Eva Green in Elie Saab Couture at the “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For” Premiere

Posted on August 20, 2014

Miss Eva has very simple and consistent style needs.

A beaded sheer or lace gown? Check.

Dramatic over-the-shoulder mermaid hair and heavy eye makeup? Check.

Free-swingin’ boobs? Check and check.

To be honest, we feel like this picture could have been taken at any time over the last 3 or 4 years. She’s admirably consistent with her style, but it’s to the point of being extremely restrictive with it. In fact, the only lady star we can think of who has a narrower range than her would be Angelina Jolie, but with Angie, she has the benefit of hiding behind a much plainer, less colorful and sparkly aesthetic than Eva’s. Angie goes for plain black or white looks without a lot of frippery. We won’t say it works for her all the time (because we’ve been complaining about it for years), but it’s not quite so egregiously narrow as Eva’s look, which is always sheer and beaded, rendered in jewel tones. It’s almost as if this level of  restrictive style consistency almost requires that you dial back on the more identifiable elements in order for it to work.

Put it this way: Angelina Jolie always looks like she’s wearing the same style of outfit, over and over again. Eva literally looks like she’s wearing the same outfit every time she goes out.

She looks good. We’re not claiming otherwise. But we’d love to see her get away from the femme fatale aesthetic for a while.

In that fifth shot, her regal look is withering. She’s got to be thinking: “All will bow down and love me…”

      • kmk05

Ha, I just used the word ‘regal’ too for that pic! There really isn’t anything else that comes to mind. It’s a stunning photo.

      • Aidan B

All shall love me and despair!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

We all know that Eva would have that One Ring of Power, slipped it on her finger and blasted every friggin’ Orc within 50 miles of her.

      • ccinnc

        My favorite. Profile perfection.

    • RussellH88

I think she really had a face and a look that could pull off some weird, dark, Alexander McQueen type stuff.

      • Dany

Can’t you just imagine her in some beautiful gothic designs? I could see her pulling off some extraordinary black and red combos.

        • RussellH88

          I bet she’d rock them.

She could probably pull off a lot of different looks. She has the sort of darkness to her that could make an interesting contrast with something incredibly light and ethereal, almost like a dark angel or fairy.

          • Leah Elzinga

or, imagine her turning it completely on it’s ear and showing up with light, genuinely ethereal makeup, softer hair, and some sort of floaty confection. You just KNOW she has it in her!

        • sienna elm

Have you seen Penny Dreadful yet? It’s all about the gothic aesthetic.

      • kmk05

That profile picture is just regal.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I love that profile pic-bow down, peasants, I’m Eva Green.

      • Violentcello

        Lady tux. She’d look amazing.

        • lundibleu

Yes. Pull the hair back and up, strip back the makeup, particularly round the eyes, and give her something sleek and tailored to wear. Possibly in charcoal grey with a jewel toned blouse.

          • Violentcello

She looks adorable there! She definitely needs to try out some menswear, a la Marlene Dietrich.

    • Dany

It is very restrictive, but god, that color looks SPECTACULAR on her skin. She’s one of the ONLY actresses today who reminds me of the generation of movie stars ala Garbo, Dietrich, Bacall, etc. She is stunning.

      • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

She looks amazing – and it really fits the theme this time since she IS a femme fatale in the movie. Literally I would say (not having seen it yet!)

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

That is such a gorgeous color for her, though.

    • Anna

It is predictably HER LOOK, but it’s working for me. It does seem a bit heavy for a summer movie premiere, but I don’t exactly expect her to show up in pastel florals and I love the colour on her. I like this for her.

Also, I wish (and I should be so lucky) I looked as good as Eva does free-swinging.

      • whaddami

I’m with you — this look really works for her. I love the Saab gowns she chooses….

      • fursa_saida

Seriously. Incredible rack on that woman.

        • Anna

I know! And she’s not exactly small-busted. Honestly, I’m amazed they stand up on their own like that without a bra.

    • Scimommy

I scrolled through the Eva Green tag and pretty much the only time she *didn’t* wear a transparent sparkly thing you guys subjected her to an IN OR OUT! Poor thing obviously couldn’t take the stress of it and reverted to what works.

    • MilaXX

Honestly I think the dress looks horrible on her. The hair and makeup are okay, but just okay. I have yet to see her in an outfit that I find flattering on her.

    • imperfectlaura

Something doesn’t look right. I can’t put my finger on it, but I keep looking for what’s wrong with this look which is not a good thing. I do really love jewel tones though.

      • Skippy Devereaux

Could it be that her hair style is wrong for the shape of her face? That is what looks wrong to me. Her hair is too long for a face that shape.

        • numenah

The height in the crown doesn’t flatter her forehead. But what I can’t get past is the really bad dye job–the lighter roots and the heavy, flat darkness of the rest. We see so much bad hair color on these stars. I don’ t get it! Otherwise, she owns that green.

        • Imasewsure

YES! It’s a very Morticia hairstyle… she’s gorgeous for sure but with a new style, she would be even more fab

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

I gotta say I love that green on her. Dazzling. Whatever restrictions she has imposed on herself, or her stylist has imposed, it works for her, so Brava, Miss Lady.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I love the color on her, too-it really plays off her porcelain skintone, and her eyes.

    • marlie

Elie Saab is one of my favorite designers – possibly my favorite. And yet, I want to tell Eva to STEP AWAY FROM ELIE SAAB. Just for a while. See some other designers for a bit.

      • quiltrx

I think Elie Saab is my favorite, too! But yes, mix it up a little bit. Wearing Saab to every event is kind of like us regular people wearing a prom dress every day. Save them for the super-special occasions. I’d like to see her wear something graphic and edgy, just to see how it works for her.

    • SewingSiren

She looks like an illustration by Alastair. Restrictive, yes. But intoxicatingly beautiful , none the less.

    • AlisonS

I’m wondering if I would even recognize her without that face on… let alone in some cotton.

      • SewingSiren

I think she would look a lot like Lady Diana Spencer.

      • Kent Roby

Good point; I’d love to see her street style featured, though I fear that she goes grocery shopping wearing a jewel-tone beaded sheer Elie Saab gown.

      • ccinnc

Remember the brief scene of her applying makeup in her robe in ‘Casino Royale’? She was beautiful and fresh-faced. And the shot of her at the helm on the sailboat in Venice, wearing sunglasses and her gorgeous smile. The heavy eye makeup is so unnecessary.

    • Kitten Mittons

The dress is very pretty, if boring and a little standard. It suits her, which is probably why she wears this stuff over and over again.

My quibble is the head. I never like her makeup and hair. She wears too much stuff on her lower lashes, and it always looks like her makeup is running. The hair is underwhelming. She’s so pretty, but the makeup and hair just take it all down a notch for me.

      • Kathy

She’s one of those celebs who, if tweaked a bit in the makeup and hair department, would be perfection. I’m always hoping she’ll at least ease up on the lower eye makeup, but she seems to really like that look.

        • Kitten Mittons

Agreed 110%. I really don’t think the straight on shots are very flattering. When you see her profile, she’s truly gasp-worthy. Something doesn’t translate, and all I can come with are the hair and makeup. I’d kill to see her with some softer makeup and hair.

          • kimmeister

One difference is that in the closeup profile pic, her head is slightly tilted back. In all the other pictures, it’s tilted forward in a smoldering femme fatale gaze, which just emphasizes her forehead and heavy-liddedness.

            • Kitten Mittons

Yes! And you also lose the arch in her brows, so they look more straight across.

        • evave2

Yeah I think it’s the hair and make-up. The dress is fine. Elie Saab is always fine. God I love Elie Saab. The hair and make-up make her look like she’s from the ’50’s (remember all those teen movies in the ’50’s where all the actors looked like they were 40 even though we all KNEW they were really teens, it is always jarring to see one of those movies, KNOW they are really teens but they look so MATURE). I know she is beautiful (Casino Royale) but she looks older than she is. (That Julia Louis-Dreyfus shot earlier this week had the same make-up issue; SHE looked tired and it aged her.) So her personal look is what makes the look ‘tired.’

          • Kathy

I know exactly what you’re talking about. As for Eva, I googled some images of her, and there are a few without the heavy makeup. She’s stunning and younger looking without it. I admire the drama of her, but a little less would be more IMO.

          • demidaemon

Agreed. Saab’s dresses are always beautiful, so it’s the styling that matters, and she mucked up the styling.

      • kmk05

I think the problem is in her eye-shape: she doesn’t have a lot of eyelid space (from her upper lid to her brow) so hr MUA can’t really ‘smoke that out’ too much and they end up overdoing it on the lower lashline.

        • whaddami

yeah, she clearly really likes that look though. She’s going to need to go lighter as she ages — speaking from personal experience!

      • Janet B

She has so much underwhelming hair. The side part works, but it’s so long and looks a bit unpolished.

        • Kitten Mittons

Yes, unpolished. I want her in huge curls, or a dramatic up ‘do. Just SOMETHING else.

      • Violentcello

I just typed the exact same thing about her makeup and thought I’d scroll down a little to see if someone beat me too it. She always looks like she’s cried most of her makeup off. I don’t know what she’s so sad about. She’s obviously a babe.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Too. Much. Hair. But the dress is lovely on her.

    • Karen Belgrad

Are they making another Batman movie? Is she auditioning for Poison Ivy?

      • Constant Reader

Thank you. i thought I was the only one who saw a creeping vine or fungus.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Lace AND sheer AND sparkle is too much for me. Could’ve done with something dramatic in an ear-cuff.

      • decormaven

Definitely some statement earrings. She has a broad forehead; with the expanse of fair skin against dark hair, some gold earrings would smoothe the transition.

    • Alyssa_T_Robot

her range is limited but she’s sooooo good at it! how i’d love to work the dark femme fatale vibe with such precision! in short, love huh.

    • MartyBellerMask

“A beaded sheer or lace gown? Check.

Dramatic over-the-shoulder mermaid hair and heavy eye makeup? Check.

      Free-swingin’ boobs? Check and check.”

      Underwear? D’OH!!!

      • Kathy

It’s like a Clairol commercial: Does she or doesn’t she?

    • almondemy

I totally agree with you…except for the poledance for this particular movie. Her character epitomizes the femme fatale. Now, it’s true that she seems to *always* angle for that character, but this time, I think it’s an on-point aesthetic choice, especially the green, which is one of the few colors assigned to her character in an otherwise b+w movie (no spoilers, it was in the trailer!).

      • RussellH88

Considering the heightened tone of the film, I’d wish she’d get some broad shoulder, Lauren Bacall in the Big Sleep style looks.

        • almondemy

OMGYES. I take back everything I said. I want updated DYNASTY and 1940s noir MELODRAMA. (Sorry, some words just need to be typed in all-caps.)

    • Kim Elmore

LOVE the color (& sparkle of course) but what the fuck with that sheer? Is it cut out? I mean, are those her legs showing thru? Bc other areas (vag & crack, eg) I see green lining???

      • MilaXX

        It’s a nude lining

      • Kent Roby

It looks like there could be multiple layers of the green sheer to increase the opaqueness in certain areas, which would also help ease the transition to the more-sheer areas less abruptly.

    • holla

I think like Angie, she should stick with the narrow style range. For her, it’s jewel toned colors, striking eyes and lips, old school glam hair. Just stop with the sheers and sparkles.

    • Daisy Walker

Hate the hair, but everything else looks great. And at least she wears color, wish Angie would too.

    • ashtangajunkie

Meh on the dress, HATE the hair and makeup. Neither is doing her lovely face justice.

    • Heather

My mother taught me many things, including but not limited to the value of good undergarments, invisible under clothing.

    • Sophie

I don’t really like the way her hair is styled, but I have poor memory and I love the close-up of her profile, so all is pardoned. (But yes, I’d like to see a non-beaded dress sometime.)

    • Grumpy Girl

Her hair is just disappointing me here. It’s so much darker than her eyebrows, and the eye makeup is too. I want to brush that hair and put it in a soft updo and just make it look less harsh and rough. As is, the outfit says glam, and the hair says motorcycle.

      • yllas

Isn’t she a natural blonde who darkens her hair for impact? I think that’s it. I think she is SPECTACULAR, the gown I would kill for, yes, I would kill for that gown, it is everything I covet in a sparkly gown….Mr. Yllas has a major crush on Eva, and I kinda share it. She is gorgeous.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Honestly, your link to the “Eva Green” tag isn’t consistent with your complaint. The thumbnails show 3 or 4 different hairstyles (including an updo and a straight back-comb), and some variety in the dresses (a heavy Tom Ford, a ruffled DSquared). A Google image search on “Eva Green red carpet” brings up a reasonable array, including a weird green caftain, a structured, colorful Dior, and so on, as well as the beaded sheer numbers. I think she often gets it wrong, but I’m not sure she’s as samey as you think.

    • RoseJB

Her arm freckles are so lovely.

      • jilly_d

Yes, this. As a similarly bespeckled lady, I am happy to see this physical quality in a celeb, when most of them look like they have Barbie skin.

    • enchanted216

This dress is to DIE FOR! I covet! It’s difficult to make this dress look bad, but I do believe it should be lined. Is it?

      • conniemd

It looks like it is lined in the model’s picture. OTOH, Eva’s dress looks unlined. It’s hard to tell. I was pondering that question myself. It is a gorgeous dress, but Elie Saab does gorgeous dresses.

    • kmk05

Her face and bearing is just spectacular. Also, yes, her boobs are free-swinging. But what a swing! Those profile and three-quarter pics are to die for.

I do wish she’d move away from the more classic Elie Saab: nothing wring with liking a designer, but it would be nice for her to veer towards his more youthful creations (like that ombre non-beaded dress from last season. Mm!)

    • papillon

Well, that shade of green is just spectacular.

    • FibonacciSequins

I’d settle for the dress being rendered in a different fabric. That lace looks so itchy-scratchy.

    • MoHub

Add to “free-swinging boobs” the phrase: “with side view.”

    • BLauDGaspode

Her eye makeup always has me questioning if she’s crying/her eyes are melting. The lower liner is so dark and heavy that it puts me in mind of a basset hound, newfoundland, or other sad, droopy eyed dog.

    • BlairBear

With all the fug that gets put on a red carpet I have absolutely no problem with her constantly coming out in pretty jewel tone beaded gowns. I can understand why it would get boring for you guys to cover but she looks pretty and polished. I hate the hair though

    • Roberta Johnson

As the voice of her mother, she will someday regret not wearing a bra occasionally.

    • jonnyf8

      Of course!

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Considering the size of her “boobage” it works! I’d like a little less forehead…maybe the hair swept down across brow on one side? Just a thought.

    • Libster

I’d like to see her with side-swept bangs.

    • Emily Wilson

LOVE the train and the back. The balance of the sheer and lace isn’t doing it for me. The excessive sheer almost makes her skin look sickly. I would love to see this is in a purple on her.

      • Ali2044

The colour of her seance dress in Penny Dreadful is the exact colour purple she needs to wear all the time. Made her skin look incredibly.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Someone PLEASE get her into a YSL suit.

    • SistaT

Hollywood’s aversion to bras is alarming. Maybe it’s just because I’ve been “bountifully blessed”, but there’s no way in the world that I think the majority of these braless wonders should be running around without benefit of underwire.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Well, at least she’s in green now to fit her name, which makes a certain amount of sense. Branding and all.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

      That green is Her Color.

    • frannyprof

Do not like. The hair color is awful, and I never like her heavy eye makeup. She needs some sort of jewelry (nothing flashy, god forbid), and her girls need some serious hoiking up.

    • Imasewsure

I really don’t like long hair on her… wish she’d go for a dramatic short ‘do… I guess I want her to Cotillard herself…is that wrong?

    • ksb43

She’s…French. I would die to look like her on a bad day.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

There is a subset of women I know and see in the media who like to put very little makeup on their upper-lid and then line the shit out of the lower-lid. Can someone explain this to me? I don’t understand the appeal of a look that emphasizes bags under the eyes and otherwise drags the entire shape of the eye down into droopy territory.
Eva Green has a lovely face, but she doesn’t need that much emphasis on her lower lashes. If I were her makeup artist I’d probably curl her upper lashes more to open her eyes up more to the light and get the color to stand out more – I imagine the dark lower lid is expected have the same effect but it always just looks dark and heavy to me.

    • crash1212

The hair has got to go. If ever a dress for real life was crying out to be lined, this would be it.

    • Jessica

      I lover her!!

    • ShaoLinKitten

I have a total girlcrush on her. She’s gorgeous and a fantastic actress. I think she looks good here. My only complaint is the hair. If she’d done something, anything, with it, this outfit would be much improve.

    • Columbinia

It’s a naked dress — and more naked than dressed. She might be a sartorial one-trick pony, but that’s an impressive trick. Shoes? Accessories? Who cares?

    • demidaemon

Such a pretty dress, styled lamely. :(

    • SophieCollier

That gown ain’t much from the front, but from the back: wow!

    • Sherilyne Cox

Her free-swinging green orbs perfectly match the sparkling green orbs on either side of her nose.

    • E. D.

She needs to try something else with her hair. The extreme side part isn’t doing her any favors.

    • GemFemme

She’s got an extremely large forehead. If she softened up the hair in that area a bit she’d look much better.

    • Fraggle

My crush… I just love her. I love the color on her. Yeah, her hair… but really? She’s so beautiful, I’m very forgiving with her.

Is it allowed to post links? I don’t know… so please please please… google her in the Dior dress Cannes 2007. Granted… it’s a few years old but God is she stunning! Love her! Classy lady with a beautiful voice. (yeah… I know… she’s my crush. What can I say? It’s embarassing)

    • kategs

It just looks so good on her, I cannot argue.

    • Man Dala

The colour of her dress is an exact match of the colour of her eyes. She looks stunning in my humble opinion.

    • StrandedFashionista

Personally I’d love to see her in some monastic Haider Ackerman or Gareth Pugh. There would be some MAJOR sci-fi realness going on in that case.

    • EEKstl

      I know, I know, you’re right, but it just…works.

    • Melanie

LOL @ free swingin boobs. with that being said, i think she has beautiful, perfectly-shaped breasts & bras are uncomfortable anyways!

    • CommentsByKatie

Love her. Love this. Ugh. So fabulous. I don’t care if it’s always the same I guess :D

    • musi_

yeah i thought the same thing – i feel like i’ve seen her wearing this before? her style should be called ‘deja vu’
      but all hail elie saab!

    • Michelle Lim

Girl’s got a killer profile. Who can fault her for working it.

    • Mousentrude

She’s on my irrational hate list – I could never see why James Bond fell for her.

    • https://plus.google.com/+FrankLithiumz/posts Frank Lithium

She is a gorgeous woman who no questionably likes to keep her skin pale, but it just constantly looks a shade of sallow by whomever is doing her make-up.
