Nicole Beharie at EW’s 2014 Comic-Con Celebration

It’s interesting to track the style trajectory of an actress who finds herself on a hit TV show unexpectedly. They all start off pretty damn shaky, but sometimes you get a Julianna Margulies or Julia Louis-Dreyfus; the type of stars who eventually blossom on the red carpet. A lot of the time, however, you get your Jennifer Morrisons, who never seem to get it right and half the time give the impression that they’re sick of trying.

We’re hoping Miss Nicole is of the Margulies/Louis-Dreyfus persuasion in the long run. Because right now, she’s a very pretty lady who doesn’t seem to understand the importance of finishing details for red carpet outfits.

The outfit’s basic, but cute on her. We can work with it, even if it’s not our favorite thing ever. But it definitely needs some styling. The shoes are really awful. She needs something with a little color and personality on her feet. We’d also suggest a cuff or bangle of some sort. But the most important thing she can do right now to help this look is to get one of those long-stemmed candle-lighters, find her hair and makeup team, and set them all on fire. Mother of pearl, that is some janky-ass hair.
