Danielle Brooks and Uzo Aduba at the 2014 Television Critics Association Awards

Posted on July 21, 2014

Orange is the New Black gets rightly praised for a lot of things, but in our particular corner of the universe, part of our love for the show stems from all the new faces that showed up in our red carpet coverage. And while we could have predicted from the start that Danielle was going to love red carpeting, it was something of a surprise to find out Uzo loves it too. Then again, she once appeared on an episode of Project Runway All-Stars, so as far as we’re concerned, her bona fides have long been established.

She is serving up some Michelle Obama realness with that hair and we are HERE for it. Love the makeup, jewelry and shoes, too. Even the nail color. She (and/or her team) have a facility for the detailing, it seems. But we’re sorry to say that the fit on the dress is distractingly off. The shape and style (if not the color) are perfect for her, but it’s pulling a little too much across her midsection and the fit in the bust isn’t right. Still, she knows how to sell it.

She gets all the kudos in the world for picking such a tricky dress to pull off, but we have to say, we’d rather she scale back a bit on the trickiness. That neckline is doing nothing for her. It’s an interesting way of interpreting it, but it’s just a little too Space Age for us. We like the idea of her in a shimmery pewter, but we’re not crazy about this silhouette for her. We suspect she’d rock the hell out of a classic Joan Holloway-style; body-con with a pencil skirt rendered in saturated colors. That way, she can free herself up to have some fun with her jewelry and accessories. We think it was smart to keep them toned down for this look, but we’d rather see her have more fun with them.

Not that she doesn’t look like she’s having fun, of course.

I like the neckline on Uzo’s version better than the model’s though.

Danielle, just remember that satin is the Devil’s work.

      • Beardslee

The only person, in my opinion, who could wear satin is Ginger Rogers.

        • http://viridianpostcard.blogspot.com/ viridian61

          And Jean Harlow.

        • Skippymom1

          Audrey Hepburn could wear anything.

      • Kent Roby

It’s no coincidence that “satin” and “satan” are only a vowel apart.

    • Kim Elmore

Is Uzo too short-waisted for that dress?

      • kimmeister

Her torso looks too long for the dress to me, not the other way around.

      • Imasewsure

It’s the dress not the woman… remember last week on whoever tried it then too? It was even worse then I think… love that she’s a fashion girl though!!

    • Danielle

      DANIELLE BROOKS GIVES ME LIFE.

      • Jennifer Schiller

        Agreed, so much love here!

    • EZ Pass

Should not Uzo Aduba be playing Nina Simone–as opposed to Zoe Saldana?

      • Bexxx

Good call! Uzo in my mind is the superior actor as well.

      • MilaXX

        and she can sing!

        • The Versatile Chef

She sings? How did I not know this!

          • MilaXX

Google Uzo Aduba sings. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

      • Grace C.

She probably should have – with her buzz, it would definitely at least get released. Is the Saldana flick even on the radar for theatres or is it going VOD?

      • sarajgh

i still think it should have been adepero oduye, but uzo would have been great too.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

I see Danielle’s face and I interpret it as “Hi friend, wanna cause a little mischief?”

I do, Danielle. I want to do whatever you want to do whatever you want to do. Please be my friend, you seem rad as hell.

    • Leah Elzinga

If you’ve got Uzo’s face, skin, and hair, THAT should be the focus. Not some silly little dress. Anything she wears should just be a prop to enhance her killer features.

      • Coleen

I do wish she’d gone for a bolder lip color; she could sell the Hell out of a strong lip with that smile.

    • MilaXX

I like and dislike both dresses. Danielle’s is simply too small. She needs to go up a size. I don’t min Uzo’s Judy Jetson dress, but the hem. looks sloppy. The fabric also looks heavy like Christina Applegate’s dress.

      • kimmeister

I thought the same thing about CA’s dress!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

The fabric in both dresses looks heavy to me-just not the right fabric for a summertime event. Granted, I know these gals probably were in air-conditioning, but the fabric, particularly Uzo’s metallic dress, seems to be weighing these women down, which ought not to be happening.

        • smayper

YES! I thought the same — that maybe it was from the same (bad) collection.

    • Betsy

      In Taystee I trust!

    • teensmom99

OMG do I love them and think they look great. For once, I can’t accept the uncles’ criticism valid as I know it is because THESE WOMEN ARE THE BEST. They know how to rock these clothes and have more style in their finger tips than doe starlet has in her . . . (need help filling in the end here).

    • hughman

Judy Jetson in the Big House.

      • teensmom99

Just because you made me laugh doesn’t mean that I don’t worship Uzo.

    • rumcg66

I’m not sure I’m on board with Danielle’s makeup. But otherwise she looks wonderful.

      • marlie

After looking at the pictures a little more, her makeup does seem a little bit too heavy. But the colors still suit her, even if she does need to scrape off a layer.

        • rumcg66

Exactly. The colors work but it’s on WAY too thick.

      • kimmeister

The blush gun, in particular, is set to “overkill.”

    • marlie

From the neck up, both ladies look great. Both of their dresses are a little off, but could have been saved with some minor changes/adjustments.

    • suzq

Danielle looks amazing. The color of the dress and the shape distract from any slight imperfections on fit, for me. I’m just not fond of the metallic on Uzo. It washes her out.

      • Gatto Nero

And the hem on Uzo’s dress looks like it was machine-stitched at the last minute.
Fabrics are stiff in both cases, but some tweaking of fit would help.

    • CB

Wow, that Carmen Marc Valvo lookbook looks LOW BUDG. I don’t love the dress, but Danielle looks about a million times better in it than the model.

    • your face

I like both dresses and STRONGLY DISLIKE both sets of shoes.

      • kimmeister

I’m impressed with your eyesight for even being able to see Uzo’s shoes.

    • Sarah V.

Miss Danielle, “tennis ball yellow” is not *anyone’s* color, I’m afraid.

    • Sarah V.

      Miss Uzo, personal best.

    • MartyBellerMask

Uzo, you WERQ that Emmy poledance, girl.

    • Glam Dixie

Danielle’s face looks like it was smushed into a cherry pie right before she came out, her face is a bright pinky/red color, I think the makeup is awful in case it wasn’t clear and the dress is too small and ladies stay away from satin, it is not forgiving. Uzo’s dress is also way to thick and heavy looking for summer but even in the appropriate season I’m not sure that is her dress. Both ladies are wearing a killer smile.

    • Janet B

The dresses look cheap on the models.

    • Freynika

I agree mostly about Uzo Aduba, but last time she “had fun” with her accessories, she brought that giant carpetbag clutch to Kiehl’s.
For Danielle, I don’t know, I kind of like how the wonky fit across the middle/bust makes her seem like anyone else. Stars – they’re just like us!

      • Imasewsure

Good recall… maybe we should just stick with the tricky dresses after all…. :)

        • demidaemon

That bag is forever burned into my mind’s eye and not in a good way.

    • SewingSiren

Highlighter dress- I like . The purse is super cute. The shoes should be gold.
Gunmetal- Cute . I like the way she’s wearing the neckline better than the model, but the hem is atrocious.

    • decormaven

I like Danielle’s clutch, but it should have had silver trim. Size the dress up, and we’d be close to a WERQ. Uzo’s makeup assistant needs to find a softer eyeliner. I like that she picked the tricky neckline dress, though; it needed more of a statement shoe to elevate the look. Happy to see both of these actresses getting RC time.

    • greyhoundgirl

It always bugs me when the dress hem isn’t crisply pressed. Don’t know why.

    • Judy_S

I really like that color on Danielle. The fit made me decide not to buy a similarly-seamed dress online.
I think Uzo looks great, but the skirt looks odd. Maybe she took it up but didn’t have time/nerve to press it, and that’s why it’s not hanging right?

    • Verascity

Oh wow, I just imagined Uzo in a Joan-style outfit and my imaginary jaw dropped. LISTEN TO THE UNCLES, UZO.

    • clatie

wait, didn’t jessica alba show up in this dress last week at that sports award show?

    • kimmeister

Danielle’s dress needed to be pressed more (on top of not fitting correctly). It almost looks like a bubble skirt, when it’s clearly not on the model.

    • cocohall

My guess is that the lighting was not geared for black women, especially darker-skinned black women. I bet both of these ladies would look fantastic if they were given the Oprah show lighting. Although it must be nice as an actor to skip fittings in wardrobe (here are your orange scrubs!), it would seem to make dressing up for the red carpet that much more fun. They book look sassy and ready to celebrate. As they should. They are both standouts in a show with many terrific performances.

    • Kara Keenan

The neckline on Uzo’s dress is strangely similar to the Elie Saab that Jessica Alba wore to the Espys. Is this pointy neckline a trend?

    • anotherkate

Danielle is that rare thing: cute and hot. She just looks like she would be the most fun to get margaritas with. Uzo is making me so happy with all her red carpet choices–the Uncles are right, lady’s having fun and it’s contagious. They must feel like the downstairs girls from Downton Abbey times 100. After nothing but prison garb, they must be so thrilled to get dressed UP.

    • FibonacciSequins

That dress looks better on Uzo than on the model, but there’s something funky going on with the hem.

Danielle’s dress doesn’t fit perfectly, but I don’t care. She looks gorgeous and happy in it. The colors and shine of the fabric look great with her complexion.

    • Haley Buchanan

What a stunning pair of women. I have mixed feelings about these dresses, but they are both absolutely beautiful, striking, confident-looking women.

    • understateddiva

      I think Uzo’s rocking it.

    • evave2

Who wore a neckline like this last week and couldn’t pull it off either (it was distorted from the runway look by a tiny skiiny strap)? Because Uzo looks so good here.

      • martha

        Jessica Alba

    • ShaoLinKitten

Uzo looks cute to me. As a fellow woman wth a little gap between the front teeth, I see she’s mastered the art of remembering to put her tongue there before she smiles. Love her.

    • livesarah

Oof no to DB’s makeup. My sister-in-law has similar colouring and always has perfectly done makeup, can pull off a variety of colours etc. That makeup looks nigh on clownish to me. And the acid colour isn’t so great on her either.

    • Kitten Mittons

I think Uzo looks lovely, if off-season. I like the tricky neckline because it frames her face, and that’s where my eyes go. Her smile is beautiful and infectious.

Daniels is just a smidge too tight, but the rest is just perfect. Love that look on her.

    • Skippymom1

The women are gorgeous, with beautiful smiles, but both of those of those dresses hiddy.

    • RescueMe23

Boy I do not like either dress. The fist one is blinding, and the second reminds me of Jane Jetson.

    • Violentcello

I had the exact opposite reaction. Danielle Brooks’ dress looks like a bridesmaid’s gown for a wedding on a tennis court. I like the space-agey neckline on Uzo’s dress, but it does look a little tight around the armpits. (And the shoes are boring as fuck. Maybe. I can’t see them very well, blending in with the carpert as they are.)

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

danielle’s dress is so light and shiny that she just disappears next to it. maybe it’s the flash photos. Uzo’s kind of disappearing into a black hole too. turn down the contrast with photoshop. just takes a minute.

    • amanda lynn

Ha! Fun to re-read the review. :)

“And not to be nasty or anything, but who really cares what the actress thinks about the character? She’s not on the short list of people the costumer should be consulting for opinions.”

      Agreed.

    • JynxTheCat

I just love them so. They get complete amnesty from me for now.

    • Ali2044

I love seeing the OITNB actresses on the red carpet and all glammed up. They inhabit their characters so convincingly and so well, that I forget they’re real people who get to wear heels and dresses and be fancy. Seeing them in those beige jumpsuits week in and week out, it’s always a bit of a shock to see them with makeup on looking amazing. I barely even notice if they’re pulling the look off or not.

    • Kristi Puckett Carrillo

Uzo was on PRAS and you dissed her! KARMA!!
