Here’s the story of a lovely lady…

… who really hasn’t figured out her style.

Look, we give Miss Chloe all the credit in the world for really going for it, fashion-wise. From the second she hit the public eye, she made sure to make good use of the clothes now available to her and she’s demonstrated a willingness to experiment and be bold. All good, as far as we’re concerned. But she’s had way more misses than hits; especially lately. Instead of progressing in her style evolution, the way someone like, say, Kiernan Shipka or Elle Fanning have, she’s been getting more erratic. Not terrible necessarily, just all over the map.

Now, if this was the real world, we wouldn’t be holding any 17-year-old to the standard we’re applying to her. And of course anyone (but especially the young) should be encouraged to try new things out in their style choices, but like we said, there’s been a whole lot of awkward lately, to our eyes.

This is not a terrible outfit, but it is so very not the right look for a 17-year-old. It would, however, look fantastic on a 60-year-old.

Wrong outfit, wrong venue. Chloe, send this over to Helen Mirrin who actually has the gravitas (and figure) to wear this the right way.

    • http://instagram.com/gioioio gioioio

Jane Fonda might have made this WERQ

      • Anna Vasquez

Was coming down here to say the saaaame thing. Truth.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

      Harper Valley PTA.

    • Call me Bee

At the VMAs, even a 60 year old would look boring in this. It is a Saturday brunch outfit. Cute shoes, though.

      • MoHub

I’m in my 60s and would wear this. With a proper bra, of course, and some fun but sensible flats.

        • evave2

Your comments made me go back, and yeah I think she needs more foundation.

But to uncles’ comment, maybe her style is to have no distinguishable style, she likes being really eclectic. Just an idea. I don’t buy it either. I think she likes shiny fashion and just grabs something. But that’s ok too, like uncles said, she is 17, let her enjoy herself. She works like crazy, doesn’t she?

    • http://wardrobemalfunctioned.tumblr.com Yaysita

Why isn’t that top just a mini-dress? That would be cute and much more age-appropriate.
Why couldn’t those pants be at least black? Black, leather cigarette pants would youth this ensemble up a little bit. No?

      • ballerinawithagun

        An adorable mini dress!

    • Glam Dixie

Not even a 60 year old should use Christmas tinsel as a belt.

    • In_Stitches

This would be too old on Julianne Moore, an actress who played her mom in a movie.

I suppose I should be happy she didn’t lengthen it 2″ and just skip the pants. That’s what most of her contemporaries would be doing.

    • Coleen

Well, NOW the gray manicure I loved a few days ago just looks sad and fungiferous.

    • papillon

She must have been boiling in that. It’s pretty but not appropriate for the venue. Maybe for the Golden Globes?
I do appreciate that she’s always covered up though! You just keep on wearing clothes, Chloe!

      • MartyBellerMask

Maybe for the Golden GIRLS. ;)
Come on, you gave me that one…

    • JR Labrador

Dinner at the Captain’s table on a seniors cruise.

    • http://www.domesticdisturbia.com/ Christi Wampler

      She looks like Lucille Bluth.

      • Imasewsure

This would be lovely for a Motherboy after dinner party of course

    • NinjaCate

Ooh, I saw this last night and immediately thought “TLO is going to HATE this.” Half right.

    • Jaeda Laurez

It’s very grandmother-of-the-bride. And it’s a hard look to pull off when you don’t have a natural waist, that whole..belt and tunic thing.

    • Beto

Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why ? Why? I love ya girl, but… BUT YOU’RE FREAKING 17 YEARS OLD. If you insisted on that outfit then why you didn’t cut the pants and convert them to hot pants at the least? Sigh! Caso perdido.

    • Fuchsiaforever

I love the top, hate the pants. Maybe the top with a silver, black, pink or white mini skirt?

    • MilaXX

“I’m Julie McCoy, your cruise director.”

    • Janet B

She’s so cute and this outfit is not.
Too heavy for August in LA, not very youthful, silly Christmas belt, unflattering, etc.

    • Sarah

I hate that those pants are pink. The whole thing is very Valentine’s Day at the assisted living facility.

    • Lex

This makes my eyes bleed. I hate Valentine-y colors together!

    • Alexis Wenceslao

This is something Evie from Girls Will Be Girls (2003) would wear on a regular day.

    • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

My first thought was, nonono, put that back in Granny’s closet!

    • marlie

This would have actually been better for that book signing event that she did a few weeks back. Otherwise, she could have taken this top and paired it with a cute little mini skirt, and we would have been in business.

      • Vanessa Reyes

I agree about the mini skirt or even black short shorts. Anything but those pants and the belt sort of looks like barbed wire.

      • demidaemon

Is it weird that I thought it was all one piece? Because it kind of looks like it is.

    • teensmom99

Maybe this is also too 60 year oldish, but I”d love to see that top with a tight black skirt with a little something interesting going on. Or maybe that’s because that’s how I dressed the 90s (when I was in my 30s not 60s or teens but whatever).

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Seven posts before noon (CST)? You guys are on a roll! The summer dry spell appears to be over.

    • elemspbee

been waiting to see this post. I love this outfit but it’s age inapropo–or she couldn’t make it work somehow.

    • Tracy_Flick

This outfit’s biggest sin isn’t that it’s too old for her, it’s that it’s very unflattering to her shape. I think this is made for a curvier lady. I can’t hate it, though, because I love how she went the covered-up route to stand out from the boob-taped masses.

      • Kitten Mittons

I’ll agree with you there. I’m pleased she’s not showing off all the assets. There are better ways to do that, of course, but still. After the Kim K. post, I’ll take a little modesty with my coffee.

    • Kitten Mittons

The Brady reference was spot on. I can see nothing else.

    • FibonacciSequins

      How very Boca Raton.

    • Dora Kishinevsky

This shows a sense of humor though, doesn’t it? I figure she thought the only way to stand out at the VMAs is to dress super-conservatively. I do like it in that sense.

    • NMMagpie

My first thought was: “Now she’s going to pull out her make up kit and sell us something.”

    • @Biting Panda

      Three words:

      Seventeen. August. Fail.

      That is all.

    • Dreamwr8tr

My mother would cosign pants and a long sleeve top on a 17 year old in the summer. This is venue and age inappropriate. If it were a mini dress or a romper (I don’t like rompers but I think she could make a romper cute and not infantile, maaybe), I could see it being appropriate.

    • JauntyJohn

Oh honey, send this to Jane Fonda.

When she wears it we’ll all pee ourselves talking about how hot she looks and that she’s still “got it.”
I do, however, give you massive points for going the “covered up” route at this event, rather than the “Hello, world! Would you like to be my gynecologist for the evening?” this venue encourages.

      • demidaemon

What’s the name for a “breast doctor?” because we shouldn’t forget that other, equally important profession.

    • AlisonS

This is very much ladies who lunch and not VMA material…. Where’s the edge? The rock? The roll? The one chance to dress like a video girl and fit in!

    • Anna

I respect not going the Ariana Grande route and whatever else the majority of her peers are doing, but that’s about the only positive thing I can say about this.

    • Bonnie Blue

      Aunt Gloria’s Christmas dinner outfit.

    • FrigidDiva

What in Hades is that “belt” made out of? Is it Christmas tinsel? Is it barbed-wire? Is this some kind of new diet device so that if you over eat you end up eviscerating yourself when you sit down?

    • Town

Even my mom, who is in her late 60s, said she was much too covered up and conservative for the VMAs. Like why does she look like she’s waiting in line with a tray at the Piccadilly?

    • schadenfreudelicious

Chloe hopes to be the top seller with her multi-level marketing gig real soon…

    • Little_Olive

I want to see Carol Burnett in this.

      • Sarah

Carol Burnett GAVE it to her, I’m thinking…

        • Qitkat

Because Betty White turned it down.

    • imspinningaround

Aw, she shopped her nana’s closet.

    • MM4321

I see Jane Fonda rocking the sh!t out of this.

    • nannypoo

Yes, it’s bad. But remember when every picture of her included duckface? This is way better than that.

    • AceOn6

I’ll cut her some slack on this one. I see the inner dialogue as “I’m always freezing cold at these things and I’m a bit player at this event. Find me something comfortable.”

    • BEARAYMOND

Are those FLEUCHON I see (Who was that female Project Runway contestant with the craft box aesthetic?)

      • demidaemon

Angela the first (not to be confused with Angela the Nervous).

        • DuBey2

I love you for “Angela the Nervous” – because it helped me remember Angela the first.

          • demidaemon

            No problem!

    • Joanna

I won’t lie – I LOVE that top. But then again, I’m 41 years old, and she’s not. However, I think she could have saved the top with a cute pair of short leather black shorts to show off her gams.

    • Imasewsure

Seriously a total Carol Brady look… Chloris Leachman or Betty White would rock this as well!

    • SophieCollier

That top looks like lesions on peeled skin. Horrible nightmare of a fabric.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I am so conflicted about this. On the one hand, as I scrolled down my heart skipped a beat because the “dress” stopped and I thought for an instant that she had bare legs and a dress that stopped above her crotch. Then I realised it was a top and pants and was relieved. Then I realised that the pants are hideous and she’s wearing a replica of Christ’s crown of thorns as a belt and was sad again. It’s been a rollercoaster and I no longer know how to feel. Time for a drink, I think!

      • BLauDGaspode

You captured my whole experience almost exactly. I honestly thought, “Why is her dress so short? Oh, good, pants. Oh no! PANTS! What is that belt? Why is she dressed like a 97 year old?”
I’m laying down with a drink.

    • Lori

I give her half credit for thinking that at the VMAs the most attention grabbing look would be the one that doesn’t show skin. When everyone else is trying to make the world her gynecologist there’s something to be said for going all the way in the other direction. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the way to do it.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Was this whole show just a parade of fug?

    • shopgirl716

I’ll take this over Taylor Swift’s romper any day of the week.

    • yayito83

I would wear this to work…

    • Yoshio

a stitched front seam – a homage to the polyester/double knit hey day of the Seventies?

    • lunchcoma

I was wondering and wondering why you were criticizing this pretty blonde lady’s outfit, since I’d really like to own that top.

Then I looked up and realized this was Chloe Moretz, who is young enough to be my daughter. Yeah, I agree, this is too old for her.

    • Nicole

If the shirt were longer, it would look great on her as a mini. Ditch the pants and this is very cute.

    • jilly_d

I’m a 32-year old schoolteacher and I want this outfit (sans tacky belt). That’s not good for young miss Chloe here.

    • Cousin_Rose

Nah, I’m 61 and I think that looks too old for ME.

      • BuffaloBarbara

I think it looks too old for anyone. It’s an outfit that says, “I’m for old women who don’t want to bother anymore.”

    • librarygrrl64

Hate the belt thingy, and yes, this is matronly.

    • alyce1213

Jane Fonda would look lovely in this pants outfit.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Palm Beach matron.

    • KayEmWhy

I’m not going to bash a teenager who is not dressing like a skank, good for her. That being said, I agree, it’s too too old for her.

    • megohd

The problem is that 60 year olds DON’T wear outfits like this!

      • kategs

        yes we do!

    • Adrianna Grężak

The pants really look like something my mother bought me to wear to church in 2002

    • Jessica Goldstein

On the hand, it IS too old for her. On the other hand, major props to her for trying to find something fashionable and not just reverting to flashing tons of skin.

    • CJ Guziewicz

I would say, Betty White 30 years ago…

    • semirose

I think that top with a pair of black shorts would have been a cute look. Honey you don’t have to wear the runway look every time.

    • frannyprof

Maybe she could loan it to Meryl Streep?

    • PinkyK

That look is too old for me; and I’m a bifocal wearing old foagie!

    • Therese Bohn

Please don’t bring back those horrendous faux front piping seam thingys? Brings back frightening memories of middle aged women wearing meltable brown polyester double-knit slacks with those seams when I was a kid!

    • cocohall

i loved the color on her, but otherwise I’m with everyone else in thinking that this either needs to be a lengthened into a mini dress or paired with shorts to work for her.

    • Haley Buchanan

That top could be an adorable dress on her if you added 6 inches to the hem.

    • crashtestbonnie

Yep. Pants OR top, not both and NOT together. That top is the kind of thing we breeders look for to camouflage the post-partum belly. Just me? Ok, cool… I’ll be over here in the corner sneaking boxed wine.

    • demidaemon

One word came to mind about this outfit: orthopedic.

      • tallgirl1204

Dang– I thought it was super cute. But then, that’s me, over there, in the orthopedic….. never mind

    • Danielle

It’s like when DJ Tanner showed up on the first day of school in the same outfit as a teacher.

    • DuBey2

Note to Self: No matter how irresistible it looks on the actual Runway, remember that it will never look that good IRL. Unless you are Lupita.

    • ktr33

      or a 77-year-old, e.g., Jane Fonda.

    • boweryboy

Helen Mirren would look awesome in this.
