Elisabeth Moss for Gotham Magazine

Posted on August 20, 2014

As people who tend to watch and form opinions (and even write books) on how celebrities manage their lives and their image, we have to give kudos to Lizzie and her team, who have been doing a bangup job positioning her as the Mad Men cast member who’s going to really break out once the show ends. She’s doing really interesting work in other projects; work that establishes her once and for all as an actress worth watching and someone who shouldn’t be confused with her Mad Men character, which is something every other cast member of the show has good reason to worry about, especially the iconic, glamorous, magazine-cover ones:  Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks and January Jones. Sometimes, playing the plain girl can be the very best thing a talented ingenue can do for her career.

Especially since, now that Peggy Olson’s days are numbered, Lizzie’s free to go after those magazine covers herself.

This is a long way of saying that these are our very favorite pictures of her and possibly the best set of pictures she’s ever done. The clothes look great; they’re chic, but quirky in a way that suits her. And while we don’t credit her with being much of a model, she still manages to light a little fire behind the eyes when the camera’s on her. She’s still acting in every shot. We’d love to see her really tear loose for a dramatic, Vogue-style editorial set in some really photogenic location where she can get her diva on. She’s got it in her. She’s got a lot in her. That’s the point. She’s on her way.

  • Emily Giovanni

I am too distracted by the terrible hair to see the chic.

    • uprightcitizen

Same here. I can see how the pics and clothes are both cool, but the hair, makeup and lighting are giving off such an “Edward Scissorhands” vibe, it’s tough to see past it.

      • Glam Dixie

Omg, yes, that’s it. I’ve been trying to think of what that awful hair reminded me of and you nailed it. Hair by Edward Scissorhands.

        • Little_Olive

More like styling by Edward Scissorhands. And it could have been amazing.

          • evave2

Burn, girl. I kept thinking it looks like it was styled to look shaved.

That first Dior is the first Dior I’ve seen in a while that looks GREAT; I don’t think much of the Valentino OR the Burbury Prosum (sheer, weird lengths, but great color); I like the Jason Wu coat. I think her poses were ok, but the clothes aren’t really highlighted for me, just her. Isn’t it supposed to be BOTH?

      • quiltrx

I get Marilyn Manson from it, big time.
That second suit is so awesome…and almost like some things he has worn…I kind of wish they had gone for some slightly Marilyn-ish makeup. The angle is already giving her a bit of his ‘crazy eye’ anyway.

    • ballerinawithagun

      I love the hair!

      • Emily Giovanni

It is not the cut I detest, it’s the fact that it looks like it has literal dirt worked into it (and no brush for a week). It’s like post-apocalyptic hipster hair.

        • Rhonda Shore

          It’s neo-goth and it’s working for me.

          • fursa_saida

    • TwiddlyStun

I am so happy it is not literally shaved on the side (just greasily wiped back – but that can be fixed for the next photo)! I will forgive it. Looking at YOU Demi Lovato.

  • imperfectlaura

I like the experimentation with makeup in the shots. Not a big fan of the claw fingernails, but that’s my only real complaint.

  • MilaXX

I don’t care for the cover, but I love every other shot. She’s definitely on my one to watch list.

  • Noah

I die for the suit in the second picture. Flawlessly executed.

    • Frank_821

No shit. that suit is heavenly and I love her expression in it. Like she’s saying to all the gals “you covet! you are dying of jealousy that I get to wear this! I know you do”

      • Imma Mäder

        BE ME at its best

      • http://instagram.com/nevareese International Model

…she is, Frank. She really is.

    • kimmeister

I think the pants are awkwardly shaped, but they have her posed in the exact right position to make them work perfectly.

    • joything

I gasped and died for that suit, and her look in it.

    • SoAnnaPropriate

THIS. Serious suit porn. Is that even a thing?

  • SewingSiren

    Don’t call me Peggy anymore!

  • Danielle

These are all so good, but especially that second picture – holy crap! Go girl.

  • Adelaidey

I audibly gasped at that second photo. Elizabeth Moss in a well-fitting suit: what I never knew I always wanted.

  • PinkyK

  • Alyssa_T_Robot

get it, girl! <3 she looks stunning in that cover shot. werq that funky hair and those baby blues!

  • hj121

Wow, she looks fantastic. She looks better than the models in a lot of the shots.

That cover though, as Tyra would say, I NEED NECK.

    • Lorelei_D

I thought the same thing about the pic of her in the black dress, which even looks awkward on the model. Still, I love her here and the clothes, just not the goofy nails. That suit! Her eyes! Gorgeous.

  • Karen Belgrad

That cover is to die for. Best she’s ever looked!!!!!

  • PastryGoddess

Step back bitches, that Valentino suit is MINE!

    Miss Thang is looking divine

  • Kate Andrews

I LOVE that Valentino suit. Wow.

  • Firecat

I’m so happy to see a non-ugly Dior, it almost overshadows my joy at seeing a non-plain Elisabeth.

  • NMMagpie

That SUIT is EVERYTHING. She is working it to all kinds of fabulous.

  • RussellH88

That suit picture is blowing my mind.

  • Sophie

Love the Valentino suit, she looks fantastic in it, if a little pale.

  • Anna

Never would’ve expected this from her or to be able to pull off edgy, but I’m loving this editorial. Best she’s ever looked to me, more please.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    She looks gorgeous.

  • Capt. Renault

My name is Elisabeth Moss and I want to smoke your fashion editorial.

  • Dany

Hair is not cute. A little too Marilyn Manson.

Clothes, however, on point. I like her quite a bit and hope to see her do more.

    • quiltrx

I love that I’m not the only one who got MM from the hair!

  • MoHub

She reminds me of how Ruth Gordon once said that she Helen Hayes, and other character actresses not only never worried about the longevity of their careers, but they used to laugh at the “glamor girls” like Vivian Leigh, who were constantly worrying about their future marketability as they aged. Moss is a worthy successor to the sublime Ms. Gordon.

    • demidaemon

I think it’s a little funny how character actors and actresses tend to get a lot of crap, but they also tend to be more successful in the long run.

  • Kitten Mittons

    HELL. YES.

I want the best for this lady. That suit is to die for, and she’s wearing it like a pro, or better than the pro, in fact.

  • wisenhar

She needs to own that Valentino suit. She looks HOT!!!

  • Kent Roby

She is KILLING IT in that Valentino suit! Incidentally, I saw “The One That I Love” last weekend; she was terrific (as expected), and the film was really cool and quirky, in a bizarre “Being John Malkovich” sort of way.

  • Sanglots longs

She’s come a long, long way since her Excedrin ads!

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

She looks so much like my BFF did at that age, it’s scary.

  • Miss Ruth

+1 on the fierceness of the Valentino and the awfulness of the hair. Oh, and as long as no one has claimed the Jason Wu coat, it’s coming home with me, please and thank you.

  • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

My god that Valentino suit on her! She is KILLING it in that.

  • geans

Audible gasp. In a good way.

  • Scimommy

Was so happy when she won that Golden Globe for The Top of the Lake. I want her to kill it professionally and maybe even find some personal happiness while she’s at it. (Wait, am I talking about her or Peggy? Hmm.)

  • deelup

Don’t watch Mad Men, but liked her in Top of the Lake. She has such an interesting look. And here they have made that look stunning.

  • ashtangajunkie

That Jason Wu is my soul coat. I hear music. And EM looks awesome here!

  • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

Way to go, Lizzie! She looks incredible here.

  • aurumgirl

You’d never know it from the characters she portrays, but in these photos she does give you a glimpse of herself as a supermodel–her face even reminds me a bit of Linda Evangelista, and sometimes, Tatiana Patitz. Maybe she really is acting in these photos: acting like a very famous, very successful iconic model.

  • Call me Bee

Yeah–weird hair, but I die for that to-tone suit.

  • FibonacciSequins

Yes! To everything. Good editorial, good to see her looking modern. As much as I love Peggy, I’m excited to see what else Elisabeth has to show us.

  • papillon

    There’s a Gotham magazine?
I love her eyes in the cover shot. And I love, love, LOVE that black dress but it completely swallows up her neck which isn’t a good look. It’s a stunning dress though. I WANT IT. I NEED IT.

    • alyce1213

Yeah, I got a free sample last month.

  • Judy_J

I love, love, LOVE that suit she’s wearing in the first photo! She looks fabulous, and totally unlike Peggy Olson. She is definitely on her way.

  • Imma Mäder

no one confuse that girl with peggy olson!

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

    That Valentino is CRAZY GOOD.

  • jdens

    Donna Tartt chic.

  • Glam Dixie

The hair is beyond awful, otherwise I think she looks great if you can get past the do.

  • KinoEye

Oh, BRAVA, Lizzie. Serving Marlene Dietrich realness in that second shot.

    • MoHub

Absolutely Marlene. That was where my thoughts went immediately on viewing that shot.

  • SugarSnap108

That Valentino suit is killing me. In the best of ways.

  • holla

the collared dress is making her look short torsalled and wide. otherwise, great shots

    • MoHub

        • Zoe_Tropes

        • MoHub

          Possibly “torsoed.”

      • holla

    • alyce1213

IMO, that silhouette is flattering on only tall, thin, VERY young ladies. It’s not for everyone, very few, in fact.

  • RescueMe23

    That Valentino suit!!! Gimme!!

  • decormaven

Other than the need to vary the hairstyles from look to look, she is SERVING in these shots. She’s definitely on her way!

  • Zoe_Tropes

Wait, I just googled and that fantastic suit is actually the Dior Pre-Fall 2014 collection, and the black dress is Valentino. Now I’m even more shocked by how great the suit is, considering Dior’s recent track record.

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

We mislabeled the runway looks. Fixed now : )

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Am v. curious — do you have a secret magic trick to flip all the Dior-Valentino references in the comments, too? Because I could have sworn several of them made the same mistake a few hours ago, and now they all seem fixed..

  • anonylind

    She looks stunning.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

    Well done, Zoey Bartlet!

  • marlie

Lizzie looks fantastic. I love these shots of her. Definitely the best she’s done so far. Attagirl!

  • Pablo

She looks great in the Dior.

  • BlairBear

she looks a little deer in the headlights in the Valentino but she looks good in the other shots

  • Jennifer Bober

I’ve really liked her since West Wing, so I’m happy to see her breaking out this way. That suit is absolutely fantastic. I can deal with the funky hair. It’s a very NYC look and this is Gotham magazine.

  • kmk05

Why do makeup artists hate her eyebrows? I’m not saying they should be Sharpie brows, but the contrast between her dark hair colour and her too-ligth eyebrows is just too much. Or maybe it’s just the lighting.

She’s making those clothes sing, though, and the tousled hair is great.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

The Dior suit photo is so stunningly wonderful! and i love her in the Valentino. It’s a very unusual looking editorial that she rocked. you go lizzie!!

    • conniemd

Was really amazed that Dior made that suit. It’s one I’d kill for. Very, very chic and well tailored.

    • ballerinawithagun

Love the Dior suit! At first I thought it was denim, which would be great also. Such flattering lines and the red instead of a bland undercollar is genius!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

YOWZA!!! Love it! The Hair, too!

    • ballerinawithagun

I just replied below to the hair haters, I LOVE the hair, of course, I had the wild asymmetric hair back in the day, and still consider doing it again. My 29 year old step son says Yes, my husband No! Guess I’ll just do asymmetric styling for awhile.

  • jilly_d

OHMIGOD. Love all these, but that stairway shot with the Dior suit is a knockout. Go on with your bad self, Liz.

  • ChaCha_70

    Fucking fierce!

  • Andrea

I think the clothes are fab but her eyes look rather lifeless. She needs to work on her face-giving skills. Still, go EM!

  • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Her eyes grab your attention…Great pics. Valentino…guys I adore your esthetic… but PLEASE, no more friggin BABY DOLL dresses! How about some of the “glamour DNA” that Valentino was known for?

    • alyce1213

On board with you about baby doll dresses, Bert Keeter. They’re wonderful for children. I hate designs that infantilizing grown women — they undermine us and make us look desperately silly.

      • demidaemon

That photo and look is the only one that falls flat for me.

  • kimmeister

I’m on record for hating white eyeliner on the lower lid, and yet she is making it work in the shot in the Valentino. Who’d have thought?

  • LuLusLemons

    Scully realness.

  • Kristi Mitchell

I’m obsessing over those red boots the model is wearing. . . .

  • ThaliaMenninger

The clothes are perfect for her. She has really broken out since being the girl next door (when the door was on the White House) and then the Plain Jane. She’s got quirky covered in a way the wannabes can only dream of. You know, the way that says you are quirky but intelligent and interesting and this is who you are, not some game you’re playing to get looked at.

  • MaggieMae

Love it. Get ’em Ms. Moss. We’re here for you.

  • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

    That nail art. Let’s discuss.

    • MarissaLG

It’s cool, but she looks uncomfortable- like a tween wearing lee press-ons for the first time.

  • Mars Tokyo

Gee, could they have air brushed photos any more? They look like illustrations not photos.

  • frannyprof

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I love her in that Dior.

    • alyce1213

I know. After all the crap Dior we’ve been looking at, this suit is incredible.

  • Bradio311

That Dior suit is SWOON WORTHY. I would kill to have a men’s version of it!

  • Imasewsure

That suit!!! EVERYthing!! She looks fab too

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

THAT DIOR SUIT. I’m in love. I never thought I’d be able to say that again. Kudos, Mr. Simons – now that I’ve damned you with faint praise, GIMME.

  • Denise Rambo

H…A…T…E the hair. LOVE the makeup.

  • Therese Bohn

In the first picture on the step ladder she reminds me of Bette Davis.

  • boweryboy

She looks fabulous. I’m not crazy about the Valentino or the sideswept hair.

    • alyce1213

The Valentino is a needle scratch in an otherwise gorgeous array of fashion.

  • alyce1213

Honey, you’re an actress, not a model. Yet, I do appreciate the light in your eyes.
    In other news:

  • Chattygal

Can’t wait to see her in The One I Love. Still annoyed she was passed over for an Emmy nom this year, though.

  • Jessica

    hair is a mess!!

  • Little_Olive

But must they make a point of it on EVERY COVER these people get and say he/she talks about “life beyond MM”? kind of ruins the effect, no?

  • ShaoLinKitten

The hair really bugs me in these. I wonder if she will really be in season 2 of True Detective. That would definitely be a lateral move for her at this point, from one top tier show to another.

  • bellafigura1

No, she’s noir, she’s Barbara Stanwyck. Brilliant.

  • in a pickle

It’d be life imitating art if her career takes off as the actors cast as the earlier generation who couldn’t ever quite get into the modern swing of things fade a bit (not that I wish that on them).

  • demidaemon

I am so surprised that I adore the Dior shot. Are those pigs flying? Is it the beginning of the Apocalypse?

  • SophieCollier

LIVING FOR that Dior suit. It’s perfect on her.

  • MC B

I love the first shot on the stairs. She looks like Marlene Dietrich but brunette.

  • Jacob Bowen

Yes Ms. Moss I DO want to BE YOU! I especially want to be you in that suit…because I want to wear it to school!

  • understateddiva

love the Swinton-y oddness of the Valentino shot.

  • Lizzy

I still see her as Zoe Bartlett…..

  • Trickytrisha

Gorgeous pics, talented woman. The only thing I’ve seen her in other than Mad Men is Top of the Lake, in which she was spectacular. Girl can ACT.

    • GemFemme

She absolutely blew me away in Top of the Lake. She’s so luminous.

  • LeelaST

    Two words: Stun. Ning.

  • MichelleRafter

    She looks amazing. Bravo.

  • Coolekat

She is like Ugly Betty transformed.

  • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

    Knocked out, drop dead gorgeous.

  • Lisalady161

In that pant suit she levels up to the Tildanator. Love this spread.

  • berkeleygirl

Definitely her best ever… I’ve known she’s had it in her for a long time. Years ago, I saw a little movie called Imaginary Crimes – Harvey Keitel played her dad, Fairuza Balk (remember her?) as her older sister. She was fabulous.

  • kategs

She needs to hire Karla stat, she looks terrific.

  • Uncle Spike

Wow. Stylist, photographer, makeup artist, editor, and whoever came up with the ideas for these should all get a raise – or at least a bottle of the best champagne money can buy. These are stunning, full stop. I honestly had no idea Lizzie had it in her. Bravas all around.

  • deech_sea

Love the photos. Loved her in “Top of the Lake.” Looking forward to future projects.

  • suzq

That Dior suit is delicious. I want to eat every bite of it. I love her retro, flapper nails, too.

  • StrandedFashionista

I’m very much in love with the cover shot.

  • Clydette Wantland

Bravo Beth! She looks super high fashion.

  • amanda lynn

She looks great. I’m loving that hairstyle for this shoot. I like that it’s consistent in the photos, at first glance it looks like she’s got the half-head-shaved thing happening.

  • EEKstl

BRAVA!! Fabulous, love the clothes and everyone involved just nailed it.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

  • mommyca

The Dior suit is divine beyond believe…
She looks amazing in all the pictures…

  • crashtestbonnie

LOVE the shot with the Dior suit – GORGEOUS!

  • Gatto Nero

Great spread. Dramatic, moody, a little eccentric. Gorgeous clothes. Suits her to a T. And she’s killing it.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Hair is silly, but she can work the hell out of a suit.

  • http://toongrrl.deviantart.com/ Toongrrl

    Peggy…plain? *narrows eyes*
