Diane Kruger in Mary Katrantzou at “The Bridge” Premiere

Gotta give her credit. She’s the default setting for ladystars: pretty, thin, and blonde. She could rest on those three for the next ten years in a succession of merely pretty outfits. Instead, she regularly chooses the off-beat stuff.

Honestly, we think this dress really works for her because her conventionally pretty looks do nothing to fight with all the business. It’s the same quality that January Jones has; the ability to work some major tricky stuff simply because her looks are a blank page. If you put this dress on Zoe Saldana or Keira Knightley; someone whose looks are a little more striking and severe, and we doubt it would work as well. You need that quality that allows you to fade into the background without letting the dress overwhelm you. She’s got it.

Of course it’s not what we’d call a “pretty” dress, but it sure gets the job done for pictures. You can’t not look at her. Our only quibbles: the clutch probably could’ve been simpler, given how much is going on with the dress, and her hair makes it look like she’s suffered a grievous blow to the head. But we’ve learned that we don’t tend to see eye-to-eye with a lot of our ladykittens when it comes to tricky braids.
