Colin O’Donoghue on the Set of “Once Upon A Time”

Posted on July 17, 2014

Since we haven’t watched this show since somewhere near the end of season 1, we’ve got little to add to these pictures except “Here you go, Fangurls. Squeee for us.”

You’re welcome.

But you have to admit, out of context, it’s a silly costume, no? He looks like Adam Lambert’s slightly hairier brother.

Oh, calm down. We’re screwing with you.

Do they play with it in post-production to make it look more like he has a prosthesis and less like he is holding the hook in his hand?

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

You mean “do they apply the budget to areas that would increase the quality of this show”? Take a look at the ballgowns they put their princesses in and roll your eyes with me.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

*googling* – I’ve never seen it!

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Specifically, Snow White and Ariel. Apparently, there’s a Windsor in the mall in the Enchanted Forest….

            • MoHub

They lost me the minute they went with Disney’s Little Mermaid instead of Andersen”s.

            • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

…the only Andersen tale Disney ever did right was “The Ugly Duckling”. I can’t bring myself to see “Frozen”.

            • MoHub

Well, “Duckling” doesn’t have the darkness and tragedy of “The Little Mermaid” and “The Snow Queen.” Nothing for Disney to sanitize.

            • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Never forget “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” from Fantasia 2000.

            • MoHub

Ooh! I’ve only seen and owned the original Fantasia. And “A Night on Bald Mountain” is pretty adult and scary.

            • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Spoiler: Everybody lives happily ever after.

            • MoHub

But of course! Does the tin soldier get a new leg?

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I’d have liked Frozen more if they *didn’t* say The Snow Queen was the source material because really, not so much.

            • MoHub

Shelley Duvall did a very serviceable version of “The Snow Queen” on Faerie Tale Theatre. She also pretty much replicated the Cocteau “Beauty and the Beast” with Susan Sarandon and Claus Kinski.

              I miss that series!

            • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

…Yeah…don’t bother with it. If you want a good sister movie from Disney, go for “Lilo and Stitch” instead.

            • Imasewsure

Oh man, Windsor Fashions… is there any store “mallier” than that? So funny

            • Rebekah B

              Deb.

            • M_E_S

Oh my God the dresses they wore to that ball made me laugh so hard I cried. They were bad middle school dance dresses.

        • Lorraine

The costume that irks me the most is the blue fairy outfit. It looks like an 8th grader’s homemade Halloween costume.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

UGH. The spangled cupcakes. You know there’s a problem when you prefer the nun’s habit to a fairy costume.

            • Jennifer Schiller

Well also, the character’s a right b****. But the stripper fantasy fairy is a truly awful look.

      • evave2

I hadn’t noticed he was carrying the hook until you mentioned it. I was too busy trying to calculate how many cows gave their lives.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I’m going out on a limb (hook – limb HILARIOUS) and suggesting no cows died. This looks like pure pleather to me.

    • OffToSeeHim

He’s Captain Hook? I thought this was going to be the season they added the Frozen princesses. #shamelesscrossovermovieplug #gagme #seriouslyDisney?

      • MilaXX

well they already did Mulan and Wicked.

      • barbarienne

Captain Hook has been a regular on the show for two seasons now. To judge by the finale of last season, yes, this season will be a shameless Frozen tie-in.

      • StelledelMare

They are adding her. We’ve already got set pics for her too. I mean Disney owns ABC so they basically stick in as many characters from their films as possible. And when I say characters from their films I mean that they use these various fairy-tale characters very obviously within the context of the Disney films. I personally have Frozen burnout so I was not surprised but hoping they wouldn’t do a Frozen crossover so soon. For some reason though, I’m still liking the show enough to watch it (though not fully paying attention when I do so). It’s silly and a bit melodramatic but somehow it’s still at least a little interesting.

    • RussellH88

I’m honestly not sure why I still watch the show. They use magic as an excuse for everything, so there never actually seems to be any real stakes in what’s going on.

And it’s odd to see a show so determined to redeem a murder/rapist.

      • deelup

I stopped for awhile but then picked up again. It’s campy and mostly mindless. I like it.

      • StelledelMare

I feel you here. I really don’t know why I watch it still either. When I watch the episodes, I’m only half paying attention.

      • formerlyAnon

I don’t watch faithfully, but I still watch. And I know why. Every once in a while there’s a moment of pure campiness that plays off a fairy tale trope in a way that delights me. A bit of scenery chewing that shades from cardboard posturing suddenly into a few lines or a scene that strikes me as a witty, or at least snarky, nod & a wink. In between, well, it doesn’t require much attention and there’s occasionally a pretty person.

      • NinjaCate

Wait, WHO is a murderer/rapist? Did I miss a season?

        • Jarethee

          SPOILERS.

I think they’re talking about the Queen/Regina? She has of course murdered a bazillion people, and she made the Huntsman have sex with her against his will by talking into his heart and all that.

My beef with Regina is they keep going back and forth with, “She’s evil and they hate her! Wait, she’s good now! Nope, evil again!” which is kinda where they were headed at the end of this season with the big Robin Hood reveal…

          • RussellH88

Yeah, they’re so inconsistent in how they want to portray her. The whole thing with her and Cora made no sense whatsoever, it came completely out of left field.

          • Badriya Al-Badi’a

I like the back and forth with her, actually. She really wants to be good, now that she understands why people are happier that way, but she has to fight her innate nature to do it, so she has lapses and relapses. My heart broke for her with that reveal. I’m hoping that’s more complex than it looks on the surface of it.

    • Kristi Mitchell

Maybe he does, but I think he is so freaking hot on the show. Supposedly he is going to be getting a new/updated wardrobe this season.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I don’t watch the show but he does look good in that Captain Hook drag.

    • Danielle

That’s a smolder worthy of Flynn Rider.

    • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

Holding your hook between your legs while putting on your coat seems like a recipe for disaster.

      • Glam Dixie

Hahahaha, I had to go back and look, that’s a terrible idea but hilarious.

      • GorgeousThings

That was the first thing I noticed, too!

    • Meg0GayGuys6

They borrowed this getup from Johnny Depp?

    • MK03

I can’t stand this show. It’s like someone combed a bunch of 14-year-olds’ AO3 accounts, took all the Disney crossover fanfics and smashed them all together.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

        Eloquently put.

      • MilaXX

funny AND true. Yet still I love it.

      • barbarienne

        I don’t understand how that’s a problem. ;-)

        • Swiftlytiltingplanet

Me, neither. In fact, I kind of thought that was the point!

      • demidaemon

Sounds like the perfect summary for the show that should be posted somewhere like wikipedia.

    • Kent Roby

I don’t watch the show, but I giggle looking at him, because I immediately see the show title as “Once Upon A Mattress”.

      • MoHub

Don’t say that! Next thing you know, they’ll bring in Princess Fred.

        • Kent Roby

I actually just have thoughts of him on my mattress!

          • demidaemon

            I’m with you, Kent.

    • fananafanafophalec

Hello Captain Guyliner, looking mighty hot today (no but actually. he looks like he’s melting under that coat)e

      • demidaemon

What better reason do you need to get him out of it!

      • Swivels

He is pretty damn hot in that outfit. And yes, it’s been warm enough in Vancouver and area lately that I have no doubt whatsoever that he was melting under that coat.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I commend Lana Parrilla for continuing to act on this show despite all the odds against her.

    • Anna

Never seen this show, costume looks heavy and uncomfortable in the heat but who cares because…CHEST HAIR. I NEED to be that assistant in the second photo helping him with (out of) the costume.

    • hughman

Adam Ant for Gaultier. You can tell by the loop on the back of the jacket.

    • Glam Dixie

Eh, he wishes he was fierce enough to be Adam Lambert’s hairier brother. He gives pretty good Hook though.

    • MilaXX

He looks sexy on the show, but silly here in stills. I love this silly little show!

      • conniemd

I love it because it’s silly and mindless. I can’t stand most comedy shows because they are stupid. I really love cop shows and hard edged shows, loved seeing Ray Donovan back last night. But you have to have some relief from the intensity and by watching pure fantasy.

        • Angela_the_Librarian

Yes, it’s just a fun hour of TV that doesn’t require too much thought or effort. Also (for Lost fans) it’s fun to see all the shout-outs to Lost (e.g. they have shown Apollo candy bars numerous times), and Lost actors pop up on the show periodically.

    • Rhonda Shore

I always think of Captain Hook as the guy in the Mary Martin version so this just seems off…

      • MoHub

There’s a new Peter Pan coming soon—a là the Carrie Underwood Sound of Music—with Christopher Walken as Hook. I might actually have to watch that one.

In other news, Mary Martin is doing 10,000 RPMs in her grave.

        • Rhonda Shore

Oh yes, Chirstopher Walken as Hook is something i can work with!

        • Angela_the_Librarian

I think Walken is a great choice for Captain Hook, but I dread to hear who they are going to cast as Peter Pan. Of course if they want to set the ratings on fire they’ll probably try going with Miley Cyrus or Justin Bieber :-p

      • Mr. J.

“The guy in the Mary Martin version”?!?!?!!? Darling, REALLY. Only CYRIL RITCHARD, the ONLY Captain Hook.

Unks, back me up on this. Please.

        • Rhonda Shore

Yes! I was having a brain fart! Adore him!

        • MoHub

Oh, yes! I grew up on Ritchard’s Hook and never missed the annual rebroadcasts of Peter Pan. Very elegant and slimy at the same time. However, my understanding is that Walken is going to tapdance in the role, and I’m not sure I’m good with that.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

I admit that Once Upon a Time is my guilty pleasure. Killian/Hook is one of my favorite characters, but I wish every week that they would get him out of that silly costume. All the other characters in Storybrooke wear normal clothes when they’re not in Fairy Tale land.

      • Lorraine

When I saw this TLO post, I got excited for a second that we’d be seeing Captain Hook in a new outfit, but it’s just more of the same old look.

    • random_poster

That’s one hilariously* sexy Captain Hook.

*hilariously because we’re talking about Captain Hook

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I was the right age when “Peter Pan and the Pirates” came out with Tim Curry voicing Captain Hook so there will never be a “hilariously” for me.

        • random_poster

Oooo…Tim Curry voicing Captain Hook would be divine. Tim Curry acting in the role would send me into orbit!

          • alyce1213

I just read news that NBC has cast Christopher Walken as Hook for their live Peter Pan. I’m in orbit about that. Before I learned that, I’d probably have skipped it, but now I can’t miss it.

    • M_E_S

I shamelessly still watch this show. It’s got everything you need for the perfect guilty pleasure- pretty outfits, ridiculous storylines, hot men in leather, terrible acting. I have never laughed so hard as I did when they revealed Elsa in the season finale.

      • conniemd

Me too. But then I always loved fairy tales and its a great fantasy guilty pleasure.

        • M_E_S

Yes! “Fables” was my gateway comic, although I stopped reading it a while ago. I’m a total sucker for fairy tale mash-ups/motifs.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Fables was amazing – I dropped off after Prince Charming became mayor.

            • M_E_S

Be glad you did, because you missed the “Cubs in Toyland” arc which was so bad, I immediately stopped reading the comic and refuse to acknowledge it as canon. Just what the FUCK.

    • BobStPaul

The funny thing is when I caught a glimpse of the thumbnail out of the corner of my eye I thought it was Adam Lambert.

    • Henry Maler

That woman in the second picture looks overjoyed. Not that I can blame her…

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

      Squeeeeeeee!

    • PinkyK

He’s the hunkiest Capt. Hook I’ve ever seen!! Hubba! Hubba!!

    • Frank_821

It is a silly show. One hand there is eye-rolling absurdity with the plot twists. On the other they try to change it up and resolve conflicts per season. I will admit Rumplestilskin is cool and well drawn as was the wicked Queen’s mother played by Barbara Hershey.

I kind of got tired of the show though after this last “mid-season finale” with Peter Pan as the main villain. Tired because how they ended it could have been a perfectly nice way to end the series and I saw no point going on.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

….and because the kid playing Pan was way more interesting than the lead kid on the show…

    • Jessica Smith

To quote Bridget Jones, “Ding dong!”

      • Karen Belgrad

        Or Weird Al… “Yo, Ding-Dong, man, Ding-Dong. Ding-Dong, yo!”

    • SewingSiren

My kids just love this show.

    • Violentcello

That PA looks delighted to be helping him in and/or out of his coat.

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I just quit my job and applied for hers. Pharmacy degree, schmarmacy degree. I want to undress hot guys for a living!

    • Imasewsure

Yes the Glambert Jr is strong with this look… no reaction here except that it looks really really hot (heat hot, that is)

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

      Avast, me hearties!

    • Denise Alden

I’m getting Joseph Fiennes without the smolder, which is like no Joseph Fiennes at all.

    • formerlyAnon

Don’t you mean Adam Lambert’s slightly hairier and waaay better looking brother?

In reality, this outfit makes him look shorter than he is (he’s like, 5′ 9″ – 10″ right? Since his bio claims 5′ 11″) and like a candidate for heat stroke. But then, that much leather requires a bit of theatrical swagger to pull off, which I’m sure he’ll ramp up when needed.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Careful, Lambert fans have teeth and are constantly on the lookout for slights to the beloved.

        • formerlyAnon

I did think of that. But amazingly, I’m not that concerned. No photos of Mr. Lambert here, any that come won’t stay long!

          • demidaemon

That’s right, throw caution to the wind!

    • Mrs. C

Mr. C has been binge-watching this show all summer. I catch snippets of it now and then, mostly to ask silly questions such as “wait..I thought that guy died” and “why is Big Love chick yelling all the time?”, and “22 episodes per season???? Who does that anymore? Is it 1974?” But yes, Hook I like. Also, any scene with Robert Carlyle.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

        “22 episodes per season????”

That’s what I think constantly as I remember that the same network cancelled Pushing Daisies.

        • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I just had a violent cry because I confused Pushing Daisies with Six Feet Under and remembered the finale and – oh! the feelings!

        • Jacob Bowen

STOP! Don’t remind me of the TRAGEDY that occurred when Pushing Daisies was cancelled!

      • formerlyAnon

Robert Carlyle is pretty much the beginning and end of male sexiness on this show. But there are one or two (Hook, here, for example) who are pretty in a pretty lukewarm way.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

…it helps that he also acts and has a great sense of humor about the material.

          • formerlyAnon

Yeah. When scenes show a bit of a sense of humor – or even a sense that the actors are, underneath, enjoying the silly, those are the scenes that keep me watching. I thought the movie Stardust, and even more, so the mini series The 10th Kingdom, were more successful in hitting that note.

Edited, twice, because I apparently am trying to write multiple versions of each sentence simultaneously. Which leads to chaos.

            • demidaemon

I love both of those movies (and I finally received The 10th Kingdom on DVD last Christmas after wanting it since I was in 10th grade, when it first showed on TV). So much better than Once Upon a Time. SO MUCH BETTER.

            • formerlyAnon

John Larroquette did such a good job in his role in the 10th Kingdom! I know there were lots of other good performers, but I thought he really stood out.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I love Stardust, and am on the lookout for silly, so I will have a look for The 10th Kingdom!

    • KES4K

      Oh heyyyyyyyy

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Glamberts mover your asses, here come the Glambears.

    • Kimberlini

That’s an awfully big hook, if you know what I mean.

    • Anique Ashraf

Adam Lambert’s hairier brother is MY DREAM MAN.

    • demidaemon

      :)

I have to admit, despite giving less than no fucks about this show, I still wouldn’t mind spending quality time with him. Even when he’s wearing this ridiculous costume that no pirate would ever wear.

    • SistaT

      Mrowr. Scrumpf. Bite. Yes.

    • GenieinTX

God, I love this man. Seriously. I think he is sexy as hell. But I’m so excited for a new wardrobe this season. Time to be out of that heavy coat.

    • Man Dala

He can drop by the Eagle in all that leather, and he’ll be welcomed.

    • KT

Whoa. I’ve never seen this person before, but thank you for putting him on my radar. Helloooooo scruffy gentleman

    • Jessie Zapata Crookall

      He is wearing Fluevogs!

    • GemFemme

This fangurl went squeee, squeee, squeee all the way home.

    • quiltrx

To sum up…I don’t watch the show, I love the costume’s coat, and he’s handsome but looks like he might be a dick.

    • embers618

In case you have any doubt as to the power of T and LO (and also being a creature of habit), when I saw this post I immediately thought “Oh, good, sausage Friday,” and have been trying to make plans for Saturday by saying “tomorrow” ever since. Luckily, a good friend pointed out the error and I was able to send apologies and corrections to all appropriate parties :)

    • yllas

I am all squeeing over this fantabulous black leather getup and I think he looks gorgeous! But no one has mentioned the #1 reason why *I* watch the show, and that is the mesmerizing MR. ROBERT CARLYLE as Rumplestiltskin. I hope he and Belle live happily ever after. (Rumple is responsible for Capt. Hook’s hook, BTW. Rumple was not only Belle’s
Beast, he was also The Crocodile – he doesn’t mess around.) Oh, I love this show. I watch it just for the costumes, sometimes.

    • David Kresner

Because this is exactly the hair a pirate would have.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

      I WANT THAT COAT.

    • YoungSally

I like the photo showing that his hand isn’t the only thing hooked — see where he is getting help from costume person

    • crashtestbonnie

First: [contractually obligated] SQUEE! Second: ALL of the OUAT costumes look ridiculous off set and without the heavy filter of SFX they’re designed to coexist with. Having said that, it’s always fun to see them out of context. :)

    • amanda lynn

      hot.

    • Columbinia

Black leather Goth Elvis in Vegas.
