her baby poo/burns victim suit, so this is a win by comparison, for sure!

  • JerFeist

The treatment on the collar is great (interesting folds are a fashion weakness for me) but the fact that it’s a top makes the whole thing look like a decorative napkin.

  • Anna

Cater waiter pants, folded napkin top and shoes are all a NAY.

I’m OK with the Wonder Woman cuffs.

  • Jangle57

I found the top interesting, the pants iffy and the shoes just a big ‘ol needle scratch.

    • Wink

Scrolling from head to toe, it just kept getting worse.

    • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

The pants… we can’t even see them that well. Are they velvet? She’s standing like they are bunching up in the butt.

  • Gatto Nero

I love the drama of the top half, but the pants let the whole look down. Odd shape and fit.

  • IRVN

    I wish it was a dress…

  • MannahattaMamma

I guess she chose the shoes bc they replicate the shape of the top? Is that a reason to choose a pair of shoes: match them to your less than fabulous shirt? Pains me to say it but she’s a Glamour don’t, here.

  • marlie

The top half is great. The bottom half… not so much. The pants are *terrible.*

    • 3boysful

I’ll see your terrible pants and raise you horrible shoes! Blech.

  • ashtangajunkie

She looks fab from hair to waist. Then those pants ruin everything and the rest of the outfit never recovers.

    • luludexter

Yes. It’s the pants. The top would work with a long skirt. And those shoes – they may or may not be cute, I don’t know, but they definitely don’t work with pants.

  • numenah

I like the top a lot, but the outfit would look better if the pants were the same fabric. The velvet seems too heavy, imo. Don’t care for the makeup either. The smokey eye is too black, and she should never wear a nude lip with black (if at all). Still a small in, though

  • Bernd

After 60 years in showbiz C.B. receives her honorary Oscar. Makeup, hair and shoes are incredibly aging.

  • Jessica Freeman

    ….I like the top half.

  • Jaeda Laurez

this is scroll down fug. I was SO prepared to like this from the waist up.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Her head is promising things her outfit can’t deliver.

  • semigeekgirl

    Scrolldown fug. 🙁

  • DarthVadersCats

I love the top and I’m okay with the matchy cuffs but the pants, shoes, makeup and hair need to go. I’d prefer something fiercer on the face and sleeker pants but man I am LOVING that top

  • Diane

I want to like this but I can’t bring myself to do it.

  • MilaXX

Interesting but something about the pants and shoe aren’t quite working for me.

    • kimmeister

The pants are the wrong shape for me. Either cigarette or wide/straight leg would’ve been better.

  • NeteH

My eyebrows go up as my scrolling goes down.

  • Gatita

    Not even you, Cate.

  • Jen Alien-Spouse

Bad Shoes! NO, leave Cate alone! Go to your basket!

  • Tiff79

Fooled by the thumbnail once again. I love Cate but just can’t with this.

  • StrictTime

Looks like something off PR. And that’s not a compliment.

  • JasmineAM

her makeup gay needs to go back to school and learn how to apply mascara.

  • Imasewsure

I was set to say this is one of my favorite gowns of the season… and then I scrolled down to ugly pants… oh well, the top half is gorgeous

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Are those harem pants?

    • BrooklynBomber

      No.

  • BrooklynBomber

Hmmm….scroll down disturbance. When I thought it was a skirt I was okay with it.

  • Sekhmet6

Is this mismatch day? First Rooney, now Kate. Should they switch tops?

  • steph

The shoes are a big fat no for me.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    Scroll down fug 101

  • Kimmy

The top and the bracelets really works for her; the pants are horrid; the shoes are a mismatch for the outfit but might be cute with a skirt/dress.

  • evave2

I really like the top. Most of the time the top would look too ‘busy’ but to me the left shoulder just has interest to it and I find it rather beautiful.

    I like the shoes.

But I think the black pants jar somewhat, they look like too many shade of the same color.

  • IAmJ

I think it’s best that we forget about this and move on.

  • Snailstsichr

This outfit appears to be wearing her. A rare miss.

  • alyce1213

I think this is extremely elegant and unusual and pants! But I don’t like those shoes with it.

  • Eric Stott

With all that going on up top the pants are a bit of an anticlimax

  • oohsparkley!

    So disappointing.

  • MartyBellerMask

Ooh, so close. Tuck it in, and we might have something.

    • Qitkat

Oh, I don’t know…it’s like it needs that point for a counterbalance to the frou-frou. And just how does the designer accomplish that swoopy-foldyness anyway? Is is molded and stiff, or glued or stitched or?? Or has to be re-arranged each time she moves? The element looks slightly different on the model.

  • MomoSaidSo

In front of a black backdrop, all those pants say to me is: “Stop. Hammer time.”

  • E. D.

Makeup seems too pastel for this outfit.

  • BobStPaul

I really like this on her – especially the top. And I really like her hair and make-up. Can’t tell about the pants since there’s no really good photo of them.

  • I was really hoping this was a skirt; slacks were a disappointment. I also think her makeup is not doing her any favors—awfully pale.

  • Needs better pants.

  • frosty dufour

Waist up perfection, waist down sads.

  • anyess

    Shiny-matte-argyll socks.

  • Judy_J

I wish she wasn’t standing against a black background. I’d like to see more detail. I feel certain the pants must fit better than they look in these photos.

  • rkdgal

As with the rest of you, this is a scrolldown fug. Her headsuit is flawless. Is her hair considered blonde or strawberry blonde? Whatever it is, I want it for myself!

  • Ssquared1105

From the thumbnail I was wondering why this wasn’t a WERQ… then I scrolled down.

  • beckly

She’s making that emergent 70s hair-over-ear thing work here, probably because she only risked one side, but I fear for lesser beings taking it on.

  • Kaonashi

Pretty, until I got to the shoes. No, gurl.

  • DrMomLovesLife

Amazing – from the ankles up!

  • KayEmWhy

Yes she can! I love this on her.

  • Sumatra

    Nothing but class…

  • PrincessPea

Those are some old lady feet. Not sure about the pants, either.

    • Shawn EH

When is a ruffle not a pussy bow? When it’s a shoulder fold? This is a miss for me, but I’ll deny it if asked. Great face though!

  • Winterlight

I’m not feeling it. Sorry, Cate.

  • Meg

I’m a bit iffy on the shoes but I love it feet up! Something’s wonky with her makeup too and I can’t put my finger on it but it’s not as horrible as the Givenchy pyjama look

  • Truthiness2U

I hate the shoes, but really like everything else. Those shoes are totally a needle scratch.

  • Nerka2

I love it. Elegant but unique. Very pixiesque.

  • strawhat, with sleepy cats

She’s fab, no doubt, but boy oh boy, unrelieved black is hard on someone as fair as she is, especially under harsh lighting like this (I’m even paler, so I can talk.). A brighter lip and a bit of blush would make a big difference. The extra-neutral makeup under that light makes her look either anemic or jet-lagged.

Yep, stylist screwed up here. The goal was pearly, but the look turned out pasty.

  • Carla_Charlton

    Geez…not THOSE shoes with that.

  • Tarquin

    Those shoes. Those trousers. NO.

  • conniemd

Seems like we see Cate in a lot of Armani.

  • Dan_In_NYC

She had me till the shoes.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

If it were a gown it would be stunning.
