Robert Downey Jr. at “The Judge” Rome Photocall

Even though this has problems, for once, we’re not actually mad at him. There will be no yelling this time, Robert. We promise. Just gentle, loving judgment.

Okay, starting from the bottom up, we’re beginning to wonder if he has joint problems or something because he rarely sports footwear that doesn’t look like a pair of pillows with laces. We tend to think otherwise, given how physical most of his recent movies have been. He’s always liked sporting the giant kicks with suits. We actually don’t hate the idea anymore, but we tend to hate the way he executes it. Not only is it possible to put together a look that pairs suiting with athletic shoes, it’s actually fairly on trend at the moment. It’s a look we tend to think is better off on the under-40 crowd (as evidenced by those three links), but it’s not impossible for someone RDJ’s age or older to pull it off. It’s just that you have to pay attention to the proportions. The sneaks can’t be a pair of giant rubber and canvas clodhoppers. And they have to have a little style to them. They shouldn’t be the very first part of the outfit your eyes go to, but a little color wouldn’t be a bad idea. Most important of all, for a look like this to work, the suit really needs to be well-tailored and in the skinny-suit style. Some part of the outfit has to look like you’re putting effort in, otherwise you just look like another sloppy, middle-aged guy.

The shoes are terrible, but everything else is a good choice, even the shades. He’s one of the few white men we’ve ever seen who can get away with wildly colored shades. But that suit absolutely NEEDS to be tailored and fitted to him. It’s a shame, because it’s a really nice suit.
