Tony Awards 2015: Jennifer Lopez in Valentino Couture

Posted on June 08, 2015

Legendary Grande Dame of the American Theater Jennifer Lopez attended the Tony Awards last night, as one would expect from a stage actress of her magnitude and experience.

And she dressed appropriately. Well. Mostly.

She toned down her outrageous divatude, which is only good common sense, if you ask us. Had she breezed into this crowd in full drag armor and vestment like she was at the Grammys and up for Album of the Year, she would’ve been eaten alive. Those theater bitches don’t take kindly to usurpers, interlopers and thunder-stealers. Hence the Nancy Drew hair and the uncharacteristically twee quality of the dress. But just to remind us she’s J Lo, she put on 10 pounds of makeup and hoisted her boobs up as far as Jesus will allow. And it all works, actually. Know your venue but stay true to yourself. Primary rule of good style. Attalady.

Although y’know? We’re not sure this is a good shade of blue for her. She looks a little sallow in it.

I cannot thank you enough for the incisive mockery. The gods of comedy and tragedy are politely applauding from their orchestra seats. Nancy Drew hair, indeed. GET OFF THE STAGE, GIRL.

    • Mathilde

Damn, I actually really like the hair. I’ll freely admit that my personal style tends towards the spinster librarian, though.

      • Chickadeep

        Right there with you.

      • Sarah

I like the hair too. I think it’s so nice to see her looking sort of demure (for her, anyway.)

      • Rhonda Shore

I’m just ready to love her hair and not seeing her in a tacky see-through dress unconditionally. Except her facial expression in the next to last picture — old habits die hard.

      • PeaceBang

I like the whole look, truly. I just can’t separate the look from the person, and the whole idea that she was even there is patently ridic. Hence the snark.

    • D-Nice

The hair is “ok”. I don’t love it, but it’s fine. But the rest of the look is actually pretty great, even with the uplifted tits. Well done, JLO.

  • First of all… what was she doing there? I know she is a movie star, but has she ever appeared on a stage play? Anyway, the problem here is her make up. It’s way too heavy. Her boobs are about to sofocate her but the dress is beautiful.

    • Scarlett

      Harvey Weinstein paid her

    • Anne

And she was SO bad doing…whatever it was that she did…I watched the broadcast and I don’t even remember. OH, it was announcing Finding Neverland. The least they could have done was paired her up with an actual theater person instead of Nick Jonas.

      • gabbi

It sort of felt like the whole broadcast was nodding to the fact that they have to put all these Hollywood crossover types on to bring in the viewers and then skewers the whole thing by having Alan Cumming make threesome jokes and a very thinly veiled reference to the Bradley Cooper gay rumors. Considering the network constraints, I thought they generally balanced it well.

        • Anne

I mean, to be fair, Bradley Cooper was nominated for a Tony, and Alan Cumming has a Tony, whatever other stuff they’ve done. The only one that I really didn’t get was Jennifer Lopez, who has literally no connection that I know of.

          • gabbi

Right, but how many presenters were more Broadway than Hollywood? A handful? Tommy Tune, Joel Grey, Phylicia Rashad, Bernadette Peters, Rita Wilson? Most of the presenters deserved to be there and maybe even deserved to present, but on the balance, it would have been nice to see more prominence given to the people who have dedicated their lives to the stage, not the screen.

          • Anne

Agreed. I don’t really believe that enlisting bankable Hollywood stars to present awards gets anybody to watch the Tony Awards who wouldn’t already have been watching the Tony Awards, but there it is.

          • gabbi

I should note that I’m excluding Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth from that criticism. While they’ve both had screen success, they’re Broadway stars who sometimes go to the screen as a bonus/break from the 8-show-a-week rigor instead of coming to the stage looking for prestige.

          • Ind Prod

JLo did a song for the Broadway show Finding Neverland.

    • fiercediva

JLo and some other singers not in the production (John Legend, Rita Ora, Christina Aguilera, Zendaya to name a few) are singing on a companion album of songs from Finding Neverland that’s just being released now. It’s one notch of a reason to be on the Tonys above “because I’m a cast member of a CBS show.”

      • MartyBellerMask

Which begs the question, why was James Corden not there? He’s on a CBS show, and has an actual Tony.

        • Ind Prod

Because he’s kind of a pill and it turns out no one really likes him.

          • MartyBellerMask

Really. Huh. I hadn’t heard that one. I think he’s adorable and talented. ☺

        • fiercediva

I think Corden tapes at 4pm today Pacific Time, so maybe he couldn’t make it back to L.A. in time to prepare for it..

  • LondonMarriott

Literal stars on the dress **groan**

  • Coleen

I cannot with any of that look. Ship the dress off to Kiernan Shipka. There’s a good diva.

    • BayTampaBay

I agree! The idea was good but this dress does NOTHING for her.

I think the dress makes her look thick through the middle and over-weight which she is not by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Love it. She looks like a fairy godmother.

    • Lucía Gavello

You know she’d read that as “old as fuck”.

    • Vanessa Reyes-Weber

      Fairy Diva Godmother??

  • rumsey

Comparing the fit of the dress on the model and then on the celebrity: on the runway. the skirt looks as if it was meant to float gently and elegantly just above the floor. On JLo, it drags on the ground. Just one more example where the sample size hasn’t/couldn’t be altered to give a realistic view of the designer’s intent. On JLo, the skirt adds just enough weight to make the bodice seem all the more precarious.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Exactly! Way too much puddling!

      • Kelly

But at least the overly long hem obscures the writing on the bottom of the dress, which is probably my least favorite detail of it.

        • shirab

Can anyone tell what it says? Or are we better off not knowing?

          • Kelly

I’m guessing something inoffensive and unnecessary.

          • First of all–I am so impressed that my fellow BKs noticed that there was writing at the hem! What great eyes you all have, my dears! Regarding the words, I can make out only the one farthest to the model’s right, which looks like “finalmente”, the Italian word for “finally”. The one all the way to the model’s left looks like “sole”, the Italian word for “sun”. The word for “stars” is “stelle”….maybe that’s around the back.

  • Edie Rose

‘Bruised boobs’ is never a good look.

  • Jessica Freeman

I’m just so thrilled I’m not seeing sheer bits or the shortest hem line known to man. She looks gorgeous more glam, less ‘try hard’.

    • Anna

Vanity Fair posted a picture of her said, “At least she’s not naked!”

    • susan6

She’s definitely trying something different….props to her for that, even though I’m not sure it’s working (I’m liking the face and hair, but the low top and high waist of the bodice makes her look short). Maybe she decided to be a bit more modest considering she’s being sued by some Moroccan government agency for “tarnishing the dignity and honor of women” by wearing her standard stagewear during a televised concert. Hey, Morocco…it’s JLo. She’s not going on stage wearing hijab.

  • Scarlett

    At least it’s not sheer…

  • SewingSiren

I love this dress.. It is the best she has ever looked in my opinion. Now if she could just get rid of the annoyed cat expression, it would be perfect.

  • molly Flores

Beautiful dress… And its actually in a color and no illusion netting, so progress for her.

    • ccinnc

Eh, you can be sure it won’t happen again for a while.

  • Nazzzy

The dress doesn’t flatter her figure at all still I cannot recall her looking as beautiful as she does here.

  • Sekhmet6

Love the dress but it’s not doing much for her. The fit in the torso isn’t quite right, making her look a bit thick and hippy. I think the lip is wrong.

  • anneshirley

This is a really pretty dress, and event-appropriate, but I just don’t think it suits her. The high waist looks a little girlish with the structured bodice, and her boobs look tortured. To me, it’s a GTNYD. She looks ok, but someone else would really have looked outstanding in it.

  • Judy_S

    I’m thinking it’s for a role.
She plays an actress at an awards ceremony….

  • suzinrva

Sallow only due to the odd hair hue. If she had her hair closer to her natural brunette and perhaps lightened the lip a bit, then it would be darn near perfect, I think.

  • gitchygitchymama

    Screaming for a magic wand.

    • shirab

And wings! Like the ones Jan and Marcia made for Cindy’s fairy printheth cothtume.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Jan, you’re wings look like they were made for a 10 foot fairy.”

  • mmebam

  • Jmw

    bibbity bobboty boo

    • ccinnc

      … boob.

  • B_C_J

I think she looks really good. The dress is romantic & feminine. The hair is sophisticated – a reflection of the venue & the overall effect is that she looks beautiful.

  • colleenjanel

There’s no way she’s able to breathe. The dress looks 3 sizes too small … and apparently her torso is being squished out top and bottom of the bodice.

  • ccinnc

The proportions are off, not sure why. Maybe because of the boobitude? Unnecessary.

  • Joan Kunze

    Outlander at the Tonys…

    • Zirza

Say what you will, Claire would ROCK that gown.

Now I can’t get Jennifer Lopez on Outlander out of my head. HOLA SASSENACH.

  • Sanglots longs

Even on the model the bodice is patently too low. It needs at LEAST another inch at the top to stop looking like a big mishaps in the offing.

  • Karen B

Out side of the baby heads, I thought she was in Carey Mulligan drag

  • Your Coccyx

I almost didn’t recognize her until she started with the trademark JLo squinting and mouthbreathing she’s so fond of doing in pictures.

    • random_poster

Even the bucket-of-boobs-bodice didn’t give her identity away.

  • lizajane1776

Hate this. She looks so generic.
eta: Hate this on her. Dress is pretty. But it is so *normal* for her.

  • Nika E

I love this dress, and her makeup is pretty. I’m just happy I’m not seeing her ass or stomach or crotch.

  • happygolucky7

It may not be her dress, but damn, this dress is beautiful. Like, if I ever were invited to an awards show, this is what I’d want to wear. So, huh, JLo, pack it up and send it to me?

  • Wink

May not be the best color for her, but it’s a definite improvement over the nude/beigey/taupey/tan/sheer stuff that she LOVES so much.

  • Anna

I haven’t had enough coffee yet. I’m still trying to process that this is Jennifer Lopez.

    • StellaZafella

      Jennifer Lopez as January Jones.

    • decormaven

I’m on my second cup and I still can’t process it.

      • Anna

There’s no plunging neckline AND giant slit, no fried hair extensions, SHE’S WEARING A LIP COLOUR…does.not.compute.

  • Samantha Klein

I would like that dress, please.

  • Vanessa Reyes-Weber

Loved the dress when I first saw it on the runway. It’s beautiful and fun but I’m not sure if she is the person for it..Too serious and too much make-up perhaps?? She still looks good though and I kinda like the hair.

    • Lori

I agree that it’s not her dress. I

  • jonnyf8

Did anyone else on first glance think this this was Alyssa Milano?

    • boweryboy

I thought it was Lizzy Caplan.

  • marlie

I have minor concerns about the fit in the bodice, but I think JLo look pretty great here. The dress is beautiful, and totally event appropriate. That makeup, though…

  • Buellie413

The dress is SO gorgeous. I’m thrilled it’s not sheer.

  • Sometimes it takes me a good 5 minutes to stop laughing at your opening lines.

  • Jaeda Laurez

And this is why “To Thine Own Self Be True” is so very necessary. I prefer J-Lo when she’s J-Lo. This was okay, and certainly for the Tonys it was fine/appropriate, but she’s J-Lo and this is not her look.

  • She could serve drinks off that tit shelf.

    • Pennymac

      They’d spill. Its a little titscrepency-ish, no?

      • Hard to say with the hippy posing.

        • sagecreek

Yeah, the pose is weird, she actually looks like she’s slumping a la Dunham in that first shot.

      • BLauDGaspode

I keep wondering if it’s just her posing or if it’s the fit. Kind of hard to tell.

  • numenah

She always overdoes the contouring, and the makeup and that shade of blue are turning her sallow, but I’m loving the hairstyle. Yes, Attalady, for all of TLo’s reasons.

  • yethica

She can just go ahead and hand that dress over to me. Kthanksbye.

  • Belle239

I want to like this, but it’s just not doing it for me. She doesn’t look like J Lo, and I think it’s just mostly the hairstyle. I wore that style in h.s., back in the late 1960s and I’d bet she wouldn’t like me saying that. At any rate, she looks like she is a bit sad.

  • decormaven

Such a floaty dress, weighed down with 10 lbs of makeup and too much boobitude.

  • Pennymac

I find her attempt at normalcy disturbing.

  • YoungSally

I didn’t even recognize her last night. I only figured out it was JLo when the other two people (A Jonas and A someone else who I think may have been related to the terrible Finding Neverland song) were clearly NOT JLo

    • GillianHolroyd

I didn’t recognize her at all. When people said JLo was there, I thought maybe I’d been in the kitchen and missed it.

  • delw

This Lopez girl is really going places. First she snagged a seat next to Meryl at Oscars, and now she is showing the theater folks how it is done. I bet she is already in negotiations to take Dame Helen’s The Audience on the road.

  • renad

Not her dress, not her look. And the boobs are rebelling at the weirdness of it all.

  • Lily

Gurl, that’s not your awards show.

  • boweryboy

This is the best she’s looked in a very, very long time but the titscrepancy bugs. Or maybe it’s because she has her hand on her hip?

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Yep. As soon as I saw the slightly open mouth, I thought….Of Course.

But otherwise, she looks pretty and I like the dress.

  • ktr33

    Thumbnail = Alyssa Milano

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

From the thumbnail I honestly thought this was Bianca del Rio.

    Love it.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the Nancy Drew hair, but I’m not sure this dark lip works. Bless her for trying though.

  • Mrs. Julien

Note to self: Lips together, teeth apart.

  • ashtangajunkie

I love this gown, it’s gorgeous. So weird that it’s on JLo – I would have thought she would use the Tony Awards as a marketing opportunity for “Glitter in Beige: The Jennifer Lopez Story,” which is what I assume the musical about her life will be called.

  • Janet B

    Nice try.

  • &theJets

Too twee, too princess-y, and then she’s got all that make-up and her heavy breathing/glaring facial expression. This all just doesn’t go together.

  • tryinnottobetoojudgy

The bodice of that dress is just awkward, but I do applaud her having the sense to try to tone it down. And I’m just happy to see her wearing hair that appears to actually grow out of her scalp. If she had just worn normal eye make-up, this could have been some kind of personal best in an alternate JLo universe. It’s sort of a relief actually.

  • luludexter

I love this look and when I saw it I thought – when you can look like this, why would you look any other way? This is such an improvement over how she has been styling herself lately.

  • Future ex-Mrs. Malcom

That dress is literally something I’ve dreamed of owning since I bought Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness when I was ten years old.

  • GregoireNYC

Thought process — “The Tonys are CLASSY so don’t wear a garment where your ass hangs out.”

  • steph

Kinda love the dress, just not on her.

  • How uncharacteristically close to tasteful!

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I have to remember that line.

  • MartyBellerMask

I love that dress, but not on her. Like seriously, she’d ruining it. Don’t even get me started on her presenting “skills”.

  • Judy_J

I looked at this and my first thought was, “Who IS that?”

  • JeanneGreenEyes

I think this is a FABULOUS tribute to Leslie Ann Warren!

    • Shawn EH

Apparently the way to be chic at the Tonys is to channel OLD Hollywood glamour, what with a demure J-Lo who could have accepted an award with Marilyn Monroe in 1956, and Chenoweth channeling her best Carol Lombarde in 20th C. I’m all for it!

  • It looks like there’s three quarters of an actual bodice there, both on JLo and the model. Give me another quarter of bodice and I’d love it. But what is going on with the writing on the bottom? What does it say and why?

  • Shannyn Marie

She really channeled Sarah Jessica Parker’s style aesthetic didn’t she?

  • prettybigkitty

She needs to work on her fierce face. Most of the time she just looks like a congested mouth breather.

    • latina fey

i was just coming here to comment on that face she always makes. j’deteste.

  • Little_Olive

Well in true JLo fashion, she is always on costume rather than dressed. She plays a part in every event -perhaps she needs to rethink what part she plays and so tone it down sometimes-. In that light, I appreciate this: she would do nothing less than go the whole 9 yards. And she looks better than usual, IMO.

  • BaddestMotherEver

I think the writing around her hemline says “JUST KIDDING! I’M J-LO, BITCHES!”

  • FibonacciSequins

I barely recognized her. She looks great.

    GORGEOUS dress.

  • holla

check 3 off the list, boobs, sparkly, and sheer. next!

  • Kyle

  • Sherrie

Are we positive this is JLo? Cause this looks way too classy to be her. Short hair, dress covering sternum, and legs- if so, I like the direction, even if the makeup is a little heavy handed.

  • I really love this. It’s very elegant (for her). My only quibble is the way the bust makes her look wider in some shots.

  • rocketinu

Kim and Kanye could’t attend so she was filling in. I do like the dress.

  • DyanSwan

The new hair do makes me think that it’s a bait and switch for some subtle cosmetic procedure as her face looks a bit different (ex the make-up, if you can look past the trowel work).

  • Ruby_Red

One of my basic rules – you have large round breasts – no straight line décolleté without support. You look like an accident waiting to happen.

I love the dress, just don’t love it on her.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      NEVER squish the baby heads.

  • Freynika

Does being an audience member at the Tonys really require one to wear actual stage makeup? I also find the stars on the dress to be too on-point.

  • Shyla

Those boobs are very strangely squished. Some strange twisting or something.

  • GillianHolroyd

Well I didn’t recognize her last night. I thought I’d missed her presentation somehow. I love her hair and makeup, esp the dark lip as she so often resorts to nude. Also love the color of the gown and think it suits her fine except for the fit. Not so keen about the gold stars, those are a bit jejeune.

  • PLH

I love the dress. Her boobs look tortured.

  • Glancing at the last picture, I thought this was Kate Winslet for a second. And now I want to see Kate Winslet rock this look.

  • LJCdoc

I love that dress, but I agree that color isn’t working for her. It would look great on me though – hand it over, JLo.

  • LibKat

Not loving this look almost as much as I don’t love the fact that she was even at the Tonys, much less a presenter. The excessive glitz on the dress makes it look a costume for a high school production of The Wizard of Oz, with gratuitous boob torture. I like the new hairstyle, but the color is too close to her skin tone. I think that’s responsible for her sallowness. And her lipstick was applied with a trowel.

  • Pollynation

Such a sweet dress, if a tad over embellished. For once, she’s not a hootchie mama and I applaud her good sense for realizing her usual schtick wouldn’t be welcome here, as TLO pointed out.

  • Greenlee Rose

That’s why we need more women of color on the runway.

  • MarinaCat

She even got rid of the talons. Is she wearing body makeup? Her skin below the neck looks flawless.

  • FlipFlop

    Pageant dress.

  • Donna Deal

For her, this is dull. It is a gorge gown, but not for her.. the color is all wrong… is she depressed or something?

  • ThaliaMenninger

Not buying it. And not having her at the Tonys, either. She did not belong.

  • kim bunchalastnames

i hope she stops doing the open-mouthed hooded-eye sex-you thing before her children have to tell her to.

  • Tea

I’ve been growing my hair out to do that, though. I definitely like the hairstyle.

  • fromanotherplanet

The opening paragraph had me on the floor LOL

  • It’s official: there *are* clothes in the world that make JLo look rotund……strangely depressing, actually, as she’s usually so with it and rarely makes a fashion faux pas

  • GorgeousThings

Pity she couldn’t read the teleprompters worth shit. Those Hollywood types can’t read cues to save their lives.

  • HeyGirlHey683

GIRL, THAT IS NOT [HER] DRESS!! She doesn’t have nearly enough presence (or maybe height?) to show off all the fabulous beading on that skirt. I absolutely loved, LOVED, that Spring Valentino collection and this was my favorite part and she is NOT doing it justice IMO. :’(

  • JJA

Sallow, indeed. Though, she’s bringing a tetch of Salma-Hayek-Realness in the titoon dept.
