Taking the title from the 1933 Dolores Del Rio movie Flying Down to Rio as its starting point, designer Nicole Miller spun out a tribute to the art and culture of Brazil for spring 2015. And she managed the very best trick of all while doing it: she avoided cliche or cultural appropriation. It’s brilliant, in our eyes, to look at the famous Copacabana Beach sidewalk and make that your main motif, instead of, we don’t know… samba or Carnival, which have both been done to death. Instead, this is an urban, modern, rock-and-roll take, with whimsical pineapple prints and just enough touches of the tropical to keep it all in the realm without being unimaginative about it. Lightly sophisticated and fun, with an attitude, which is pretty much the Nicole Miller style. And as always with Nicole Miller shows, the shoes are KILLA.
