Cannes 2015: Diane Kruger in Dolce&Gabbana and Prada

Posted on May 19, 2015

The first dress looks a little like a tacky Mother’s Day Card, but that doesn’t bother us enough that we don’t like it. In fact, we kind of love it.

It’s like the perfect daytime Cannes dress. It’s got that simple, breezy style but it’s also got a giant glittery flower commanding all your attention. We suspect we wouldn’t like this dress much in person, but it looks great in pictures. Especially in daylight.

Miss Lady’s clearly in a blue kind of mood:

That’s a stunner. Absolutely gorgeous. Could’ve done without the sheer hip panel, but the rest of the dress more than makes up for it. You can tell she loves it.

  • NMMagpie

She can bring the drama when she wants to. And dang, if she cannot wear the crap out of a gaudy dress that you could easily find on the rack at Goodwill.

  • ctopine

The fit on that first dress is no good. It’s bunchy. Second dress is beautiful.
But, not to be annoying, the dart on the top of the first dress doesn’t line up with one of the darts on the bottom and it’s bugging me.

    • Sennalina

I noticed that as well *eye twitch*

    • ballerinawithagun

You are correct, but then amazingly the hem on Diane’s dress is better than the runway version. Weird!

      • NJCathi

Seriously. You would think the seamstresses could do a better job in couture. That hem is awful on the runway and only slightly better here.

    • livesarah

It’s dreadful work. I feel like it needs to go up a size. But how can someone so incredibly slender need to go up a size? That’s some pretty poor manufacturing.

      • Amanda Welliver

If it was created based upon the model, it’ll be too small for anybody else. It looks like they had to stuff the top for her.

  • 3boysful

I love the color and the buttons on the first dress. W/o said hip panel, the gown would be a knockout.

    • smh4748

I’m with you on the first dress! It feels very 50s inspired–the color, the graphic, and the buttons–but without being at all literal about it. It’s very fun! (And I’m totally with you on the second dress too, for that matter!)

  • stellavision

Drama drama DRAMA. Love them both.

  • Aliu

Don’t particularly care for the flesh-colored satin sandals with the first dress… But she is channeling her Helen of Troy character in that second gown and I’m here for that.

  • Scimommy

A little surprised that the second dress is Prada because it’s not ugly. In fact, it’s very beautiful.

  • Anna

Hate the shoes with both looks (DON’T THINK I CAN’T SEE YOU PEEKING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH THE GOWN, SATIN BRIDESMAID PLATFORM PUMP!!!). She looks lovely and very ethereal in the second look.

    And HEL-LO, co-stars.

    • CPK1

Awful shoes on both counts. I’m not sure how I missed the GIANT satin clodhopper poking out of her gown until I read your post

      • Anna

I didn’t notice it at first, either. It’s a sneaky, tricksy satin clodhopper that sort of blends in with the hem of her gown. But once you notice it, you can’t un-see.

    • Leah Elzinga

what even IS that?! I love heels, I do, but it makes no sense to me to put yourself into a pair like those that will barely be seen. Is the extra six inches really THAT important? Wouldn’t a lower pair with beautiful toes have been more appropriate?

      • Anna

I’m guessing the added height is so that she doesn’t step on the hem and ruin the gown/fall on her face? I don’t know why they couldn’t have just hemmed it, but maybe it wasn’t possible?

    • Little_Olive

I am SO SURE that those “naked” sandals can be ordered in Pantone code.
Lazy stylists. That is not a shoe option, that is dodging the shoe choice.

    • marlie

The naked sandals don’t bother me, and I’m choosing to ignore the satin platform pumps.

    • Lucía Gavello

I googled, hi Matthias Schoenaerts, nice to meet you <3

    • Tee

      You mean pimp platform . . .

  • Glam Dixie

I really don’t like the fit on the blue dress. I’m pretty sure she isn’t really that lumpy. The second dress is gorgeous.

    • MilaXX

The bodice looks a teeny bit too tight.

    • Ediths_Head

Love the dress, but it’s too tight. Seems impossible to even make a dress that could be too tight for her, but there you have it.

    • Gatita

Fit on the model is how it’s supposed to look. Too bad because I really do like it.

  • Kent Roby

She looks amazing, and you can tell that she is feeling it!

  • luludexter

I love that first dress so much and the color is really beautiful on her. The second dress is pretty glamorous for Prada – I like it too except for the aforementioned sheer panel. The back is super sexy on her.

    • TinyDynamo

My thoughts exactly! I squealed with glee at that first dress. LOVE!

  • MilaXX

Love the first dress, but hate the buttons down the back. Second dress is spot on perfect. Agree about the gratuitous sheer panel, but that’s a not a deal breaker.

    • kimmeister

The buttons on the back are so logistically challenging for sitting, it ticks me off.

  • imspinningaround

Super sexy open back on the Prada gown. Love the icy color and how she styled her hair to work with the beachy humidity, not against it.

Hey sad guy with the neckerchief…[makes “call me” gesture].

    • Kayceed

I noticed Sad Guy immediately. Jaunty neckerchief looks like wan attempt to distract from the up-all-night, no-afternoon-nap thing going on there. Miss Kruger could use a bit of color on her lip.

  • BlairBear

I just wish the top had a touch more coverage but the rest of beautiful.

  • EarlyXer

Wait! Harry Winston jewelery? I thought they all had to wear Chopard?

  • Alexa42

I was hoping everyone was boycotting Dolce and Gabbana, like, forever… #teamElton

  • LibKat

The material and the sleeves on the first dress strike me as too heavy, especially for Cannes in the late spring. And I hate the buttons with a fiery passion.

I agree that with the exception of the unnecessary sheer side panels the gown looks great on her. But she seems to be missing something. What could it be? Oh right, Joshua Jackson as her arm candy.

  • Sarah

That gown is made up off all kinds of things I hate – sideboob, halter mock-neck, sheer panels, large clumps of sequin applique – but the sum of its parts is lovely. And I love her hair with it.

  • Imasewsure

I think she needs to size up on the first dress but it’s surprisingly cute (and I haven’t liked anything she has worn in a long time). The second look is stunning (ignoring the panels of course). Two for two!!

  • Sekhmet6

I have to ask this…What does one wear panty-wise under that gown? Is it like Scotsmen and kilts?

    • Introspective

nada. commando. (as in, hoping to god that cleaning budget is top notch post-poledance when the gown is returned to the showroom…)

      • Gatita

I just googled and there is such a thing as glue on panties. So there you go.

      • Sekhmet6

I thought so, but the idea of commando with that kind of dress and so many people around was somewhat unsettling.

    • Little_Olive

There are flesh-colored thongs that have the thinnest side straps. There is also a thing that is like a pantyliner that sort of sticks to you (I won’t say more because I dint want to know more), like a panty with no sides. And there is always commando.

  • mimi

WHO is that dark brooding gentleman on her arm? Wowza

    • Mathilde

The one with the scarf? I don’t know, but I want to find out, because he is GORGEOUS!

      • harthad

Yes, broody scarf man looks as though he needs me to cheer him up.

      • mimi

Yes maam. I want to cheer him up.

      • Kayceed

        The modern-day brooding Lord Byron.

      • Kayley McPhee

The one with the scarf is Mike Levy, known as Gesaffelstein to the electronic music world. He is French and Hot and on the Bromance record label who are ~all the rage~. He produced some stuff on Yeezus, and he apparently did the soundtrack for Maryland! Which is why he’s here, looking brooding and sexy.

        • harthad

Ah, thank you! Just Googling “Gesaffelstein” has brightened my day immeasurably. (French and Hot, always a classic combination.)

    • Beardslee

      Yes, he is delectable.

  • steph

Ditch the blue satin clutch evening bag, get rid of the side boob action, and then I could love it. I’m also over all this sheer obsession in dresses.

  • Liliter

She nailed both the photocall and premiere looks and she knows it too

  • Jenet27

She was sick and still looks beautiful.

  • latina fey

    “can you spell ‘gabbaaana?'”

  • Scarlett

In motion that Prada was just something else entirely. Stunning. When Miuccia get sit right she really nails it. I think if the hair had been up it would have over cooked it. One of the best looks over all so far.

  • VCR1

Love both dresses actually. However she could pick better shoes!
    I’m still mad at D&G though…

    • Amel

Yeah I was just thinking she could’ve done silver shoes with the daytime look, though maybe nude looks more “beachy”?

  • molly Flores

That second dress is gorgeous, but I still find myself yawning when I look at her.

  • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

Once again, I am waiting for too wide a step or too strong a breeze to expose her netherbits to the paparazzi. Stupid sheer paneling has got to go.

  • I need to start wearing my hair like that bottom look. Gorgeous, and hopefully easy(ish) to do!

  • MaggieMae

Beautiful! The tendency to look like a (high) fashion victim runs strong in this one. I’m glad she didn’t show up in something cray-cray. More of this please!

  • diced

Can someone explain the thinking behind the podium they stand in front of? How is half wall with a line of photogs behind you a good setup? Clearly, those guys are getting odd shots.

    • Anna

It’s like a reception desk with all the photographers hiding behind it.

  • Shawn EH

The first dress is kind of t-shirt as couture, which I don’t mind at all. A D&G sexy starlet look as opposed to some of their more matronly Elizabethan affairs.

  • Coleen

According to her Instagram, she was sick that day. I wish I looked half that good when I was sick!

  • That gown is both beautiful and sexy. Well done. I do wonder how she sits comfortably in the blue dress, because those are some big, honkin’ buttons.

  • kimmeister

    Yowzas, those are some legs!!!

  • Shelby

She is so gorgeous. I have tiny nit-picks with both, but the overall effect is stunning.

    • ballerinawithagun

I agree, gorgeous and those legs!!!!

  • Cathy S

The flower on the first dress looks like something out of a Terry Gilliam Monty Python cartoon. I guess that’s why I like it.

  • ballerinawithagun

Prada is fabulous! Are they going classy while Armani is attempting trendy? The back of the Prada really makes me fantasize about every thing that could have been done to improve the earlier Armani!

  • ballerinawithagun

Extra postage on that Mother’s Day card!

  • The Versatile Chef

Who’s the sleepy dude with the scarf?

    • Kayley McPhee

i answered this above hehe, finally my extensive knowledge of French electronic music comes in handy! his name is Mike Levy but he’s known as Gesaffelstein, and he is a MAJOR babe.

  • The first look is adorable, the second is very mermaid-ish. I’m not mad at it.

  • Tashina Savage

That first dress was clearly meant for me. Please pack it up and send it my way when you are done. Seriously though, I love it so much it breaks my heart that I will never get to wear it.

  • Diane Bellora

I like the Dolce & Gabbana (D&G) look. Diane Kruger has great legs and rocks a mini. However, I would like the D&G look it better if it fit better and there were different shoes. (I wonder how it would look with red shoes? Not sure as I’m having trouble visualizing it.)

As for the Prada look. Hate the sheer side panels and peaks of side boob, but it fits well and the color suits. The jury is out for me on the hair. With a dress that embellished, I like a simpler style, preferable a chignon or updo.

  • kalisa

Her hair sure did grow out fast between afternoon and evening.

  • Diane

That’s a beautiful gown … I wish the panels weren’t sheer as well. First dress is charming in a weird way.

  • Mothra

That first dress’ hem is weird, like it was chopped short and stitched by hand in Home Ec class.

  • marlie

The first dress is very cute, but the second is stunning. I’m not even mad at the sheer hip panel. That second dress might be one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen her in.

  • Scot Meacham Wood

I think my favourite thing about the amazing custom Prada gown – is the way, to me, that Diane clearly *feels* in it. There have been numerous looks over the last several years – with numerous quibbles and call-outs . . . but, I really love seeing someone who obviously knows that they looks amazing. Often that level of confidence can pull almost anything up to a WERQ from a gosh-doesn’t-she-look-fabulous.

  • Tee

I liked the D&G dress from the front. Then she turned around and PUH POW! Love the buttons and now I must have this dress!

  • lmg

Did her hair get significantly LONGER between those two dresses? I normally don’t notice things like that.

  • Lilithcat

What is it with all these dresses with no backs?

  • bayusc

First look – her pinky toe is hanging on for dear life!

  • imustacheyouaquestion

the second one reminds me of a mermaid, i love it!

  • Pennymac

I couldn’t decide on the first one, but the back of it really took it up a notch. The gown is stunning.

  • Greenlee Rose

    Gorgeous. Day and night.

  • GemFemme

Love the blue gown. It’s not a color you see a lot on the red carpet, which is a shame.

  • lilibetp

The fit is off on the first dress. Although VPL is maybe better than visibly not wearing any panties at all.

  • quiltrx

That first dress is a really bad fit/shape for her. I’m not crazy about the rose thing, but I am LIVING for those vintage-esque buttons!
And the second dress..well, pretty back, decent front, a shame about the sides.

  • Two such different hair lengths??!!

  • Judih1

Love the dress and purse on the second outfit, but wish she had done something different with her hair. It looks way to casual for such an elegant look

  • Badge354

I think she looks beautiful in both dresses but agree with your critique as well. I am curious about Cannes. Are those nice looking gentlemen employeees of the festival hired to escort stars on the red carpet or are they really good looking guards for her jewelry?

  • Bea

I have zero interest in her acting, but her fashion is almost always on-point, either aspirational or edgy. To quote Clueless: ‘…and the girl can dress’

  • POSTURE.

First dress belongs on Kieran Shipka.
Second dress works despite the sheer I think.

  • magnolias2015

both looks are pretty fabulous imho!

  • kim bunchalastnames

i think she looks great in both, full stop.
