Kristen Wiig for ELLE Magazine

Posted on July 16, 2014

Wow. Kudos to the fine folks at ELLE because Miss Kristen has NEVER looked this good.

Kristen-Wiig-ELLE-August-Issue-2014-Christopher-Kane-Marc-Jacobs-Vera-Wang-Magazine-Editorial-Cover-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)“The Skeleton Twins” and “Welcome to Me” actress Kristen Wiig covers the August 2014 issue of ELLE magazine photographed by Carter Smith shot at the Grey Gardens estate in East Hampton.

On being categorized as a comedian: “It’s not necessarily a bad thing. You have to have some sort of context for a person to register in your brain, and I was introduced to the world as a cast member of ‘SNL.’ But I’ve always wanted to do dramatic stuff, to write and direct, do a lot of different things. Comedy is where my heart lies, but there’s also something really satisfying about being able to step away with a small crew, become a character and get to know her for a few months at a time.”

On getting naked in “Welcome to Me”: “I’d never read a character like that. I got to a scene where it read, ‘She’s fully naked,’ and I remember thinking, ‘If I do this movie, I have to do this scene, because it’s really important to this script.’”

She always seemed to have such a tentative, occasionally problematic relationship with fashion. We always assumed that, like a lot of comic women, she needed some convincing on the whole style front; as if she never quite considered it worth her time. Looks like ELLE managed to convince her. We don’t see how she can look at these pics and not see her style potential. We really love the relaxed confidence on display in that cover shot, but what shocks us here is how well she’s handling a lot of really tricky dresses or dramatic dresses.

And her hair looks fabulous. That’s a great cut for her.

She owes Elle a fruit basket.

    • WendyD

The shot in the Marc Jacobs dress is stunning.

      • Little_Olive

She certainly is making the dress sing, but I’m not enjoying her face expression. She looks genuinely worried.

        • http://www.merradywickes.wordpress.com/ MissWix

          Don’t make me sing!

    • rhône

that last shot made me gasp. i love her so much.

    • Sarah

Tricky dresses that look even better on her than the runway, I dare say. Heck yeah!

      • David Kresner

In each instance she outshines the runway model/version/styling.

    • Thomas

Hate the Marc Jacobs dress, but I have to say, that Christopher Kane dress is REALLY cool. It’s like art.

      • kimmeister

The Christopher Kane is styled better than anyone had the right to ever expect from it!

    • Alyssa

The dresses featured are totally editorial-style dresses. I don’t care much for them on the runway, but they look really good in the pictures. Love her haircut!

    • marlie

Kristen looks pretty great in all of these shots. She’s making that Christopher Kane – and the Vera Wang – work like nobody’s business.

    • KT

She looks great. I do love the cut, but I’m actually not crazy about that color. Wish it was a little darker, or had more dimension to it.

      • Tuneful54

Agree, I preferred the redhead thing she had going.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Nice to see the discussions about dramatic acting go along with dramatic photos. Very canny; I’m a fan.

    • MilaXX

That hair cut and color is perfect for her. Kudos to the stylist for this shoot. She looks beautiful! Please hire this person.

      • decormaven

Truly. This is a personal best for her. So glad!

    • quiltrx

Wow, she looks great! And those inside pictures? If someone asks me to explain what clothes that are “very editorial” are, I will point them to this spread.
I love that they treated her as a model instead of “generic ‘funny actress’ sportswear.”

      • FibonacciSequins

This spread is a superb illustration of ‘editorial’.

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

I love the overturned chairs at the picnic table one. Just a hint of a recent disaster she’s meditating on now, the lone survivor.

        • Leah Elzinga

          Gray Gardens realness, amirite?

        • AthenaJ

Reminds me of the part in Bridesmaids when she goes berserk and starts trashing the bridal shower… definitely a hilarious scene!

    • Anna

DAMN. She looks sexy as hell on the cover. I love the shot of her with the parasol, she looks airborne, it’s fantastic. She’s even working Christopher Kane’s stack of folded chiffon napkins.

    • judybrowni

She even makes that 1,000 dinner napkins dress look good.

      • Thomas

Had the same thought about it looking like dinner napkins. I love it though because it’s so architectural.

    • Shawn EH

She’s doing what she’s supposed to: acting her way through her photo shoot!

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

She is a different yet fully realized character in every photo. Although the first one looks the most fun, I can think of a reason to phone each of these gals depending on my mood.

    • d4divine

She looks great! Joe Zee does it again!

    • Kent Roby

Who knew that James Franco’s recent outfit would end up on the cover of Elle? Kristen looks fantastic; I, too, am surprised how well she’s able to carry those tricky dresses, especially that crazy Christopher Kane.

      • Jacob Bowen

That Christopher Kane vagina-esque dress is ridiculous…but she is TOTALLY punking James Franco with that cover shot…Bitch Stole His Look.

        • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

          Your vagina has corners?

    • Crystal

      That hair is PERFECTION.

    • Danielle

The Marc Jacobs is singing on her.

    • Capt. Renault

Wow. What took her so long?

    • BrianaJC

Loving the hair and the last picture is fabulous. The second pic, though, is very ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ asking rhetorical questions and contemplating life.

    • Tricia Rose

I love that Christopher Kane dress stylized! On the model it was clanky and weird, in the shot it’s magical and literally unfolds in front of you! Who Styled/Art Directed these shots!?! Totally Gasp-Worthy!

      • whaddami

absolutely — that Kane dress looks crazy hard to wear. She’s rocking some very, very tricky frocks here…..and who knew she could pull off romantic and wistful? Whole other side of her emerging here — I’m loving it.

    • SewingSiren

I like this it has kind of a Ghosts of the Mississippi vibe.

    • mjude

      she just looks fab!

    • Gatto Nero

Absolutely love the hair, and her ease in carrying some of these wild clothes. Great art direction. There’s a story and an atmosphere here. Well done.
The Elle people should style her all the time.

    • BlairBear

She looks so young and fresh here! Also Elle should change careers and become a stylist corporation. They have a great track record of making stars who get it wrong on the red carpet look really great without losing their personality quirks. If I was a celebrity I would have Elle on my speed dial

    • Let it out

She’s channeling Patti Smith in that cover shot. Yes please.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

She looks great on the cover, but not very interesting, then she pulls out major dress-wearing chops in the rest of the pics. Well done Carter Smith, for bringing this out of her!

    • FibonacciSequins

The edgy rocker look on the cover really suits her. Love the haircut!

    • msdamselfly

I’ve heard her say in interview that she really loves fashion. She’s a former art student.
That Vera Wang outfit is gorgeous.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Was this styled by Joe Zee? It’s so creative and well-executed.

    • prettybigkitty

      Oh honey, you’re a model!

    • BLauDGaspode

That Kane dress is all kinds of weird, and yet Kristen is working it far better than the model. It looks like the model got caught in a windstorm through a napkin factory, but not so for Kristen. That’s amazing to me.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Thank God she lost the bomber jacket and combat boots that the Marc Jacobs model wore…..that dress is one of the few deployments of cutouts and illusion netting I’ve seen that actually works. And the Christopher Kane dress is beyond gorgeous. I don’t know him (Kane) at all—is he a new(ish) designer on the scene, or am I just woefully underinformed?

    • Jacqueline Wessel

      wow…she looks so good here.

    • Anapestic

She looks great, but those are some seriously wack clothes they put her in. The Kane makes me think of Maya Rudolph’s unfortunate wedding dress in Bridesmaids, and the Marc Jacobs dress is just ridiculous (though, credit where it’s due, she looks way better in it than the model does). I love the Vera Wang, even if the picture does make me want to shout, “Don’t jump!” Great cover shot, too.

    • conniemd

She’s wearing clothes which are the very definition of “editorial clothes and looking really good in them.

    • girliecue

Wow! She even pulled off wearing The Mother Of All Folded Napkins dress! I thinks she’s ready for an advanced degree in fashionology. I love that it took wearing daring and difficult dresses for her to blossom as a fashion flower. That shows some serious character.

    • SC_in_DC

That Christopher Kane looks like what all Project Runway napkin dresses aspire to be!

    • Wink

She looks great. Love the hair.

    • Laughingworld

The cover outfit looks like a successful version of the one on James Franco elsewhere on this page.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Love that Christopher Kane dress on Kristen-and that’s a tricky little number. She should have the Elle folks who styled and shot this on speed dial for consultation.

    • Michelle Gennari

The best she’s ever looked. Great, great hair!

    • Marcella Cypher

That Christopher Kane dress looks like lunch meat the model…

    • kimmeister

She’s built like a model, isn’t she? Looks great. I only dislike the way her cleavage was handled on the cover. Looks smooshed and super unnatural.

      • AthenaJ

There may be some photoshopping going on there, from what I remember she doesn’t naturally have a lot of cleavage.

    • http://www.robertjamesfischer.tumblr.com Theda

Sooo tired of the nudity questions in actresses interviews.

      • BlairBear

at least they didn’t ask her how its possible she could enjoy life without being married and having kids and baking cookies at every opportunity she gets.

    • Mothra

That flowery Marc Jacobs number gives her a very Daisy Buchanan look. Her hair and make up give her a very Jennifer Aniston look.

    • luluransom

Every one of these is a great shot for different reasons. Love the Mark Jacobs because, pretty toes. But the one with the parasol is the standout of the bunch. Kudos all around.

    • Mrs. Julien

She looks great and that chintz couch is to die for.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Totally agree! This is frickin’ fabulous and hope it helps her up her style game.

    • frannyprof

I love her in the Christopher Kane.

    • Watts

Did anyone else think from the thumbnail this was Jen Aniston with a fresh haircut?

    • Paula Pertile

      Wow, yeah.

    • Jacob Bowen

That shot of her in the Vera Wang is STUNNING. SO BEAUTIFUL! I want it framed on my wall.

    • RutGot

I thought that was a really young Patricia Arquette for a minute.

    • roverrun

She’s staunch…STAUNCH (okay fellow bitter kittens, you best know what that’s a reference to)

    • stubbornthoughts

Dying over that Kane dress. O-M-G.

    • Joycelyn Watterson-Woods

Bravo! That cover shot is gorgeous, she looks badass and beautiful. I never thought I’d like the Marc Jacobs dress but she is making it work. Great detailing with it.

    • GeoDiva

      Love the Christopher Kane shot!

    • ShaoLinKitten

She looks better than the model in all pics, and the cover is amazing. I always thought she was pretty but made horrible fashion choices, like Rashida Jones. Finally she looks her best. Hooray!

    • Alloy Jane

My favorites are the cover and the Vera Wang shot. It’s very Mary Poppins meets Miyazaki.

    • crash1212

Wow. Whodathunkit? She looks fab. Hope she translates these amazing looks/fashion into her real life. That is a great cut for her.

    • Michelle Lim

      GREAT styling!!

    • http://msavonelljrose.blogspot.com Avonell

Wow. She’s take a good picture.

    • Bozhi

I don’t know, if I were her I would look at those pictures and think “OMG I look great in jeans.”

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

The “telephone white pages” dress..……want to see the “yellow pages” version!

    • Dino Bonačić

I don’t think she was ever affraid of fashion – I just always found her searching for a right approach towards red carpets and public appearances. She’s a stunner – talented, beautiful, funny and seems extremely nice.

ps. Her Met Gala Balenciaga outfit was something I really loved <3

    • Sam Smith

So lovely, she is really beautiful great to see her like this.

    • RescueMe23

The Christopher Kane dress is my favorite look..

    • Martha Anderson

I love the stories the photos are telling

    • Jaeda Laurez

The haircut is great, and the dresses are perfect for this sort of thing, but she looks perfect on the cover. As I figured, she’s a jeans and tee gal. That’s her happy place.

    • Not applicable

She’s got the bod for these looks- she just needed to be shown the way, I think. love her.

    • Joanna

While she looks pretty damn good, I honestly thought this was Jennifer Aniston at first.

    • Tami from Seattle

      Nice labia dress!

    • Sara Brams-Miller

Talk about rocking a garment that doesn’t seem to be rocked by the model – that Christopher Kane dress looks incredible in that shot.

    • Kristi Mitchell

I want that couch she’s lounging on!

    • unbornfawn

She looks fabulous. She needs to hire whoever styled her here, for red carpet events.

    • DominoEstella

her hair look fantastic! I wish that hadn’t done the whole the whole push up thing with her boobs on the cover. Push up bra + casual t & jeans is really tacky and so unnecessary.

    • gsk241

I find her (and every character I’ve ever seen her portray) annoying in the extreme. However, I think she looks great here.

    • JynxTheCat

      Wow. VERY nice.

    • Baghag

i thought it was Aniston at first!

    • largishbearishAtlish

Stunning, the Christopher Kane dress could have gone so wrong.. but amazing what she does to it. I too always thought of her as tentative…but she OWNS it here. Great job….lets see what Vogue can do with her. I look forward to seeing her on the red carpet now- in something this amazing!
