2014 BAFTA TV Tea Party Red Carpet Rundown

Posted on August 25, 2014

Darlings, let’s all go to a tea party. We’d write more of an introduction than that, but we’ve got to get started live-tweeting the Emmys red carpet soon.

Cat Deeley in Pamella Roland

She looks about as impressed with this dress as we do.

Laverne Cox in Valentina Kova

We give her all the credit in the world for moving so far outside her comfort zone, and we find it a little hilarious that she showed up dressed like a member of the royal family, but Girl? This is not your dress.

Joanne Froggatt in Altuzarra

Simple, but pretty.

We are getting mighty tired of looking at those shoes.

Lizzy Caplan in Cushnie et Ochs

She’s actually pulling this color off, which is quite the accomplishment.

Yes to the dress; absolutely NOT to the shoes.

Little Miss Shipka looks PERFECTLY age appropriate! LOVE!

      • Vegas Girl

Except the shoes. Not even Kiernan can be forgiven for the naked shoe. LOVE everything else, though!

        • Kimbolina

I wish she had more fun shoes. Same with her last look at the other pre-Emmy’s thing. She’s young, she can get away with something more fun and funky!

        • Laura F.

Yes, I’m wondering how she gets a pass on the hated naked shoes from TLo. Perhaps a little inconsistent favoritism?

          • Rhonda Shore

Actually i think the shoes and belt make a nice tie-in, where the matchiness works.

      • evave2

I was thinking because of her age it should have had straps. Nobody seems to agree (and I DO think the dress is awfully cute). I think that because she has become a real red carpet staple I have to force myself to remember she is 16, but since she is 16 I think she needed at least spaghetti straps.

But she does look so cute.

And she manages to maintain the proper level of enthusiasm thru all of her pictures. For some reason I don’t worry about this girl the way I do about all those little Disney chicks. She seems to be a solid person.

        • Sophie

Yes, didn’t one of the Fanning sisters get comments on this site because she draped a cardigan over a strapless dress? But then, Kiernan’s face is less round and she tends to get her hair done, which makes her look more mature.

        • charlotte

I agree with you. She isn’t even 16, she is 14.

          • evave2

Holy crap, I thought I read somewhere that she was 16. She is FOURTEEN. Oh, then add some sweet spaghetti straps for heaven’s sake.

            • teensmom99

What is this rule about teens & spaghetti straps?

            • fursa_saida

I don’t get it either. It doesn’t change how much skin is showing, so why…?

            • evave2

To ME the dress is complete and cute as it is; I cannot imagine a strap or shoulder that would make the dress better. So I am thinking spaghetti straps as being the least intrusive to the dress design. She looks so cute.

I would’ve have a problem letting my 14yo daughter out of the house strapless.

The dress does not look cheap or anything, this is no comment on the dress, I mean it. I guess because she is so young I think I need to protect her in some way?

Silly I know, I don’t know her and she DOES look wonderful.

            • teensmom99

Ah, okay. I have a 15 yo and I guess I’ve just gotten used to the fact that they dress pretty bare nowadays and it doesn’t mean much to them–or at least it doesn’t mean what it would have meant to me and my friends. But I have seen people refer to wearing spaghetti straps in the comments here as if all of you had some rule book I never got.
I actually think that Kiernan is at last dressing like her peers (if they had the money and the free clothes). Sometimes she has been too prissy and it doesn’t look anything like what girls dress like these days.

    • Jacquelyn

Lizzy Caplan is a goddess and you will not convince me otherwise.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

That is such a hard color to wear, and it is really working on Lizzy-well done!

        • evave2

I canNOT believe how she pulled off that color. She has an amazing ability to be “outside” but look so so cool she is “inside.”

      • Julie Ann

That dress is absolutely gorgeous on her. And, the shoes with it? So great. Her olive-y coloring and black hair are perfect for the look. I can’t imagine anyone else doing this as well.

      • decormaven

Love that dress. Wish stylist had done a better job on hem- a good pressing on hem might have fixed it.

    • semirose

I hope Shipka and Caplan were standing together in their yellow glory laughing at all the boring black and white.

    • Terri Terri

Doesn’t the hem of Lizzie’s dress need to be pressed? I see this poofy hem a lot, what is the deal? I must be out of the loop on something…

      • Sarah

Celebs are often not the right height for their borrowed dresses, so there will be a quickie fix that involves basting with thread or using tape (ala @Hughman) and no pressing lest it mar the dress before returning it.

        • travelgirl28

That may well be but it looks pretty awful. Kinda wrecks the look.

          • Sarah

            Definitely not a good look.

          • livesarah

I really wish they would just pony up and buy a dress. Even if it’s not a BIG designer, the pinned hem is a crappy look. Really cheap, and a bit desperate. If it doesn’t fit, find another dress.

        • pdquick

Defeats the purpose of loaning it out.

I rather think somebody thought, “Oh, yeah, that’ll be fine. It won’t show.”

    • hughman

Lizzy Caplan’s dress got a quicky, duct tape hem which means some Queen Stylist was pursing his lips and hissing “I TOLD YOU THIS IS THE LENGTH NOW!” at her assistant.

    • Sarah

Pulling the color off…maybe. The red hose, shoes, and pink clutch? NO.

      • Glam Dixie

God, I was having such a reaction to the dress and shoes that I didn’t even notice that pink clutch. More awful added onto the awful.

        • Sarah

          RED PANTYHOSE. I die.

      • marlie

I don’t think that’s hose. Just a bad spray tan maybe?

        • Sarah

If it is, it is the Worst Spray Tan Evah.

    • Glam Dixie

      Kiernan is perfection.
Laverne, the dress, the shoes, all of it is bad. Send it back, girl.
Lizzy, that color is hiddy and what is up with that hem? I hate that dress and I hate the red shoes with it. Awful.
Minnie Driver is looking pretty fab, I can’t even find it in me to hate the shoes. She looks fun, I want to sit with her.

      • FuhUgh

I LOVE what Minnie is wearing, including the shoes. That’s my favorite of this set, although I have no quibbles with any of them except Laverne Cox’s dress and shoes. I even like Kat Deeley’s dress.

      • demidaemon

Laverne looks like she stole that dress out of Blanche Deveraux’s closet. NOT GOOD.

      • verucaamish

Let’s give Laverne some credit for changing up the hairstyle. It looks amazing and really shows off her awesome bone structure.

    • bananafish

Joanne’s dress is office wear and she needs to pull her hair back. Live it up girl!

    • MilaXX

No real missteps here. Laverne’s look is not great, but I think it could have been saved with a better skirt. Perhaps a simple pencil skirt and a funky shoe. I love Minnie Driver’s dress and think the shoes work with it.

      • smh4748

I agree about Minnie Driver’s shoes. They are insane, but they’re sort of working for me. And while I don’t think things should get too many points solely for being “interesting,” I do like that they made me look twice in a sea of naked black shoes.

      • Kitten Mittons

Yes, I think the top is very flattering on Laverne. The skirt doesn’t suit her.

        • marlie

The fit in the top is a little weird. Maybe she needs a different bra?

          • Kitten Mittons

Perhaps. I do think the shape flatters her, though. I wouldn’t mind if she tried that silhouette again with some tweaks. And it’s a nice departure from the body con stuff. It’s probably my least favorite of her looks from today, but I still like the top half for her.

            • marlie

Her shoes are also tragic, but still, overall, it’s not bad.

            • Kitten Mittons

              Yes, shoes are not good.

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

I’m glad Laverne is trying different silhouettes!

    • sojourneryouth

LOVE Kiernan’s dress. I like that Laverne was trying a Miss Lady Ma’am outfit, but no, it doesn’t work. I don’t know why I don’t like Minnie’s dress, but something about it reads juvenile to me.

      • SugarSnap108

Yep, I see how Minnie’s dress “reads Junior,” as they say. But for some reason, it’s working for me anyway.

    • Liz

I LOVE Minnie Driver’s dress, I’m getting such a “we’re all mad here” vibe from it and how can you not love Wonderland on the red carpet? I kind of love the shoes too. It’s nice to see such fun pieces on the red carpet for a change.

    • Yoshio

Lizzy looks great here! And I love Minnie’s dress.

    • Adrianna Grężak

      Lizzy Caplan’s hem bugs

      • Lori

The fit of the bodice is also off. She’s working the color, but the tailoring is not good.

    • Imasewsure

Every single one of these women would have looked lovely in Kiernan’s dress… except Minnie – she should stay in the one she has on since it’s also adorable. No to all of the shoes here especially those (damn boring everywhere go away) naked shoes!!

    • frannyprof

Love Lizzy, hate Cat’s look and those naked shoes have got to go.

    • MK03

If Kiernan’s style team is reading this: PLEASE DRESS ME.

    • alyce1213

I’m watching the Emmys pre-show RC and Laverne Cox is SHUTTING IT DOWN in an elegant long white gown, perfect fit, with a chic, tasteful up-do. Can’t wait for T-Lo coverage.
I love Minnie’s dress and I ADORE the shoes. ADORE, I tell you. I would cut a bitch — does anyone know who made them? PLEASE!!

Kiernan hits it again, but I’d like a different shoe. She favors those and I disapprove, young lady.

      • SugarSnap108

I have the same question about Minnie’s shoes. There’s no chance in hell I can afford them, but those kicks are FABULOUS.

        • BLauDGaspode

          Pierre Hardy on the shoes

    • Punkinsmom

      1. that little Shipka girl is adorable. When she grows up and posts a grainy sex video online all of our heads will explode.
      2. I really really really want Laverne Cox to wear her hair up.
      3. Minnie’s shoes are kickass.

      • alyce1213

        2. She is tonight. Looks elegant.

      • kerryev

        1. Mine mini-exploded at the very mention. No, no, no.

    • amanda siegelson

i’d kill for a pair of minnie’s shoes. i’d have loved to have had even one ounce of kiernan’s poise and panache at her age… and now, quite frankly.

    • jif

Can someone identify Lizzy Caplan’s clutch?

      • BLauDGaspode

Michael Kors from what I can find on the Googles.

        • jif

          Thank you!

          • BLauDGaspode

            You’re welcome!

    • marlie

My favorites: Kiernan Shipka, Lizzy Caplan (except for the bad hem), Minnie Driver (except for the horrible shoes). This isn’t Lorraine’s dress, but there aren’t any serious WTF looks here.

    • PinkyK

Sally Draper (Kiernan Shipka) is killing it this award season! Adorable in every shot!

    • papillon

Kieran looks so fresh and adorable!

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I’m going out on a limb and say I love those shoes. I think the design is fun. But not with that dress.

    • Sanglots longs

Cat Deeley’s dress looks like a hybrid of a barber-pole and a bar code.

    • MaryMcClelland

Dang – Minnie Driver has not aged. And Lizzie looks beautiful.

    • SoAnnaPropriate

Aw, c’mon! Minnie’s shoes are awesome and perfect for the dress! Humbly submitted, of course.

    • Violentcello

Ms. Driver’s shoes are a little too mad-hatter.

      • ailujailuj

No one should ever wear that dress or those shoes. But I love it. I should prolly have another glass.

        • Joanna

I love it too, but that’s because Ms. Driver can do no wrong in my book.

    • ailujailuj

OMG I’ve missed this dishing… I am laughing at the strapstrap shoes—hilarious that they’re all wearing them. I was trying to put together something for a wedding this weekend and grabbed those exact shoes—but I bought them 8 yrs ago and was reminded that they were done. And miss Lizzy rocks.

    • Little_Olive

LOVE Lizzie’s dress. I’m even able to forgive the un-pressed hem.

    • Joanna

I have to ask . . . did Cat do something to her lips, or is it just her expression? I don’t remember them being so full.

    • pdquick

Good Lord! Why didn’t anyone press the hem on Lizzie Caplan’s dress?

    • Dagney

YES on Minnie’s shoes. Go home T-LO, you’re drunk.

    • Dagney

The hem on Lizzie Caplan’s dress? Really?

    • Clash D

I LIKE Minnie’s shoes! Not on her, though – and not with this dress.

    • PestoPhile

The amount of blacks we hold as celebrities is disgusting and serving as the degradation of society. Blacks are animals which is evident from their behaviour in Ferguson over a shooting that was justified and quite frankly the way that police should deal with all blacks….

    • livesarah

I say yes to Minnie’s shoes. Not under any other circumstances, but they actually suit the (excellent) dress. And they are not those stupid naked shoes, so… Win!

Laverne’s dress is a hopeful sign that she’s willing to step outside the bodycon zone and try new things, I hope. The dress doesn’t bug as much as those UGLY shoes.

Joanne Froggatt’s dress might be a PB, she almost always looks nice but something a little bit ‘off’, whereas this dress seems to suit her perfectly.

Lizzie Caplan’s pinned-up hem looks really bad.

    • RescueMe23

Can we burn the naked shoes? After, all it wouldn’t take long..

    • MarissaLG

1998 was a really great year for Minnie, so she’s sticking with the look.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

Kiernan is creeping into Lupita and Fan Bingbing territory. Soon we’ll have to give her a lifetime WERQ award.

    • Ann

Cat Deeley’s toes look confused… like they aren’t sure where they are supposed to be.

    • NBG

Kiernan, I’m deducting points for the shoes. We all know you can do better. (But your dress and hair are fab!)

    • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

      Bong sounds about right…

    • Mothra

Lizzy is rocking that crazy puce color, but not that craptacular hem.
