Cate Blanchett in New York City

Posted on August 04, 2014

Aw, man. Why do the ladystars always gotta screw things up with inappropriate bootie deployment? And Cate, why did you have to be one of them?

LOVING the dress. Hating the booties. We will refrain from yelling “STANK BOOT,” because she appears to be wearing socks, at least. Although seeing as how it’s August, there’s no way it’s anything but a swamp down there by the end of the day. Assuming Cate Blanchett sweats that is – and there’s no indication that she does.

We can’t stay mad. The look is chic and she’s working it. A pretty dress and the right attitude can make up for sweaty footwear choices. There’s a life lesson in there somewhere, but we’re going to need at least two more cups of coffee before attempting to unravel it.

Et tu, Cate?? Love the dress and she is rocking the chic city look. But the boots and little socks (!) have to go

  • Frank_821

Maybe she’s expecting to walk through a muddy area of town and she has an alternate but fabulous pair of shoes to change into at her destination

Yes yes. That’s what we’ll go with

  • SewingSiren

I absolutely love the dress. It’s a pity about the boots, so many different and even comfortable shoes would have worked with this.

    • Rhonda Shore

A clunky sandal would have worked well here.

  • leahpapa

Meh, it’s been so mild lately I don’t even object to the booties. I like that Cate exudes an “I don’t care if you don’t like it” insouciance, in the chicest possible way.

  • Let’s pretend she has a nice pair of pumps in that giant bag.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

Yeah, that’s what I thought, too! She’s got the “perfect pumps” in her tote!

    • OffToSeeHim

That’s some management thinking right there! Let’s do that. Not nude, right? A color that picks up a color in the dress, or black. Right?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Along with a Palantir and Galadriel’s elf ears.

  • lobsterlen

Love the dress. The boots I don’t understand at all. And what the hell is she carrying in that bag? I am having sympathy shoulder bag just looking at her.

    • What you don’t see is Taylor Swift leaving the gym up ahead of her – CB is being maternal and carrying all her crap.

      • OffToSeeHim

That was funny! I got a little out-loud chuckle out of it. 🙂

      • demidaemon

As if Cate would do that. She’s more likely to give her a look over and say, “Plebeian.”

  • The dress is perfect for summer in the city. The boots should be deployed when shoveling the walk in January.

  • altermyego

The boots are flat, so I think she’s got some walking to do. And that bag is certainly large enough to hold a pair of fabulous heels. The problem with that theory is that she must have other flats that she can wear. I mean she”s Cate-fucking-Blanchett!
Even with the boot, I bow down. Fabulous dress!

    • I will remain convinced that she has a fabulous pair of shoes in that bag and is wearing the awful booties because she’s walking and not taking cabs or hopping into a limo.

    • “Flat”? I mean, they aren’t huge, but that’s a 2 1/2″ heel!

      • altermyego

I meant relatively flat. Y’know in fashionable ladies terms.

        • Having just looked at Chloe Moretz’s shoes, I see what you mean!

  • Noah

I’m not opposed to the boots in summer look, just not *those* boots. Too heavy for this look.

As a sidenote, she’s in New York to do The Maids, which I’m going to see in a couple weeks. I can hardly contain my excitement.

    • baxterbaby

Me too! Can’t wait! Blanchett and Hupert!

  • dustinrhodes

Well, I just spent a week in Texas for work–which is to say I have now been influenced–but I think she looks fantastic from head to toe!

  • Jaeda Laurez

I like the idea of the dress, but I don’t like the fit of the dress- it looks like it’s too big for her, the front looks sad and droopy. And the booties are sure to give a case of hotfoot.

  • World of Sass

I hate booties! That is all.

    • Daisy Walker

This. All booties should die in a fire.

  • ivfive

I saw the “inappropriate bootie deployment” and expected to see Cate in a pair of Daisy Dukes. Wrong kind of bootie…

    • Jackie4g

Well, the other choice would have called back to similar stylings of printed, floaty dresses and cowboy boots in the early 1980s. I think she’s got some walking to do and these were the best choice.

      • baxterbaby

I’m thinking Los Angeles in the late 90’s early aughts. Used to see floaty dress and lace up booties all over Santa Monica and POP

    • Skippymom1

This is exactly where my mind went too! I was shocked thinking “Oh dear, our beloved Ms. Blanchette is showing her posterior now? The civilized world as we know it is over.”
Then I saw it was those booties and calm was restored.

      • Guest

On TLO home page, the ad for American Apparel is definitely inappropriate bootie deployment.

  • Judy_J

It doesn’t help that those are really ugly booties. Here in Austin, people wear boots year round, even in the hottest of summers. I’d sign off on this look if only the boots were more stylish. These are just ugly and look like they are too big for her foot.

  • In_Stitches

That’s some dark Galadriel beauty. I gaze upon her and despair…at those terrible booties. Simple plimsols might have worked.

    • Bad Idea Jeans

I think we all know that the Lady Galadriel does not sweat. Also, am I nuts, or is she carrying a blazer? In August. In NYC. Elves must run super-cold.

      • Jackie4g

Not that. The air conditioning in certain buildings is set at arctic.

  • Jangle57

Maybe she was just trying to put a lot of coverage between her feet and the sometimes questionable state of the sidewalks in NYC and just didn’t have a decent pair of flats on her; I know I always feel a little scummier from having walked them in sandals or even flip flops……

    • empath

I work in Philly and I am amazed and a little grossed out by the nakedness of feet and flimsiness of sandals and flipflops trodding on this morning’s spittle and centuries of city ick.

    • Jackie4g

Yeah. City streets demand foot coverage. It’s just common sense, unless you don’t mind arriving at your destination with grime between your toes. A pedicure and grimy toes just don’t mix. I think it’s always better to carry your good shoes and wear what’s sensible for transit.

  • Anapestic

She really looks like she wasn’t planning to be photographed and doesn’t care what we think. I reckon she’s wearing the boots for practical reasons, and I think she looks great.

  • Kitten Mittons

I have so much hate for booties. These booties are practically the reason why. Just weird and not flattering at all.
I love the rest of this look, and I think that’s a blazer she’s carrying, which would make me love it even more.

  • Terri Ellis

I want that dress. And if they had been cowboy boots, it all would have worked.

    • boweryboy

I think cowboy boots would’ve been an even worse choice than the cowboy booties she’s wearing.

    • StellaZafella

Annie Oakley goes to the prom…

      • Jackie4g

Worse. Urban Cowboy, 1980. You probably weren’t yet born.

        • StellaZafella

Bless you. I was 27. and the Beetles were the only ones wearing “short tops”.

      • Kent Roby

I had to read your comment 3 times before I realized it doesn’t say “Annie Oakley does porn”!

        • StellaZafella

Why Mr Roby, how you talk…warm in N’ahlins today?

          • Kent Roby

It’s a bit warm, yes, but my poor twisted mind would likely have misread your comment on a chilly day as well!

    • Kent Roby

I saw lots of cowboy boots with dresses a week ago in Nashville; I didn’t like a single combo.

  • Beardslee

“Moses supposes his toeses are roses/But Moses supposes erroneously.”

    • That crazy Comden & Green pair. Always coming up with the perfect line.

  • empath

With her bulging tote and jacket in hand, Cate is working the look as a woman on a mission with a long day planned. She needs something comfortable to walk in NYC. It’s likely that she has a lighter pair of shoes in her bag. I applaud her ‘to hell with photos — I got places to go, things to do, and people to see’ attitude.

  • nannypoo

I love the dress but with the boots it looks like something she found at a church jumble sale.

  • suzinrva

This is “regular” Cate. She is running late for Monday morning meeting. She throws on what is clean and doesn’t need pressing and comfy shoes to get to her destination on time. Everyone knows that office buildings tend to be swampy or frigid – she has a jacket and a way to keep her tootsies warm while rolling her eyes in whatever office she has to sit in this morning. We will see her later today looking ethereal as ever.

  • Love the dress. If she had to wear boots she should’ve borrowed some lace-up Victorian jobs from HBC.

  • Cindy

I like the style and the print of the dress, but a black dress during the day does not say Summer to me.

  • I want that dress sooo badly.

  • sarcasmfont

First, “inappropriate bootie deployment” had me expecting something other than commentary on her footwear choice, lol! Second, I like the print and the colors, but just not as a whole dress…as a blouse or a skirt, yes, but not together. Or maybe it’s the fit that has me thinking that; she looks a little frumpy in the midsection. The booties…eh. Don’t work with the dress, but could see them with a hundred other outfits.

    • smayper

Me too! I was confusing booties with booty, I guess.

  • James

I love that dress. She looks like someone who has a long day ahead of her, with a ton of things to do and she’s getting to it. I don’t think she cares all that much about the look, the booties are comfy.

  • Kent Roby

Cate is reminding the world that practical shoes often leave the smallest carbon footprints. Terrific dress.

  • MilaXX

I guess even Cate is capable of a scroll down fug.

  • Qitkat

I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt, although it is such a strange choice for August, that these are Strolling Around Manhattan Boots, and her heels are in her giant bag for later. She looks like a Woman on a Mission. Giving Zero Fucks.

    Pretty dress, I think?

  • Firecat

LOVE the dress, love the boots. They make the look more edgy.

  • ktr33

pretty dress, but I think I wish the bodice maybe had a little better fit to it? Most booties bug, but these especially so. I’m not sure what I’d swap them out for, tho. Maybe a spectator flat, or girlie oxford, if she’s in comfort mode, which she seems to be.

  • Jackie4g

She knew she would have to do some walking and those were the only shoes she packed that she can walk in?

    • Qitkat

I walked the streets of The City once in uncomfortable, yet stylish (for me) shoes, and my feet still haven’t forgiven me. Sorry kittens, I’m old enough that comfort trumps fashion for walking, every time.

  • Sophie

The dress looks too big, but the print is nice. Those are some awful booties, and too big like the dress.

  • Izzy_Gremlin

I think the boots are a concession to comfort (at least for me, heeled boots are more comfortable than regular heels or flats) – but have to agree that some casual shoes would have been a better call, or maybe even *gasp* a pair of cute cowboy boots. (I know, I’m a heretic…)

  • rebeemoon

I like this dress and boots. Don’t mind being in the minority here.

  • Grumpy Girl

Is she carrying a rain jacket? With the sporadic showers in the lower east coast, my thought would be that she was prepared for surprise showers or lingering puddles, and is just carrying the jacket since it’s not raining at the moment?

  • nikol345

    love that place..

  • AllisonAndStuff

She’s in rehearsal for a play right now, which means she gets a free pass from me on whatever she wants. She’s not sightseeing, she’s going to work.

  • FibonacciSequins

If I needed those shoes for comfortable walking, I wouldn’t have worn that dress with them. In fact, I wouldn’t have worn that dress, period. It looks like it’s about five sizes too big on her.

  • jorinde

I just love booties with summer dresses. And I swear to you they’re never stanky. I sweat in the middle of the body, my feet and hands are always cold. And from my experience with grabbing men’s and women’s hands I can tell that men tend to have warmer hands than women. Maybe feet as well.
Also I’m always wearing socks in the booties. With Cate’s dress I have to admit I don’t like them either, if you wear booties, the hem has to be higher.

  • Janet B

This weekend, I finally understood how good a pair of booties can look when deployed correctly. I had an “aha!” moment while watching a forgettable old movie.

  • RescueMe23

I am 100% certain the appropriate shoes are in her bag. I have to believe that in order to go on with my day…

  • Kerry McCombs

Damn. When you said “inappropriate bootie” I was thinking “booty” and was excited to see if Cate’s dress blew up in a stiff breeze and flashed her asscheeks at us! That would have been awesome!

  • OffToSeeHim

No. NO! A thousand times NO! A pretty dress and the right attitude can NOT make up for poor footwear choices! Keep the faith, TLo!!

  • Michelle Gennari

    But…why??? Geeeeze.

  • uprightcitizen

Those appear to be cropped cowboy boots, and I don’t believe they’re ever intended to be worn without the top being covered by a pair of boot-cut jeans. Even if she wanted to wear a little boot with this dress, this just isn’t the one. They look sloppy and make her feet look heavy and masculine. They must be really comfortable for her to go to that level of not giving a crap about how they look.

  • Tee

I thought inappropriate booty deployment was only a Kardashian thing.

  • Lisalady161

To me the outfit only looks good BECAUSE it’s on Cate. Anyone else in it would look like a homeless person.

  • KT

I LOVE those boots, but they do look a little weird with this look. Still, everything’s so cute and stylish that I don’t really mind.

  • Jeff Warhurst

Maybe she didn’t feel like shoving her feet into a pair of Louboutins today, just to walk down the street carrying clearly a sack full of goods.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Love the dress. As for the footwear-it’s August, isn’t this the perfect time for a cute wedge, a designer sandal, anything other than black boots?

  • EarthaKitten

Cate was featured in Sunday’s New York Times Theater section described as follows: “Ms. Blanchett was radiant in a red shift and tan boots.” While Cate was wearing a different dress and boots than featured by TLo, the look was the same. I agree with the NYTimes — I love Cate’s attitude more than any footwear she dons. And I bet her feet are yelping as she prepares for opening night of “The Maids” this week at Lincoln Center.

  • whaddami

maybe this is how she disguises herself? Like, “no one will guess it’s CATE BLANCHETT in these terribly proportioned boots with this floaty floral dress! MWAH HA HA HA!!!”

  • alyce1213

The dress is chic on Cate, but I think it would look frumpy on lesser mortals. I love the sunglasses and her big tote, which is clearly filled with real stuff. I’m trying to find an excuse for the booties, like she had to muck around in something, and hoping better shoes are in the tote.

  • Tracy_Flick

I hate booties. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no appropriate deployment. Having said that, the loose floral dress with the cowboy-ish boot is sort of an Emmylou 70s country thing, so I give her a pass.

  • lalahartma

Because we like the the look of inappropriate boots with dresses or skirts.

  • kim bunchalastnames

    she is totally swintoning.

  • demidaemon

Even Cate can’t make the booties work, even though she wore a damn fine dress.

  • DuBey2

In the minority here to say I hate it all. If you’re schlepping so much heavy stuff that you have to lean to the side while walking, don’t wear a flimsy, floaty, too long dress. Also, that neckine/bodice does her no favors in my opinion. She’s slender & delicate & just NO to the booties with anything other than super skinny jeans rolled up once.

  • aquamarine17

I love this dress and love it on her. but, I agree, the boots are out. maybe it was an Australian decision…

    • in a pickle

As someone who must confess to having pics of myself wearing floaty florals with Blundstones in Australia, I can concur it is an Australian thing- or it was 20 years ago.

      • PumpkintheCat

Yes indeedy it was. I have the same pictures…

      • Ali2044

Ditto, but they were Doc Martens.

  • joything

Because some days even Galadriel/Kate Hepburn/Elizabeth I has to say, “Aaaaah, f**k it.”

  • snarkykitten

I for one am utterly thrilled by the sloppy grungy boots making a comeback. I was too young to enjoy it the first time around.

  • livesarah

Alright I was all ready to jump in and defend the booties because I usually quite like them, but those are pretty bad! May as well be gumboots…

  • d4divine

Mama is working…she don’t have the time nor does she care about pretty at this moment. One of the many reasons she is fabulous.

  • Don Hackett

don’t forget to wear your galoshes…

  • Filmjen

A floaty dress and a clunky bootie is a California staple.

  • Swoon… love love the dress….

  • Dino Bonačić

I love the boots – it’s that perfect summer boho chic. I think that trend is very declarative – either love or loathe
