Hair, dress and lips all competing reds. Like the dress silhouette, loathe the shoes.

    • ChiKat67

I was thinking the same thing . I’m ok with the hair and the dress, but not the hair, lips and dress.

    • evave2

I’m glad you’re on the top here because THAT was exactly what I was thinking. The shoes and purse are too matchy matchy to me. I don’t like the gold.

I REALLY like the fascinator on the runway model. (What makes a hat a fascinator rather than a hat? At this level of design is every head covering a fascinator? Anyway, the fascinator looks so cool.)

      • FridaStaire

I think it’s the total lack of utility that defines a fascinator. A hat actually does something to qualify it as clothing rather than mere decoration.

    • gabbilevy

      I’m starting to wonder if she’s color-blind.

    • macaroni

My first thought as well. Too much.

    • Agree on all counts. I wish the dress were navy blue, and the lips a pinky nude. The shoes are tacky Charlotte Russe castoffs, she needs sexy complicated Monolos or something for this.

      • EarlyXer

        Ooh! Much better already.

  • Kimberly Wilcox

I like the dress….I don’t think its her color, what with the red hair that doesn’t really go with this shade of red, and the lipstick. Shoes…look cheap.

  • Dino Bonačić

ADORE! She’s my spirit celebrity animal <3

Back from the Stepmother days until Today!

  • Dangerfield5

Ouch, that’s a lot of shades of red – hair, lipstick, dress. Too much. Dress is a beautiful shape but I wish it were a different colour.

  • geans

I’m a redhead who is pro-redheads wearing all the reds.
I’m 100% with this until the stripper shoes.

    • jspark

What about bottle redheads? Should they be allowed to wear red too, or should we require them to pick a bottle to match the dress?

      • geans

Fair question. Grey area. I’m inclined to go with the option that’s less stressful for the hair and say they can retain all the rights for the shade for the duration of the bottle.

        • jspark

LOL! The terms of service are void once you have to start thwacking the bottle upside down.

          • Joanna

as a lawyer, I love these comments, LOL!

    • smayper

ME too! I adore the redhead (natural or not) who goes right for the flame red. I love this dress and her hair and face.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Not wild about the shape of her hair but the color is lovely with her complexion.

  • Aggressive.

    • jspark

  • smh4748

You know, I don’t love her style most of the time, but I love that she is all about bright colors. In a sea of starlets wearing black, white, beige, and blush, I love that she’s always going for something bright and eye-catching. It doesn’t always work, but I appreciate her non-fear of color.

    • Nice of you note. I agree. Honestly, I can’t remember EVER liking anything she’s ever worn on the RC, but at least she is fearless.

    • random_poster

Yes! One thing I can say about Jenna is I don’t get tired of seeing posts about her. There is nothing tiresome or boring about her style.

  • SewingSiren

It would be ravishing without that big , stupid, and completely unnecessary slit. The right side profile is a WERK.

    • Kent Roby

I love the slit ONLY because the dress is high-necked and long-sleeved; Slits only bother me with lots of other skin showing (but viva la difference!)

    • CPK1

Hate the slit. Cheapens everything (along with shoes). I do not see why it has to be so high. Not a prudish thing more a personal aesthetic response!

  • Noah

I’m shocked, because opening a Jena Malone post is almost always full-on fug. But, this… actually kinda works!

Except for the Strippers Discount Warehouse shoes. Those need to go.

  • jilly_d

Love it. Coulda done without the platform- a gold sandal would have been more elegant, but the beautiful clutch makes up for it in my eyes. Personal best.

  • RussellH88

She’s really channeling Even Rachel Wood, isn’t she?

I’d love the dress if there weren’t so much red everywhere else.

  • jspark

Does anyone else just find her annoying? She obviously wants to be a movie STAHH but she comes across as charmless and fickle.

  • Sissy

I spy stripper heels! Otherwise, I love all the redzz

  • Anna

Considering what I’ve seen her in, I think this may be a personal best for her. Serving FACE in the profile shots.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Her profile is so intense and beautiful it makes me think she should be in dramatic – but not tricky – frocks.

      • Anna

I agree. I never really noticed how attractive she was until these profile shots. This is definitely the right idea for her, even if the details aren’t quite right.

    • Jessica Freeman

She’s got that face on of “yea, I am feeling DIVINE and I know you’e looking”. Love it.

  • Jennifer Bober

Someone should have told her to clean the lipstick off of her teeth! That’s an assistant that needs a clue.

I’m all for redheads in red, but I think this one was a bit too orange for her. She would have been better in a red with more blue overtones. The shoes are just tacky.

  • MilaXX

It’s an improvement. I like the hair. She appears to have taken the brow color down to a more flattering shade. I don’t mind the red lip, but she should be wearing a matte instead of a gloss. The gloss gives her that Joker look when smiling. I like the dress and bag, but I dislike the hockey puck platforms.

    • Wink

She’s learning… bit by bit. Lots of potential.

      • MilaXX

I agree, she likes to take risks. If she can lock down the details, she could be a real fashionsta.

  • WERQ! this is, to me, the best she’s ever looked. so classic it’s edgy again. LOVE

  • MoHub

More hedgeclipper hair, Joker lips, gorgeous dress with a too-high slit, and some of the most hideous shoes I’ve ever seen. She is not worthy.

    • Imasewsure

Yes I like that she tries but perhaps this is too much fashion for someone who isn’t quite as Diva-worthy as she thinks. Just seems forced and always a bit off

  • Janet B

On my monitor, the reds clash.

    • Sarah

On this planet, the reds clash.

  • GoAwayKardash

    Norma Desmond.

    • decormaven

If the hair was sleeker, and a more classic shoe chosen, that could be it. It’s definitely with an edge; she just needs to learn how to wield it a bit better.

      • GoAwayKardash

I didn’t mean it in a good way.

  • Love it from the neck down. I think, maybe, a more polished hair style was called for here. Also, girl, whoever is doing your lipstick is giving you Cesar Romero lips. Not a good look.

  • estella_nyc

Rewatched The Women (1939 version) this weekend, so maybe I am just in the mood for “jungle red” and some beautifully draped fabric, but I think this works for Jena. The only thing I didn’t like was the gray nails against the gold clutch.

    • Kent Roby

Did you see the Broadway production? It was fab: huge stellar cast, gorgeous clothes; was a limited engagement, just a month or two after 9/11.

    • kimmeister

The gray nails are odd in general with the whole outfit.

  • MW

Celebrating 50 years in showbusiness! In great shape!

  • Those profile shots are killer. I think if this was on any other woman we’d be harsher, but considering how she usually dresses this is stunning. Would have been perfect with different shoes. I adore that shade for her hair – hope she keeps it!

  • LibKat

    Too. Many. Reds.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Bad color with the hair. If I were her I’d go with the dress, and change the hair color. Also, just too much red in one look- lips, hair, dress…

  • Karen Belgrad

I get such an Evan Rachel Wood vibe.

  • Sarah

She looks great in the dress, but the clashing reds are bothersome, as is the grey manicure. I don’t mind that color, but it does not go here, especially not with those gold shoes (which are also questionable.)

    • Nancer

I like the fact that they are gold, but have quibbles with the hoof like platform. However, I can understand why she would want shoes that gave her some serious height with this dress, to extend the length of the leg and the drape of the skirt. So I gave her that one. :]

      • Kent Roby

She seriously looks like she is 7 feet tall here!

    • DuBey2

so glad I’m not the only one who hated the grey manicure in this situation. I have a question: who does she play in the new Mockingjay movie? (If I can even remember my characters… its been ages since I read the books)

      • Sarah

Johanna Mason. She’s a previous Games winner from District 7.

        • DuBey2

Thank you, Sarah. Are you going to see the movie friday night? (I’m hoping to do a midnight showing Thursday if my mister is off work on Friday)

          • Sarah

Nah. I go to the movies about once a year, and it has to be Tolkien or Rowling-created to get me there. I’ll be going to the Hobbit part 3 next month. As for Mockingjay, I’m not that excited about it – the book was not great, and the fact that they’re making it TWO movies is fairly off-putting for me.

  • Scarlett

The shoes make me sad because until the feet this was an A+. She’s really becoming a bit of a re carpet star. She reminds me of Evan Rachel Wood but with a more positive red carpet vibe about her.

  • NMMagpie

With all those reds, she looks like a comic book character.

  • Nancer

Love the dress on her. The lipstick is a bit too much, and I’m not sure that the dress works with that hair color. But her complexion is flawless and I love the accessories.

  • Kent Roby

I love the old Hollywood glamour of the dress. Change out the shoes and throw on a gold jeweled turban, and it would be completely perfect!

    • Anna

When in doubt, throw on a gold jeweled turban.

      • CakesOnAPlane

When will you be releasing the bumper sticker version of this??? I’d like to pre-order 5.

    • Imasewsure

And worn better by Dorothy Lamour

      • Kent Roby

Of course; you can’t spell “glamour” without “Lamour”!

  • JuliaInBlack

Love her hair color, but the lipstick just kills it for me. Reminds me of one of my mom’s old icky, sticky, 1970s Mary Kay shades that she never wore and never bothered to throw away.

  • John Vernon

Girl you missed your red shoes hahaha

  • Maria Mercedes Arevalo Espinoz

    Cheap shoes!

  • GeoDiva

Hate the stripper shoes, otherwise she looks great!

  • The best I’ve ever seen her look. That’s a near-Werq for her.

  • hughman

The slinky ingénue actress in a Thin Man movie.

    • DuBey2

  • ovarB

Love this look!! Love the sleekness and not a dress wrinkle to be found!!!

  • papillon

I love, love, LOVE this dress! It’s absolutely stunning. The red is so vibrant it practically glows. I really like all the reds (dress, hair, lipstick) but I’m not 100% sure the colour of the dress works for her skin tone. In the first few pictures, she looks a bit sallow. But in the close up ones, she looks pretty good so maybe that’s just lighting? But anyway, it’s almost a werq. This is how a movie star should look. Very glamorous, very old Hollywood. The shoes are bad though.

  • Imasewsure

I fear this one really doesn’t have a clue what she actually looks like…

  • Ashley

This is one of those looks that is very dramatic and eye-catching look at first blush but that is more problematic upon closer examination. She looks (surprisingly) really great in all of those reds, but they do compete with one another. The dress is gorgeous, but the slit is *way* too high such that it’s very distracting, and the waist doesn’t seem to be hitting in the right place. The shoes are really bad on their own (though I like really like the idea of gold), and they also make the dress too short. This all comes across as very critical–but she does look striking and confident on the the whole, and the look is one that catches attention, which was probably her aim at an event like this.

  • BrooklynBomber

Wow. A more grown up look than she usually sports. I like it. (Except the nail color – bleah.)

  • teensmom99

    Channeling Joan Crawford.

  • boweryboy

This is the one time I would be ok with fully replicating the runway look. If only she’d ditched the shoes and worn the hat …

  • schadenfreudelicious

I may be in the minority, but i do not like her hair, at all…

  • smayer

The off-center draping of the bodice bugs. The dress is fine other than that, but I don’t get her. She’s in Dunham territory without trying to troll.

  • Surprisingly an improvement for her. But she still can’t get the details right.

  • Joanna

I liked it more as I scrolled down. But I do not think that shade of lipstick is her friend, especially with her brows at their current color.

  • Vegas Girl

The gray nail polish with gold shoes/accessories is making my eyes twitch. I want to like her, but she always gives me a “trying too hard” vibe with her styling.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I get the sense that this girl is a real character but… why does her smile always freak me out? Is it the shade of lipstick or just the way her lips frame her teeth?

    • kimmeister

It’s the gums. Those of us with gummy smiles have to be careful of how we smile in photographs, because the result can be like the 2nd photo of her here, where her mouth is open, but you see zero teeth, just gums.

  • ashtangajunkie

WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS WRONG, JENA MALONE? You seem so awesome.

  • Kaytee

I like the silhouette but not the color or the shoes, a deeper less orange red perhaps?

  • Dress is matronly. Hair is terrifying.

  • She looks like liquid fire!

  • Beto

Somehow like the dress. But… somehow red is not her color. Also, please tell her that she needs to take a lesson –or two– on how to stand correctly for a line of paparazzi.

  • nopenopenopers

That lipstick is still not working for her. It weirdly matches her gums. GIRL DIFFERENT LIPSTICK.

  • JanW

I’m the minority but I don’t like the dress. Too shiny and matronly with the high neck and long sleeves. I may be prejudiced because I also don’t like this orangey shade of red.

  • Liz

Glad she toned down the eyebrows. Impressive redhead wearing red skill.

  • frannyprof

She could totally kill it on the RC but for two things: those eyebrows and that lipstick.

  • ireneY

  • Truthiness2U

I actually like everything about this look, except those horrible shoes. It’s old-school glamour with edge, which suits her. So yeah, I like this a lot more than I would think for Jena, much less with matching one’s hair colour, to lip colour to dress. Oh well. I’m just going to go with it.

  • EEKstl

    Serving up Joan Crawford realness.

    • evave2

YES! Solange was wearing a wedding party dress with really aggressive shoulder pads and I thought that, and then I came here and it is TRUE. Joan Crawford.

  • Adriana

Okay, I’ve liked her ever since I saw her in Saved! but…why does she always look so pleased with herself on the red carpet? I have yet to see her in an ensemble that wows me or makes her look like the fashionista she clearly thinks she is. At least she’s toned down the brows!

  • PeaceBang

I am just loving this! Head to … okay, well the shoes are hiddy but everything else is so much fun.

  • chicagocandy

The shoes say “stripper” but everything else says “no more wire hangers”

  • FibonacciSequins

I see Jena darkened her eyebrows. Wise move. She looks so fabulous here. With her frame and hairstyle, I should be thinking Joan Crawford, but she’s giving me a Rosalind Russell vibe.

  • gefeylich

Huh. She sort of reminds me of an extreme young Meg Ryan – that is, Meg Ryan if she wasn’t America’s Sweetheart but rather a woman who liked to look tough and make edgy fashion choices. Malone should have a lit cigarette hanging off her lips or fingertips to complete this look.

  • KT

I’m probably in the minority here, but I love this look. It’s dramatic as HELL, which she always goes for, but this is definitely one of the most chic and flattering looks I’ve seen her in.

There’s still just a hint of cray, though, which means she hasn’t lost her kooky flair. Bravo, girl.

  • Michele M.

I love the reds on reds, but I just can’t with the lipstick. She favours a heavy hand on her lips and it rarely works for her.

  • marlie

I really like this. I like that she darkened the red in her hair and eyebrows, so it’s not quite so garish. This look has a nice “Old Hollywood” vibe to it.

  • ThaliaMenninger

This is pure Eleanor Parker as the bitchy wrong woman in a million movies and TV shows. Like, Bracken’s World Eleanor Parker.

  • You know what, I was on board until I hit the hooker heels.

  • Wow! This is my favourite look of hers. Beautiful and striking. (Not ok for people to make fun of her gummy smile; some peops just have gummy smiles.)

  • Lisalady161

She looks fabulous…very old school glam. Me likey!

  • GillianHolroyd

thank god she ditched the red eyebrows.

    also, Barbara Stanwyck.

  • Not Blonde

Is it me or is she kinda Joan Crawford? Red + Gold = Christmas and I love it. I can’t tell if the shoes are ugly, but even if they are, I kinda love them, too. She toned down her eyebrows. I think she looks great.

  • Just Me

Way to work that Joan Crawford drag.

  • HelloLongBeach

    She looks stunning!

  • Cameron

It’s extremely dramatic but love it.

  • mila_8

I have an irrational love of this woman. She can wear anything with her smirks and smiles, all works for me,

  • CKMia

Not perfect but still fabulous. The shoes are the right shade of gold and the platforms plays off the 40’s vibe of the dress. She looks like an old Hollywood starlet that somehow became an animated Phoenix.

  • Lizzy

She looks much older than she is. Not in a good way.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

She WOULD pick the most garish shade of red ever.

  • Mediterranean

Love the dress color, and the fabric looks great on her body frame

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

She looks stunning and I love everything that happening here. I don’t even care about the platform shoes.

  • grapecranberry

I’m also mad at the competing reds, but it’s good overall

  • quiltrx

I can’t deal with all the different reds. But she so frequently gets it SO wrong…I’m going to at least give her props for presenting herself as a movie star.

  • Tres Syd Charisse!

  • BuffaloBarbara

I don’t think she’s found the right look for herself yet (or, you know, hired the right stylist). It’s not an awful effort, but I feel like she could really do something smashing with the right dress.

  • That swept-back hairstyle is not her friend. Those of us who have a lot of space between the eyebrows and the hairline should have something to soften the expanse. Also, all those competing reds are making my eyes twitch. But she does have pizazz in spades so she commands attention and manages to bring it all off.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

To me this is a WOW! She’s making all those competing reds WERQ, and that’s quite an accomplishment. LOVE the dress on her!

  • paintedfish

    lovely old hollywood glam

  • chelseaad

She is so freaking gross, I can’t take it.

  • P M

It’s lovely and all, but there’s something very Nancy Reagan-severe about it.
