Keira Knightley in Simone Rocha at “Begin Again” London Photocall

Posted on July 07, 2014

Lately, we’re just not feeling the tricky dresses on Miss Keira, who has long demonstrated a facility for wearing them. Could it be that she’s lost her tricky-dress mojo? Or are we just over them generally?

Or maybe it’s the fact that the skirt appears to be detaching from the bodice right in front of everyone. Seriously, what IS that? How could anyone send her out in front of cameras with that giant, flesh-colored gap on her stomach? It’s a shame, because that’s a really pretty fabric, but man, is that a dowdy-looking shape. Everything from her waist down just plain looks awkward. That skirt looks like she got it caught in a car door or something. And the shoes look like something a chorus girl in 1933 would wear with a pair of satin bloomers. Then there’s the flesh-colored lining that just stops 12 inches above the skirt hem. Weird. It all looks way better on the model, which shouldn’t be all that surprising, since most clothes look better on models, but Miss Keira has always been model-level in her dress-wearing skills. Either she’s not feeling this one (for which we don’t blame her) or she’s getting rusty.

I think it’s because she looks so over the photographing. I mean, she looks like she really would rather be anywhere else, doing anything else.

  • Kristi Mitchell

Wow – that dress looked GORGEOUS in the Women of Downton Abbey editorial. Then again, we couldn’t see the awful waistline of it either, but still. Just goes to show how different a garment can look on the right wearer.

    • FibonacciSequins

Who wore it in that editorial?

      • Kristi Mitchell

        Daisy aka Sophie McShera.

    • gabbilevy

It’s only because Sophie McShera is posed to hide all the weirdness at the waist, otherwise, I think it would have looked odd on her too. It’s just a strange choice from the designer.

      • conniemd

I think you are right. Sometimes clothes are “editorial” which means that they look good posed in a certain setting with the ability disguise design flaws, photoshop issues, perfect lighting, etc. Here it is exposed in full view of its hideousness. As I recall the Downtown Abbey, it didn’t look dull or drab, which I believe is a function of the photography and not KK’s ability to wear it.

    • Kent Roby

I think it has less to do with who is wearing the clothes, and more with the fact that many clothes can be shown in such a way in editorials to make them look much better than in real life.

      • Imasewsure

Which is how Nina Garcia got to pass forward some of the awful designs she deemed “editorial” season after season… 🙂

        • bitchybitchybitchy

This Bitter Kitten is still waiting (in vain, I know) for Ms. Garcia to actually wear granny panties in public, after the Gretchen season of PR.

          • evave2

I was trying to remember Gretchen’s name! I think two ladies were wearing Michael Costello designs to an award show last month shown here and I remember thinking, his stuff isn’t innovative BUT he knows how to make women look/feel beautiful and THAT is a talent as well. I was trying to remember who won because I sure haven’t heard anything from her. Michael made a really good decision to be on the show because he showed non-innovative beautiful clothes (remember he won the Philip Treacy hat competition and Ivy was SO PISSED). THAT particular season was interesting in that Gretchen won (and I haven’t seen anybody on the award circuit wear her), Ivy was always raving about her sewing skills and just bugged the daylights out of me, And Michael Kors and Nina Garcia just praising Gretchen to the HEAVENS. I still love Mondo.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I know that Gretchen was selling her collection at one or more small boutiques in NYC, and she also has a contract with Pendleton. I agree that Michael Costello was smart to go on PR, because it gave him exposure. As you said, creating clothes that make women look and feel beautiful is a talent, and it isn’t one to be dismissed. I remember that season as having an unpleasantly high level of tension between some of the designers, with Ivy as one of the intriguers. What Nina and MK saw in Gretchen still eludes me;yes, Gretchen used separates, and wanting to use sustainable fabrics is admirable, but her final collection left me cold(especially the overuse of granny panties). Although Mondo comes across as being a bit of a prima donna, his final collection for that season made me smile, and gave me joy.

    • marlie

This dress looked FAB on Daisy.

    • Sobaika

I don’t think it’s so much the wearer as it is the setting. In an editorial and even on the runway, the dress makes sense. Bring it into any semblance of real life and it’s a big “wtf..?”

  • Thomas

    Gold leaf embroidered shower curtain

    • I think the shoes are beaten on the ugly scale by that hairstyle. 🙁

Not only does it distract from her beautiful face, but it keeps ruining the neckline of the dresses she wears.

      • Imasewsure

I think the shoes beat the hairdo but you are absolutely correct about how awful and dowdy it is. Hopefully it’s just her summer ‘do and she can get a proper cut with the falling of the leaves

      • demidaemon

I don’t know. It feels like a three way competition between the hair, dress and shoes, and a total toss-up as to who is the “winner.” In other words, a trifecta of ugly,

        • Judih1

    • bitchybitchybitchy

They really scream “Chorus Line” to me…One.singular. sensation.

      • Snailstsichr

There might be a point to those shoes if one could tap dance in them. Standing around and posing, not so much.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

If Keira had tapped winsomely across the pavement we could have been entertained, at least.

  • Shawn EH

    Hideous dress.

    • Kent Roby

I agree; I think it looks horrible on the model as well (which is never a good starting point in choosing a garment).

  • KinoEye

I think the dress is one for editorials and runways only. All its flaws come into sharp relief in the harsh light of day with no modeling or magazine wizardry. But Keira doesn’t look thrilled to be there, which isn’t helping. Meh.

  • sugarkane105

Her posture is very scoliosis chic.

    • Thomas

Lol I’m just gonna tell my mom (who has scoliosis) that the next time she comments on my posture. “But mom, it’s called scoliosis chic. It’s all the rage right now. Everyone’s doing it. Even Keira Knightley!”

    • Christine Hart

Posture! The reason it works on the model is because of her good posture. A tricky dress like this only “works” in real life if the model commits to standing straight up the entire time.

  • elemspbee

what a shame. this is a beautifully ethereal dress (? or is it a top and a skirt match). But she and it looks a royal mess from top to bottom. Even those sweet wispy hairs on her face bugs. would have been perfectly romantic and a dainty look if she didn’t wear that garment without care. i hate how she’s posing. A dress like this requires some work–attentiveness to lines and posture. the shoes look as if they are to tight on her top foot, like they are chocking her feet.

ok sorry. now my high from my 45 run has just turned into nothing but irritation. This bugs.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

That is one ugly dress. And the shoes are ugly, too.

  • What is going on with the Brits’ makeup? First Cathy Cambridge, then Posh, now Keira. Is it trendy to look hungry and exhausted right now? Or are all the fabulous people in England very very cranky this summer?

    • maretha2

The rumor mill says that both Keira and the Duchess are in the early stages of Being With Child … so they probably are hungry and exhausted.

      • Oh ho! That makes sense. I’m so behind. I did hear about the Duchess, but people love saying she’s pregnant, so I basically dismissed it. Thanks!

        • maretha2

If she is, I hope she’s having an easier go of it than she did at the beginning with George.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Aside from being tricky, its really unflattering, it makes her look rather thick and shlumpy..and we know she is neither…

  • another_laura

Dowdy is the operative word here. Bad color, not a great dress to begin with, and totally WTF with that droopy skirtwhateveritis.

  • J.W.

She looks sort of bedraggled…like a high school student who spent prom night at Disneyland…and did other things…

  • nannypoo

Frumpy on her and on the model. And the shoes are laughable.

  • Janet B

    Those shoes are simply hideous.

Better styling could have helped. Overall, not her color nor the dress of a real life human.

  • Gatto Nero

Wasn’t this featured on the Downton post? On the lovely Daisy?

The skirt does seem to be detaching from the bodice. And the whole thing’s a bit too long (see length on model). The overall effect is dowdy. Shoes are awful.
    Where are her people?

    • kimmeister

Yes, it sure was on Daisy.

  • Coolekat

Why is the flesh insert there? It’s not on the model and the dress looks more balanced.

    • Gatto Nero

The seam is coming apart, apparently.

  • Danielle

  • marlie

Sorry, sweetie, I can’t sign off on this dress. Despite the pretty fabric, the rest is just BLAH. Also, was she wearing these shoes when she was out with the hubby a few days ago? I could see them working with an pair of skinny pants or jeans, but not with this sad excuse for a dress.

  • boweryboy

The flesh colored gap seems like a deliberate alteration made by her stylists because I don’t see it on the model. Why?

  • Her posture makes me cringe. It’s an odd dress, but it would look a lot better if she simply stood up straight!

  • ginnyt20

where can i get those shoes on the model. Every time y’all post from this collection I forget about dresses because I love those pretty gold brogues! I mean…do I already have a pair of patent gold brogues? Yes…does that keep me from wanting more? No!

  • Pepper Collins

But I LIKE those shoes! D:

  • MilaXX

I like the fabric and dassit! HATE the dress, and the shoes look like something from babe’s first recital.

  • kimmeister

I love the shoes, but I have neverending love for Mary Janes.

    • jeneria

Me, too! Mary Janes are my go-to style. I figure it’s due to an unhealthy love of Alice in Wonderland.

    • SugarSnap108

I am unapologetic in my love for MJs. But I think these are the first pair I don’t like — just too shiny.

  • jilly_d

It’s just an ugly dress; it’s beyond saving. Head looks gorgeous as always.

  • Mothra

  • alyce1213

That’s just plain ugly. Everything about it is ugly, except maybe the fabric which is completely wasted here.

  • GTNYD, for sure.

  • Zeee

I think its because the dress is butt-ugly. Even Kiera can’t fix it.

  • Leah Elzinga

… and she’s standing like a Fanning sister. Keira, you are a grown woman, you are no longer a knock-kneed ingenue. Shoulders back, woman!

  • Imasewsure

My guess is that she insisted on a slip at the last minute and that was all they could find at the local drug store. Awful mess… ugly dress on both lovely ladies (ignoring the hiddy shoes as well)

  • Jen

My inner 12 year old LOVES those shoes.

  • dea

How in the seven hells did that dress manage to give Keira Knightley armpit rolls?

  • Trish Austad

The dress is just tired looking (kinda like Miss K herself) but I’m diggin’ those shoes (not the metallic finish so much but the shape is lovely).

  • frannyprof

    This is just bad.

  • Aurumgirl

Or the outfit is just not a good one.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

If the lining had been the same length as the skirt, it would help, but the shape of the skirt is awkward. The fabric is lovely, and could be used for a truly gorgeous dress, but this one ain’t it.

  • SugarSnap108

I don’t get this dress at all. Is that a giant faux pocket? And is it supposed to look ripped at the waist?

  • NMMagpie

This is the same dress Sophie McShera wore for the Bazaar magazine shoot. I have to say: she wore it better.

  • conniemd

Dull, boring, dowdy. I love your KK, up your game to some style and color.

  • demidaemon

It looks like a bedazzled slip.

    It needs to die.

  • SewingSiren

On the runway with those fabulous golden wingtips it’s fabulous! Worn with pumps (golden as they are) it is less so, or just another pretty dress.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

If the top of this dress had a different skirt, and if the color palette were silver instead of gold, it could be quite spectacular.

  • GoGo Gadget

“And the shoes look like something a chorus girl in 1933 would wear with a pair of satin bloomers.”

No wonder I like them. The shape, at least.

  • teensmom99

She wore classically pretty dresses in the movie and they looked great.

  • Not Keira. All dumb dress. Terribly dumb dress.

  • quiltrx

I think part of it is the nothing-colors of the background with the nothing-color of the dress. Plus the shape looks like a PR dress that’s falling apart as it comes down the runway. Ick.

    • Lower L

If ever a dress deserved to be described as “the color of old bras,” this is it.

  • a_liking

aw, I actually don’t hate this.

  • livesarah

Eh it’s kind of musty-looking as well as tricky. The colour, and waist gap are yucky.

  • CRAP….or as they say in London Pile of RUBISH!

  • Joey Melliza

SAD – she looks like ASHTON KUTCHER in a dress here. = (

  • BayTampaBay

Was this dress part of the Downton Abbey photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar UK or was it a different dress in the same material or am I just smoking too much crack?

  • NBG

Whoever planned her outfits for this poledance needs a vacation or a stiff drink. Her looks are all over the place and not very good overall. Come on, it’s Keira Knightley! You’re playing the game in cheat mode here!

  • MarissaLG

HATE the shoes! Really. Worst shoes of 2014. Bad.

  • crash1212

All could’ve been forgiven if she’d worn the model shoes. Love those, hate the version on Miss Kiera. Not sure what happened with the gaping maw on her mid-section, but if the lining had gone all the way down, everything would’ve been better. Designers take note…let the lining flow.

  • Lisalady161

I think she;s waiting for this fall; when “The Imitation Game” comes out and she’s poledancing for that one.

  • Columbinia

The dress is coming apart and poor Ms. Knightley is posed on a fire escape with ugly, nondescript scenery behind her, plus all the other stuff T Lo said about the lining and shoes. Why are they doing this to her?

  • Bad dress.

  • crashtestbonnie

The shoes are… UGH, and the dress blends into the scenery which one would suppose is not the desired result.
