Kate Mara in SoHo, New York

Posted on August 12, 2014

She should send a thank you note to Michael Kors, because those shoes are the only thing doing any work here.

This look is a bit too awkward to be street-stylish (at least in our eyes, owing mostly to the terrible proportions, which make her look stumpy and wider than she is), but we give her some credit for having a genuinely funky casual style in the Chloe Sevigny mode. We have to admit, if we saw any gal walking down the street in this ensemble, we’d notice them, famous or not. Of course we’d immediately start mentally “correcting” their outfit, but still.

We sound like we’re overpraising this, so let’s keep it simple: we dig her taste in shoes.

    • Mothra

      Ug. That HAIR!

      • Leah Elzinga

is it SUPPOSED to be orange AND black AND blond and yet none of the above?

      • NBG

Her previous hair color suited her much more.

      • moxx

It makes her look like a who from whoville.

    • Imma Mäder

I love the top too. And the pendant. Re: yesterday, Pendants definitely need to make a comeback since they’re my favourite for of necklace

      • Constant Reader

As another BK suggested to me when I said that brooches need to make a comeback, if you love pendants, wear them!

        • Imma Mäder

Thanks, I definitely wear them. But I like seeing them on other people too, that’s the main motivation for my comeback-wish!

    • Thomas

Who’s the guy standing next to Kate? I want to see him! Move over Kate, you’re blocking my view!

      • http://www.paintedvanity.com paintedvanity

        I think he’s Johnny Wujek!

        • Thomas

Good call! Now the shorts and shoes make sense!

          • http://www.paintedvanity.com paintedvanity

Totally. The tattoos confirmed it for me. . . and the fact that he has posted a lot of photos of Kate on his Instagram lately!

    • stellavision

I’m much more interested in the shoes of the guy next to her.

      • sugarkane105

        THOSE are cute.

      • Thomas

I’m much more interested in everything about the guy next to her. He’s pulling off those patterned pink shorts quite well!

    • Imasewsure

As mentioned… the hair… yuck but I can dig her style overall… I like funky even if it isn’t totally flattering. Shoes are super cute but I’d never pay for Kors when there are plenty of other brands in that price range (and his stuff seems cheap to me for some reason)

      • Little_Olive

I get the same vibe from the Duchess’ line. Its like they are already an imitation of a “higher” brand.

    • sugarkane105

      Normcore Clown.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

If I weren’t blinded by jealousy of Random Guy’s shorts and the knowledge that I couldn’t wear them, I’d say Kate was adorable in every way. I love her hair and those funky shoes. Even though I don’t believe they are really by Michael Kors, because I don’t see a leopard print anywhere.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I have a very similar pair which *are* leopard print (and by Clarks, not Michael Kors!)

      • Jennifer Schiller

After reading your comment I think you may have reached why I hate leopard print. It’s not that it can’t be employed wonderfully (it certainly can), but the Michael Kors leopard and red/cream leather on every working professional between 20 and 50′s ideal style Pinterest board makes my head explode.

    • nannypoo

Does she not have a navel?

    • leahpapa

      I think it’s adorable.

    • hughman

She’s looking very Jodie Foster-ish. *cough*

Also that purse seems counter-intuitive to this whole look.

      • kimmeister

        Good call on the purse.

    • KingCrazy

I have a serious gay man crush on her, but I don’t like anything here.

At least her hair is slowly rebounding.

    • Constant Reader

I blame the jeans for the stumpifying effect. If she had on a pair of skinnies this whole outfit would be fab.

      • kimmeister

The jeans are bad yes, but low-rise pants + cropped top on a long waisted person are always a bad idea.

    • Nicole

I didn’t realize I was that into legs – hello hot random guy.

      • kimmeister

Sometimes you just don’t know until you see the right pair. Men’s legs are the only thing that interest me about sport of soccer.

        • Snailstsichr

I thought that was the only point to soccer!

    • ShaoLinKitten

I wouldn’t have recognized her if I saw her walking down the street. She looks so blah.

    • FibonacciSequins

I don’t know why she’d want to pair such stylish shoes with jeans that look like they belong in the trash.

    • Qitkat

Hunh. For a strolling the city streets, not trying to sell an empty purse or wearing inappropriately high heels or faking an exit from a trendy (spa/gym/market/boutique/restaurant), wearing one’s own clothes and minding one’s own business, this is pretty low-key and cute at the same time. She is totally put together without overdoing any one element. And I love the top.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I agree. I see no stumpifying effect because all I see is a normal, everyday person having some shoe fun.

      • Hermione

I also agree. She looks great, and I think the jeans look great on her and in no way to they make her look wider than she is. I don’t think it’s hard to notice her flat stomach; she’s perfectly slim. I also love the top and love love the shoes and the whole outfit.

      • DuBey2

And I LOVE that she is not “showing” us a bag!

    • MilaXX

I like the whole look, odd proportions and all. Well not the bag, that’s too precious for a street look like this. She appears to be growing out the super light hair so I’m assuming it was for her superhero movie.

    • H2olovngrl

You were on to something earlier, when you compared her to Ali McGraw. I totally see it now.

    • SewingSiren

      Love the shoes.

    • MissusBee

I approve of celebrity ladies rocking the flats. Clearly I don’t get to do much approving, so thanks Kate for that. The top is semi-interesting. The jeans ‘aren’t doing her any favors’ as my mom would say.

      Which reminds me.

Dear fashion journalists of the world:
Boyfriend jeans are the worst. If you have hips. Because you’re not a boy.
      Exhibit A.
      I rest my case.
P.S. Thanks for ruining my summer.

      • NBG

        Preach!

    • KT

I hate those shoes and think they look really awkward with this outfit. Then again, she usually looks at least somewhat awkward. She desperately wants to pull off edgy, but it doesn’t come as effortlessly for her as it does for her sister. She needs to veer in a slightly nuanced direction, because her current attempts at “edge” keep coming up short. The “urban tomboy” look suits you, girl, as long as you don’t try to pull off anything too tricky.

And for god’s sake, get a hair consultant. It’s been looking really shitty for a while now.

    • Janet B

      Oh my gosh!
Those shoes! I love the retro style, the buckles, that they’re black & white, and probably comfortable.

(making good on my promise to praise good looking shoes)

    • Rhonda Shore

I LOVE those shoes! In fact, I like the whole get-up.

    • Bad Idea Jeans

I am so happy that monk-strap shoes and all related shoes that I loved so much in the mid-80s are now making a comeback! I’m going to have to grow out my bangs again so they hang across my face and start dressing in all black, too. I’ll let stirrup pants stay in the 80s, though.

      • SoAnnaPropriate

Stirrup pants! I had blotted that chapter from my memory bank.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Those are not creepers by my definition of creepers, but I flove them, anyway. (Autocorrect wanted to change “flove them” to “floret hem.” Autocorrect knows I am at T-Lo.)

    • Gatto Nero

The creepers are cute, but I’m allergic to the obvious artfully distressed jean. If the wearer hasn’t legitimately earned those holes and fading through years of wear and washing, it all just looks a little ridiculous to me.

    • marlie

Again, I disagree with TLo about Kate’s shoes. I think they’re kind of ugly. BUT I do like her street style SO much better than her red carpet style. You can at least see her personality come through here.

    • Tee

I missed Elaine’s shoes from Seinfeld. I’m glad they’re back!

    • evave2

Why are she and her sister always being shown as some kind of icons? I like the shoes i like the top I am sick and tired of “kneed” jeans (or whatever they call them) but her hair really makes my eyes cross.

I don’t hate her or her look here. I guess I just don’t care. I will say that I like people that actually look like people MUCH more than whenever we have Taylor Swift’s Empty Purse Tour. Those pics give me agida.

    • Snailstsichr

      Seriously cute shoes. Bravo MK!

    • livesarah

There’s a shop down the road from me that sells clothes like that top, but never anything cropped. That’s because the shop is an old-school boutique for ladies of large build and colourful taste. Kate Mara doesn’t have colourful taste, she just tries too hard to be ‘fashion’. I do kind of love the shoes though.

    • quiltrx

**making grabby hands at those fabulous shoes**

    • frannyprof

Dude, if you’re gonna wear creepers, wear *Creepers.*

    • WaterGhost

She’s wearing three different articles with three different black’n’white patterns that are nonetheless similar in that they all involve small shapes. It’s a mess. Those three patterns are all fighting each other for attention. Dizzying. She can keep one black and white pattern/object. The second pattern must be switched to either solid black or solid white, and the third pattern must be changed to a solid colour. Hey, that was fun!

Oh, and she needs to shave her head.

    • DagnyReardon

Isn’t she like 85 lbs? She looks like a linebacker in this outfit.

    • SewingSiren

An aside: I really thought the clicky would lead to a picture of Tom or Lorenzo wearing black and white creepers.

    • PinkyK

      Love the shoes!

Wasn’t there a whole episode of Sinefeld in which Elaine had some issue with shoes a lot like these?

      • Kitten Mittons

“Oooh, look at you, with the Botticelli’s.”

      • Anna

Just saw it last night! “She wants my shoes?! What kind of person is this? She is not getting ‘em!”

    • carnush

Super cute. I would wear this. If I could wear crop tops.

    • Wink

I like the idea, but those particular jeans aren’t working. The top and shoes are okay, and she looks at ease… so that counts for something.

    • boweryboy

It’s a tiny bit Bananarama and for that I love it. Also, girlfriend does have excellent taste in shoes (and judging by the snippet in the thumbnail, men as well). Plus also, this is another outfit I would totally wear if I were a woman.

    • Lilithcat

If I found those jeans in my closet, I’d throw them in the trash. They’re not even rag bag material. Ugh.

      • Qitkat

It’s funny, even though I posted earlier that this look suits her, I totally agree with you for you and me!

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

The hair hurts my eyes. Urgh.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

      I kinda like it . . . for street wear . . .

    • picadillos

I adore the shoes. But then I own creepers (still). And I like the outfit. My kind of 90′s.

    • Ruby_Red

If she had on a pair of black skinny jeans she’d look good. It’s the grungy holey jeans that are bringing this down for me.

    • Lily

I totally would have worn that outfit in my college years. Shoes, especially! Love it when celebs dress like we mere plebes.

    • deaconessd

Would have been soooo chic with white, higher waist, wide-leg trousers.

    • Kikishua

Her hair always looks wrong to me. I think it must be (in part) the colour, but this straight style is particularly unflattering, to my eyes.

    • julnyes

They guy next to her has very pretty legs.

      • Mothra

        They look so smooth.

        • julnyes

yes, well moisturized as well. Also, nice muscle definition.

    • Don Hackett

that clearasil colored lipstick is awful.
      …..sleah in norcal

      Elaine Benis shoes.
