Cannes 2015: Julianne Moore in Armani Privé

Posted on May 14, 2015

We should warn you that there are a high number of black and gray dresses in the lineup for today. We figure we’ll hit the wall and start yelling about it some time around 4 pm, eastern. Set your watches now.

In the meantime, here’s Julianne, with the latest entry:

Ain’t no funeral dress, that’s for sure. If you’re going to hit the red carpet in something as colorless as this, it should at least be a little fun, right? We love it. It hits that sweet spot smack in between chic and whimsical. Granted, many will see this and think “hairy back,” but we prefer to think “drag goth fairy princess” instead. Also: those earrings are TO DIE.

  • Daisy Walker

She looks fantastic. Goth fairy is a perfect description.

  • chelseaad

pubes. all i see is pubes.

    • Abbey Rogue

It looks like the floor of a vajazzling salon.

    • Kent Roby

If those are pubes, then they are definitely circa 1978.

      • teensmom99

Haven’t you heard? Au natural is back.

        • Kent Roby

Thank goodness; I’m so tired of shaving “Go For It!” in mine.

  • Tiff79

Bravo! For once she found something tricky that works for her. I’m coveting those earrings but I suspect I would hate the shoes.

    • gabbi

Was this a Chopard-sponsored party? She and Bingbing are both wearing earrings from the same collection. Not that I’m complaining — they’re stunning!

      • Tiff79

Chopard is one of the Cannes partners this year. Lucky ladies!

      • Sennalina

I believe Chopard are one of the official partners of the Festival de Cannes

      • scimomma

at first I wasn’t sure about the earrings, but it looks like there are green baubles in the sequins so they are actually picking up some color in the dress.

      • Kim Elmore

        HAND OVER THE EMERALDS!!! 🙁

    • kimmeister

I’m thinking the shoes are her favorite ankle-strap platforms. Good thing they’re covered up.

      • Tiff79

Yes! I don’t know why she insists on wearing them with everything. They’re hellaciously unflattering.

      • EarlyXer

It makes me love this look more imagining those shoes under the skirt.

    • LJCdoc

I was gonna say; I think the shoes might be a little … orthopedic?

  • Karen B

    I can’t decide between a Fuzzy-Wuzzy or Chewbacca joke.

    • barbarienne

Go with Chewbacca. He doesn’t age either.

    • Oh now, a little marabou never hurt anyone.

      • Sartorial_She

If only I had an event at which to wear marabou!!

        • SunDevilWitch

Chez SDW, I call it “Cocktail Hour”.

  • B_C_J

She looks stunning. She should have worn this to the Oscars.

    • scimomma

Right? This is still in her tricky-weird wheelhouse but it’s actually fun and flattering

  • homofascist

Is the top part a wrap over the gown or is it actually part of the gown?

  • NMMagpie

    Szuzh dress.

  • Kelly

I get a “Fabulous Cruella de Vil” vibe from this, she is amazing.

  • Maurice Depestre

i love the fact that she kept the grey in her hair. She deserves to be commended on that alone.

    • bananafish

If that’s true, Brava, but I don’t see it!

      • Maurice Depestre

i may be wrong but i thought I could see some grey, on the 6th photo from the top, just above her right ear…

        • Jackie4g

Yes. That’s one of the first places those little greys appear. I like the smooth, neat head in contrast to the movement of the jacket, or bodice, whatever that is.

    • barbarienne

She’s 54 years old. I know I said she doesn’t seem to age, but the distinct lack of gray/silver on her head is defying all actuarial tables. Someone is doing a really good touch-up on her roots.

  • Janet B

    So glamorous.
    So unexpected.

  • Frank_821

I get a fun wicked drag queen vibe as well

imagine if Regine from Once Upon a Time had gotten to wear this?

  • MissMariRose

Is she wearing those same old black platform open toed shoes again? She’s like Queen Elizabeth. She only needs one pair of shoes (or 12 pairs of the same shoe).

    • I think so! I see her toes peeking out…

  • prisma

I wish we had a better look at her shoes to see if it’s her go-to pair.

    • sagecreek

LOL. I’m always grateful when we cannot see her shoes.

  • tryinnottobetoojudgy

Although I can get behind the somewhat controlled wackadoodleness of this look for Julianne – lord knows, the girl loves a tricky dress! – it seems to me that it’s too large for her. Could just be an illusion, given the hairy halo and wide plunging neckline, but it seems she’s being swallowed by the dress.

Her hair and makeup are dramatic and working for her; though I prefer the softer, more natural Julianne, she definitely looks gorgeous here!

  • barbarienne

It’s a great dress–I particularly like the base gray fabric.

Still, I’m glad that Fan Bing Bing and Lupita know it’s May. Sheesh, it’s been a long winter. I would think more ladies want to get their Spring on.

  • reebeemoon

She looks gorgeous. Julianne and Fan, please return those earrings to me when you’re finished with them. Because I’m the . . . ah . . . Chopard jewelry representative, yes.

    • 3boysful

Of course. We job share. (But wouldn’t you love to be IRL?)

  • Sekhmet6

I like this. Her last few forays on the RC were not as successful. The simple bun works and I think her face looks more relaxed than I’ve see in a while. It reminds me of a Laura Bennet PR gown.

    • StellaZafella

I always love her showing her freckles.
PS: She almost looks like Laura B here.

  • TLJezebel

Is she wearing those same God-awful shoes she always wears?

  • schadenfreudelicious

That is the second pair of emerald earrings at Cannes I would cut a bitch for….

    • bowlwoman

Yeah, I’m guessing emeralds are the pierre précieuse du jour.

  • MilaXX

Pretty with just enough fussiness for her wacky side. For some reason I can’t help wishing those earrings were red or purple.

    • barbarienne

Thank you! Everyone’s swooning over the earrings. I think they’re awesome earrings, but I don’t see any connection between them and this dress. I think purple would make more sense.

    • kimmeister

The earrings are amazing, but they don’t particularly go with that dress.

  • Shannyn Marie

You can tell she feels pretty

  • Nathan

The top is a bit too much for me, but she still looks fabulous. This is the way to wear black.

  • Ella Mack

    It’s not…boring?

  • Abbey Rogue

I don’t understand the appeal of muppety clothing.

  • Chuck Barthelme

For someone who can tend toward blah, I think this is an awesome look. And I love her hair.

  • appliquer

A bit darker on the lip and it would be perfect for me!

  • Anna

Well, if you’re going to wear a dress with Fraggle sleeves and bodice, it may as well be on the Croisette.

  • Fantastic (added bonus: she’s probably wearing those awful shoes she always chooses but it’s not possible to see them in this dress!)…..love the earrings, they make her eyes zing! In love with this dress!

  • bessann28

I don’t hate it as much as I would have thought if I saw it on a rack. So when are sternums going to go out of style? Soon, I hope.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She’s pulling it off. That’s what counts.

  • Kayceed

I like it – the plunging neckline actually looks chic here.

  • lamamu

I unabashedly love this. Perfect dress for her.

  • TerryMH

    Sternum is the new black.

  • Judih1

a personal best, even with the hairy back

  • Kyle

I love this! I would’ve preferred a different make up, though.

  • mar

I kinda love this dress. I kept looking for something for my eye to snag on and complain about but she looks really good. It helps that you can’t see her shoes.

  • Love it!!

  • Hugo’s Boss

Notwithstanding that the bodice looks like it’s covered with black Easter basket grass, I love the whole look (except, probably, for the shoes). It’s the best Miss Julianne has looked in AGES.

  • salcar

I’m not loving this. It kind of says “craft project” to me with black Easter grass (is that a thing?). The shape is nice, though.

    • Hugo’s Boss

      JINX!

      • salcar

Haha! I didn’t see yours first. Great minds think alike!

  • bananafish

I disagree, I like the idea of something whimsical like this and it’s obviously well-made with a lot of beautiful elements, but that doesn’t change the fact that it just looks bad- to me it’s a fairly standard beaded gown with an ugly, hairy jacket over it and boring hair.

  • VCR1

I like this too. I think it’s beautiful and she looks good in it. Just curious, is the feathery top actually a little jacket?
After seeing Julianne Moore and Fan Bingbing, I am coveting emerald earrings. Time to buy some fakes!

  • lalalala

    queen

  • Gorgeous. More old world Hollywood sensibility.

  • boweryboy

I like the bottom half of the dress and the earrings.

  • Carleenml

gasp. love. I NEVER love what she wears. This is fantastic.

  • tallgirl1204

Re: the earrings. I’m seeing a lot of green– whether all-out like Lupita, or splashes.

  • mandocalrissian

Love the earrings! The hair looked like a struggle bun from the side, but it looks fine from the back. I actually like the dress better from the back. The shoulder volume + sternum show in the front is just a bit much for my taste.

  • GemFemme

She should have worn this to the Oscars.

  • Lilithcat

The earrings don’t work for me with that dress. And the dress would be scads better without the bodice fungus.

  • teensmom99

This should not be photographed only from the waist up. It’s like the opposite of a scroll down a fug. It needs to be seen as the whole and not the parts.

    • Little_Olive

Same reaction here. Just because it’s a good look, doesn’t mean I’m not frowning at the excess sternum there.

  • Linda LaPaz

All this Chopard bling on the red carpet is to die for!

  • Jackie4g

I like the dress and her hair is perfectly smooth to make a nice balance. Those earrings are TDF, but I bet they’re heavy to wear.

  • Sophie

I wish she had worn her hair in a french twist instead, but the rest looks good.

  • Gatita

    Love it. Cannes perfect.

  • Belle239

Looks like this would be a fun dress to wear. I like it and it appears she does, too!

  • sarcasmfont

maybe this should have been a sleeveless gown…she looks like she has ape arms, and we all know she doesn’t really!

  • mjude

LOVE HER & love the look

  • WoodnSalt

Is Laura Bennett designing for Armani Prive now?

  • GeoDiva

I feel sorry for the poor emu.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love it. She went for something tricky, but not so tricky it looks like it’s wearing her, unlike some of her other choices. And the hair and earrings are perfect.

  • KendraMR

    Personal best. I love it.

  • Lindsay Donohue

IF women were permitted to be on the Night’s Watch on GOT, I would imagine that this is what it would look like. Julianne is totally a Lady Crow right now.

  • AC Simons

This is a great look on her. Very dramatic and perfectly tailored. The hair really showcases those amazing earrings. Could have used a stronger lip color, but oh well, you can’t have everything.

  • steph

Best we’ve seen her in a while.

  • ChelseaNH

Definitely works better in the full-length shots than the close-ups, but I like it a lot.

  • SLMW

Love the dress, love the earrings.

  • Yoshio

The earrings are spectacular. I do think the dress doesn’t complement them properly what with all the strands of that distracting material waving about.

  • formerlyAnon

LOVE it. As stated, it’s fun. And say what you will about the color, I think a lot of what she wears makes her look washed out, or as if her foundation color is just a tad . . . off (usually too yellow) and this does not do those things. She looks GOOD in this, and glamorous, not try-hard or off-the-rack.

  • EEKstl

    LOVE LOVE LOVE. Full stop.

  • Gorengirl

I think this is a Personal Best for her. Gorgeous.

  • Shawn EH

Werq! She looks chic and powerful!

  • Diane Bellora

Sorry, but, to me, it looks like a swarm of flies are flocking the top of the dress. I do, however, love her hair in the chignon.

  • htdp1

She looks fantastic…not crazy about those earrings with that dress/fuzzy top though. And, I’m pretty sure I dislike her shoes. Something metallic or jeweled would’ve been better, perhaps.

  • heartbot

    It’s a glamorous evil sorceress/queen dress. I love it.

  • marlie

I think she looks gorgeous. I love the earrings – but not with this – but that’s a minor quibble. Overall, Julianne looks FAB, and perfect for Cannes.

  • She looks great, and the earrings are killer.

  • TRSTL

    Gorgeous! LOVE that dress…….

  • random_poster

It’s perfect for her. I really like Julianne, so I’m always thrilled when she picks something that suits her.

  • SuzyQuzey

SO much better than what she usually wears. She needs different lipstick, though.

  • bitts

Too bad she wasn’t wearing any lipstick. That would have really completed things. A good, saturated merlot color would have been perfect.

  • uprightcitizen

She looks awesome. Just the shades of gray that look great on a redhead, and it flatters the hell out of her figure, and she knows it.

  • deb

I’m trying to imagine what it’s like to sit down in that dress….

  • 60Gal

My birthday is Sunday and emerald is my birthstone. So, I think that by rights those earrings must be mine. Feel free to send them anytime, Julianne.

  • Truthiness2U

I don’t even mind the Fraggle Rock top, because this is fitted well on her, flattering, and chic. Which is certainly helped by that lovely hair, great make-up. And those earrings? WANT. So beautiful great pop of colour this outfit needed, and of course, red-heads look great with green, so there’s that whole thing going on.

Not just grading on a curve, Julianne looks nice her. For Julienne, it’s REALLY good.

    • Candigirl1968

Yup. Would have loved something jeweled in the hair to really make it fabulous.

  • Nika E

You sold me with the drag goth fairy princess cause before that I wasn’t feeling it. I do love the earrings though.

  • LeelaST

Love this. My new inspiration “goth fairy.”

  • Gatto Nero

It’s a bit crazy, which is to say right in her wheelhouse. I love it on her. And it’s styled flawlessly.

  • delw

She should have worn this to the Oscars.

  • Ariana Marquis

I was about to say “At least you can’t see her damn toes” when BAM! There they were!
I like this a lot though, overall.

  • PLH

LOVE this! And I’d cut TWO bitches for those earrings.

  • aria02

Very glam – elegant . She reminds me so much of that New York lady on project runway who loved designing over embellished dresses with deep v necks Laura something I believe – she shd design for JM

  • alyce1213

This is pretty much better than anything she’s ever worn, so YAY! Very stunning and no Frankenbusiness. I love her hair this way for the look.

  • The Chopard jewellery at Cannes is always such a pleasure.

  • Martha Anderson

only thing hitting me wrong is the belt tie

  • Trixie A. Cooper

I’m digging everything about this. Hair, makeup on point, and someone distract her while I snatch those earrings.

  • quiltrx

I rather love this. And I love her. Well done, dear.

  • smayper

It’s a gorgeous green earring battle — Julianne vs. Fan.

  • She looks like a star; this is pretty damn great.

  • CT14

    A muppet died.

  • terry_mckay_myoldfriend

Aw, she looks so beautiful and chic- and all this without sacrificing her trademark sweetness and sense of fun. To me, this is the best she’s looked on the RC in a long time.

  • SunDevilWitch

When you’re the reigning Oscar champ at Cannes, you can pull this off. Brava Madame.

  • kittyvscupcake

Too much. I think the 2 textures should be switched-feather column skirt and sleek bejeweled top. That would be a better balance. Her smile is glorious though!

  • Diane

    I love it.
