Even though it’s very body-con and we’ve been trying to wave her away from that a bit, we like the dress. The accentuated shoulders look great on her. We’d like it a lot more if she looked like she could breathe in it, though. Still, it’s a striking – and very Fashion Week – kind of outfit.

Speaking of which, if we see one more pair of those facacta Rockstuds, we may start screaming and never stop. They went from being the Fashion Week must-have to the Fashion Week everybody-has. Time to retire this one, ladies. ‘Tis played the fuck out.

  • I like the dress pattern too. She’s wavering now between bodycon and fashion.

As an aside, there’s a new hire in my team who looks JUST like her, and I’d like to tell her so, but I hate to think she might be offended, if she knows who Laverne is. :/ Bah.

    • Loren S

If she knows who Laverne is, then she should also know that she’s beautiful and talented, right?

      • You’d think so, but some may appreciate a trans actor’s talent without wanting to resemble them…

(Possibly unnecessary disclaimer: I use “actor” as a gender-neutral word to refer to everyone who acts, avoiding “actress” in all cases.)

    • Judih1

I think you are right, she might be offended.

    • your face

I know this sounds overly prim, but I think it’s smart to avoid ANY comments about someone’s appearance until you know them pretty well. You never know what will offend people, so why go there?

      • No, I agree with you. There was more than one reason I haven’t told her that. 🙂 But every day I’ve seen her so far, I’m struck by it.

        • I think the way to be most diplomatic about it (should you decide you might burst if you don’t mention it) is to preface everything by saying that you really love Laverne’s look and emerging style and her peculiar über-femininity—and then to emphasize that it’s L.C. who reminds you of your colleague, and not the other way around.

But I totally get not mentioning it at all, too.

  • KinoEye

Saw this on Miss Thing’s Instagram and hoped it would feature here. I also love the shoulder treatment, and the print is different for her. I don’t like peplums in general, but I can get behind this one, since it’s not so exaggerated. Rates a solid Attagirl from me.

  • Kathy

I agree with your assessment completely, Uncles. In particular, we need some Rockstuds Begone.

    • maretha2

Aww, I personally really love the Rockstuds, and I like that she paired ones in a color with this dress. Sometimes you just love the trend even if everyone else is on that bandwagon, too.

  • sojourneryouth

I’m feeling the tiny peplums, which is weird, since I am staunchly anti-peplum, but she looks great! I’m not sold on the fishnets, though. Not sure why.

    • BLauDGaspode

I think the fishnets are too subtle, so it just looks like something weird is going on with her skin. I’m not a real fan of fishnets, but if you’re going to go there, then go there.

      • sojourneryouth

        I think you’re right 🙂 I also prefer my fishnets more aggressively fishnet-y! 🙂

    • Tina M.

I’ve always associated those sort of nude-y fishnets with stage wear. IDK why, maybe I’m watching too much Beyonce concert footage. But agreed that they look weird especially with such a business-looking outfit.

  • gabbilevy

As much as I like this, it does feel like a step back, only because she’s made *such strides recently. If this happened before all that, this would be a winner. Still, a good look from the ankles up.

  • Qitkat

Very pretty. Even if the shoes are overdone, which I hadn’t realized, they are the perfect companion for this dress.

  • Scott Cooper

On a different note, she’d benefit from some actual hosiery instead of those fishnets. Something that evens out the color of her legs. She looks bruised.

  • Another Kate

The cut and fit of the dress are great, even the peplum (I loathe peplums — pepla? — as a matter of policy), but I’m going to step out of the mainstream and say that the print makes her look like a screen door, especially from a distance. I mean, I look at the thing and it shimmers.

I’m on board with the styling, though. She has such pretty big eyes.

    • Gatto Nero

I loathe peplums, too, but here they help balance out the shoulder treatment.

  • SugarSnap108

The cut of the dress is great on her. I do wish it weren’t quite so tight … It almost looks like she’s being forced to stand with her legs crossed.

  • Anna

I like the print and LOVE how this plays up her shoulders, but would love it more if the hem was a couple of inches longer and if Ms. Laverne didn’t have to hold her breath to wear it.

  • Dany

Ladies, say NO to hose that makes you look like you have reptile legs. Please.

  • Raspberry2012

LOVE IT!! She looks awesome in the dress, and I love the shoes! Snaps all around!

  • Alex Palombo

I’m feeling the dress, not loving the shoes. Noticed she really has a thing for fishnets.

  • boweryboy

oh. She’s back to that awful wig.

    • prettyinmink

I know good lacefronts cost a lot of money but I really wish she would invest in some good ones. She has such a beautiful face and that wig just ruins it.

    • Anna

It’s looking really fried, the hair is more of a quibble for me than the shoes.

  • juniper

why are those shoes popular?! I feel like they were played out a year ago so I’m surprised they were a FW must-have…rabble.

  • deelup

Too tight, too short, too shiny.

  • LadyVimes

    No. More. Fishnets.

  • marlie

Great dress on Laverne, but I wish the dress was a skosh bigger and a skosh longer, so she can breathe and to balance out the top and bottom. Her makeup looks good, and while I still think she needs a wig consult, this ‘do looks good on her. And I think I get why she’s wearing the fishnets, but I wish she’d ditch those too.

    • Jessica Freeman

I am at a total loss on her love for the fishnets, and genuinely am interested in why they are worn. I notice Beyonce does it a lot when performing as well. I understand the need or want for hosiery, but nude fishnets baffle me.

      • marlie

I think they even out the skin tone and hide blemishes without really looking like one is wearing hose (unless you’re up close or are zooming in with a camera). In the first picture, you can barely tell she’s wearing them, and her skin tone on her shins is less uneven.

        • tpalgal

The problem is, when you’re on the RC, there will be high def and zoom lenses. There will be close-ups of every part of you. I would hate to think what my legs would look like under that kind of microscope! I might resort to fishnets, too. Still, maybe leg makeup to even out skin tone, instead? I don’t know what the answer is to having your body examined with such scrutiny. We’re terrible people.

          • MilaXX

Body paint would work but takes a skilled make up artist to apply and set properly so it doesn’t get on clothing. A spray tan might help, but then she’d have to be careful her legs didn’t end up a different color than her body.

          • tpalgal

I think I’m glad I’m not a celebrity…much easier to be here at home in my jammies. 🙂

        • NinjaCate

They make more sense onstage though with the different coloured lights and everything. On the RC it looks out of place I think.

        • maretha2

Yes, as someone who was not blessed with glorious gams, the fishnets are sometimes a sneaky little trick to give some support and camouflage for the legs in situations when you still want a more bare-leg look. In the winter I am addicted to my tights and no one will pry them away from me, but in the summer I don’t want thick tights and I also don’t want shiny hose. Voila! fishnets. BUT … I am never ever on a RC or being photographed.

      • greyhoundgirl

I think someone here once explained that they act a little bit as Spanx for legs, which would explain them as performance wear, but not red carpet.

  • Kent Roby

Laverne looks great; and I don’t even have a problem today with the fishnets (probably because I’m still on a high from the Thom Browne collection).
ETA: I plan to hate fishnets again tomorrow though!

  • MilaXX

The dress needs to be a size bigger and an inch or two longer. Yes the shoes are played but her hair and makeup looks great. She’s getting there.

    • NinjaCate

YES! Her dresses are always an inch or two too short!

  • Lily

No doubt she’s got great gams, but the hem length on this keeps it in the body con column for me. A real fashionista would let the length down at least an inch.

  • ballerinawithagun

I just thought reptile legs, as someone below said, until they pointed out the fishnets….I’ve read that Beyoncé wears fishnets on stage and I know Ice Follies and people on stage wear them as a sort of camouflage that works from a distance. But up close, flesh colored fishnets are a big NO! As many have said, larger and longer and a V neck instead of a high neck would improve this. I like the idea of the dress though.

    • MilaXX

Lots of performers do. JLo does as well. As you mentioned up close it looks terrible, but works as stage wear. The problem is unless you are older like Meryl Streep or Helne Mirren it’s considered bad form to wear hosiery on the RC. (no idea why). Laverne’s only other choice would be a good makeup artist who could apply body paint to her legs to get them completely even toned.

  • Imasewsure

Gawd these shoes are worse than the naked shoe… We need to start a BK Wave of Destruction where we attack tired-ass trends on the RC with tiny little scissors and a big ole attitude. They will thank us later!!

  • Jessica Freeman

I realize the lady stars pose like that because it makes their bodies look “better” (for lack of really understanding)…but Laverne here looks like she HAS to stand like that or she won’t be able to breathe. Bless. I love that dress. I dislike the shoes with the dress.

    • Vegas Girl

Whenever I see a lady star posing like that, it makes me think she has to pee.

  • JasmineAM

her makeup always seems to be a bit too pale for her and heavy handed.

    • Boulderista

my first thought was that it looked like her face was wearing her rather than the other way around.

  • Emily

Definitely too tight, but I like the style for her. I think the peplum works well to balance out the stronger shoulder – an extra inch or two on the skirt would also help. Hate everything happening from the legs down. Those stockings cheapen the whole look, and the shoes are terrible. And I just give up on that wig.

  • tpalgal

So tight. What is it with the ladystars who are afraid to go up a size? She would look so much better with another inch or so of fabric.

    No to the fishnets.

No to the shoes – played the fuck out indeed, uncles. It seems like there have been two shoes this summer: these Valentinos and the ubiquitous Stuart Weitzman Nudist sandal.

  • Noah

Quibbles: Take it up a size, throw on a pair of oxblood pumps, and rethink the hosiery.

That’s a seriously great dress, though.

  • lunchcoma

I like the dress, but that, the fishnets, and the shoes are too much. Different styling was in order here.

  • alyce1213

Four inches longer and a size bigger, switch out the shoes, and we’d be in business — it’s a really cool dress. I’m more adverse to the facacta Rockstuds than the ubiquitous Nudes because they’re more ugly and less versatile. I desperately want to slip her a note begging her to stop crossing her feet like that. Also, I get that she wants to have long hair, but it doesn’t have to be that long. I’d cut it off at the shoulder.

    • BLauDGaspode

      I will co-sign the note.

    • ThaliaMenninger

That pretzel twisting leg thing she ALWAYS does makes me crazy. You don’t always have to look like you have to pee. And I also agree with the four inches longer and a bit larger in the skirt in general.

  • quiltrx

I like the dress, but I think the waistline (denoted by the flaps) is sitting a little too high for her.
And I’m just going to say this…not for Laverne specifically, but for all those in general who wear wigs. I cannot for the life of me understand purchasing a wig from the “visible roots” collection.

  • I photographed street style photos in front of lincoln center for two days and definitely saw way too many of those studded shoes

    • Qitkat

I’ll bet that was quite entertaining; you must have seen a huge range of looks. Do you work freelance, or for a specific publication?

      • Freelance (link to my portfolio is in my profile, instagram account is AdriannaGrezak), though I currently pay my bills as a Photo Editor/Production Specialist for a company called 1stdibs.

I like shooting there because it’s a good way to practice or develop my portfolio with willing participants. It’s also fascinating to observe, such an odd display of behavior. Herds of photographers run to somebody remotely famous or photogenic. Some people are awkward – they clearly put a lot of time and effort into their look, but they’ll stand there and text while photographers take their picture. I also saw some celebrities, including Paris and Nicky Hilton (That was crazy).

Oh yeah, I’m surprised to say that there are way more interesting looks in February than there were this September.

        • Qitkat

People watching, the most unpredicable/predictable sport 😉 I found a link on E! showing a lot of street style, which made me think of you.
I’ll check out your Instagram. It must be difficult to make a good living with serious photography any more, so many people out there shooting and the ease of putting up pictures on the net.

          • I heard that a lot when I left a stable but stressful career in publishing to start a career in photography. I found that the opposite is true – there are new demands for professional photography, such as e-commerce. I got my first product photography job in NYC with zero studio experience, and 4 months later it led my current stress-free, entry level position that pays $10,000 more than my publishing job did.

Starting out is the difficult part. I “interned” for a Williamsburg photographer for one day before I realized she had no intention to include in me in photoshoots or post-production, but take advantage of my publishing/marketing experience (she wanted me to promote her book for free). When I started I shot free portraits for bloggers to develop my portfolio, but I was incredibly frustrated by how much they acted like entitled, paying clients.

  • J.W.

I think the fishnets with the rock studs doesn’t work. That said, everybody at Fashion Week may HAVE those rock studs, but I don’t and I want them…in black matte with a short heel.

  • FibonacciSequins

I’d like this dress a lot more if it were just a bit longer and not so tight.

  • Kaonashi

She would look great if that dress was a size bigger. It’s much too tight.

  • carrie

At $1000 a pair, those bitches better wear their rockstuds everywhere.

    • Nika E

Thats what I was thinking. I’d wear the heel down on those bitches.

  • Beto

I am sorry, but does anyone else think that something looks odd about these shoes? I had to do a double take, but the studs on these “Valentino” pumps are not the same as the ones online or retailers. I could be wrong, but something is just not right.

  • GinnyThePainter

I, too, am done with facacta rockstuds. Wait, what are facacta rockstuds? The shoes? The bling on the shoes? What the facacta?

  • Nika E

Her make up always looks cakey. I think she’s gorgeous, she should ease up on the foundation. Also, the dress seems too short. Maybe to the knee? And I need new hair. Im over this tired lace front.

  • evave2

    She looks great.

  • NinjaCate

I like the dress a lot. It suits her. But once again, it’s TOO SHORT! Lol. She always wears her dresses at that length and something about the way it hits her is very unflattering I think. Like, literally an inch or two extra and it would be perfect. Her makeup and hair look amazing though. I’m not sure what she did but her hair looks revived somehow. Very chic and sexy and it frames her face really well.

  • cocohall

Terrific silhouette, a bit too tight. I wish she would do away with about 10 inches of hair. I’m just going to pretend I didn’t see the shoes. But on the whole, she looks amazing. She seems to be moving in a good direction with her style.

Has anyone seen Lady Valor, a documentary about Kristin Beck, a former Navy Seal who transitioned recently? It has been on CNN. Absolutely fascinating look at an extremely brave individual. And also an individual with lots of company, as the documentary says that upwards of 20% of transsexuals have/or are currently serving in the military.

  • Ashleigh

seriously – just 1/2 size bigger!

  • the webmistress

The dress is too short and too tight. But the main thing I dislike about her photos is that she is always standing like that. It’s really unflattering to her legs.

  • E. D.

Too tight, but would be great in the right size.

  • demidaemon

I would love this if it were about two inches longer. As is, I like. I must say that her hair game is mightily improved.

    • conniemd

I think the fact that it is too short makes it look too tight. It is body hugging, but doesn’t appear constrictive or pulling, but because it is short, it makes it look tight.

      • demidaemon

That’s a good point that I think most of us hadn’t considered. It does explain why it looks tighter from the hips down as opposed to the bodice.

  • GeoDiva

    Nude fishnets? Hmmm….

  • Mothra

I think the dress is too short and too snug. Also, didn’t she say she was going to do something about that hair?

  • LibKat

A slosh too tight and too short. She almost makes up for the ghastly shoes with the cuff. She has such a beautiful face and looks so happy to be where she is. Take a note Lena Dunham and Kristen Stewart.

  • pdquick

This is nicest thing I am ever going to say about a peplum: that is just enough peplum.

  • holla

stop posing like you gotta pee. otherwise, very lovely. I want my hair to look like that.

  • dustinrhodes

  • AnneElliot

This post made my day because of the inclusion of the word “facacta.” Thank you, uncles!

  • altermyego

I just love how she always looks poised and happy in every picture we see of her.

Even though the shoes may be played out, I think they’re a good match for this outfit. So she should be able to keep them and let everyone
    else get rid of them

  • Lilithcat

    Hate the shoes.

Cute dress, but the proportions would work better if it were just a tad longer.

  • R.A.

Excellent deployment of the word “facacta.”

  • bayusc

All the women ditching their “rockstud” Valentinos as per TLO instruction can dispose of them right this way. I’ll gladly take them. Size 7 1/2, please.

  • dschubba

She really needs to quit with those fishnets.

  • Laverne, you know I’m a flag waving stan of yours, but please, no more fishnets.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

If she’d gone up a size and added 2″ to the length it’d be a WERQ for me.

  • melanie0866

Tooooo tight. And is she wearing sheer fishnets? Just makes her legs look scaled.

  • Kimberlini

Minor fit issues aside, that’s a great dress on her!

  • Ali2044

I kind of wish she’d go a little darker with her hair, like a chocolate auburn. It’s looking a little over-processed. I think she’s finding her fashion feet though, her frocks are just getting better and better.
