Hard to make this look like it’s not a robe. Solid try, though.

    • Kent Roby

The unpolished hair and makeup certainly make this dress look more robe-like.

      • Raspberry2012

Yes, that’s the big problem with it. I think if she’d done pulled back style (a sleek ponytail or chignon), the dress itself would have looked less bathrobish.

        • teensmom99

What’s the matter with lipstick, ladies?

        • MissAmynae

and kept the original belt. The one she’s wearing looks like a David’s Bridal sash.

    • Dino Bonačić

DISCO REALNESS backstage robe. Like she’s hiding a glittery sassy frock underneath!

      • YoungSally

Dance Fever with Denny Terio and Motion

        • Raspberry2012

          My people!

  • Twigg

Did she attend the award show in between her facial and massage?

    • higgledypiggledy

No matter what anyone else might write, you won this thread.

    • Trent

** still cackling ** As my Nana used to say, if you can’t say anything nice about someone, come sit by me… : D

  • Sarah

She accessorized the shit outta that bathrobe.

  • higgledypiggledy

It’s a bathrobe and the shoes (what I can see of them) are bad. Why don’t I hate this? I should hate this.

    • Sarah

Because, she looks better in the robe than Lena Dunham has ever looked in her LIFE.

      • higgledypiggledy

True, that. There’s star power here that even a bathrobe can’t cover up. Her hair is pretty fierce. And I am deeply grateful she’s not doing the Jolie pose, with her leg out, like the model.

        • Sarah

I am living for her hair. It is MAGNIFICENT.

          • Kent Roby

I love the hair, but not with this dress.

          • Sarah

Aw. What would you rather see? Curious.

          • Kent Roby

I’d love to see sleeker hair and a dark red lip to make the dress look less casual ; this is one of those looks that can skew so differently according to the styling.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I’d say you don’t hate this because it’s Angela Bassett wearing this, with that hair, and that is enough.

          • Melissa Brogan

It’s Angela Bassett wearing this period, inexplicably enough. By all rights, I should hate this. Hardly anyone else could make that bathrobe look so good.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s one of Angela’s special powers;she gives off that vibe of not caring a whit if others don’t agree with her, too, that makes me not hate it.

      • demidaemon

It’s definitely got some Diana Ross magic going on somehow.

    • Introspective

      because angela bassett.

    • lunchcoma

She’s werqing the hell out of all of it. The teen stars at the VMAs could look to her and take a few notes.

      • whaddami

Agreed — she looks amazing. And I love the hell out of the belt she chose — big improvement over the waist chain.

      • MM4321

YES. She is Angela Freaking Bassett and she makes this look WERQ.

    • MaryMcClelland

I know! I feel in my bones I should despise this but instead I went OOOOH! It’s cause it’s so thematic and dramatic and costume-y and deep down we all love a diva doing what a diva does. Except the hair and [non?] makeup need to go.

  • imperfectlaura

    Dynasty-inspired robe.

    • Dorothy & Michael n/a

      YES – this!

  • Kitten Mittons

    My kingdom for a turban….

    • Anna

  • Dany

    Terrible makeup. Just terrible.

    • Chattygal

Yes, I don’t think I’ve ever been so put off by her face. She’s usually face-gorgeous. I hope it’s just makeup and not any work 🙁

      • Sunnykm

It’s too much Botox in the forehead giving her brows the over done look and filler in her cheeks and nasal labial fold that is giving her the puffy look.

        • Yes, she looks a little bit like she had some rejuvenating work done that hasn’t completely settled.

      • kimmeister

She looks like she can’t even close her mouth comfortably.

    • Grumpy Girl

Thank you. I was wondering if it was me, because she just doesn’t look fabulous like usual. Otherwise I would have been thinking Diana Ross, between the dress and the hair.

  • prettyinmink

Love her. Love the jewelry. Hate the dress.

  • TAGinMO

“Damn right it’s a bathrobe! Now just go ahead and tell me I don’t look fabulous, peasants.” -Angela Bassett

  • HeisenbergHattie

I want to look this elegant in such a casual dress. She is wearing this dress, not the other way around.

  • Alyssa

It looks comfy? I mean, it is basically a robe, so it should be.

  • gloriana232

Huh. I really like this! Surprise.

  • MilaXX

I like it. It’s simple but I think it works for her.

    • Kent Roby

Me, too, though I’m needing better hair and makeup to really sell the look.

      • carrie

I just want the bottom of the dress to be a little better fitting. She is always stunning, and I love this look on her. Just needs more polish.

  • H2

Definitely bathrobe. I also hate the shoes and the belt looks to me like she forgot the belt that goes with it at home and had to grab a new one at the last minute.

    • Kent Roby

In my mind, she spent a few minutes bartering with a sales person, finally getting a few bucks knocked off the price by not taking the belt that came with the dress (AS IF she doesn’t have free clothes thrown at her, and the money to buy the full outfit).

  • Gatto Nero

  • ailujailuj

wrong belt and a few other things. But I love that look on her with the hair.

  • Betsy

I’m distracted by the extra hand.

    • Introspective

probably her hubby’s hand but yes, weird nonetheless.

(by the way love him too – courtney vance from law & order, and a great guest on this season’s masters of sex. he’s compelling in every role)

      • DuBey2

thanks for info. I was wondering who her +1 was when I saw that hand.

      • demidaemon

He was amazing on L & O: CI. I never understood why they got rid of his character. He also played the unfortunately short-lived Chief of Police at the end of The Closer, where he was also great.

    • mlle

I wondered at first why only one of her hands had polish.

  • desertsweetpea

What the holy hell is going on with the model/mannequin up there?

  • hughman

I’m most curious about the story behind the belt and how that came about. I like the belt she is wearing but why would you switch out the one on the dress that matches the sleeve detail? How many meetings and terse texts were sent about what camed to be known as BELT SITCHUATION 14?

    • TAGinMO

I think the belt Angela is wearing is a huge improvement, actually. Although it does match the sleeve detail, the belt from the look book just kind of sits there like a large, misplaced brooch. And because the gold isn’t continuous it makes the dress look even more bathrobe-ish than it does on Angela. A belt that matched the sleeve detail all the way around her waist would probably have been best, but if that wasn’t possible, she made the right choice here.

  • KinoEye

Don’t even care it looks like a bathrobe. The HAIR. The FACE. The POISE.

    • Anna

Right?! HER FACE in that photo next to the model: I found myself about to kneel before my computer screen before I realized where I was.

    • lamamu

It all adds up to one big WOW!

    • BayTampaBay

  • GillianHolroyd

I like it, she’s treading that fine line between chic and sloppy. It would’ve been easier with the original belt though.

I do wonder if she feels hot (as in temperature) with those long sleeves. Big auditorium, television lights, all those people. I’m sweating just thinking about it.

  • ashtangajunkie

Few can do “spa day chic” quite so well.

  • clatie

I LOVE the dress. She’s so beautiful and has such a gorgeous complexion (if you have ever seen her in person, it’s luminous!), I’m wondering if this is just a bad set of pictures? I think so highly of her, I’m inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt.

  • I thought she looked amazeballs and it really suits her.

  • Frankie Carter

She pulls it off. I could totally see Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women wearing this in a 1987 episode, though.

That being said, your lace front closure needs to go, Angie. Love the hair itself but whoever installed that weave needs to be fired.

  • Djwilke

The drape and folds on the model keep it from being too bathrobe-y. Also, too much gold.

  • papillon

She looks like a goddess. I approve. And I prefer the belt she used.

    • Garcia Loca

      She IS a goddess.

  • Laura Livingston

Wonder Woman caught outside in her robe.

  • Tigger

Someone mentioned below and I agree, I was surprised when I first saw her face. I have no idea if she has had work done or not. I was immediately drawn to her brow and eyes that look completely different. There is something a bit Jocelyn Wildenstein about the whole thing.

  • Her hair is giving me life.

  • SewingSiren

    Oh mighty Isis realness.

  • Abbey Rogue

Yeep. I’m pretty sure Michelle Pfieffer in 1982 is the only person allowed to wear this in public.

  • LilyVanessi

She looks great, but why did she switch out the belt?

  • Beto

When the 70s made a reappearance?

  • deelup

Somehow she looks like Renee Zellweger and Oprah had a baby.

  • KendraMR

I like the look, but I’m too distracted by her face 🙁 It looks like she did some unnecessary pre-Emmys work because her face was looking lovely and natural a month ago.

    • bringbackbeatles

I thought it was just me. Something just looked wrong to me and I didn’t know if it was botox or what. It is totally unnecessary too bc she looks beautiful, in fact more beautiful, without it.

  • Akemi

I feel like this could have worked better for her if she’d done something different with her hair.

  • Nita

    I love a well orchestrated self-satisfied smirk

  • Melanie

Ok seriously. What is with all the flat ugly hair parted in the middle?? Why is this a style? There are at least 5 women just on the TLO page with this icky do. WTF HOLLYWOOD? The 90s have come back around, let’s not go right back to the 70s plskthx.

  • enchanted216

    Positively gorgeous! 🙂

  • Evil Edie

I know people are saying “robe” but she looks like the (Grecian/Egyptian/Roman) goddess of fierce.
    Probably because of the robe.
    OK it’s a robe!
I’m making a lot of myth references today.

    • higgledypiggledy

Yep, there’s more than a little Cleopatra Halloween costume going on here.

  • FibonacciSequins

    Serving up disco queen realness.

  • kim bunchalastnames

i wonder why she decided to switch out the belt?

  • Little_Olive

Amazing from the neck down (yes, robe and all), sad from the neck up.

  • TheGrandSophy

I’d prefer it if it draped in a more gown-like way, rather than looking like a robe. And I prefer the clasp on the model rather than that belt with the brighter gold.

  • marlie

I like it, but I’m not blown away. And most of it is because of the fierceness of Angela Bassett. She needed a stronger lip color for this, and I’m not sold on the frizziness of her hair.

    • Qitkat

Ooh, I love her hair like this. Not everyone can wear such a simple robe-like gown and pull off the statuesqueness that she does. Like a regal Egyptian Queen of the Nile.

    • boweryboy

“And most of it is because of the fierceness of Angela Bassett.”

  • tired_mommy

I saw her at a kids trampoline place earlier this year and she’s stunning in person. She was having her twins birthday party there and certainly wasn’t trying to draw attention to herself. Even though she was dressed casually, she stood out in the crowd. She had short spiky hair that day which I prefer on her. Either way, she looks pretty good.

  • SugarSnap108

So yes, she can even make a bathrobe work. But I wish it were a sleeveless bathrobe, because I love it when she breaks out the guns.

  • stonecoldcuddlewhore

I think she looks cool as f*ck and way more original and interesting than most of the ladies on the carpet.

  • The belt looks cheap. I understand the impetus to switch out the chain and fabric belt to make it look less like a robe, but she should have gone with a textured leather.

  • a_liking

come on, all you bitches. this is spectacular!!! she looks amazing.

  • SistaT

I want to be her when I grow up. She is reaching goddess status alongside Iman. I will have to add her to my altar.

  • paintedfish

    disco goddess.

  • crash1212

Stone cold fox. Miss Lady is serving. I am here for it.

  • Beardslee

If that’s a bathrobe, may we all have bathrobes so beautifully cut and so flattering. She looks great, though because it’s her I am biased in her favor.

  • frannyprof

    Karate, anyone?

  • boweryboy

Not loving the hair. I think only Lucy Liu can pull off that eye make-up. And the dress looks like a bathrobe. But she’s feeling it, working it, and selling it so I’m almost convinced this looks good.

  • MaryMcClelland

Ugh – I love it! 70’s Diva realness. Diana Ross is gonna fight her for it. And I think she looks fab!

    • demidaemon

      I had a similar thought!

  • I am a Goddess. Whose hair needs a moisture treatment.

  • kategs

I think this is pretty close to perfect meself…

  • Glammie

Like the silhouette, the accessories and the jewelry. Actually, I like everything but the color. The white just isn’t working for me.

  • wontons

Something’s off for me. Is the dress too bathrobey? Is it the cat-eye makeup and the tension/tightness in her face? I guess I just want a bit more color, a bit more body shape, a bit less brittleness.

    • Big Bear

All those things. She’s radiating Glenn close Fatal Attraction craziness.

  • PinkyK

I’m torn…. In the no column – too hot for August and too Diana Ross. In the yes column – she looks great!

  • suzq

I prefer the original belt and I actually wish she was showing some leg with the slit.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

She looks like a goddess (whose wig is falling off, but otherwise fabulous).

  • formerlyAnon

This dress needed crisper, more sophisticated hair. But let’s be honest – she’s still stone cold gorgeous. At 56. And radiating ownership of her place in the universe.

  • cocohall

If there were shoulder pads to give this a little more definition and if it were made up in a different color, I think it wouldn’t feel like spa day at the Emmy Awards.

  • Pterodactyl111

    Loove the nails.

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

    This woman is a Goddess.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

White lady with 12 hairs here: Should her hair be, like, twice the size?

  • quiltrx

DIANA ROSS REALNESS. But from, like, a long time ago. You can do better than this, miss lady.

  • Ali2044

My god, this woman is perfection. I always thought she was the spitting image of that Egyptian bust of Nefertiti.

  • BLauDGaspode

I don’t know, seems a little too “Stopped at the Emmys on my way home from a spa treatment” to me. Maybe if it was a different color…?

  • MarissaLG

    DIVA! She looks phenomenal.

  • Clash D

Love her. Only Angela Bassett can turn up at the Emmys wearing a bathrobe and look so regal. She needs to be cast in a movie as a nubian queen or something like that.
