Kate Mara in New York City

Posted on August 11, 2014

If she had big round sunglasses and a straw bag, this would be perfectly 1970 minimal chic; like something Ali MacGraw or Megan Draper would wear.

It’s cute. We feel the bag and the shoes are fighting with each other, though. And the bag’s losing. It’s too heavy and dark when all the other pieces are light and colorful. We like the idea of wearing a pendant with this (and have long thought the pendant was due for a jewelry comeback), but it’s a weird length with that high waistline.

Still, it’s a cute and slightly edgy look, which is appreciated by us, since so many sidewalk promenades are conservative in their style approach.

Am I wrong for wanting some chunky aqua jewelry to go with this?

      • Wink

How about an aqua bag (instead of that heavy black one)?

        • Thomas

Either that or a white or straw bag with aqua jewelry.

        • 3boysful

Possibly one of the few Coach bags I loathe (save for the ones in the Coach fabric).

      • J.W.

Blue and yellow – complimentary colors…

        • Thomas

Well, blue and orange technically, but close enough :)

          • J.W.

            Yup.

      • Aurora Meyer

Some turquoise would really bring it to the next level. It could play off the tooth necklace to make this look kinda rugged.

    • Thomas

She’s pulling off that tangerine surprisingly well.

    • rkdgal

I feel like those shoes are better in theory than in practice. I like how they look in profile (without feet in them), but they look awkward to me. Strap or flap, not both.

      • Thomas

Yeah, they look awkward to me too, but fine without feet in them. It’s weird.

Loafer janes? This is less chocolate-peanut butter and more pizza-taco…

      • Constant Reader

A local restaurant makes a taco pizza that’s delicious. As we say in RI, “sweahtagahd.” :)

But I agree with your point about the shoes…

        • Aurora Meyer

Antonio’s! Keeping us from going hungry after midnight!

          • Constant Reader

            I get mine at Dan’s Place. :)

        • http://instagram.com/nevareese International Model

…that does sound pretty dang delicious…

        • AnguaVonUberwald

I saw a “spaghetti taco” listed in a menu the other day. I…can’t even imagine what that might be.

      • kimmeister

        Their very existence perplexes me.

    • decormaven

That bag is completely wrong for that summer look the stylist was attempting to create. She should look at Ali McGraw’s early 70s aesthetic- Kate could work it well.

    • Anna

In the third photo, Kate has googled “How NOT to carry your purse,” and is scrolling down at all the pictures of Taylor.

      • DuBey2

I respectfully disagree. It IS a handbag, after all, & one is therefore allowed to hold it by the hand. What Taylor does is a limp wrist dangle that we all wait, agonizingly, to see if the bag will slide all the way off to the dirty (ew, Ickky stuff on my bag!!) street.

        • Anna

I agree, she is carrying it correctly. I was joking that she looked up the Taylor swift purse hold and is using at as an example of how NOT to carry a purse.

          • DuBey2

Ahhh, now I get it. I misread it. sorry.

            • Anna

              No worries :)

      • BLauDGaspode

Caught my six year old carrying a purse a la Taylor. It made me cackle as I then watched her figure out it didn’t work! Taylor is obviously not smarter than a first grader.

    • Sarah

Yes, nay to the bag. Those shoes should be serving me Stylish Nurse but I sorta like them. Go figure.

      • smayper

I’m intrigued by them. Would like to find something in that general vein for myself for fall. Not white of course.

    • MilaXX

Dislike the bag with. It needs to be white or tan or even a funky color that better coordinates with the rest of the look. The black scream “winter” while the rest of the look is still Summer.

    • Constant Reader

Agreed on the black handbag — it belongs with an entirely different (and darker) outfit. The rest is cute, and I’m also giving Kate points for checking her phone like a real person with a real life and a real sister texting her poop jokes. (Mine does; doesn’t everyone’s?)

    • Mrs. Julien

Question: Do they get to keep the shoes or purses they display for the designers? Are they remunerated in some way? I assume they give the clothing back. Can someone tell me?

      • stellavision

Of course they’re remunerated in *some* way — no other way to explain how those bags are always carefully turned with the label posed for the camera like an ANTM contestant. What that way is, I’m not sure — probably some combination of getting to keep the swag and cold, hard cash.

    • hughman

It’s all kinds of Susan Dey in “The Partridge Family”. Come on, get happy!

      • smayper

Wouldn’t it be fun to see her do Susan Dey in the LA Law years?

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

So ready for the return of the pendant!

      • BLauDGaspode

Me too! Especially now that all my kids are old enough to not choke me with it.

    • uprightcitizen

Those shoes with that dress is kinda Streisand in “On a Clear Day.” Which is cool, but the purse has got to go.

    • teensmom99

Ali McGraw would have had a big straw hat, too.

    • DuBey2

Hate the bag with this. Love the idea of the bigger sunglasses as you uncles suggest.

    • marlie

Overall, I like this outfit a lot, and it’s a chic little casual summer look. Funny thing is, the bag is the only thing that I like by itself, but it all mostly works together. (even if the bag is a little dark)

    • boweryboy

If I were a woman this is how I would dress. Except I would have a giant ‘fro à la Solange, some hoop earrings, maybe a giant ring on one hand and couple of bangles on the other arm, and a cool slouchy straw bag filled with fabulous essentials. I would be so cute.

      • Thomas

Shades or bitch face? Or bitch face with shades on? These are important questions.

        • boweryboy

Shades for sure – ginormous round white ones. I’m too nice to successfully pull off a bitch face. I just look constipated.

    • barbarienne

Agreed the bag doesn’t go with the outfit, but I would ditch the outfit and keep the bag.

Of course, I have long been a Coach addict. This may be coloring my perception.

    • Imasewsure

We could give her the benefit of a doubt and assume it’s her actual
purse and she uses it with everything. I find that a difficult concept
to grasp in HollywoodFreeStuffLand but it’s possible anyway… and love
the dress…mildly dislike the shoes (but it might be the bag)

    • flamingoNW

Those shoes are bizarre. At first glance I thought she had a bandage on her foot

    • kimmeister

Her head reminds me of Falcor from the Neverending Story. [/superrandomreference]

    • Yoshio

To really hit the Seventies vibe the pendant should be an owl.

      • The Versatile Chef

Add a mood ring and I’m in.

    • Jangle57

The bag is all sorts of wrong with the rest of the outfit and I would prefer a hat to what looks like hair that needs to be washed but perhaps I’m being fussy today….

    • SewingSiren

I love , love, love the low comfortable walking shoes with the short cute dress. The bag looks a little heavy for the season. Otherwise a okay.

    • KT

Yeahhh nothing quite goes together here, even though I agree there’s a lot of cute stuff on display. What is the antithesis of the phrase, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts?” Because that’s what I want to say about this, but it’s Monday and my brain wasn’t available for comment.

    • bingo

      I love the tangerine color!

    • ktr33

Bag is completely off. But I like the dress and sort of the shoes. It’s mostly working, if not WERQing.

    • RoseJB

I should hate those shoes, but I don’t.

    • Coco Chanel

This is dying for a brightly colored bag. But the shoes. No just no

    • SoAnnaPropriate

      Those shoes crush my sole.

      • CatLady

        So hideous D:

    • gitchygitchymama

Kind of over this yellow trend. that’s a cute look that could be divine in something other than burnt urine. In fact that shade makes one look like you’re wearing white hose. Yellow is not a pasty white girls friend. Mkkay?

    • frannyprof

      meh

    • spirit52

      Ugly handbag, even uglier shoes

    • Mothra

I like it. Not everyone can wear a yellow/orange/mango but you should be required to do so if you can. Also, you can totally tell there’s stuff in that bag. Someone needs to draw a red circle around the part where it is clearly cutting into her arm flesh and send it to Taylor Swift’s people, I even like those little shoes although I immediately thought that Robin Wright could stand to wear a more interesting shoe like that. Maybe not that putty color but something…

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That outfit cries out for a shoulder bag.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

I seriously had no idea Coach was still relevant to anyone in Hollywood.

    • scoobysnacks

I’m probably the only person who cares about this, but I feel like someone needs to hold her down and put something on her lips. It’s like she doesn’t have a mouth or that she was making out with a vampire before going out, and you can argue that’s a style choice, but it’s one I loathe. She looks better as a redhead with some volume in her hair and color on her face. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

    • Ali2044

Sometimes when the bag doesn’t go, I just think, maybe that is her actual bag? Like you know, normal people don’t have a million matching handbags they coordinate with every outfit and transfer all their shit between every time they change clothes. Maybe not all celebrities are pimping labels every time they step into the street, maybe some of them just go out to do stuff and throw a bunch of stuff on without thinking about it too much, like us normies do?

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

the pendant hasn’t gone away for those of us who are slaves to Madewell.

    • J. Preposterice

jfc i’d commit murder for those shoes
