Karen Gillan for InStyle UK Magazine

Posted on August 07, 2014

Wow, InStyle UK found the one girl who can make those Moschino McDonald’s pieces actually look fun and chic. We shouldn’t be surprised that it’s the former Amy Pond. We’ve been loving every minute of this gal’s expansion onto the international fame scene. She’s really blossomed under the spotlights and she’s managed the trick of nailing the style end of things almost immediately. Compare her to someone like, say, Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery, who took a much longer time to get used to wearing high end fashion and posing for pictures.

There is not one look here we’d call easy to pull off – and she nailed every one of them. Get this girl a contract for Chanel or Prada. Moschino should be backing up trucks of money in front of her house any day.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn the owl dress came from her personal closet. She’s killing this entire shoot.

      • Freynika

That dress looks like my daughters’ beadspreads.

      • marlie

If it’s not, they need to give it to her because no one else is going to wear the hell out of it like she is.

      • MilaXX

Yep. it reminds me of the thrifted dress she wore on Craig Fergusen.

    • Zeee

She looks like a cross between Twiggy and Judy Carne. Yes I’m ancient.

      • alyce1213

Yes. Twiggy and Judy Carne is spot on.

      • evave2

Thank you, Zee. Twiggy was a hero of my youth. And I think it’s the hair that gives a Judy Carne vibe more than anything else.

      • PurpleHaze

She did play Jean Shrimpton in a film about her and David Bailey (?) in New York.

      • Lisalady161

Oh, nailed it! I totally forgot about Judy Carne. She was awesome. And didn’t young Karen here get her start in modeling? Just asking because she’s so good at it.

    • Dino Bonačić

She’s born to be a 21st century Twiggy. Something Carey Mulligan tried – but somehow never got to…

    • Myra Amler

She is working those clothes far better than the models. Would have liked to see the Chanel coat on her.

      • smayper

Agreed! Especially the blond model with the expression of utter misery/disdain.

    • Anita Karenin

Did we see the owl dress on Keira Knightley recently?

      • Tanagra

Yep. I think the prerequisite to wearing that dress is you must be elfin and English.

        • Eclectic Mayhem

Or British, since Ms. Gillan is a Scot and being called English would probably make her flinch.

    • lbl

      I must be missing something.

The first shot’s nice. Fourth and fifth are alright. We won’t discuss the other two.

      • minnye

#2&3 struck me as outtakes, too. I like the first & last ones quite a bit.

      • deelup

        Karen Gillan real doll.

    • Thomas

That Dolce & Gabbana is twee beyond words. I love that Prada coat though. And I still hate Jeremy Scott’s collection for Moschino, even on her.

      • FibonacciSequins

That owl dress belongs on a four year old.

        • Thomas

It looks like they were inspired by Angry Birds lol

    • alyce1213

Looks like they Twiggy’d her up a bit for this. Groovy bird.

    • Kathy

Idk. In every shot where she’s looking into the camera, she looks shocked. In absolutely every shot, her mouth is open. She IS the one to wear these clothes, but would it kill her to have an expression–other than shocked, that is.

      • Lower L

What is *with* the common insistence on open mouths?

        • Kathy

I guess it’s supposed to look sexy. It certainly doesn’t look particularly intelligent. Are the two mutually exclusive?

          • Lori

No, they aren’t. Do a lot of magazines apparently think they are? Sadly, yes.

          • lundibleu

I suspect the photographer/editor was wanting the “sexy but slightly vacant” look – it’s depressing, why can’t we just see people with their personality shining through.

            • Kathy

That’s one of the reasons I enjoyed Zoolander so much: Poking fun at all that silly stuff.

            • lundibleu

Yup, exactly. And I’m sure I’ve seen Karen poking fun at it too, so there may well be a bit of tongue in cheek posing from her.

        • Bridget Smith

It’s not a tricky expression to pull off or to hold, and it puts some tension in your facial muscles without doing weird things to the way your face looks. A smile can look cheesy (though I think Karen could’ve easily pulled one off here), a pout can look silly if you don’t know what you’re doing, and a non-expression just makes you look blank. It’s entirely possible she did make other facial expressions in this shoot but they all looked terrible.

    • fromanotherplanet

I found her acting cringe-worthy on Dr. Who. She must have a good agent. Good for her.

      • jtabz

I’m relieved I’m not the only one. I don’t begrudge her the success, but I don’t really get the (admittedly widespread) Amy Pond love.

These pictures, however, are pretty great.

    • ChiKat67

It helps (tremendously) that she is actually built like a model.

    • http://instagram.com/nevareese International Model

Ah yes. InStyle, United Jungle edition.

Being an typo-asshole, she makes me want to dye my hair red again…

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

HAIR INSPO. Also I want all the clothes, unsurprisingly. I like it loud and hard to wear.

    • fursa_saida

I am loving these (though I think more variation in expression would be nice–I could have gone for a saucy wink in the last one), but mostly I just want to say that she was GREAT in Guardians of the Galaxy. She didn’t have tons to do (though reportedly she’ll be in the sequel as well), but she was suuuuper convincing as a completely different character than any I’ve seen her do before. And her American accent was surprisingly good!

She also looked amazing in her costume and makeup/prosthetics.

      • AlisonHendryx

Interesting to note, because its TERRIBLE in the previews of that show she’s doing with John Chu. Which will be canceled so fast you won’t see it unless you google the trailer. Poor John Chu. He deserves better.

        • fursa_saida

John Cho deserves THE BEST OF EVERYTHING. Alas.

      • sweetestsith

On the flip side, her presence took me out of the movie every time she was on screen. I could not buy her at all, or take her character seriously. The costume looked lovely on her, but I didn’t find her even remotely intimidating/threatening/bad/etc. I honestly don’t know why. It just did *not* work for me.

        • BarniClaw

I felt the same way! I thought she was the weakest link in Guardians of the Galaxy. Not sure I can put my finger on it either…

          • sweetestsith

I’m relived to hear that at least one other person on the planet feels that way! I thought I was going to get shanked for expressing that opinion after the movie. lol

        • fursa_saida

Welp, I dunno what to say. Different strokes, I guess.

          • sweetestsith

Some people felt the same way about Zoe Saldana, so its probably just a matter of perspective/baggage/etc.

    • Daisy Walker

That first look is straight up Ronald McDonald realness. A red head wearing the Golden Arches–really?!?!

    • Bridget212323

She looks so much better in those looks than the runway models. Quirky ladies for quirky clothes.

    • hughman

“But how do you thank someone
Who has taken you from crayons to perfume?”

      • Kathy

“It isn’t easy, but I’ll try.”

      • The Versatile Chef

        THANK YOU

      • decormaven

        Total Lulu. Thanks!

    • lundibleu

It isn’t any great surprise that she’s better at this than people like Michelle Dockery, she had done modelling before, rather than being an actress that was then asked to model. It probably helps that she’s near 6′ tall, so a lot closer to model proportions than some other actresses.

I wish they’d played a bit more with the hair styling, and that they didn’t just pick shots with similar facial expressions, but she’s pulling the outfits off. I particularly like that Prada coat.

    • luluransom

      Killing it.

    • marlie

I’m still not a fan of the Moschino look, but I love, love, love her in the D&G and the LV looks. I also like the Prada. The Chanel isn’t doing anything for me.

      • kimmeister

The Moschino would be easier to swallow (*rimshot*) without the backpack.

    • whaddami

she looks fabulous, really knocked this out of the park — but my 2 year old wants his owl-themed crib blanket back, please…..

    • PinkyK

She is just plain adorable! I <3 her!

    • clatie

love those trainers. she looks cute as a button!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

You know that in reality there is no way that a grown woman should be able to make a dress with owl appliques work, but Gillian’s done it. My hat is off to her.

      • SoAnnaPropriate

As I said in my own comment, I’m willing to try!

    • stubbornthoughts

She looks amazing in all of these pieces. I just wish there was something more to her eyes than the usual doe-eyed, dead inside, whaaaat? thing.

    • MilaXX

I think her quirky personality goes a long way in making this work. LOVE the haircut I wish she would keep it.

    • AlisonHendryx

She’s making such funny faces though. Like she’s doing a bad imitation of Twiggy.

    • dash1211

She’s absolutely adorable–and I’ll bet she owns a mirror (see Vanessa Hudgens post).

    • JauntyJohn

omg it’s almost like… in that last shot… Ginger Farrow!

    • quiltrx

She’s pretty good at posing, but more varied facial expressions would be nice

    • SoAnnaPropriate

I desperately want that owl dress and I would GIVE NO FUCK about how it looks on me!

    • quitasarah

Did she do any modeling before getting into acting? Because she knows how to shape her body to show off the clothes. I would prefer some variety in the facial expressions, but I suspect that’s in the editing more than the modeling.

    • Slade Thunderdragon

I’m still waiting for Miley Cyrus to wear these Moschino pieces. They were MADE for her. But Karen rocked that top photo no doubt.

    • frannyprof

Love. I would cut a bitch for that D&G dress.

    • LadyVimes

The one with the coat and the wedges? Favorite.

    • Violentcello

Love the second shot! Legs for daaaaaaaays.

    • ashtangajunkie

Love these shots and her very cute short hair.

    • drdirection

She has one face…deer in the headlights with semi-duck lips.

    • Pterodactyl111

Nope, that McDonald’s stuff still looks ridiculous. Rest of it is great, though.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I want to be a six-foot redhead in my next life (instead of a 5’9″ reddish-head.) I guess I can just deploy the heels and henna, but I weep for the Gillan tresses.

    • Anne At Large

I hate the repeated, quizzical, open-mouthed look, it seems dull here. But she has the perfect build and coloring for the mod cuts and obnoxious colors and prints. Keira K. gets quirky and ethereal Brit but Amy Pond has quirky mod Brit nailed.

    • flamingoNW

Dramatically better than the model in all cases. That’s some serious style chops.

    • KateNJones

      I just got

    • jorinde

They didn’t do much with the styling, right? She’s wearing almost all pieces exactly like the runway models, shoes, necklaces, headphones included. Her poses are fine, but not much creativity here overall.

    • Emily Giovanni

Apparently the Chanel shopping basket is all the rage this season!

    • decormaven

Working the clothes well; a little more variation in facial expressions, and she’s going to be the top go-to celeb for quirky couture.

    • HeisenbergHattie

Against all odds, Karen made me love every ‘look’.

    • ktr33

I don’t know who she is, but she makes all these gimmicky looks work, at least in posed photos.

    • Chuck Barthelme

She’s pulling off the looks, but she needs some help on what to do with her face. She’s got a strangely bemused expression in virtually every picture.

    • guest2visits

Not even the cutest model is going to make that Moschino/McDonalds stuff work for me. But she looks adorable in the owl dress, though an owl applique dress is probably only suitable for an adolescent crowd. I’m liking the pricey Chanel sneakers and the coats.

    • conniemd

She looks better in the Louis Vuitton and the D& G owl dress than the models.

      • Clash D

I was going to post the same thing. Amen to that.

    • boweryboy

This is ’60s Vogue Richard Avedon fabulous. Love it!

    • RescueMe23

Can’t believe I liked this.. Props to her!

    • tired_mommy

She always reminds me of Shirley Partridge.

    • StrandedFashionista

It helps that she was a professional model before she even starred in ‘Doctor Who.’ She’s had experience wearing clothes.

    • MariaCookie

as many have said, she’s working the clothes, but her expressions are terrible. LOVE the Louis Vuitton boots!

    • Bernadette

She’s channeling straight-up Bulletproof La Roux in that last pic.

    • Chartreusite

She looks STUNNING in all of these holy cow.

    • http://msavonelljrose.blogspot.com Avonell

Finally someone that made these pieces work.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Cute. But I can’t help thinking “Austin Powers would pose like this.” and it kinda ruins it for me…

    • lalahartma

      She sure is a cutie.

    • crashtestbonnie

Everyone freaked when she shaved her head for GotG but damn if it wasn’t the best thing she could’ve done! With the long hair she would be forever Amy Pond and she cut that cord with surgical precision. ;p I love her in the Moschino stuff, so much fun.

      • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

    • JynxTheCat

      close your mouth dear

    • ellisd123

      She is too cute!

    • KTBSN

      ♡ ♡ owls.

    • fananafanafophalec

how on earth did she make a giant mcdonalds M look demure?!?

    • librarygrrl64

So….50 is too old for that owl dress, right? I’d look like Ms. Frizzle, right?

    • Melanie

i love this so hard. she is absolutely adorable.
