Lea Michele on the Set of “Sons of Anarchy”

Posted on July 30, 2014

Well, this is totally unexpected.

Lea-Michele-Son-Anarchy-Set-TV-Show-Costume-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Lea Michele is spotted in full costume for the first time filming scenes for her guest appearance on the hit TV show “Sons Of Anarchy” in Acton, California. Lea will be playing a character named Gertie, a truck stop waitress and single mom who becomes friends with Gemma, played by Katey Sagal.

We wondered what all those Glee kids were going to be doing now that the show’s coming to an end. Of all the things we could’ve predicted for Lea (shitty rom-coms, shitty sitcoms, concert tour, reality show, obscurity), getting a job as a waitress didn’t even occur to us. If we were less reputable sorts, we’d plaster this all over the internet with a “DOWN ON HER LUCK FORMER TV STAR FORCED TO WAIT TABLES!” headline. Oh, hell. Let’s do it.

She smokes?

I just don’t understand people like Lea who only eat vegan raw vegetables smoothies and then smoke?! Like… what?

      • Emily Giovanni

pretty sure she is acting, hon. the character smokes.

        • SewingSiren

Yep. Vintage cafe coffee cup ruins the authenticity..

        • Karen Belgrad

Agreed… if she were smoking on a break, she’d have her phone. :) That’s the character.

          • Emily Giovanni

I also don’t think Lea is that slouchy in real life.

        • sutton

All the characters smoke on this show, and I am not 100% on this but I think she was actually photographed a little while ago actually smoking.

        • KateShouldBeWorking

Has to be acting; I can’t see her upper upper thigh.

          • Imasewsure

            Or her sternum

        • leahpapa

Yeah, that last shot is pure Truckstop Waitress in Repose, also known as Exit 238 ennui.

      • zoiperry

Also this just reeks of fox-in house trying to rebrand a star from a show no one watches anymore.

      • Denise Alden

        It’s all about balance! :)

      • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Smoking helps control the appetite when one only eats raw vegetables. #LA

      • leilah

Google “Lea Michele s” and “Lea Michele smoking” will be one of the options … there are lots of photos capturing/catching her smoking.

      • berkeleygirl

Not to mention what smoking does to the vocal chords… Guess she’s now a Serious Actor, rather than a Serious Singer…

    • Kim Elmore

that’s all I can think: smoking????? And, if she gets to have a sex scene with CH I will die from jealousy

    • moppet

Good for her for hopefully stretching herself professionally, and taking a role against type.

      • Wink

Although she can be grating at times, she is very talented. I wish her all the best for a long and successful career!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

One brand of water with contractual obligation and one brand without?

      • FrigidDiva

Glad I’m not the only one that noticed that.

      • MilaXX

I think the first is a soda.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Probably! It’s a similar shape to the plastic bottles of Perrier that we get over here.

        • lundibleu

You’re probably right, but it does seem very consciously covered up by her phone though.

    • FrigidDiva

It’s been interesting reading the comments on any articles about Lea Michele guest starring on SOA. Most die-hard fans aren’t pleased and in a snit that some Glee starlet is going to be on the show. I don’t really see the big deal, Ashley Tisdale was on a couple of seasons ago playing a call girl–gotta dirty up that good-girl, Disney type image with a “grittier” role. Lea even managed to find a character that SMOKES–oooh the ACTING!

      • sutton

I am one of the viewers who while finding it an odd stunt casting move also remembers that both Ashley Tisdale’s episode and Joel Mchale’s appearances did not matter all that much compared to the hype around them. It is the final season and so much stuff has to happen they just do not need to be throwing in random characters and guest stars who are not going to move the plot along as history has shown with this show. Also this just reeks of fox-in house trying to rebrand a star from a show no one watches anymore.

        • Emily Giovanni

Pretty sure Stephen King was also on it in a stunt-y role. This sort of move is not outside the SOA wheelhouse at all.

          • Vegas Girl

I loved the Stephen King guest role! He was weird & creepy. I don’t like this one, but that just my own bias against this girl. I’ve never watched Glee, so I can’t even comment on her capability – she just bugs me for some reason. I actually think it’s seeing the way she dresses on here that makes me not like her…

        • FrigidDiva

Have to agree about all the guest-stars that are being thrown in for the last season. There’s enough for Sutter to do storywise without having to have a guest star for every episode, although I won’t be upset to see Venus if she makes a return.

          • sutton

I love Venus she is the only one I am excited about. The Venus/Tig weird little romance turned out to be a wonderful side story they have going on,

        • @Biting Panda

          This.
I have strong feelings on this upcoming season. So far, there have been 3 instances of stunt casting and I’m already irritated.

          • ShaoLinKitten

Girl. I am wavering in my decision not to watch this season. Who are the other two stunt casts?

    • Betsy

I’ll give it a try but I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to suspend my disbelief for this one. Why must she infiltrate? Next thing you know she’ll be on Orange is the New Black.

      • GorgeousThings

Yeah, but maybe she’ll get killed off in her second guest ep.

    • Anna

Rachel’s pilot gets cancelled, she moves to Charming and hooks up with Jax Teller.

      • ShaoLinKitten

If she goes the way of Jax’s other paramours, well… the Rachel haters would be delighted, I guess.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

I’m always surprised by the amount of Hollywood celebrities who smoke. It’s always jarring to see, even if it’s just acting in the role like Lea’s doing here.

    • MilaXX

Smoking is an appetite suppressant and since Hollywood is so weight obsessed a LOT of them smoke.

      • Thomas

Is that why so many models, both male and female, smoke as well?

        • marlie

Just to get my nerd on for a second, that’s one of the leading reasons why teenage girls smoke, which differs from the reasons why teen boys smoke.

          • Thomas

Thanks for the info! Though I wouldn’t be surprised if male models smoke a lot too as an appetite suppressant considering the waif look is used by a lot of brands these days, like Prada for example.

            • marlie

Oh, absolutely. I’m sure male models do whatever they have to do to stay on top of the game, whether it be smoking or steroids or whatever, depending on their ‘look.’ I used to do a lot of research on adolescent risk behaviors, and the key takeaway was that interventions can’t be one-size-fits-all because you have to address the different reasons *why* kids do those things.

            • Thomas

You sound like a smart cookie!

            • MilaXX

Completely agree, but I was referring to celeb life.

            • marlie

Oh I know; my point was only that a LOT of people – not just celebrities – use smoking to control their weight.

          • MilaXX

In real life, yes. In Hollywood the need to be skinny becomes the great equalizer

        • MilaXX

          yep coffee & cigs.

      • fursa_saida

I’m only surprised at Lea because she’s a singer. (Lots of singers smoke anyway–Adele at least used to smoke very heavily–but different kinds of singing are less forgiving than others, and the Broadway style is…very unforgiving. No room for a bluesy rasp there.)

    • Anapestic

If you’re going to go that route, go all the way: “Down on Her Luck Former TV Star Forced To Wait Tables To Fund Nicotine Addiction.

I’ve always liked her, but even I get that she manages her image too carefully to be seen smoking. It’s obviously for a role. Also, I doubt she’d do anything that would put her voice at risk.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I find it interesting that Grant Gustin seems to be the one who is really breaking out. I’m a little sad that Karofsky didn’t move into bear porn.

      • Jarethee

That sounds like a job for Kickstarter!

        • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I am trying my hardest to resist coining the gay porno movie name version of Kickstarter.

    • Sobaika

This is… interesting. She’s a talented actor but something about her reads very ‘colgate’ – I really wonder if she’ll be able to pull this off.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Jennifer Aniston did that movie as a shop assistant & that seemed to be quite well regarded. I agree about the Colgate though!

        • frannyprof

Agree about Jen. Did you see “The Good Girl?” She plays a very ordinary, borderline white trash character and did it very well.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

No – I just remember hearing about it. I think We are the Millers is the only post-Friends work of hers I’ve seen!

            • Shawn EH

Go to Horrible Bosses, now! She’s a great villainess!

          • Vegas Girl

She was in Derailed and that movie was amazing! I always thought that movie didn’t get the box office recognition it deserved. Even is she is not your cup of tea, Clive Owen is so awesome in it.

          • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

I felt the same about Nicole Kidman’s character in “The Paperboy”.

    • Thomas

I think she needs to give up on the dream of being a pop star and just perform on Broadway. Her voice and music don’t have enough personality for pop and I don’t see her ever being a pop stat, but she has a big voice that would be perfect for Broadway.

      • ThaliaMenninger

You don’t think you need a personality for Broadway? Because fans of Barbra, Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Robert Preston, Audra McDonald, Tommy Tune, Angela Lansbury, Nathan Lane, Sutton Foster, Patti Lupone, Laura Benanti, Harvey Fierstein and Mary Louise Parker might disagree with you.

        • Thomas

I’m not saying that you don’t need to have a personality. The person definitely needs to have a personality and I think Lea has that. I’m saying that your voice doesn’t necessarily have to have tons of personality. You just need to be able to hit the big notes. Her pop music has no personality to it whatsoever, but her acting does.

          • GoodGollyMissMolly

I totally agree with you. I think it’s 1000% more important to have a voice with personality on Broadway than in pop music. Even some of the best aren’t particularly wonderful singers, but the vibe of their voices are so unique and character-esque that they don’t need to be perfect. And the idea that a Broadway star only needs to hit the big notes? It’s a little insulting to be honest. Broadway stars need far more personality and range compared to pop stars who can put out endless similar hits in the same genre and have a career. Think Katy Perry vs. Idina Menzel. Most of Katy Perry’s music has the same loud, bold, and poppy sound to it with very few soft ballads thrown in. Though Menzel is particularly famous for her biggest performances (i.e. Defying Gravity and Let it Go) take a listen to the original cast recordings of “I’m Not That Girl” and “For Good”. Both are surprisingly soft and powerful, but still full of Menzel’s amazingly unique tone and personality. Every show has these songs, meaning that it is necessary for a Broadway singer to be able to nail both styles, while a pop singer only needs to be able to do their niche.

      • somebody blonde

Actually, I think you might have it the wrong way around. About half the pop stars out there seem to have fantastic, interesting voices, and the other half have completely generic, could be absolutely anyone voices. I’m pretty sure on Broadway, your voice matters a lot more than it does in pop music, where persona and producers tend to matter a lot more.

        • Thomas

She has a big voice, but it just doesn’t have much personality to it. Even so, I think she would be more successful on Broadway because of her acting which has personality to it. I think that could help hide the lack of personality to her voice whereas with the pop music, there’s no acting to help hide it. It didn’t help that the music she released was terribly bland itself though.

          • somebody blonde

I’m just saying, I think it’s the quality of the songs she’s been singing that holds her back in pop, because most pop singers really don’t have voices with personality. I mean, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Becky G, Taylor Swift… none of those girls have distinctive voices. But the songs written for them are hits. I really don’t think it has anything to do with voice quality, especially when you have stars like Kesha (and Britney, long ago) whose completely lackluster voices are so autotuned that they mostly sound like autotune and not like anyone’s particular voice.

            • Thomas

That’s true. As I said, her songs are so bland they could put me to sleep if her voice wasn’t so loud. There’s nothing particularly catchy or memorable about them. I suspect she got a lot of leftovers from other artists. And yeah, none of those girls you mentioned have distinctive voices. I just don’t see Lea’s pop career going anywhere though. People also have to be invested in your image and a lot of people find her annoying.

            • somebody blonde

Yeah, totally agree with you there. Also, I think it’s pretty hard for an actress to go into singing, rather than the other way around. I’m really not sure why, but I can’t think of very many people who’ve managed it.

            • mlle

I think it’s that being an actress is seen as a step up the totem pole from being a singer, the way being in movies is a step up from being on tv. The perception is that someone who’s already at the higher level is dabbling.

            • somebody blonde

That definitely seems to be the case, but it seems very strange, since the biggest singers are definitely more important in the culture than most TV actors.

      • demidaemon

My mom apparently hears her new single all the time at work and pretty much hates it. I haven’t heard it yet, but I do already fear it is not that great.

    • frannyprof

I hopehopehope the cig is for the scene? If not…

    • http://www.redriverhistorian.com texashistorian

Bad idea, becoming friends with Gemma. Don’t let her near you with a carving fork.

    • Alloy Jane

I’m pretty sure she’s in character for that smoking scene. If she isn’t, she obviously doesn’t expect to keep her voice for long. I really doubt she smokes, I can’t imagine her people would allow that.

    • Terry

“Lea will be playing a character named Gertie, a truck stop waitress and single mom who becomes friends with Gemma, played by Katey Sagal.”

Well, that’s not going to go well for Gertie.

    • Zeee

I never noticed before. But Leah’s got a lot of teeth.

    • marlie

Well, she’s got the crappy waitress uniform thing down. And ditto “she smokes?”

    • KT

Hilarious, I love the shot of her glaring at the camera, taking a drag, all the while dressed as a truckstop waitress. But in all honesty, I think it was actually a smart move to put her in something like this, where she’s not coming off as pretentious or SUPER GLAM.

    • PinkyK

Mel’s Diner Realness! Kiss my grits indeed!

      • GemFemme

        Oh Flo!

    • Betsy

I expect she and Katey Sagal will break into song during a fantasy sequence.

    • @Biting Panda

      I. Am. So. Fucking. Pissed.

    • Jeff Warhurst

Is it bad that I think she looks more like a waitress in real life than when she’s acting the part of a waitress?

    • deech_sea

“She smokes?” Doesn’t everyone in SoA?

    • evave2

I really LOVE her for taking a part as a waitress. It would be worth watching the show which is cool enough. I am surprised they don’t have her in a hairnet. I would love that even more.

    • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

I kept hoping that you would say that this was all some cruel joke, and then we would have laughed and laughed.

    • Man Dala

Of all the options you’ve given I’m inclined towards OBSCURITY. I’m not sure that anyone other than Ryan Murphy likes her in the industry. I never understood his fascination with her.

    • Nick Pilgrim

Next up on Bravo, Barbra Does Zabars.

    • ktr33

      1) Impressively vanity-free costuming. 2) she smokes????!!! Gross. Sorry.

    • mousetomato

She’s looking very Penelope Cruz in that last shot.

    • amanda lynn

I get so angry when people with good voices smoke – and screw up their voices. Keep what you have! Don’t kill it so obviously.

    • GoodGollyMissMolly

I instantly lose a little bit of respect for any singer that smokes. Though I don’t consider Lea Michele to be insanely talented, she’s got a powerful set of pipes. Why ruin it with something as arbitrary as smoking? Seriously though, if your career rests on your voice, why would you do the one thing that is almost guaranteed to ruin it?
