Charlize Theron in Christian Dior at the “Dark Places” LA Premiere

Posted on July 22, 2015

She’s had a couple red carpet triumphs along the way, but it’s time to admit that Charlize, for the most part, doesn’t have great style.

Well. It’s time for US to admit that. You are on your own timeline and we wouldn’t presume to dictate when your opinions are supposed to start lining up exactly with ours.

Anyway, our point is, she looks very pretty here but we pretty much hate everything she’s wearing or sporting. Such is the power of the Charlize.

The earrings are literally the only things we like here – and they’re totally wrong for the dress. The shoes we merely dislike. They’re not awful, but we’re not crazy about the putty color or the thickness of the straps. If you’re gonna totter around on the balls of your feet all night, at least do it for something pretty, y’know? As for the dress, we kinda hate it. The color scheme might look great on a darker skinned woman, but it’s eye-searing here. And we don’t love the shape of it. Not enough side boob coverage and the bodice seems to have erased her waist. The clutch is annoying. We’re about ready to start a bonfire for all these clutches that probably cost more than the average mortgage payment but nonetheless look like something you snap into your luggage.

But the hair is cute; we have to say. We’re over the red carpet braid trend, but she’s really pulling them off here.

Yes. I know we’re supposed to hate Pinterest hair, but I LOVE this hair on her. Think it’s totes adorbs and all that. But everything else needs to be shot into the sun with extreme prejudice!

  • sugarkane105

Buck up, kiddo! You lost your worst accessory (aka your ex-fiancé). Try a jewel tone next time and then we can talk.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Yes!!! No more Thug Monkey!!! 🙂

      • sk8tfan

God yes. She woke up the next morning after the bender and realized she brought the wrong guy home from the bar.

  • SewingSiren

Love the braids. The dress would be more suited to a petite teenager.

    • Kristin

Yes! I was thinking Elle Fanning.

      • AlisonHendryx

ack, idn’t see this before i commented, but yes, this screeeeams elle fanning.

        • littlemac8

I agree but it wouldn’t look good on Elle either!

    • J.W.

      I agree.

    • Sophie

A very petite teenager then, if it’s giving Charlize Theron an illusion of fat rolls on the waist.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes to the dress working for a petite teenage ladystar.

    • tereliz

Zendaya. She can make anything work and the colors would be great on her.

      • HarleyB

        Oooh…good choice.

    • livesarah

The bodice looks like Dr Zoidberg’s torso after he has moulted, therefore I contend that it’s nobody’s dress. Just because a Fanning sister would wear it doesnt mean they should!

      • Jess Ballinger

YES, YES IT DOES. You’re a genius.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I feel like Lupita could make that dress sing.

  • sutton

I will always love a braid, they are overdone but I don’t care. Those shoes make my feet ache simply looking at them.

  • TinyDynamo

I dislike what she has on, but somehow she is OWNING this look. It’s confusing bc no matter how much I dislike each part, I can’t help but look at the overall look and think she looks great. Dammit, Charlize!

    • abkells

She’s a stunning alien. She has a power that mere mortals can’t/don’t understand.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

As TLo astutely noted, this is the power of CHARLIZE. Like this look on her, and despair.

  • B_C_J

This is a very unflattering dress. It thickens her & makes her bust look droopy. The hair looks amateur or someone forgot to put the top up on the convertible on the way over.

  • Karen B

A dress that gives off a visual appearance of saggy boobs AND fat rolls… oh where oh where can I sign up for that trend

    • StellaZafella

      Alyssa Edwards: “BACKROLLS!?!”

    • PhillyDeb

And on a tall very thin model-like creature, no less!!

      • Cranky Boo Sez

She is a goddess. She’s my fence jumper. Hate the dress, shoes and hair, but LOVE her.

  • sienna elm

My biggest issue with the dress (besides the colours & shape) is the fact that it is so namby-pamby and seriously conflicts with the FIERCE that is Charlize Theron.

    • Carly Clement

and the irony that she is at the premier of a movie called Dark Places…..

    • Carleenml

Yes! My first thought – cutesy? wtf, Charlize, Goddess, STOP IT.

  • Everything about this from braids down looks like the sort of thing Diane Kruger would do. Which doesn’t necessarily make it good.

  • Housewives fan7404

These photos are genius. They capture the exact moment when a woman realizes she can no longer dress like she’s in her 20’s. The color is horrific, but it’s the silhouette that’s the real crime. Mutton dressed as lamb.

  • Fancy Mukluks

I’m just going to say it: there comes a time in every woman’s life when her chesticles need support. Even my mom (the original bra burner) has a bra (a sports bra, but it’s a baby step for her) for special occasions. That’s how my dad put it after I asked if she owned a bra, “Yes. She has one around here somewhere for weddings and funerals.”

    • AlisonHendryx

      your mom sounds awesome.

      • Fancy Mukluks

        Oh, she’s something, alright.

    • Sophie

I’m not sure she actually needs a bra, it might be just the dress giving off that impression.

      • Fancy Mukluks

You could be right. It’s not doing the model any favors, either.

  • NMMagpie

This is probably her insides showing in the outfit she’s chosen, I am thinking. She’s still Furiosa to me.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

That doesn’t stop the outfit from being MEDIOCRE! 😉

      • NMMagpie

        Touch&eacute. 🙂

  • conniemd

She is the most beautiful woman in America. Totally agree about the dress. No caucasian blonde should wear that gray/silver color.

    • Grey/silver?!

    • PhillyDeb

      isn’t it lavendar????

    • sundaynightaddict

Holy crap – are we having our very own Blue-Black/Gold-White moment? For the record, I see pink and yellow lol.

      • AlisonHendryx

NO. we are NOT doing that. this dress is pink/lavender and yellow. we are not going down that road.

  • Noah

Apparently breakups are hard on celebs too. Yikes.

  • mandocalrissian

My god, her feet are practically vertical. They’re like Barbie’s feet!

I can’t tell if a/a better bra was needed or if that dress is just a crime against breasts. As I tried to look at the color combination, it reminded me of those tricks you can play on the human visual system where you stare at an intense color pattern for 60 seconds, then look at a blank white space and see the reverse colors because you’ve fatigued certain receptors.

    • kimmeister

Maybe the steep angle is what is keeping her feet from sliding forward?

  • That dress is awful as sh*t! As it is the color combination. But what is worse, it’s the fit on her waist. What’s going on there?
On the other hand, Charlize is beyond beauty. Has she ever looked once ugly? I don’t think so.

    • She got an Oscar for looking ugly, that one time.

  • In_Stitches

The hair is fabulous. There are pinterest braids, and then there are braids like these that compliment the face and were designed with a bit of artistry in mind. Sadly, that’s where the compliments end. This dress is beautiful, but it’s doing nothing for her. Be a good movie step-mom and ship it off to Kristen Stewart, because she might be able to work it.

  • flamingoNW

Geez, hard to imagine this would be possible but that mini dress makes Charlize Theron of all people look frumpy. Quite a feat.

  • Lilithcat

That dress would be fine on someone who is 17. Charlize is not 17 anymore.

The shoes are boring, and they’re going to an entirely different event from the equally boring satin clutch.

  • teensmom99

T Lo’s commentary is making me think of the Jon Hamm character in 30 Rock who was so handsome he didn’t have to develop a personality or skills. Charlize is so beautiful and tall she never had to develop style. Don’t try this at home!

    • Little_Olive

Though exactly the same. Ah, the hidden blessings of not being gorgeous.

  • Is the dress supposed to be the opposite of “Dark Places”? It’s too early for this. I need caffeine.

  • rocketinu

I just don’t like this on her at all although I think she is just so beautiful! As someone else stated, the waist is funky. Her feet look tortured.

  • Lily

Neck up – perfect. Neck down – burn it all. This dress doesn’t even look good on the model. Sloppy fit overall and these colors are just not made for pale-skinned lasses.

  • steph

The bodice of this dress is making her look saggy boobed, and that is never a good thing. It looks like someone trying to look young, the bag is awful and of all the Giuseppe Zanotti shoes out there, you pick the most basic, boring pair? Ugh. Start over again please.

  • Sanglots longs

If my daughter wanted to buy that dress at Forever XXI, I’d let her. [~~faint praise~~]

  • DyanSwan

Time for Ms. Charlize to start wearing an underwire push-up bra?

  • Edie Rose

I refuse. Giant ‘diamond’ studs are always appropriate. What is this “not right for the dress” business?
I defer to your expertise on everything else.

    • julnyes

perhaps because the dress reads a bit casual to me and those earring call for a gown or a sharp pantsuit.

At least that is why I think they don’t work together.

  • Belle239

She definitely has the beauty genes……such an absolutely gorgeous woman. Hate the dress.

  • annachronizm

agreed. Charlize needs her assistant to call up a messenger and send it to Lupita stat.

  • papillon

That dress is really doing nothing for her and the colour is completely wrong for her skin tone. But she is a stunning woman.

  • Charlotte

I would see this dress on chole moretz or Elle fanning, just not on Charlize..Girl….this is not your dress.
as a matter of fact,I was trying to suppress my gag reflection right now.

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

That dress would look great on Zendaya though.

  • Norse Code

That dress! It burns us!! It burns us, precious!!! Hissssssssssssss

  • SummerSquash

Dress is horrid. Hair is adorbs.

  • GemFemme

When I look at this dress, Charlene is one of the last celebs I’d think this would look good on. Maybe Zendaya?

  • quiltrx

That really is a terrible dress. Her RC style to me is usually very classic–she has such an elegant look and bearing that she can get away with not being too exciting fashion-wise. But see…THIS ick is what we get when she steps out of her comfort zone!

  • Jaeda Laurez

Does this count as “resting on pretty?” I hate that dress, the shoes don’t mean anything one way or another, and the clutch is another Aldo’s special.

    • Sophie

I think she put in effort, so it’s not resting on pretty. Which might have been the better choice in this case.

  • marlie

From the neck up, Charlize looks very pretty. From the neck down… that’s a pretty weird, ugly little dress. I’m not offended by the shoes, but yes, that free-with-purchase clutch needs to be set on fire.

  • AlisonHendryx

This dress is supposed to be Elle Fanning’s mistake, not Charlize’s. UGH.

  • SugarSnap108

What a dubious accomplishment. They’ve invented the dress that can make Charlize Theron look dumpy.

  • Terrible color for her. And something wrong in the fit of the bust.

  • Cupcakes for Breakfast

That dress is amazingly ugly and does awful things to perfect bodies (both Charlize and the model).

  • Boulderista

That dress looks awful on both Charlize and the model.

  • Gatto Nero

The dress isn’t just wrong for her, it’s unambiguously hideous.
It should be easy for her to get it right, yet she so rarely does.

  • semigeekgirl

I’m okay with everything except the fit of the bodice. I don’t *like* the color, but I don’t think it’s clashing with her makeup or skin tone, so it’s fine. But the fit through the boobs is weird and perplexing.

  • Diane

I don’t like the dress at all, but I do like her hair and the shoes aren’t so bad. But this is Charlize, she can be in a horrid outfit but you still go wow, it’s Charlize.

  • Terri Terri

She always looks better without Sean Penn by her side. Thumbs up!

  • cocohall

This is what I call a “Deflataboob” dress. It looks like airbags after a crash. Why would anyone, much less Charlize want to wear this out in public? I suppose if you had fake, gravity-defying boobs, one might be able to pull this off. But then there is the issue of the color. And the silhouette. This looks like something you’d find in Target’s junior department for 14.99, and quite possibly marked down to 7.99 on the sale rounder. But Christian Dior? That’s just tragic.

  • Honestly all I took from this is that I need to read Dark Places ASAP.

  • Judy_J

That is one sad little dress. I’m depressed just looking at it.

  • Huy

    How Dior has fallen.

  • Ashleigh

Why would anyone design OR wear a dress that has built in belly rolls – and zero boob support? It’s horrible

  • Because every tall, toned, and lean woman wants to give herself the illusion of rolls around her middle. Nailed it.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Charlize, that is not your dress.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I”m liking Charlize’s hair, face and earrings. I’m not liking the dress on her at all.;the shape and feel of the dress aren’t flattering to her.

  • sagecreek

Oh, dear. Charlize Theron with saggy boobs? (Not body shaming, just pointed out the the combo of the bodice and the lack of appropriate undergarments is less than flattering.)

  • Janet B

Neck up she looks pretty, even with the pinterest braids.

  • Shyla

I think a lot of things look good on her just because she is tall and thin, not because she wears great things. This is not good. The braids look good because they’re pinned up and not a messy braid.

  • Miss wks

It’s an ugly dress (even on the model) and those shoes make her feet look deformed…

  • ThaliaMenninger

I love her hair, although it seems unduly complicated. Still, it’s interesting as a braid idea that isn’t same old/same old and it also looks good on her. But the dress is just vile. The color alone is such a bad idea and the ruffly tiers… Yeah, no.

  • susan6

That twee little dress is meant for a 16 year old, and those shoes look like they’re made of rubber. I like everything above the neck, but for the rest, go home and try again.

  • happygolucky7

If a dress looks unflattering on Charlize Theron, it’s time to burn it to the ground and scatter the ashes. It’s fit for no human woman.

  • Nerka2

Where does the skin end and the dress begin?

  • Carrie

She’s so darn pretty, I’m hypnotized and don’t see that awful dress.

  • traceyishere

Her boobs look so sad, like a super-model.

  • MightyMarshal

If this dress had been rendered in a cobalt blue with deep purple…swirling and had her shoes been in a grey or silver, this would have been greatly improved. But she’s Charlize Theron. She can wear anything and it looks stunning and chic. She’s a bit like a lighter version of Angeline Jolie in that. There is a class of celebrity that has such striking features that they can make the most absurdly ugly things look chic. Gwen, Charlize, Angie, Naomie Harris. They can get away with hanging any old dress on their body and pulling it off against all odds. In other news, what kind of tragedy are the shoes on that poor model. TF happened to her.

  • KTBSN

The boob darts are weird. The model doesn’t have weird boob darts but Charlene does. Otherwise I like the colors on her, very pretty. I hate most shoes I see on the red carpet and same goes for these.

  • Little_Olive

What is she, 7 feet with those heels??
I would actually like the shoes were it not for the ridiculous height. It’s an improved take on the “nude” shoe that we see everywhere.

  • Steph

She’s on my irrational hate list. She’s gorgeous but terrifying. She did too good a job in Young Adult, and now that’s how I imagine her real personality to be.

  • EEKstl

She’s gorgeous and a living mannequin but she should not do flouncy.

    • Sekhmet6

Without my glasses, I thought you said “living marzipan” but that works too. Bad colors on her.

  • MilaXX

GTNYD. It seems like anytime a lady celeb wears color these days, it’s not her dress. I don’t dislike anything here, but I think the color is all wrong for her and I’m not sure the shape is working for her either. I think it needs someone browner and curvier to work.

  • Pennymac

I’m just going to concentrate on the neck up and pretend this didn’t happen. It’s surprising that pink and yellow can be described as “eye searing”, but that totally nails this color combo on her.

  • Psychic Muppet

Not to sound like a creep on the sidewalk telling women to SMILE, but I’m actually wondering–can she do it? Or is that just what happens to women when they go through the Sean Penn cycle (SPenn cycle)?

  • Susan Crawford

I actually like this dress, but it isn’t working on Miss Theron. She is one of those tall, stately, regal types who needs clothing (and styling) with a bit more gravitas. Meaning she can rock a strappy little number, but not necessarily in Easter egg colors. And if the uber-high heel goes any further, a whole generation of red carpeteers will be completely bedridden with bunions.

  • gotgreyhound

The length and flounces on the dress make it look kind of “ice dancer”. And the pink is too close to her skin color. And when your feet look that tortured, the shoes don’t look good anymore. But she’s so damn gorgeous, she’s almost pulling it all off!

  • I like the hair. I was all set to say something about her dressing as though she is still in her early 20s, but then I saw the light and realized that dress is just hideous at any age. I’m sure dozens of stylists would die to dress her, she should capitalize on that.

  • Pollynation

Nice dress for a 25 year old. There’s a tad too much side boob going on and it’s not becoming. Her face and hair, on the other hand, are flawless.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the hair and makeup and the sandals are her size.
If that dress is giving her abdominal lumps, imagine what it would do on anyone else.

  • Bowildhaze

I think she looks so much better than other red carpet forays this year – she ditched the annoying Sean Penn. Look how much she sparkles without him!

  • Gingerblu

It always amazes me that she can turn out so “blah”. She is freaking breathtakingly beautiful! How does she manage to take away her hotness?

  • CatLady

The yellow splotches on her dress make it look like she was wrestling a hot dog.

  • somebody blonde

I LOVE her hair. I’m willing to forgive everything else because her head looks great.

  • Nika E

Yuck to the dress but she is absolutely stunning. I girl crush her hard.
