Richard Armitage in Burberry at the “Into the Storm” Premiere

Posted on August 06, 2014

There seems to be a red carpet trend of moving away from the navy blue banker and job interview suits and an opening up of what shades a blue suit can be. We’re digging it. And we love this suit:

But – and we realize we sound like a broken record, but hey, it’s not our fault they all keep making the same mistakes over and over again – the fit here is way off. Looking at the model, this was clearly meant to be a skinny suit, but it feels like they just sized everything up to get him to fit into it. The pants are balloony and the arms are way too short on the jacket. It’s a shame, because it really looks good on him otherwise. Love the tie. And the grooming’s on point – so long as one learns to sigh and just accept the neck beard. Like all trends, that too, will go away eventually.

I’m sorry, were you saying words?

      • Mrs. Julien

They said, “Armitage, beard, beard, Armitage.” I’m 14% sure that’s it.

        • Sarah

All I heard was, “Armitage hubba hubba yum swoon.” I don’t know who this man is but I’m going to find out.

          • Mrs. Julien

You need to stop everything you are doing and go watch a BBC miniseries called North and South. Not the one with Murphy from Remington Steele. The one from 2004. YOU’RE WELCOME.

            • smh4748

Yes! I actually find the heroine in that to be a little irritating, but I would/have watched it over and over because he makes my loins quiver in that film. Is “loins quiver” gross? Sorry. So true though.

            • Sophie

I didn’t actually see that more than once, because he was not enough to make up for the irritating heroin and the un-historical ending. Kissing in the train station? (I loved him in it, really.)

            • portlandmermaid

“You’re coming home with me?” Why yes, Mr. Thornton, yes I am.

Yes yes yes yes yes <3

            • Sarah

Thanks for the suggestion! So…he’s British. I’m done for. He hasn’t perchance done any nude scenes with Hiddles, has he? If not, can someone make that happen? Please and thank you!

            • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I’ve watched the rejected proposal scene from North and South about a billion times. *swoon*

            • librarygrrl64

              Co-signed x1000.

    • Maria Parramore

Hot damn! I can’t come up with anything more sophisticated than “Mama like”. I could watch “North and South” all day and twice on Sunday because of him.

      • Le_Sigh

I’ll even tolerate his seasons on Spooks because WOOF.

        • Liz

I could only get through one of them myself.

          • Mrs. Julien

I just watched the first season for The Macfadyen.

    • Noah

It’s a good thing those pants are balloony, in a way. If they had been fitted, I may not have been able to control myself.

      • OffToSeeHim

You said a mouthful there, sister!

    • Jessica Freeman

      I really love the tie.

    • Dany

He can go into my “Dwarf” hole any time with his sword….

    • Danielle

Side note, I won’t be watching this movie. I live this stuff every spring.

      • Kent Roby

Besides, I didn’t see a single shark flying around in the tornadoes, so why bother?

        • OffToSeeHim

And we get to the most damning critique of the movie – if it’s not a sharknado, why watch it?

          • Kent Roby

‘xactly! Besides, having been through a plain ole middle-of-the-night tornado that ripped my roof off a few years ago, it’s probably best that I skip this movie! Similarly, I’m just uncomfortable enough with flying to avoid watching any movie involving problems with planes!

        • Danielle

I’m now basing all life decisions on this. “Wanna go get dinner?” “Oh, I don’t know. There won’t be sharks flying around, why don’t we just stay in?”

    • Conniepop

Gosh, he is so beautiful. I am glad to see you are featuring him more. His pants may be a bit baloony, but put that man in some denim and watch out.

    • NMMagpie

My heart just leapt out of my chest. He’s perfect.

    • Anna

I prefer the fitted suit but if this guy was my bank manager, I’d be making all kinds of appointments to discuss my invest portfolio all the time (I would also have to find out how to start an investment portfolio).

      • Nikko Viquiera

investments? I’d probably be just handing him all my money.

    • JauntyJohn

I shall never accept the neck beard!
As a bearded man I weep at the sight of such handsome, well groomed men who lose the opportunity to highlight an already handsome jaw and elevate their entire look by simply shaving less than 25% of what they would ordinarily shave.

With that said, it’s a crying shame this fit on this throws all proportion off… SO close.
      Swing-and-a-miss, I guess.
Big Points for the effort though, Mr. Armitage.

    • Scimommy

One of the biggest mysteries of my life is why Richard Armitage doesn’t do anything for me. Seriously. By all rights I should be a fangirl of his. Seems like a very nice guy, though.

      • GillianHolroyd

He’s an intermittent arouser. This picture? I had to open it on my desktop monitor before I was ready to believe it was him and as such, I’ll pass. North and South, yes. But I’ve watched another show (nameless to protect the guilty) and it wasn’t until 2 or 3 episodes in that I tweaked that it was him. He was his usual broody self but still… unrecognizable.

        • heybethpdx

Not to out the guilty, but if the show (no matter how bad!) had good Armitage coverage, what was it? I love me some Armitage and don’t want to miss any of his onscreen work! I watched the very end of the series Vicar of Dibley since the Bitter Kittens alerted me to the fact he was in it – I’d never heard of the show so I kinda didn’t know how to take it, but he was still dreamy. His IMDB pic alone kills. I like him pretty well in Robin Hood but I tried jumping into MI:5 for him alone and just couldn’t figure out what was going on.

          • GillianHolroyd

            mumble mumble Ultimate Force

            *hanging head in shame*

            • heybethpdx

I am shameless & will check it out!

      • Alicia

He only worked for me as Thorin Oakenshield.

    • Wink

Nicely done, even with the fit issues.

      • Kathy

Those bedroom eyes make up for everything else.

    • Hetha Innis

The fit on the pants is terrible! LIke he has thunder thighs or something. So odd. But I love that tie.

    • smayer

That jacket is doing all kind of unflattering things to him. No, no, no.

Also, a movie with fire tornadoes? Count me in! I LOVE disaster movies!

    • schadenfreudelicious

whenever I am in a bad mood I just go watch North and South and everything is all better :)

      • Bad Idea Jeans

        YES YES YES.

    • FibonacciSequins

That’s a gorgeous suiting fabric. The tie is great but should be worn with a suit that has a narrow cut. I don’t particularly like the way the suit fits the model, either.

    • JalfaB

Frankly, the fit of the pants on the model is pretty nasty – there’s no room for his Goods…

    • Sarah

Hubba hubba. I see your ill-fitting suit, but I am mesmerized by piercing man-eyes. As for the movie, did we really need a new, gnarlier version of Twister? (NOPE.)

    • Imasewsure

Yes love the suit on the model and the color on this pretty man… fit is bizarre and yet comfy I’m sure

    • traceyishere

The skinny tie is wrong on him, especially with the way the suit fits him.

    • Bad Idea Jeans

I prefer my Thorin Oakenshield with 70% less beard. This beard only goes with the longhair version.

    • Scott Finley

As much as I love Burberry suits I do find their current fits to be problematic. Even fits designed for guys who are athletic or have a bit of muscle still don’t seem to fit well. The torsos are cut way too slim and the lengths are too long and the widths at the bottom are too wide. I’ve heard this from several other people of varying builds so I think that’s a good sign that Christopher Bailey needs to revisit his line’s fit offerings. They’re just not flattering at the moment.

    • conniemd

Oooh a colored tie. The model had a dull dark one. I love patterned ties on men with blue suits. The colors go wo well together.

    • MilaXX

Shame about the fit because I’m loving the subtle pattern on the suit.

    • elizonthelam

He’s currently John Procter in The Crucible in London; the beard is for the role and i must say it looked pretty damn appropriate/good in that setting. The beard in this setting? Not so much.

Even if he is so damn handsome anyway.

    • decormaven

Gorgeous suit, poor fit. Gorgeous man!

    • Moni

Love him, love the suit, love the tie, hate the fit. After seeing the slim-fit version on the model, I can’t help thinking this would look great on a Benedict Cumberbatch / Tom Hiddleston / Eddie Redmayne body type.

    • OffToSeeHim

What? Suit? What suit? There seems to be a ringing in my ears and I’m a little short of breath.

    • OffToSeeHim

The comments are hysterical – the Bitter Kittens losing their collective shit. We’re all just babbling variations of “likelikelikelike” – nobody cares how his suit fits. 😀

    • unbornfawn

He looks as put together as it is possible in a poor fitting suit. Too bad. He should have knocked this look out of the park. Oh, and by the way. Swoon.

    • Qitkat

The skinny horizontal striped tie has got to go. Looks cheap, and we know it isn’t. Suit fit is an issue, but we’ve seen worse. I need to start going to the doctor’s office or the grocery store more to flip through the dreaded People magazine, I’m lost as to who he is, as I am so many these days ;p

      • NMMagpie

Just search: John Thornton, Guy of Gisborne, Thorin Oakenshield, Lucas North, and the Handsome Stranger (Vicar of Dibley). You won’t be sorry.

    • KES4K

I will never accept the neck beard. Never

    • gingerella

He is lovely, and although I see the flaws the Uncles point out, I actually think he deserves props for the way he dresses for his body type. He doesn’t have an exaggerated V-shaped torso like so many actors do, which means he (or his stylist) has to choose much more carefully.

    • Beto

Armitage who? First time ever I hear/read a mention of him.

      • siriuslover

WHAT? I only say this because I love him (especially when he’s beardless). He was in The Hobbit and North and South (a British television mini-series).

        • Beto

Oh! he’s not well known here in Colombia.

          • siriuslover

That’s OK. I’m a professed Anglophile and fell in love with him when I saw him as the tortured lead in North and South. And he couldn’t have been more different as that elf dude Thorin in The Hobbit. I was hoping the beard was for the sequel, but it’s already in post-production.

            • Corsetmaker

              Dwarf dude :)

    • siriuslover

Richard Armitage is not a “big and tall” man, but this suit seems to puff him up–and not in any flattering way. And he has such a beautiful face, I hate to see it hidden by the beard.

    • boweryboy

The top and bottom half look like they belong to two different people. I’m not seeing much of a neck beard here. He’s serving up some nice face but the rest is meh.

    • Kirstin McAulay

Beard is for a role and he is a martini man (anytime, anyplace, anywhere)

    • NBG

I don’t mind the pants because sometimes that loose of a fit is what the dude start requests but the sleeves are ridiculous.

And I vow to keep fighting the good fight against neck beards!

    • quiltrx

I was ready to say I hadn’t seen him in anything, but IMDb corrected me. Seeing him without the beard helps, too. He was on a Miss Marple ep.
Light eyes/dark hair always gets me. And he looks like he’d be pretty charming. Count me in for him (not the movie though).

    • Shawn EH

It looks better on him than the model, nonetheless.

    • Gaby

I love that textile intensely and wish I had a suit of my own in it. GIMME.

Sorry, is there a man there?

    • Corsetmaker

      Armitage – yum
Surely that model can’t sit down!

    • lilibetp

He has to have the beard for a play he’s doing. Otherwise, I’m sure RA would NEVER have neck beard.

    • MoHub

Armitage has a fantastic jawline; he needs to lose the beard and let us see it.

    • JeanDNelson

    • Sophie

I think I’d be willing to overlook the neckbeard if we had a profile picture. His nose would make up for the poor fit and the beard. I think his hair should be a bit longer.

    • LibKat

With better tailoring that suit would be killer with his eyes. Disagree with the uncles about the tie. I think his chest is too broad for such a skinny tie. It looks like an afterthought, not a statement.

      • Melanie

same. i like the tie in & of itself but it’s not working here.

    • Presumptuous Insect

Cripes, he is hairy enough in The Hobbit. Can’t he get rid of it so we can see the pretty?

    • Vic

Beard or no beard…yum. He must be growing his facial hair for the third Hobbit film.

    • RutGot

      I guess I don’t understand how he doesn’t look like a banker.

    • e jerry powell

I shall greatly enjoy taking every last piece of Burberry off of him and burning it. Damn Euro-skeletons.
