Girl That’s Not Your Suit: Kate Hudson at the Armani Privé Fall 2014 Show

Posted on July 09, 2014

Girl, you’re in head-to-toe Armani that you didn’t have to pay for. You think maybe you could do something with your hair?

We’re surprised how little this is working for us. We would have though that Kate Hudson in a purple beaded Armani pantsuit would at least provide some interest, but she’s failing at the whole “working it” thing. It’s just okay. We think we’d like it a lot more if she paired that jacket with something else. That pains us, because those pants are pretty damn fabulous. Maybe if she got rid of that “free with purchase” bag and that horrible scarf-brooch thing (and got her hair did, of course), this would all come together. Except it’s not so much that it needs items edited out as it needs some oomph added. This appears to be the limit to Kate’s oomph-giving skills, which means it’s time to dole out the harsh truth. Girl, That’s Not Your Suit. Miss Rihanna is patiently waiting in the wings for you to hand it over to her. Let’s do this quietly and without any fuss, mkay?

Sleek hair, no brooch scarf and a miniaudeire, and we’re good to go. BTW, your makeup makes you look like a Madame Tussaud figure of you.

    • Call me Bee

Hi, Kiltd–long time no see! Hope all is well with you!

      • Kiltdntiltd

All is exceedingly well with me Bee. I wish so much I could post as I used to. Life is simply too full to allow it. Between the changes in my work situation, and the amount of time I spend on my own blog, there isn’t much extra, I admit. I so miss hanging with you and my other peeps here. I hope all is well in your corner of the Universe. HUGS

  • alyce1213

I say give it to Mom. It’s not her regular thing, but Goldie would look really fine in this.

    • MoHub

Goldie would work the shit out of that suit.

    • Danielle

Goldie would absolutely be killer in this. Spot on!

    • Tracy_Flick

I was thinking the same thing. It’s Matron Fab, which is really not Kate’s target right now.

      • demidaemon

Yes. Not to crap on Goldie (or anyone else), but this suit has a distinct Bea Arthur/Dorothy Zbornak vibe.

        • FuhUgh

Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up!

          • demidaemon

  • MissRiss65

She appears to be morphing into her mother with that kooky butterflies are free hairstyle.

  • dlazell78

This doesn’t fit her bohemian aesthetic AT ALL.

    • Boulderista

It doesn’t fit her either. It needs some serious tailoring as it’s too long and too baggy.

      • evave2

I was wondering if you are supposed to swim in this pantsuit. Thank you for saying that.
I hate the brooch/flower thingie. I personally LOVE wearing brooch-flower thingies but this just looks floppy, like it was a REAL flower thingie and needs water.
Pants are beautiful but look a little long to me.
So everybody thinks it’s the hair that puts it off? I like the model in the skull cap better but I don’t think the hair is horrible. Like she walked in, put on the pantsuit and never got to her hair. The makeup is a little too minimal as well.

        • Shawn EH

It’s disco-fabulous. It looks like something from a 1970s Deborah Turbeville or Avedon ad. Which means it wasn’t the time to forgoe the skull cap!

          • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, I was thinking she should have kept the skull cap, especially since she didn’t want to do her hair.

  • Anna

I hope she did her hair and makeup herself, because if she paid for that…YIKES.

  • Wink

Send that suit to Liza Minnelli and just start over.

  • Alicia

The hair is a protest at being made to wear clothes that she just is not feeling.

  • FibonacciSequins

Something about the proportions are off with her. It looks so glam on the model, but just middle-aged lady on Kate. She might be too short to carry it off.

    Lolz at her hair.

    • Constant Reader

I think the sternum-baring neckline, paired with the I Just Woke Up hair is making the whole thing look downmarket.

    • Carleenml

I think it’s a design that will make anyone look hippy and no one wants that.

    • kimmeister

It’s all about the cap on the model.

  • imspinningaround

How tiny is Kate Hudson* if she’s swimming in the straight-from-the-runway couture look?

*Actually, I can answer this: The answer is VERY tiny. I met her once at the Chateau Marmont. Quite charming and sweet to the plebs like me. Beautiful skin.

  • lexilexi

    She can’t pull a Jolie.

  • Richard Banger

It’s like she originally had the head cover thing on like the runway look, but took it off in the limo and just decided to do that top knot bun thing right when she arrived.

  • Cee Layton

Those pants are eating her alive.

  • NurseEllen

Again, I am struck by how much the photo of the model, with its freeze-frame of MOVEMENT, highlights the assets of the clothing. I think this suit loses much of its appeal when one is just standing, like a sparkling street lamp. The swirls of motion of the pants legs and the slant of the model’s shoulders as she walked the runway are giving life to the outfit–whereas in Kate’s photos, the life is being sucked out of it, and her.

    • smayper

Love your comment. Movement is such an important element with lots of fancy clothes.

    • Kiltdntiltd

      Adroit assessment, Nurse E!

    • FibonacciSequins

      Excellent point.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Movement does make such a difference with this look. I’d add that the complete suit, in that beaded fabric is a lot of look to carry off successfully. Kate’s lovely, but this suit is overwhelming her.

  • EveEve

Her hair and makeup would look much better if only she was emerging from her “workout at the gym,” Or, in her case, her hot yoga class in Malibu.

  • Anna

She’s swimming in this suit. If it was more fitted, I think she’d look pretty fabulous. In addition, and this is probably one of the bitchier things I’ve said, but she should cover her ears. OK, I’m done, and I’m a horrible person.

  • Guest

Nor, girl, is that your hair.

  • Denise Rambo

She looks like she’s either high or she just woke up.

    • Den Milano

      Maybe it’s both.

  • teensmom99

It’s been a while since I have seen some too-long pants

  • NMMagpie

Fashion is about presence (see: Rihanna). If you are not going to make an effort at that, just about anything you put on is going to fall flat.

  • decormaven

The askew bun makes me think of the little hats monkeys would wear when dancing to accordion music.

  • SugarSnap108

There’s no excuse for that no-fucks-to-give hair and makeup. Not sure why she’d wear this, since it’s clearly not her thing.

And I want to rip that X-mas bow off the jacket.

  • Alyssa

Seriously though…that hair with that suit?! Who does that?!

  • Beardslee

I’m also wondering about that shade of lavender on her. Perhaps it’s too ashy-?

  • Kent Roby

Rosalind Russell would werq the shit out of this outfit.

    • demidaemon

  • crash1212

Honestly, I don’t even like this thing on the model. It’s not very attractive and I’m not entirely convinced that RiRi would make it any better.

    • StrandedFashionista

The RiRi test should become a thing to see if an unusual outfit is on the wrong woman or truly poorly designed.

  • StrandedFashionista

It’s ironic that she didn’t do a 1940s thing with it. She has busted out that ‘look’ before to great effect and a purple Armani beaded pant suit could have supported that extremely well.

    • Kent Roby

I got the retro vibe as well (hence my Rosalind Russell comment). This would be a power suit for a “broad”.

      • StrandedFashionista

Always accessorized with a long cigarette holder.

  • Janet B

I’m positive Armani usually works for her…just not this time.

  • Bert Keeter

OR maybe id she had some personal “style” of her own…ya know?

    • Kent Roby

      Yes, this!

  • boweryboy

It’s so glamorous and luxe on the model, but on Kate it turns into a bedazzled tracksuit.

  • Vivi N

Besides the Oscars dress, nothing she wears ever works for me. Honestly, Kate Hudson doesn’t work for me. Never got the appeal.

And a big no to that scarf-brooch matter. As a brooch lady, I’m totally cringing over here.

    • Wink

I don’t get her appeal either. She’s just so ‘blah.’

  • Sophie

    Love the model’s headdress.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I would have liked the pants with some sort of silky/drapey camisole-type thing, do the hair (seriously- wth is that bun??), add a fly pair of earrings, statement ring and a modern cuff and dump that sad purse.

  • MinAgain

Her hair is bad, but what my eyes are drawn to immediately is the hem of the pants dragging on the floor.

  • FrigidDiva

I’d actually like to see Gwen Steffani in this. If anyone could make this look work with a top knot, it would be her.

  • Miss Ruth

This is the look of a slightly louche, visibly intoxicated woman of a certain age who has her eye on the 30something investment banker at the end of the bar.

    • venusvelvet

      Patsy Stone

      • Miss Ruth

        EXACTLY. Spot on, Vv.

  • Tee

JLo could also bring all sorts of fierce to this outfit too.

    • conniemd

Just about any star could as well. It needs a certain “everyone wants to be me” wearer and Kate Hudson doesn’t have the attitude to pull it off.

  • Mary Lauer

I am still trying to figure out how people SIT in those embellished fabrics!! My butt is hurting in sympathy.

    • International Model

  • Deborah Lipp

    This is for Susan Sarandon.

    • formerlyAnon

But Ms. Sarandon (no criticism, just realism) would need to pay a LOT more attention to undergarments during fittings than Ms. Hudson. (I cling desperately to the notion that well off people who borrow or own insanely expensive clothing for the express purpose of being filmed and photographed in it, actually HAVE fittings. Plural. All evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.)

  • MilaXX

Agreed this is not for Kate. I even think Blake Lively would fair better in this. This suit requires a sexy gal to give it the oomph it deserves.

  • KES4K

    Borrowed it from her mom.

  • suzq

Joan Rivers realness, full stop. Rip off that fleurchon thingy and maybe belt the jacket. Maybe….

  • marlie

I like the jacket and the pants separately, but with them together, this look reads a bit matronly. And that hair is nothing but laziness.

  • Annmarie Kane

    Give it to Joan Collins.

  • KT

It should be more fabulous, but it’s all starting to look like fancy pajamas. Needs work.

  • ChelseaNH

It just struck me that she looks a lot like Blake Lively.

  • amanda siegelson

that “thing” on her chest reminds me of the ribbon phoebe stuck to her dress when joey got the hummus on her outfit. and yes, i have many ‘friends’ related connection memories. :)

  • aahlife

The model’s version has a bloused top, which breaks up the lines, and give more waist definition. Kate’s is generally shapeless.

  • Plink

    Nothing here is working.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Channeling Michael Kors: It’s like a disco ball exploded on the mother of the bride!

  • formerlyAnon

I think the trousers need either movement or a tailored detail. The latter is obviously not part of the vision, so she needs to avoid standing still! Ha.

I do think this is sleek enough that if she accessorized it right (if maybe a bit grande dame/old for her) it’d work. The hair should be either a sleek updo or Lauren Bacall.

  • quiltrx

I think Ms. Hudson is beautiful, but she has a very narrow “RC fabulous range”…a certain almost-nightgowny type of dress works like gangbusters for her. This isn’t really a ‘tricky’ outfit, but it’s just far enough out of her wheelhouse to look awkward.
The fact that she gave zero fucks didn’t help any, either.

  • frannyprof

    This is not good.

  • Jecca2244

this would look boss on cate blanchett

  • d4divine

I think it’s the waistline…the models is cinched and slightly raised. I think to make up for the height differential, they eliminated the cinching altogether in an attempt to make Kate look taller. Instead she looks like a disco mechanic.

  • Man Dala

She looks like she’s heavily medicated.

  • julnyes

and RiRI would have worn the headcap/turban

  • Hey Wedding Lady

Send that to your mom! Goldie would rock it!

  • Sara Brams-Miller

  • cheekypinky

    That looks scratchy.
