Everyone Wants to Be… Lucy Liu in Andrew Gn at the 2014 Ignite Gala

Posted on July 01, 2014

Lucy is sending us a secret message.

Shut up. It’s totally true.

We gently chided her recently for having very little in the way of range to her style. But because she’s so consistently stylish and gets it right so often, we couldn’t work up too much anger. Maybe that should be our approach from now on; gently reminding the stars they look like crap instead of yelling at them. It certainly worked in this case, because Miss Lucy clearly took our words to heart.

Shut up. She totally did.

You see, we bemoaned her reliance on stark and simple black-and-white looks with very little in the way of embellishment, and now, here she is, BUSTING OUT in … grey, black and white. Which doesn’t sound like much, but wait! There’s beading! On adorable little paisley pockets! Plus: tricky-ass shoes! Polka dots! A funky neckline! Girlfriend is cocking an eyebrow at us and saying “SIMPLE? Bitches, step off.”

This is such a fabulously chic little look without being tricky or obnoxious about it. It’s got just enough glitter to it to give it some glamour, and just enough design elements to keep your eyes entertained, while maintaining that low-key chic vibe that Miss Lucy prefers. Tasteful and head-turning at the same time. Attagirl. Everyone wants to be you.

    • Glam Dixie

I’m finding the glittery amoeba’s to be a bit distracting but it’s a look.

      • MoHub

I thought they were external ovaries.

        • Glam Dixie

It’s like a Rorschach test, everyone looks at it and sees something different. External ovararies gives me the heebie jeebies if I think about it. Amoebas just makes me feel like I’m looking under a microscope at germs and what not.

        • SugarSnap108

Ha! My first thought was Glitter Kidneys.

          • MoHub

Only if they’re on the back.

          • CakesOnAPlane

That’s the name of my band.

      • kimmeister

I pretty much always see amoebas in paisley.

      • Vtg Fashion Library

        I just see bedazzled sperm.

    • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

I love her so much that I can’t even get mad at the lace shoes or paisley pockets.

    • leahpapa

I honestly thought – due to the location and shape of those pockets – the secret message was going to be, “I’m ovulating.”

      • MoHub

        You beat me to it!

        • leahpapa

Are gynecological embellishments going to be a new micro-trend? I can’t wait for Fallopian embroidery.

          • DaveUWSNYC

            Tubular!

            • Danielle

              LMFAO

    • imspinningaround

I do want to be Lucy Liu, just not this Lucy Liu. Though they do speak to the shoes, the pockets look artsy-crafty and don’t go with the sharp lines of the rest of the dress.

    • shirab

Wish her toes weren’t hanging out over those shoes.

      • AnaRoW

She’s definitely sliding forward. I’ve never worn heels that high but it looks like it must be heck trying to stay in them.

        • MoHub

Yep. There’s a definite slide going on there. You can see the backs of the heels are gapping.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I really don’t like this dress. Sorry.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      Love. Her. Simply stunning.

    • Mothra

I love everything except her toes hanging over the shoes.

    • TinyDynamo

I love that the background says BAM all over the place. As in “BAM, bitches. You all wish you looked this fantastic!”

    • Sarah

I want her freckles, that’s for sure. I like paisleys, but these are too specifically placed. Paisleys should be allover or not at all, I guess? (I didn’t know I thought that)

      • demidaemon

The more you know (about yourself!).

    • Sharon

I want this dress badly – except maybe without the bedazzled ovaries.

    • Ozski

I love it, but not a fan of embellished pockets. TLo, I’m just wondering, will you be posting pics of the Mad Men wrap party from this past weekend? There was a LOT of sartorial goodness, esp. from the male members of the cast! Thank you.

    • FibonacciSequins

Attagirl for sure. The dress is great and the shoes are even better!

    • sienna elm

      Love that neckline!

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

She would be more memorable is simpler, less trendy, gimmicky designs that are “in today n out tomorrow”. Note, this dress is not doing her bust any favors.

    • NMMagpie

Fantastic. I am a dedicated wearer of greys and this is stunning.

    • SugarSnap108

I guess I’m boring. I’d LOVE this dress without the glitter ovaries/kidneys/internal organ of choice — or the random white flaps.

Still, she’s so gorgeous, I can’t complain too much.

    • littlevase

She is always on point. She knows her style and I can’t fault her for that. I just love her so am possibly blind to her faults.

    • Kitten Mittons

Don’t care for this one as much. No to the shoes, clutch, the ovary wings, and the little white pieces of the collar.

She still looks good, but she’s not taking my breath away, which she usually does.

    • NBG

Cute and I love the shoes. Keep on keeping on, Miss Lui.

    • Denise Rambo

      I LOVE those shoes!

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

She looks very nice. MInimalist that I am (which apparently I shouldn’t admit out loud), I prefer her non-glittery.

    • lalahartma

      Toe overhang.

    • msdamselfly

Her hair and makeup are so monotonous

    • RescueMe23

I like it! I want to know how long those legs are on that model! Holy Cow!

      • smayper

        Those legs horrify me.

        • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

ONE MORE WARNING, BECAUSE WE’RE TIRED OF DELETING COMMENTS AND BANNING COMMENTERS AND THIS SHIT IS GETTING ENTIRELY OUT OF HAND: BODY SNARKING OF ANY KIND IS NOT ALLOWED HERE. YOU WILL BE BANNED FROM THE COMMENTS SECTION IF YOU PERSIST IN DOING IT.

    • MilaXX

Love her to bits. This dress is adorable

    • kimmeister

I hate the shoes. They look like black tacos from the front. The seaming on the dress is fabulous. The eye shadow color seems a bit off for her.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Totally with you on the shoes. Shoes that showcase just 3 toes and hide the other 2 toes.

        I can’t even with that. :(

    • alyce1213

Sweet lady dress. All the unusual detailing works with the staid grey. I like.

    • BayTampaBay

I really don’t this dress on her. On second thought, come to think of it, I really do not like this dress period.

    • Mona_Visa

Her toes are hungover, but other than that, she looks adorable.

    • Shawn EH

Very sweet, feminine look for her. I sorta like her more ice queen looks, but she brings a similar softness to Joan Watson when she wants to.

    • trisker

I really thought, TLo, that you were going to hate this. TOO much going on!

    • conniemd

I love the dress. Despite the glittery pockets, seams, wonky collar it still gives off a simple and very neat and unfussy vibe.

    • evave2

I think for once the little geehaws (like the pockets) actually add to the whole look rather than cause me to go WHAT IS THAT THING.

She just has the perfect figure and know HOW to make the dress look good on her without making her look secondary.

Does she have freckles or do my eyes deceive me. Again, the dress is shaped perfectly for her.

    • Lex

I hate the white collar bits but LOVE LOVE LOVE those glittery pockets– how unique and interesting and chic!

    • marlie

I love it. But Lucy rarely fails to impress me. I totally want to be her. OR, I want to be besties with her. Someone make that happen, please.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I think she looks great as always, but those white flaps bug because it looks like some under garment is sticking out where it shouldn’t.

    • KT

Ehh I don’t love it. There are a few too many design elements here, and this is way more of a fall look than a summer one, as evidenced by how much cuter it looks with boots, as the model is demonstrating. I’m all for Lucy breaking out of her usual get-ups and sporting something a little more inventive, but this isn’t doing it for me.

    • crash1212

SO good. Those shoes are fierce.

    • JaymeKay

Yawn. School uniform with glitter pockets and applied polka dots for “Art Week!” Ill fitting stripper shoes.

    • Alloy Jane

      Those shoes are ugly.

    • Jackie4g

I love this dress. It has wit, if such a thing is possible. I love the white little collar reference on the grey flannel. I like the graphic lines and the pockets are clever. She looks great!

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

It’s a great dress, except for the white bits at the collar that look like her makeup artist forgot to take off the things that protect it from powders’n’paints.

    • Dino Bonačić

Her smile is the best tricky-dress-accessory there is.

    • decormaven

She needs Foot Petals Killer Kushionz to keep her feet from sliding forward in the shoes, but other than that, Miss Lady is representing!

    • Boulderista

this dress reminds me of a maid uniform – the black embellishments seem to mimic a pinafore.

    • Anique Ashraf

I have never so longed for paisley pockets this much in my life. Andrew Gn is a goddamn genius.

    • LadyVimes

I adore the neckline. I wish she’d wear her hair up sometimes though, because she is the epitome of elegance.

    • Imasewsure

Adorbs. I like the shorter version better but I do love that she was able to adjust it to her classy and kicky little preferences as well. Love the LIU!!

    • quiltrx

      Love this!
I’m thinking this is what Thom Browne was going for in his menswear collection, but he got confused somewhere along the way…

    • Fuchsiaforever

I’m sorry Uncles but this is one of THE ugliest dresses I have ever seen in my life. For some reasons I feel very strong about this. Maybe because I’m hangry and tired? Dunno. Everything about it is just wrong. :/

    • formerlyAnon

I don’t know why, but I hate this dress. I think it’s the shape and huge presence of the sequined pockets.*

*ETA: ok, I think I do know why. Ms. Liu wears clothes well. Money is no significant object. So why isn’t she stunning me with envy as does Helena Bonham Carter? I do not know, but for me, I think a bit of a bar has been set by HBC, and this does not meet it.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I don’t like the little white sticky out bits on the neckline, and I really don’t like those shoes – lace platform sandals should NOT be a thing – but overall I love her and can’t stay mad.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

I like those shoes, but I think the dress looks a lot better with the tall boots on the model.

      • Lena L.

You’d have to have model-long legs to pull that look off, though.

        • sweetlilvoice

Does the model look strange to anyone? Her legs look too long for her body. Maybe she was photoshopped too much?

    • RutGot

I love this dress so hard. I want to wear it everyday.

    • crashtestbonnie

I don’t exactly want to *be her* per se but I won’t lie: when I was preggers with #3 I had my fingers crossed for a girl so I could use the name Lucille Louise, or Lucy Lou for short. I didn’t pull that shit out of a hat, people.
