Diane Kruger for My Theresa’s “Women” Series

Posted on July 07, 2014

Honestly? It’s all about the eagle cape.

Diane-Kruger-My-Theresa-Women-Series-Fashion-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Diane Kruger is the latest star for My Theresa’s “Women” series photographed by Jason Kim and styled by Tabitha Simmons in Valentino Pre-Fall 2014.

Because that? Is FABULOUS. She’s always in her best element when you give her something a little weird to wear.

Meanwhile, she has many things to say about her personal style – and make no mistake, it is personal, according to her:

“I know it’s crazy to think it would be unusual for someone to dress themselves. But, so often in Hollywood, women have stylists and they all look the same. I did that too when I first started out. But then I’d see pictures and didn’t recognise myself. As my confidence grew as an actor and as a woman I started picking my own clothes. I don’t want to look like everybody else.”

“If you’re only going to know one person in fashion, you want to know Karl Lagerfeld. He has such a unique personality: very curious, very smart and hysterically funny. I just love him.”

“I think most women dress for other women. It’s easy to please a man, the shorter the skirt and the sexier the dress, they will most likely approve of your outfit. I don’t think guys really get high fashion. In the end, I try to dress for my audience. On a daily basis, I dress for myself, on a date I dress for him and on the red carpet, it’s me.”

Okay, yes. You’re picking out your own clothes and you dress for you. Wonderful. Except you and Karl freaking Lagerfeld are besties, which tends to give one a huge leg up on one’s style choices, no?

Aw, we’re cranky. She looks good here, even if nothing lives up to the eagle cape.

And we might as well finish this off by being total bitches: we don’t a hundred percent buy that she never uses a stylist. We can believe she uses one infrequently, but we doubt she’s given free range to wear whatever she wants when she’s poledancing across the world for some movie.

Actually, I think the eagle cape looks kind of silly.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

        me too!

      • Kent Roby

I dislike it intensely, especially knowing that it’s not a thrift-store find.

        • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I’d love it if it was a thrift-store find.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

The houndstooth jacket is giving her the little hands Kristin Wiig used in the Laurence Welk sketch.

Unrelated: I love the muscle definition in this editorial.

      • ellatheingenue

        and I”m DOONEESE

    • Capt. Renault

Is it true I’m an eagle? Is it true I can spread my wings? Flying high, high, like a bird in the sky, I’m an eagle that rides on the breeze!

    • NMMagpie

Whatever she wears, the woman can give FACE. Terrific.

    • hughman

The cape looks like a half-assed attempt to avoid being accused of American Indian appropriation. “Having your cape and eating it too.”

      • Introspective

        ooh. good catch.

      • gabbilevy

Maybe it’s because we’re just a few days removed from July 4, but that cape reads ‘Merica Fashion Superhero to me. And I ain’t complaining.

        • marlie

Yeah, this seems more “America, F Yeah!!” than trying to (even subtly) represent something Native American. If it was a cape made up of eagle feathers, I might feel differently, but pictures of eagles are on just every item of clothing imaginable nowadays.

          • CakesOnAPlane

            “Put a bird on it!”

            • wee willie

there is a bird on it and a bird wearing it . how many birds do you want.

      • wee willie

be careful what you say .if she is anything like her brother Freddie you could be in big trouble

        • Shawn EH

          Only if we fall asleep!

    • Glam Dixie

She’s right about the dressing for men part, that’s for sure. The eagle cape is a bit silly.

    • Introspective

the cape is giving me distinct snuggie vibes. high fashion snuggie, yes, but snuggie nonetheless. (which i secretly love)

    • Danielle

The eagle is almost giving better face than she is.

    • JauntyJohn

Men — straight men? — don’t “get” fashion.
      Nice sexism, Sweetie!
Way to keep ‘em in their box!

      • hughman

Usually a statement like hers translates to “People who don’t like my questionable and sometimes fugly choices in clothes just don’t “get” it.”

        • MilaXX

          ^^^This all day long!

      • VioletFem

        Some do, most don’t.

        • Thomas

Well it still can be a stereotype. Most stereotypes have some truth to them!

      • Thomas

I will say that from my experiences, straight men usually either don’t care about fashion or only in a “the shorter the skirt and the sexier the dress” way. Not all, but most. I think it’s because our society still says it’s not masculine or manly to like fashion.

    • suzq

Wait…what? Two STELLA MCCARTNEY looks that DON’T SUCK?

      • conniemd

Hard to believe. But the houndstooth didn’t need the fringe. Stella seems to be on a fringe kick lately.

        • wee willie

stella seems to on a lot more than that.back to the LSD days of yore…………….

      • Gatto Nero

I was shocked. *Shocked*. Though I might like the mixed houndstooth dress better without the fringe. Love the jacket and the oxfords.

      • eandh99

that grey coat at least looks fabulous. Maybe if she stuck to outerwear and gave up jumpsuits?

      • alyce1213

Shock. Especially the blue jacket. And the oxfords are beautiful.

      • MarieLD

Right? is it blasphemy to say I love that coat? That I must have that coat?

        • marlie

Not blasphemy at all. But you might have to fight me for it.

      • boweryboy

Eh. The houndstooth dress is just ok. The more I stare at it the more I hate it. Also fringe. Why Stella? Why?

The gray coat is nice but she’s sitting, so LAWD knows what horrors will be unveiled the moment she stands.

Lupita has been the only lady star I’ve seen so far who is capable of making a stinky Stella look stellar.

        • Thomas

I’m just gonna call her “Stinky Stella” from now on. Thanks for that one!

        • Introspective

i was just thinking that we are saved from stella’s true to form scrolldown fug because diane is seated…

        • demidaemon

I only had to look at the patterned monstrosity once to hate it.

You could certainly be right about the second look. We’ll never know.

      • demidaemon

I would edit that to say just one. Because that Frankenpattern dress does, indeed, suck.

    • conniemd

Just make the Eagle Green and you could sell it as a Philadelphia Eagles cape. And I’d buy it in a heartbeat (either way actually) but high fashion teamwear! Yes. Yes.

    • Dino Bonačić

I love everything about her BUT her faux breasts. They just don’t look fashion-y on her. :/ #dumbcomplaint

      • alyce1213

        Where? The black Jason Wu?

    • RescueMe23

I don’t like her. She doesn’t seem like a woman that other women want to be friends with. I like the cape though.

    • Supernumerary

Huh. That ‘men don’t understand fashion’ line of hers explains why in her couple photos, Josh Jackson always looks like one of her outfit accessories.

      • Shawn EH

“What are you going to wear, Diane?”

“Oh, something pretty; just do your jeans and sweater, babe, you’ll look hot!”

    • Leah Elzinga

I thought it was interesting that her “day to day” fashion is for her audience, yet it’s on the red carpet that she dresses for herself. Puts some of her fashion choices in a new light. In regards to the comments about stylists, if I had to hedge a bet I’d say it’s probably a matter of “Diane, here are 10 items we think would work. Which do you want to wear?” So maybe she makes the final decisions, but I doubt she’s doing the initial curating.

    • MilaXX

eh, I like the cape and the mens wear inspired shoe.

      • mjude

want the shoes! we love our man shoe don’t we?

    • marlie

The eagle cape and the grey coat are my favorites. The rest is just “meh.”

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

It must be the apocalypse: I actually like not one but TWO Stella McCartney designs. It’s a sign of…..something….for sure.

    • formerlyAnon

I’m not a fan of the eagle cape. I don’t even think it’s impressive, which many things that don’t appeal to me are.

She, however, is a beautiful woman.

    • Alyssa

She is so pretty. I like the cape, but mostly because I want to waltz around wearing a cape. I just haven’t found *the* one yet.

    • Pound of Salt

I just started watching the US version of The Bridge and I’m loving it and her in it. And this eagle cape!

    • nycfan

I dunno, the cape looks to me like a fashionista who completely misses the point of those eagle-emblazoned Harley leather vests … the Eagle design just looks like they enlarged one from a foam-front baseball cap from a truck stop. Would LOVE the cape without that gaudy/misguided embellishment, I think.

    • jilly_d

sorry boys, but I detest that eagle cape. It reminds me of this past weekend when I was shopping at Menard’s for a new toilet seat, and I found one of those cushy soft ones with a soaring bald eagle on it. It was at the same time patriotic and hideously grotesque. Which sums up my feelings on this cape.

    • msdamselfly

Great clothes but I wish they wouldve changed up the hairdo some.

    • greyhoundgirl

I love the idea of an eagle cape–but it reminds me of a souvenier sweatshirt from a national park.

    • Imasewsure

I love the cape because it’s “editorial” but I hope to never see it in real life (’cause it would look stupid). Love the blue jacket and pants combo on her. A little dull I guess but classic in a Dietrich/Hepburn kind of way

    • Shawn EH

Weird, I like the Stella houndstooth dress. And the mannish shoes.

    • MaggieMae

Her clothes choices usually strike me as odd. I like the third pic here. The one in the white turtle neck and grey Stella McC coat.

    • sagecreek

I hate the eagle cape. It’s just the expensive version of the sweatshirt with the wolves on it.

    • J. Preposterice

      GIVE ME THOSE SHOES, DIANE

    • kimmeister

I had to go look up My Theresa because I had never heard of it, and had no idea if this was a TV series, series of photographs, or what. Apparently it’s a clothing collection.

    • Jen

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again- she hardly seems to actually act in anything, yet she’s at all these events.

    • Hetha Innis

Wow, I thought for sure that black and white Stella dress was Chanel. She’s actually kind of making me like Stella for a minute!

    • Tami from Seattle

LOVE the shoes she’s wearing with Stella M.

    • YoungSally

That coat is Stella? I was thinking Kors, Akris, Sander, Krakoff,….anything but Stella.

    • Sophie

I’d like the cape without the eagle. And the grey coat has promise. Do you think she and Karl Lagerfeld talk in German or in French?

    • demidaemon

Love the eagle cape shot. HATE the first Stella, even though that’s a given.

    • BlairBear

I feel like friendship with Karl means lots of pure sweet fashion crack

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

LUV the grey cape “W/O” the eagle thing!

    • quiltrx

Hm. I don’t mind the Stella dress, and I actually LIKE the Stella coat. What Bizarro World have I fallen into???
I don’t care for this girl, not sure why, I just don’t. And I don’t know how I should feel about someone being BFF with Uncle Karl. Because with him, it’s obviously what’s on the OUTSIDE that counts.

    • uprightcitizen

I just assumed when she said she picks out her own clothes that she meant she selects what she likes from what is presented to her. In Hollywood, isn’t that picking your own clothes? As for the critque of stylists … if her stylist made her look like everyone else, then that person was just really bad at their job. In these pics, she sure is making those masculine shoes work. Not everyone can pull that off.

    • unbornfawn

      I want that grey jacket.

    • altermyego

Would the cape look better if the eagle was on something that didn’t look like wool blue denim? (Yes, I do realize that it can’t be wool and denim at the same time).
For me it’s just all too much even on a tall woman, she’s getting swallowed up by it.

    • Columbinia

Love the shoes she’s wearing with her blanket-thingy.

      Dresses herself explains some things.
