It took us a minute to come around on this one, but we think we kind of, sort of like it. If nothing else, it’s unusual, and after years of assessing an endless parade of gowns and cocktail dresses of the standard variety, we tend to sit up a little straighter when someone tries something different.

It’s reading like late ’70s glam, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s an unusual floral against a brilliantly colored background, which tends to make it stand out on the red carpet. The shape is somewhat reminiscent of a bathrobe, however. Adding a belt didn’t mitigate the effect all that much, it just created a slightly odd and focus-pulling shape at her waist. And frankly, that curly hair is a bit aging on her. We’d think a dress with a retro feel like this one requires more modern styling.

So yeah, we said we liked it and then we listed all the things we don’t like about it. But we still kind of like it, strangely enough. It’s a look that definitely needs some tweaking but we appreciate the attempt.

Love the color, love the shape, but the hair is “whuuuut?”-inducing and the make-up is especially harsh for her pale skin. Still, it’s laCate, so hardly a misstep.

  • Nancer

I like this, but agree that the hair isn’t working. It looks like a wig with too much hairspray. The dress is pretty and unusual; I like the print!

    • livesarah

I think with softer waves the hair would have worked better. Maybe she just didn’t have the volume for it. Overall though, LOVE.

  • steph

I like the soft curls for a change. The earrings are to die for. Overall I like this look, for a change for Cate.

    • kimmeister

I like the hair too, but I’m not sure that it’s right for her. At least not with that makeup.

      • ireneY

Serious 80s vibe with the heavy makeup!

    • Cate does have an unblemished A-1 earring game. I still can see the opal beauties she wore when she got her Best Actress Oscar.

    • V No Privacy

Yes, I WILL accept those earrings please and thank you.

  • 3boysful

I’m getting a Blanche Dubois vibe from this. (Not a good thing.) I like the dress, but it’s a little fancy housecoat. The fabric’s too busy for the busy hair, which might look better with a simpler dress.

  • rumsey

The dress on the model has sleeves that end higher on her arms than where they hit Cate. Were the model’s arms too long, or would this look slightly different if Cate were wearing sleeves as the designed imagined? Because the fabric’s pattern is exactly the same on both women, I wonder if Cate is wearing the same dress as appeared on the runway: maybe there is only one that’s been made so far.

  • kimmeister

I quite like the dress. The front zipper is a little weird, but at least it’s not super visible.

    • Janet B

Front zippers always read casual to me, I really wish it were in the back

  • Karen B

As soon as I saw the dress, with the curls, I started singing 9-to-5 and picturing Jane Fonda.

  • Nappysue

I love the color and pattern of the dress, but agree that something is off. I thought it was the make-up, but it might be the hair. Now I’m worried because I have curly hair that I’ve been wearing straight, and today I was going to add layers and start wearing it curly again. What to do, what to do??

    • Saturnine

Oh do go curly! Just not like Cate here. Is the blond too brassy for her complexion/make-up? I too can’t figure out why the entire look is aging her terribly. Unless it is her “over it” expression, of course.

    • Gatto Nero

I say free your curls. Think of the time you’ll save! And you can always go back to straight if you don’t like it.

    • sweetestsith

I think the brassy color + heavy makeup + hair style makes the overall look somewhat heavy and weirdly wiggy. As a general rule, I don’t think curly hair is aging! This is just not an ideal combo.

      • higgledypiggledy

The wigginess of the hair and the heavy makeup made me feel like I was looking at someone in first-rate Cate Blanchett drag, not CB herself.

        • LisaS

I was just about to type the same thing. Total drag.

    • paginatrix

Curly hair is so damn fantastic. Rock it.

  • TerryMH

Mrs. Roper’s chicer younger sister. The two never got along, but at the end of the episode they learn they’re much more alike than they realized.

    • Wink

I like the dress, but your comment is hilarious!

  • Jessica Freeman

I love it all. Full stop. More curls, more often, Cate.

  • Gerry Coleman

You’re all blind. She looks FABULOUS!!!

    • makeityourself

I think she looks fabulous too. She just doesn’t look modern. I don’t know when that became a requirement of the red carpet, but this look just feels slightly askew for some reason.

  • Saturnine

I’m thinking that the dress is not her color. It kind of gives her skin a waxy, heavily made up tone. Unless she’s just heavily made up.

  • kittyvscupcake

Not liking the curly hair on her, but that dress is alright. She has such amazing poise though.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

  • Kris

It looks much better with a belt than without. She just needed to hoik it down a bit to smooth out the fabric. The hair doesn’t bug as much as the eye makeup, WAY TOO HARSH.

  • Grumpy Girl

The fabric reads a little cheap, the way it pulls and wrinkles. She did so well with satin in keeping it wrinkle free, that I want to blame the fabric+construction, rather than her.

    • random_poster

She obviously did not arrive at this event after a stand-up bus ride.

  • Belle239

Love it but I am a sucker for all things red. I quite like the curly hair, too.

  • Gatto Nero

It’s retro, and not in a good way.
Normally I’m all for curls, but this isn’t working for her. It occurs to me that her face is so gorgeously sculptured that the curls actually detract from her beauty. A simpler style that puts the focus on her features is much better on Cate.

  • Tricia Rose

I keep thinking she put it on backwards because of the zipper. I also think that’s why it has that weird front butt pouch over the belt that is kinda unflattering. shorter zipper, or flip it around and I’d LOVE it!

    • Shyla

      It does look backwards.

    • cocohall

I thought the same thing. Plus the pattern is not matching up in the front – and for high end fashion, you would think they could do a more artful job of laying out the pieces on the fabric – to me that sort of thing always reads cheap. But she is so lovely that she still looks beautiful.

  • Kent Roby

I love the retro vibe of the dress (I’m somehow seeing it as 70’s print on a 40’s silhouette), and I like the curls as a fun momentary change.

  • Michele M.

I have to disagree: I love the hair most of all! It’s a nice change for her.

  • gotgreyhound

I’m getting an Asian influence from the dress, actually. I kind of love it. And that’s an unusual orange-y red. Nice!

  • KateM

I love the dress, but would prefer her usual sleek head with it. Besides the curls, I also don’t love the smokier eye on her.

  • numenah

No. The hair looks wiggy to me, she’s wearing too much blush, and the dress is neither chic nor elegant. Bring back the real Cate, please.

  • stellavision

I’m here for it. All of it. The hair, too — perhaps because mine is pin straight and we always want what we can’t have.

  • Sagecreek

Interesting choice of dress, but I do find the hair and makeup aging.

    And where’d my avatar go?

  • GemFemme

I love everything about this look. The dress, the curls, the earrings, all really lovely.

  • semigeekgirl

The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. When I noticed the earrings, I was all in.

  • E. D.

Not 100% on the hair. Needs to be less structured/more movement.

  • Molly Flores

I like the color on her, but this looks almost costumey. At first glance I thought it was a photo taken from the set of her next film.

  • Miami Beach charity do.

  • J.W.

The only thing I see are those cheek bones.

    • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

She looks so thin in that dress… I never noticed how slender she is.

  • boweryboy

I don’t like it but it’s working for me at the same time.

  • jonnyf8

I don’t know, when I first saw this I thought it was Violet Chachki.

  • Tanya Wade

It’s Judith Krantz miniseries realness and I am here for it! I think the curls lengthen her face, as opposed to aging it. I love the overall look, though, esp. those earrings!

  • GregoireNYC

Giving you Dyan Cannon 1979 realness.

  • Joséphine Marie-Louise Goldmun

I like the colour and the pattern, but with the zipper in the front and the strange bulge above the belt, it looks like she put it on the wrong way around. Which would also explain the strange wrinkles and why the fit in the bust is off… Just turn it around, Catie!

  • Sekhmet6

I think what is throwing me off with this one is her eye make up. I love the color and floral print on her.

  • Gatita

I love the color but the front zipper is what’s making it look like a bathrobe and the curls just don’t flatter her. I normally love curly hair but Cate can’t pull it off.

  • Poeta Paz

    Love this, hair and all!

  • SewingSiren

The dress is fabulous, the hair is a bit fake looking. A smoother 40’s do would of done nicely.

  • VCR1

I love this dress. She looks gorgeous!!!

  • KendraMR

    I love everything about this.

  • Imasewsure

Keep the dress… loose the (Bette Davis/Joan Crawford) head

  • Sennalina

I thought the flowers were jellyfish at first which made it a bit more interesting. Not her best, but not bad.

  • TamiSeattle

I think she has it on backward.

  • B_C_J

Love the retro feel of this look. She looks absolutely divine.

  • marlie

I really like the dress, the belt, the earrings, and her makeup. I’m not thrilled with Cate’s hair though; I agree that she needs a more modern ‘do. Something a little sleeker, and less stiff-looking.

  • Sarah Walsh

The midsection looks like my post-baby pooch spilling over the waistline of too-tight pants.

  • Bluenose Ghost

I can’t get over the fact that Armani would purposely design a pattern that matches (to my eyes) so poorly along a seam, and choose to feature that seam front and center on the dress. It’s making me a little twitchy looking at it.

  • BrooklynBomber

I like the dress, but the hair, my God! It turns the whole thing into a bad costume.

  • formerlyAnon

It all combines to give me a Helen Gurley Brown impression, which while it’s 1970s HGB, so not yet “well preserved-crone,” is still more than a bit Not Good.

  • EEKstl

I like this and she’s pulling it off. But amateurs need not apply.

  • AndieJay

I love it. She looks like a Bond villainess.

  • TheLaurenJean

I get the 70’s feel, but this to me reads much more late 1930’s fashion, and for that I love it.

  • MilaXX

I like it but it almost feels like a costume. If Cate was in American Hustle wearing this look I don’t feel like she would have been out of place. Not sure if that’s a god thing or a bad thing. I like the addition of the belt since it hides the elastic waist on the model’s version.

  • Little_Olive

I love it -there is a humor there, in its mix of Carole Lombard and a 70s hostess dress. Even the languid face is right.

  • LadyVimes

Kind of Katharine Hepburn-esq, but the hair could be in gentler curls.

  • Tuneful54

One step from Gloria Swanson in “Sunset Boulevard” or Bette Davis in “Baby Jane.”

  • oh vienna

Love it and I’m not sorry.

  • OrangeChia

There she is. Back again. Love.

  • tryinnottobetoojudgy

I don’t know why — and I don’t mean this to sound negative — but I immediately thought Stepford Wives when I saw this. Maybe it’s the 70s vibe….but she looks lovely, if somehow more sedate and contained than usual.

  • Heather

Great dress, but the hair is wiggy.

  • Diane

I do really like the dress but for some reason the hair/makeup is giving her such a harsh look. Those earrings are stunning!

  • VioletFem

I actually really love the curly hair, I think the way she normally styles it would have been a bit too prim. It’s a nice chance and it complements the dress quite well.

  • i’d like it more with a different neckline, something a little more open and relaxed. that smudgy liner under the eyes is definitely aging her.

  • somebody blonde

Something here is making her look like the most stylish lady in the Orlando retirement community. Not sure if it’s the hair or the makeup or the neckline, but whatever it is, it’s definitely aging.

  • sk8tfan

I love the color and the print but the way the fabric falls around the belt looks like a pair of droopy bosoms, which I don’t think was the intended effect.

  • IamstillAnonymous

I really do not like the zipper in the front. It looks like she put it on backwards–do I see a clasp at the top on her left side? The model’s wearing of the necklace turned around doesn’t help the situation.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

How cool would it be if she and Tilda Swinton remade “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?”

  • golden_valley

She has a fancy busy dress. She doesn’t need fancy frilly hair.

  • I like everything but the hair. I don’t like the color especially. Isn’t her natural color something else? I don’t really have a problem with the style if it were another color.

    • Tatiana Luján

Yes, this looks more strawberry blond than her usual colour

  • evave2

    Lovely color,.

  • ThaliaMenninger

That’s an interesting look for her. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her with her hair like that, and she seems to have rocked a lot of different hairstyles over the years. Not a fan of the hair. Or maybe it’s just that the vivid color of the dress makes her blonde look brassy. Either way, going with Jodie Foster hair from Taxi Driver doesn’t usually work.

  • DyanSwan

Best version of retro 1970s Halston-type glam that I’ve seen in a while.

  • Kaonashi

The dress is working. Unfortunately, the hair isn’t.

  • It’s a really interesting color and pattern but the hair makes her look like a mannequin at a really cheap mall store.

  • Janet B

Love the dress, but she looks stiff and uncomfortable.

  • MarinaCat

I really don’t like her head. She looks like the wealthy family matriarch on a daytime soap.

  • Agatha Guilluame

Are Claire Danes and Cate Blanchett ever going to do a movie together. Something about the complicated dynamics between sisters…basically a character study where they hurl words like weapons…

  • Ruby_Red

Like the dress, hate the hair. It look like a bad wig.

  • carolina_dawn

The belt covers the elasticized waist, which is a very good thing.

  • prettybigkitty

Love. I did a double scroll (digital double take) to absorb the fabulousness.

  • What is going on with her hair?!?

  • Kelly

This is giving me acid flashbacks to Nancy Reagan. Can’t deal.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the dress, but there is something weird with her makeup or her hair colour I can’t place

    • Stuart Miller

It is hard to say why that hair just doesn’t work. It’s like “that cannot be Cate Blanchett’s hair, it’s just not HER.”

  • SuzyQuzey

I like this! But the hair is weird.

  • musi_

    love! but needs different hair!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

the focus for me ought to be on the dress, and Cate’s curls are distracting me a bit, so I would have chosen a sleeker ‘do for her.

  • mrspotts66

luv. love all of it. the hair. the makeup. the dress.
    this makes me happy.

  • quiltrx

Makeup-gun dialed way too high…and with the ‘structured’ curls this is making her look really harsh. I like the dress and I agree that it needed different styling.

  • Post-divorce Bad Sandy at the Rydell High 20th class reunion.

  • Amel

Started imagining this with hair slicked into a ponytail. Looks pretty good in my mind’s eye

  • semper083

Like the print and 70s chic but agree that the hair and make-up are too old for her.

  • Julie

Love everything about the dress. Hair and makeup gun is set to “hedwig.”

  • Observer

I love it, full stop, including the hair

    • oneWEIRDword

Me too. Especially the glorious hair.

  • yethica

She looks like the queen of some 1975 crime family. I kind of love it for her.

  • stacey

My Nana’s hostess gown circa 1976, Pass the shrimp dip, dear.

  • Jenna

I thought she was Chad Michaels in the thumbnail. This face is not working for her.

  • Patty Frost

I .. Can’t … No. It’s not her. It’s never been her..maybe she’s evolving. I’m just not used to the hair. I don’t like judging people based on the persona they want to channel but this is so unsettling. Like a vocal hippie who wanted to change the world but is now a happily married homemaker with three kids who shops at Walmart. Mind you, that’s a perfectly natural scenario for millions of women but when you see the fiery, opinionated hippie do that you get flummoxed.

  • PeaceBang

I see that Miss Blanchett has seen that YouTube tutorial on hairband curls that’s all the rage right now.
