Tilda works her special Tilda-magic on yet another ensemble.

Because there ain’t no way a mere mortal without the benefit of magic fashion powers would ever be able to wear this without looking silly.

We can’t say this quite works, but she’s giving it her all. We think our main point of contention is the fit of the pants. All the credit to her for rocking the menswear in her inimitable androgyne style, but boypants aren’t cut like girlpants for obvious reasons. When you add a dropped crotch to the equation, what were designed to be dandy pants instead look like pop-pop pants.

Our second point of contention is that the two fabrics look like office upholstery; like something you’d see in a conference room. And it makes us a little sad to see her wearing a nude, suede shoe. But she presents a total look, we’ll give her that. There’s nothing half-assed about it. And it suits her perfectly. Like most Tilda ensembles, it’s head-turning in a “I’ve got to get a better look at this” way.

Bottom line? It’s Tilda.

  • I actually love the interplay between the two patterned textiles. Though I see your point, gents. She is always and ever TIlda, and really cannot completely fail, like, ever.

    • Pennymac

Agreed about the fabrics, but the pants closure looks unfinished. It’s making my right eye twitch. I’m shallow that way.

      • It looks to me as though its pulling just a bit across the waistband, and the strain is yanking the center front off of true. But yeah, that does bug.

  • Abi

I am captivated by it without really liking it if that makes any sense.

    • Pennymac

  • Mrs. Julien

I think of Haider Ackermann as “Tilda Swinton in Her Natural Environment”.

  • Kent Roby

Those are some rather fancy boy-pants, but no one, including Queen Tilda, needs to be going Hammer Time.

  • NMMagpie

This is where static photography cannot capture the full effect. The crotch issues aside, I bet this is stunning moving across the room.

  • Beardslee

I don’t care who she is. The crotch on those pants is just bad.

    • Sophie

It’s at least better than on the model, who just looks as though his legs are very very short. It could have been much worse on anyone else.

    • Daisy Walker

*insert Queen Tangerine “That crotch is insane!” gif*

  • MarissaLG

Everything is just a bit too big on her. Other than that it’s very chic and very Tilda.

  • FibonacciSequins

She needs to eat her Wheaties and get back to us tomorrow.

  • MoHub

I’ll take Tilda in menswear over Jared Leto in women’s wear any time, any day.

  • Anna

Every little thing she does is magic.

    • kimmeister

Dang it, I’ve going to be humming that all day now.

    • Thomas

Have you seen Snowpiercer? I just came back from it and she’s in it. It’s a Korean-American film about a train that perpetually circles the globe with the last humans alive after we cause the Earth to freeze when trying to prevent the global warming crisis. It’s a good movie, but very violent, and Tilda plays a very eccentric woman who’s supposed to keep the lower class in line. The fashion in the movie is very Hunger Games.

      • Anna

Never heard of it, but that sounds intriguing. Then again, I’d watch Tilda read the phone book.

I’ll have to check that out, thanks!

  • Alyssa

Love her, but those pants do not. If only they had been tailored, this could have been something else entirely. But men’s dropped crotch pants on a woman just look bad.

  • mjude

a dash of tilda in the morning is good for the soul.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Just seeing Tilda brightened my morning.

  • Jessica Freeman

    Nope, not even on Tilda.

  • RussellH88

    Tilda exists beyond criticism.

    • StrandedFashionista

You can discuss Tilda, you can even not like what she wears, but her SWINTON-ness makes it impossible to truly criticize what she wears.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I rarely feel the same Tilda love as other BK’s, so I’m not inclined to like or hate this outfit anymore than usual, I guess. (Top and jacket are great, hate the pants). But, I think we’d be tearing apart anyone else who had that hair and lip color in this light with the colors in this outfit.

    • FibonacciSequins

I just took another look at the lip color and I agree, not a great shade for her. Too orange. I love all the colors above the waist with her hair.

      • FuhUgh

I don’t mind the lip color – it’s that the hair color (or lack thereof) is too harsh. If she were rocking that beautiful red hair, or more strawberry blond, this lip color would be great. But that’s Tilda; she always pushes the zone.

  • @Biting Panda

Airport HoJo curtains never looked so Summery chic.

  • Haider Ackermann and Tilda Swinton are a match made in Heaven.

  • BarniClaw

And did she tuck in the blazer underneath the blazer? That’s some bold shit right there.

ETA: And has anyone seen Snowpiercer? I loved The Host, and I love that Octavia Spencer is in it…

    • WendyD

I’m seeing it on Friday and I’m ridiculously excited.

    • Violentcello

I really liked it. I don’t know how the director and producers resolved their disagreement on the running time, but I do feel like there were some scenes cut that might have answered some of the questions I had. But other than that it was great fun.

    • kimmeister

Yeah, I noticed the blazer under a blazer thing too.

    • jangma

I thought it was interesting, visually impressive, and socially conscious, but I wouldn’t say I *liked* it. I wasn’t really buying Chris Evans as the protagonist and the whole narrative left me cold (lol). I felt like the director was yelling, “THIS IS A METAPHOR! FOR SOCIETY! DO YOU GET IT YET???”

  • MilaXX

I like the look & don’t mind the nude shoe. My only quibble is the dropped crotch pant.

  • Lilithcat

Oh, I like those fabrics together! But the pants do need to be re-cut, and another pair of shoes chosen. But she looks fabulous, as only Tilda can.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I don’t like the pants on men or women- I think they’re terribly ugly- but I love everything else.

  • MartyBellerMask

I could forgive the pillow sham blouse when paired with the solid white jacket.
But the duvet cover MC Hammer Capris (who knew that was a thing??) are bridge way, way too far.

  • Denise Rambo

I’ll tell you … if I was a celebrity that needed a stylist, the first thing I’d tell them this season is “NO SUEDE SHOES!”

  • In_Stitches

Such is the power of Tilda that I find myself trying to defend those pants.

I love everything from the waist up. That jacket paired with that top…it’s such powerful, sexy androgyny.

  • bellafigura1

no it’s all feature, no bugs, she knows exactly what she’s doing, dropped crotches rule, man-repellers.

  • decormaven

The fit of the pant bugs, but I love the interplay of the color of the top against that fab jacket.

  • Wink

Apologies to those who love her, but she creeps me out. Always has. In the first pic, she looks like she’s about to peel off her “human” face and reveal that she’s really a giant reptile.

  • M_E_S

Tilda is always Tilda, but I’m feeling especially warm towards her because I just watched “Snowpiercer” and she was amazing. Everyone was amazing. That whole movie is amazing. GIVE IT ALL THE OSCARS.

  • crash1212

She’s rockin’ it. And I hate drop crotches. The shoe choice totally works with this outfit. It’s Tilda!

  • StrandedFashionista

Jared Leto and Tilda could have a gold pants party. Both the Chanel pair and these are nearly identical in color. Which would be awesome. I want to go to a gold pants party with those two now.

  • Laura Abrahamsen

I would like to see her with her hair forward, somewhat like the model’s. The slicked straight back look doesn’t enhance. Doesn’t detract, either, but only because it’s Tilda.

  • Mothra

I don’t like the fit around her waist and crotchal area.

  • Gatto Nero

The fit of the pants on the model bugs me a bit, too. But I think these colors and shapes (overall) are great on her.

I wish I had the stature and panache to throw on Haider Ackermann menswear separates and look this good.

  • Gatto Nero

I’m guessing she chose the nude suede shoe so as not to pull focus from the softly colored clothes. (I like the oxford on the model.) I wonder what the uncles would suggest instead?

  • MissusBee

The polterwang is strong on this this one. Otherwise gangbusters.

  • SewingSiren

Is she wearing a suit jacket tucked in as a blouse with another suit jacket on top? Points for sheer balls on that one.

  • Mary_Shelley

    I think she looks dumpy.

  • d4divine

    Tilda is queen!!

  • Sam Smith

    Pants are horrendous.

  • FifiDubois

On anyone else this would look ridiculous. How does she do it??? She’s amazing.

  • formerlyAnon

    She manages it.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s Tilda, once again demonstrating that she can wear an outfit that on mere mortals would not work. Yes, Tilda magic, indeed.

  • dash1211

It’s Tilda. She can wear what she wants. Otherworldly style.

    • Shawn EH

      And she fixed the hems!

      • dash1211

        She did indeed. Brava!

  • suzq

She should have known ahead of time the fit was going to be screwy. Look at the fit on the model! That’s atrocious! The prints are awesome, however. I would have loved to see her mix all three.

  • I like the colors and patterns, but the fit is off.

  • Imasewsure

I can live with everything except the shoes….not loving the hair color either but that might be the lighting…

  • I kind of just want to ditch the white jacket. She’s already wearing a jacket as a top, tucked into her pants. The white one is unnecessary.
The pants remind me of a gold suit I passed on at an upper east side thrift store that I forever regret not purchasing.

  • JauntyJohn

I worship The Tilda, but I’m sorry… the fit on those pants is just dire, purposeful styling or no.

    • Hillary Frasier Hays

Are you a member of ‘The Tildren’ Facebook group, John? She is ‘Mother’ and we who are excessively devoted to her are her ‘Tildren’. It’s a little odd perhaps, but for those of us who have a serious Tilda Problem, it’s a great group to join.

  • somebody blonde

God, if only the crotch weren’t dropped. I’d think it were perfect otherwise.

  • marlie

TILDA!! I like the pants and the shirt, but not together. The colors aren’t working for me. But, TILDA.

  • TinyDynamo

I wish I could see this in better lighting. But still, I love it. She’s so unconcerned with what “should be” and is just herself. For that alone, I love everything she does.

  • anonylind

I actually like the fabrics quite a bit.

  • Miss wks

    DANG….girl is HUNG.

  • PeaceBang

J’adore the outfit except for the silly crotch, but I so wish her hair wasn’t that shade of orange/yellow.

  • Kevin Lewis

I would so watch the laff-a-minute sitcom “It’s Tilda!”

  • Linderella

I love that the male model is so obviously styled to look like Tilda.
Points for effort, but the bad fit of the trousers ruins the attempt.

  • Cousin_Rose

I think it would be a work if she had treat the greenish shirt as a double jacket by wearing it outside of the pants. She wore something like that in a winter look once that I thought was fab.

  • Michelle Lim

Perfection. Though she needs to get it tailored to fit her lady parts.

  • quiltrx

I actually like the fabrics. If not for the goofy crotch, I could totally live with this.

  • livesarah

Well, grandpa can at least accommodate his adult diapers with ease in those pants. Awful.

  • Kimberlini

I feel in need of some magical accessories to make this right for Miss Swinton.

  • Columbinia

Nah. Almost, but nah. All it’s got going for it are the flattering colors.

  • Danielle

    And the Swintonites said “Amen”.

  • Hillary Frasier Hays

Are any of you members of The Tildren Facebook group? I love it very much. There we call Tilda “Mother” as we are her “Tildren” 🙂 May sound a little odd to some of you, but for those of us who excessively adore Ms. Swinton, it works. My adoration for her led me to get my hair cut like her (except my hair is dark brown). You can’t tell perfectly in my profile photo, but the lady who did my hair literally “studied” many different photos of Tilda to make sure she was getting it right. Sigh. How about we have a ‘I Love My Tilda Hair’ group?
