Aubrey Plaza in Peter Pilotto at the “About Alex” Los Angeles Premiere

Posted on August 07, 2014

There was a moment, prior to Aubrey going out the door to this event, when a Bitchy Gay would have been a very helpful thing to have in the room.

Because it seems to us a Bitchy Gay would say something like:

“Okay, the skirt’s COMPLETELY fucked up, but we like the top half. But darling, you simply must eradicate the idea that purple accessories are what’s called for here. That is how clowns accessorize, sweetie. You’re a lady. Let’s get you some basic black pieces, since there’s so much going on with the dress. But first, go in the bathroom and wipe that shit off your eyes, mkay? We are not doing purple face tonight.”

At least that’s what we hear. We wouldn’t know.

    BAD SHOES. Argh.

    • rkdgal

I would amend this to Great Shoes, Bad for this Outfit.

      • Sarah

Yes, they would be okay elsewhere, but they’s a bad choice here.

  • JasmineAM

Love the dress, hate everything else.

  • jilly_d

This is probably my irrational celebrity love for AP talking, but I kinda dig it. Great colors for her.

    • annla

Take away the white stripes and I’m down with all of it. Or maybe just 1 white stripe.

      • SugarSnap108

Yes. I can’t believe it, but I’m about two stripes away from loving a Pilotto.

(OK, I’d also edit the part of the skirt where it suddenly becomes a different dress.)

        • demidaemon

I don’t mind the white stripes. It’s the weird contrasting print in the skirt and the weird split there that bug me.

      • Caaro3

The whites stripes are what MAKES it. TLo, as always, dead on about the accessories

  • Carrie

The makeup doesn’t bother me. But agreed, even as a purple lover I agree their too much. This dress is so busy, simple is best here.

    • AlisonS

Maybe if the accessories we in black the uncles would agree on the purple makeup? That’s the best warpaint I’ve seen her in.

      • Carrie

It’s a good smokey eye (even if they are overplayed) and the drama doesn’t bother me because the dress has so much of it. I can see it as less OTT with the simpler accessories

    • jen_vasm

I don’t mind the makeup as much as the smacked-ass hair. And purple accessories.

  • Sophie

I prefer the long-sleeved version, but this is a bit more seasonal.

  • Shalhevet

I LOVE the dress. Minus the white stripes, maybe, but this dress is AWESOME. The print is breathtaking and interesting and pretty. And the silhouette is cute. Love the sleeves, neckline, flarey skirt. Agreed on the accessories, though.

    • Kathy

Yup. The white stripes are a bridge too far, but Pilotto always has too much going on.

      • CT14

The third white strap doesn’t connect in the back! WTF, PP?

Anytime I see Pilotto’s name, I know an OUT is coming.

        • Kathy

I wouldn’t mind so much if he would share the drugs he’s taking. 😉

          • Kent Roby

Maybe that’s what the white stripes represent. Or the band.

        • sienna elm

I know – that third (half) strap is just killing me! Those white belt/stripes are awful.

        • evave2

I know, that’s like the second thing I noticed (other than the non-matchy swatch on the left side of the skirt). But I think he is trying to make a point here (I am ignoring the purple alligatorish heels, I can’t see how they’d work here) and I don’t get the point.

          • smayper

True of so MANY things in celeb and fashion worlds.

          • Kent Roby

This reminds me of that awesome scene in “L.A. Story” where Steve Martin gives a long detailed description of the action in a painting….of a red rectangle.

          • demidaemon

To be fair, if you got the point, you might have to evaluate your sanity and/or submit to a drug test.

  • asherlev1

    …I really dig it.

    • imspinningaround

Yeah, I like it too. I would’ve gone with a black clutch but overall I think this is cool.

  • Gatto Nero

The dress is too long for her (see fit on model). With that fixed, and some sharp black accessories, this might work.
    Also, hair.

  • FibonacciSequins

I irrationally want to like this because I like her so much, but regretfully I must agree with you on all counts.

  • Avonell

To many design elements in one dress. Too many style elements on one person.

  • sugarkane105

That top half is GORGEOUS. I would let her keep the shoes if the bottom half were simpler, just because they are so pretty. The clutch has gotta go though, switch it out for basic black.

    • Kitten Mittons

That’s my vote, too. I really love those shoes, and I really dislike that skirt and the weird bands. Keep the shoes and find a better skirt/pants to complete this.

      • kimmeister

Me too, I love the shoes and want them with an entirely different outfit.

        • Kitten Mittons

I have an outfit in my closet that would work. I’ll take them off her hands.

      • smayper

Agree completely. I love the deep saturated colors in that dress. Why fuck it up with weird bandage like thingies?

        • Kitten Mittons

          Because Pilotto?

  • Kent Roby

That’s a super-tricky dress, and the shoes and bag are wrong, yet I think that overall she looks terrific. I actually love her makeup here.

  • decormaven

Aww, she brought her purple pencil case to school.

  • Chuck Barthelme

Matchy shoes AND purse. No. Also, would have liked the dress better if the mountain skyline pattern from the top wasn’t repeated upside down at the hem.

  • quiltrx

I like the accessories, but absolutely NOT with this dress.
Anyone else think the dress would look SO much better if those bands were black? The white reads “waistband elastic” to m.

    • StelledelMare

I think in black and without that the third one it would be perfect.

  • MoHub

This gives me a daymare in which Pilotto and Katranzou co-design a collection, and the world explodes.

    • Thomas

I do have to applaud them for always trying something different and colorful though. I’ll take them over Stella or Raf Simons (for Dior) any day.

      • MoHub

True. But I sometimes feel both of them would be better off as painters rather than fashion designers since their garments don’t seem to be about actually accentuating the human body. I sometimes feel as if so much pictorial imagery belongs on a stretched canvas in a gallery rather than on a runway.

    • demidaemon

WITH COLOR. It’ll be a neon nuclear blast.

  • IAmJ

I’d like to believe that the Bitchy Gay would also say something about the hair situation here.

  • SewingSiren

Mostly good. I like the way it’s styled on the runway much , much, more. The starlets think everything is improved with the pointy toe Barbie pump, but it’s not.

  • Alicia

    Missed opportunity for orange sandals.

  • Grumpy Girl

Nope, this dress is not speaking my language. I’m thinking of 70s printed tees with solid color sleeves. Hated them then, not feeling more love now.

The color purple is a good one for her though. I’d think this whole thing would photograph and present better in a black and white photo, rather than in full color.

    • MilaXX

Or those vans the local pot dealer drove and later lived in when his mother finally kicked him out at 24.

      • smayper

HA!!!!! Oh boy, does that bring back some memories. Those exact colors, airbrushed on a black Econoline van. Lurid, I think, is a good adjective. What’s funny is that I love the colors on the dress and don’t find them lurid at all!

  • ashtangajunkie

Weird little outfit, but would have been made much better with a little less purple added.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

Whenever I see her smiling in pictures, I just assume she’s mocking us.

  • doodley

Why does the lowest band not go all the way around? I mean, I hate the bands, regardless, but that just makes me twitchy.

    • FrigidDiva

      Because Peter Pilotto.

      • doodley

Oh, right. I forgot that part.

  • AlexisPayne

Can we at least get a slow clap for her wearing a print, a tricky and out there print no less!

  • Anna

I don’t like the style of the dress, but I love the print (even if it does kinda remind me of Mordor).

And I love purple and all, but these accessories are all wrong. The clutch looks like a glasses case.

  • FrigidDiva

I really wish a BG was in charge of HR at my job and his sole purpose would be to enforce the dress code. I kid you not, there a women wearing sleeveless shirts and TANK TOPS to work. We have a charity program at work where you can pay $25 a quarter to dress casual, but that doesn’t mean dress like you’re going to a weekend BBQ. Shudder.
As for the outfit, I’d love this if the acessories were black, the stripes on the dress had one less, and if she’d done something different to her hair. I don’t mind a messy updo, I deploy them on ocassion myself, but this one just looks like she didn’t have time to brush her hair before trying to put her hair up with bobby pins and hope.

    • Kitten Mittons

That’s a cool program, though, if people don’t abuse it. Lucky you!

      • FrigidDiva

It is really nice, the company’s raised a lot of money for local charities through the program. Unfortunately one of the higher-ups came for a visit not too long ago and looked at how people were dressing and wanted the whole program done away with since people looked so unprofessional. Our local management had to talk her down but the way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if the program disappeared.

        • Kitten Mittons

We had someone ruin our dress code for us here a few years back. I still hold a grudge.

  • Imasewsure

Love the top half of the dress which is a lot of love from me to PP…. I’m ok with the shoes if we could swap out everything else for basic black

  • Zeee

Oh dear. I’m afraid I needed a bitchy gay this morning myself.

    • smayper

I always need one. Especially to sit at a bar with and be bitchy about other women’s clothes!

  • Scimommy

Damn, I LOVE that dress. LOVE. Can I have it? No? Ok.

  • StrandedFashionista

Lava on a dress is bad ass.

  • Aidan B

The accessorizing is indeed awful, but that dress sings on her. Her head looks great too.

  • carrie

I think she looks fantastic! As I scrolled down I couldn’t think of what the complaint would be. G’uncles, have some coffee!

  • Dino Bonačić

I would love orange accessories, but it’s okay this way. Her funny ‘aura’ does the job…

  • MilaXX

I like the face, but I would have definitely gone with black shoes & bag. There’s a limit to the amount of matching one outfit can take.

  • sk8tfan

I just watched the premier of Skin Wars, where the challenge was to body paint something that represented your home state. This reminds me of that.

  • SistaT

Now, see … yikes. I think she looks adorable. I’m not bitchy or gay enough today.

  • Shawn EH

If her gays didn’t tell her to just pick a different dress, period. She’s trying so hard, but still misses. Keep all the snakeskin and just wear a black sweater and capris; she could rock a Hepburn mod moment!

  • ThaliaMenninger

I want that to be a top with a black skirt. Otherwise I can handle the purple shoes and the makeup. But the dress makes it all a bridge too far.

  • Heather Innis

That dress reminds me of a velvet painting. I want to like it for some reason (maybe because I respect all the BK’s), but I can’t.

  • Danielle

I love the purples and oranges in the dress, but agree that purple accessories were a bridge too far.

  • MarissaLG

It would be so much nicer if they removed the bottom two white stripes. (And the purple snakeskin accessories. WHAT??)

  • marlie

I sort of love her makeup, but her hair looks half-assed, and this dress (that’s too long on her) called for black accessories.

  • Dan_In_NYC

Black bag and shoes, different eye makeup and a giant honking orange cocktail ring would have made me love this. The dress is a little weird, but I like it. And those shoes are fun – for another look.

  • queeniethebold

Those white bandages across her midsection look ridiculous.

    That is all.

  • conniemd

Beautiful piece of fabric ruined by white striped bands. Peter Pilotto of course.

  • Mothra

Here’s what I’m thinking. A kickstarter to deploy stylists to these poor young ladies (and men) who clearly have people who hate them working for them, or have no one at all looking after their better images and interests. Figure we can have several on each coast, and maybe some floaters in Europe. Kind of like a CIA Field Agent, but for fashion. Folks who contribute to the kickstarter get “rewards” such as being sent out to ask Taylor Swift what’s in her bag, or to ask Reese which parking lot is her favorite, etc., I really think this is doable. Who is with me?

    • demidaemon

I like this, as long as one of the hires is a bag holding instructor.

  • Lisalady161

If the bitchy gay wouldn’t have said it, the 50-something makeup stylist in the room would have (cough). Like the hair and the top of the dress is adorbs, but that is waaaaaayyyyy too much eye makeup.

For once, I agree with you on the hating the matchy accessories. At least I didn’t start screaming in digust when I saw the whole outfit and considering how I feel about Pilotto, that’s a very positive thing.

  • Trishington

The dress looks good in profile and from the back but the bottom half of the front is just weird. Part skirt, part straight-jacket. Never a good look. Howevs, I have to give her props for wearing something that actually fits. So few of these celebs seem to give fit a second thought.

  • teensmom99

I love this and I love her and for once I am blocking out everything else.

  • Liz

This is actually one of the few Peter Pilotto dresses I’ve seen that doesn’t make me recoil in horror.

  • Bill Curtis

I’m just waiting for Dennis Quaid to crash land his spacecraft on her dress and Lou Gossett to come crawling out of her pocket in lizard man drag.

  • Izzy_Gremlin

You would think that at couture prices, they’d at least pattern-match the fabric along the seams. And what’s with the 1/4 of a missing belt on the back? I like the idea of pairing such a colorful dress (made of molten lava, no less) with simple black accessories, though.

For some reason, the white belts make me think that aliens are using a tractor-beam to abduct cattle from the firey slopes of Mt. Pilotto. That might just be lack of sleep, but I can not unsee it.

  • Qitkat

Pass that dress over here, I’ve got some permanent markers from my grandkids’ visit today, purple, black, pink, orange, or gray, PLEASE, anything other than that focus-pulling white. What is wrong with these designers? It could have been so cute.

  • alyce1213

Ugh. Peter Pilotto. First of all, he’s kind of stealing from Mary Katrantzou from a couple of years ago, and second, just ugly.
The purple snakeskin Jimmy Choo’s — to die for.

  • somebody blonde

The front of the dress is nice, but oy, the back. It would’ve been a lot better if the skirt were black or white, and the accessories were black or gray.

  • Jecca2244

every time i am like “oh it would be fun to be famous” i realize how close the cameras would get to my face and i’m like “no thanks.”

  • demidaemon

It’s almost not horrible for a PP. But, he still had to go and introduce a COMPLETELY UN-FUCKING NECESSARY PRINT IN THE SKIRT. WHY? Why?!

Also, Aubrey, you or your stylist has no idea how to accessorize at all.

  • Haley Buchanan

I think the whole dress is adorable and looks great on her. The matchy accessories need to be burned though.

  • BLauDGaspode

I really wish people would stop answering calls from Peter Pilotto’s people.

    • Ali2044

For real. How many lovely actresses must he besmirch with his rancid designs before he’s stopped?

  • tallgirl1204

so what mountain range is the graphic on the top? It looks like the Teton range to me– taken from a certain angle– which makes me wonder who wants to wear mountains whose names are literally “breasts” on her, um, breasts?

  • Clash D

Two white stripes were okay; three is kinda overkill. Now I’m annoyed at it.

  • JynxTheCat

But at least she doesn’t look like she is going to murder someone like she usually does. But she;s making me miserable looking at it. Ugh.

  • Sam L

    Disagree, this is amazing!
