Diane Kruger in Mary Katrantzou at “The Bridge” Premiere

Posted on July 10, 2014

Gotta give her credit. She’s the default setting for ladystars: pretty, thin, and blonde. She could rest on those three for the next ten years in a succession of merely pretty outfits. Instead, she regularly chooses the off-beat stuff.

Honestly, we think this dress really works for her because her conventionally pretty looks do nothing to fight with all the business. It’s the same quality that January Jones has; the ability to work some major tricky stuff simply because her looks are a blank page. If you put this dress on Zoe Saldana or Keira Knightley; someone whose looks are a little more striking and severe, and we doubt it would work as well. You need that quality that allows you to fade into the background without letting the dress overwhelm you. She’s got it.

Of course it’s not what we’d call a “pretty” dress, but it sure gets the job done for pictures. You can’t not look at her. Our only quibbles: the clutch probably could’ve been simpler, given how much is going on with the dress, and her hair makes it look like she’s suffered a grievous blow to the head. But we’ve learned that we don’t tend to see eye-to-eye with a lot of our ladykittens when it comes to tricky braids.

Despite it looking like it’s made out of Scout Badges, I like it. The individual elements are slight enough to where it can form a cohesive look from a distance. The various elements only become more apparent as you look closer.

      • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Perfect assessment! I was trying to find the right words. Thanks!

      • SewingSiren

        Saw the exact same thing.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Incredible amount of work in this dress-I’m torn between wanting to look at the long shots and the close-ups to appreciate the details

      • Gatto Nero

Well said. The scale is just right for this to work.

      • evave2

That is really good analysis for why I like this look on her. And I like the clutch (I could never use these teeny tiny purses because I carry so much, but I sure like looking at them).

      • Kent Roby

Yes, Miss Kruger has obviously excelled in earning her merit badges! Wacky, but it works.

      • Jeremiah Capacillo

She’s a full-on Monet. (but she looks cute here)

      • Lily

My first reaction, as well. I love it in the full body shots. It’s interesting and cohesive. Completely loses that when viewed close-up. Much the opposite of some garments, which take a close perspective to really appreciate the quality or design of the fabric.

      • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I totally agree! It’s like a Chuck Close painting. It’s absolutely stunning, IMO.

    • PastryGoddess

I like it. It’s tricky but she’s pulling it off

    • Laurie Bergman

It’s Drivers’ Ed on a Dress, but I like it.

    • Alyssa

Against my instincts, I like it. I’d like it better lined, but at least she’s wearing proper undergarments. The tricky braid isn’t really my thing, I’d like it a lot better if it was just the loose braid without the smaller inverted French underneath.

    • CPK1

Love the dress on her. But why oh why would that be the hair you would choose for the look? Heidi of the Alps on acid

    • carnush

Love the dress and love her in it. Perfect.

    • boweryboy

The braid is frightening. I like the idea of the dress but I thinkthe white flowery things takes it into gone too far territory.

      • Anna

The braid scares me too. It looks like a centipede.

        • Glam Dixie

My first thought was horseshoe crab. *shudder*

          • Anna

Had to google what that was. *shudder* Indeed!

      • mshesterp

I’m repelled and fascinated at the same time. How did she DO that?

        • http://www.jaimieteekell.com/ Jaimie

I love it. Except the ponytail at the end. I would tuck that under.

        • Ginmaru

Renaissance Festival hair. “Come one, come all. Feel pretty as a princess!” Our booth was near theirs and we saw this kind of braid all day long on men and women.

        • Lori

It’s not anywhere near as difficult as it looks. You basically divide your hair into front & back sections, braid the back and then pull the front back and braid that. A little tricky to do on your on head, but a piece of cake to do on someone else’s, and I doubt she did that herself. I used to do a lot of tricky braids when I was in high school (at least during the non-perm years—the 80s were ugly, people). My mom didn’t even complain about helping with this kind because it was a snap and didn’t take very long.

        • rhymeswithorange

Yes, it looks macabre to me. Like you can unzip her face. I kind of love it.

      • Sarah

Spines. All I can think of is spines. Grooosss.

        • kimmeister

Yes, I got “autopsy of a spinal column” out of it immediately.

    • Janice Bartels

Tricky braid or tricky dress, not both.

    • Chickadeep

I don’t know what this says about me, but my eyes are immediately drawn to the word “SALE” strategically located all up in her lady business. Also, people have to stop with those Pinterest braids.

      • In_Stitches

I did the same. Shame on the designer for that…

      • Sophie

        I hadn’t even noticed, but now I can’t unsee it…

      • Anna

I noticed it too. I have put back many a garment on the rack if there was something weird going on with the prints in that area. Also, the erm, embellishments around the word “sale” don’t really help either.

      • lovelyivy

First thing I saw, made it impossible to see much else. It does draw the eye….

      • MartyBellerMask

Yep, was just about to say that. The good china should not get a markdown.

        • Chickadeep

“The good china should not get a markdown.” Amen to that!

        • smayper

FTW. Coffee snort of the day!

      • CelandineM

That braid is just ugly. I don’t think I have ever disagreed with TLo for calling out ugly/tacky/ bad Pinterest braids or nails.

    • MissusBee

It is an alien braid, spawning another braid. But she looks great. The dress looks like a million fridge magnets, in a really good way. Or swim badges. Either is awesome.

      • KES4K

Haha I just made the same comment about the braid. Yikes.

    • SewingSiren

Now there’s something to do with all those boy scout patches.

    • FibonacciSequins

I’m surprised that I like it.

      • @Biting Panda

I only like it from a distance.

      • Carleenml

I like it and I actually really like the clutch with it. No real opinion on the hair.

    • KES4K

      ‘Alien’ braid! Yikes!

    • http://www.robertjamesfischer.tumblr.com Theda

This dress is a full-on Monet. From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess.

      • MoHub

The ghost of Claude is going to come after you.

    • Denise Rambo

Thank God she didn’t wear the shoes the model was wearing! And the shoes she IS wearing actually FIT!

    • Janet B

Those “Nudist” sandals annoy me every single time I see them.

      • FrigidDiva

They really have made the rounds, haven’t they?

    • Wink

The high neckline bugs. Would look better if it stopped at the white leaves, showing more of her neck.

    • Sam Smith

I wish the dress had stopped before the layer of Game of Thrones heraldry type stuff down the front.

    • MoHub

The too-large shoes are also making me nuts. When you’ve got a pronounced heel gap, but your toes still don’t reach the front of the sole, you need to consider a smaller size.

    • VioletFem

Love the tricky dress, not so much the tricky hair.

    • MarissaLG

I love everything about this except for the ponytail part in the braid. It was like the hairstylist didn’t finish!

    • decormaven

Kudos for her for putting in the work. Even if I am not a fan of the sandal style, tricky braid, or the clutch, she is well-turned out. Love the pedi polish.

    • hyperionic

I don’t really think she’s less ‘severe’ looking than keira knightly. Her face is actually quite sharp and angular. Maybe being blonde and tan makes a difference.

    • Little_Olive

I surprisingly love it, except for the part of her crotch being on sale.

    • RescueMe23

I feel like Robert Langdon in a Dan Brown novel searching for the hidden meaning to all the symbols.

    • WinterSantiaga

      She’s the Anti-Heidi.

    • MitchellGilburne

That braid looks like a Giger creation

    • Gatto Nero

Points for guts and weirdness. This really works for her.
The only thing I’m not wild about is the naked shoe. But I guess she needed to go simple with the accessories.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I want to like this dress. I feel like I ought to like this dress. But I don’t like this dress. And what a boring shoe.

    • desertsweetpea

I can’t help but wonder if there is a “sale” sign on her rear as well as her crotch. Gross.

    • Abi

I really like it. I even like the braid. I think with this dress it works.

    • Violentcello

I like the concept of the braid better than the execution. If the underbraid were softer and blended better with the overbraid, it’d probably be a really pretty look. As it is, Sarah’s assessment of “spines” is right on.

    • Imasewsure

Not loving any of this on her and Elle Fanning wants her braid back

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

      THAT HAIR FREAKED. ME. OUT.
I think this is Lupita’s dress though.

    • Yoshio

How can one not appreciate the less-than-subtle references to border control in the fabric?

    • MilaXX

Not this time. That hair is the thing stupid is made of. I like the dress and shoe, the face looks good and agree she could have gone with a simpler clutch, but I’m not offended by this one. Overall a decent look with runway hair.

    • PinkyK

Gorgeous! I’m not a fan of the hair – the inner braid looks like a horrible brain surgery scar! Otherwise perfection!

    • KateShouldBeWorking

My little niece had brain surgery a while ago and she proudly sports her scar. I’m sending the picture of Diane’s hair to her in case she wants a stylish interpretation for when she next meets up with her fellow “zipper heads”.

    • Jean Marie Downing

I simultaneously have issues with the hair and want to try it myself. I think a lot of the issues could be managed by softening the inside out French braid (the first part). It also exaggerates the different tones in her hair by dividing it at exactly the wrong spot.

    • Lynzee Michelle Lamb

It sas “Sale” on her vagina :-

    • KendraMR

Ugh, I can’t with that braid. It’s one thing if her hair stylist would had cut the ends to at least look realistic and not like weave, but to not match the weave color to color of Diane’s real hair? Now that’s just lazy.

    • JauntyJohn

The more I look at it, the more I like it. There is a real symmetry to the tiny design elements.

And surely that braid action counts as the equivalent of a double-word score on Scrabble for the Pinteresters.

    • dorothyeverytimesmurf

that braid is tricking me into thinking i’m looking at her skull. DO NOT LIKE.

    • somebody blonde

I love the tricky braid. And the dress. She looks great.

    • http://www.basicallyimcomplicated.com Gabby

I find the dress meh on her, but I agree that it’s her blank palate look that makes it even that good. I just don’t think it does anything for her, but deserved snaps for being unafraid to think outside the conventional box. And I do like her hair, but I can see what you’re talking about.

    • marlie

I love this dress on her (though I don’t like it on its own). It suits her to a ‘t’. I hate the hair from the back, but from the front, it’s really working with the look. And the shoes are simple, but I love them. The only thing that I could have done without is the clutch.

    • conniemd

I love Diane Kruger and agree that she has the perfect blandness to wear this look. Her playing of her character with Asperger’s Syndrome is pretty amazing on the Bridge.

    • MightyMarshal

I work in the beauty industry and I’m completely torn on the hair. it’s cool in an editorial/collection sense but IDK about it for red carpet. Maybe on a cool street style girl but the red carpet doesn’t seem to jive with it.

    • Shawn EH

She keeps a lot of secrets in her box. Unqualified WERQ for me!

    • LeelaST

The braid looks like a spinal column – yikes! Love the dress.

    • Vee

Is it just me or is “Sale” just around the crotch?

    • James

That braid is weirding me out, I keep thinking I am staring at her brain. Oh yes, the dress. I love it. But that braid.

    • SophieCollier

It’s okay, Uncles. Her hair is pure Geiger Alien.

    • imakeart

I love it, but “embroidered lace?” Stitched-together appliques is more like it. I also love (and covet) the braid.

    • deech_sea

I love this look. I feel ambivalent about the braids from the back–possibly they are too much–but I like how her hair looks from the front. The slightly disheveled hair softens the hard dress.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Her hair is a representation of a Klingon spine(s).

    • Rebekah B

I don’t hate all tricky braids, but I reeallly hate this one. I’m sure it will be all the rage on Pinterest though.

    • AndieJay

I love that dress. Her hair makes it look like her spine goes all the way through the top of her head.

      • willworktomorrow

That’s exactly what I thought. it gave me a shudder.

    • mayanempire

For some reason, I prefer it on the model, but I think Kruger looks interesting in it, too. I guess I’m alone in living for that Pinterest braid.

      • Sly

I oooh’ed at that braid too! It’s giving me major life atm.

    • ConnieBV

      Braid vag.

    • crash1212

Not sure I’m down with the word “sale” right over her crotchal area…but I guess I can let it go. I kind of like the braids. Hate the clutch.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

I will have nightmares about that braid within a braid complete with poor Diane’s brains leaking out of the inside one.

    • StrandedFashionista

I’m thrilled to see Mary Katrantzou dresses worn more often on the red carpet. She’s an amazing artist of color and pattern.

    • kimmeister

I would like it so much better lined.

    • demidaemon

I unabashedly love this. You go an get it, Diane!

    • ashtangajunkie

I love LOVE this. The braid is terrifying, but I like the hair from the front.

    • Miranda Reseigh

I was all like, “This is pretty cool,” until I saw the sale sign over her crotch. Nope, nope, nope.

    • Man Dala

She looks stunning here, me thinks.

    • fursa_saida

The braid looks like a trilobite, which is weirding me out, but I dig the rest of it.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Only a handful of women could pull this off. I love the dress but at first sight I immediately thought, ‘who else could wear that?’

    • m3grrl

If I were thin, I would wear that dress. But I would never ever wear that braid(s).

    • Michelle Lim

She’s letting the dress do all the talking. True. Not everyone can pull this off.

    • http://stef-lee.tumblr.com/ stef lee

that braid is making me all sorts of ill. it looks like exposed vertebrae on her skull showing through a bald spot… *shudders*

    • webslice33

      Werq!

    • livesarah

I love that dress. This is what Peter Pilotto *thinks* he is doing, but never quite pulls off. Her hair looks like something from an anatomy textbook.

    • stubbornthoughts

She had me up until that grotesque hair shot. Without that view, this has WERQ written all over it for me.

    • Mama robin

It’s a great look, but the sale badge at the Southern Hemisphere prime location could have used more thoughtful placement. Or not!

    • Columbinia

Star Trek braids and shoes that look too high and too big make me feel bad for her.

    • Coralie Legister

So… her crotch is for sale?

    • Danielle

Laughable on almost anyone else, but Diane’s got the strong face for it.

    • marjorie

deeply problematic that it says SALE over her vagina.

    • Baghag

      LOVE the hair!!

    • Judih1

Like the dress, but the hairstyle should only be worn at a Renaissance Fair.

    • Jecca2244

that hair makes my head itch.

    • lalahartma

      Coochie sale!
