Oh, Audrey. Why’d you have to go and pick this Prada?

Because when one reads the phrase “Audrey Tautou in Prada,” one might assume that one is about to get hit in the face with international style and fabulosity. Instead you look like you took off your jacket and switched out your shoes so you could hit happy hour after work with the girls. Even worse, you have succumbed to the “wearing leather in July” trend. We would have thought you’d had more sense than that.

Then again, she’s never as chic as we always hope she’ll be. In the style department, when she’s at her very best, she’s just okay. We can’t ever recall seeing her in anything jaw-dropping or so overwhelmingly chic that we drop to our knees and shout “HUZZAH!” Which is a thing we may or may not do when other people aren’t around.

Put bluntly, when it comes to style, she never quite lives up to that face.

We keep trying and trying with this look, but nope. It’s a beige leather dress. Even the words sound unfabulous. No one ever says, “I”m putting my beige leather dress on and HITTING THE TOWN.” or “It’s our anniversary. Put on the beige leather dress.” Somehow, the purple accents just make it worse.

Why does the material the purple scarf(?) is made out of look so cheap? It looks like a fleece scarf I could pick up at the dollar store.

    • demidaemon

I think the entire dress looks like it was made out of cheap material, so maybe it was a matter of making sure the material quality was consistent?

      • Thomas

Well, the dress is leather and leather ain’t cheap!

        • demidaemon

It may say it’s leather, but it is stretching my willing suspension of disbelief.

    • Jackie4g

I think it’s a silk with a sueded finish. In other words, they abrade the fabric to make a raised surface, roughly like stone washing, but when you do that to silk, you get the suede feel.

      • Thomas

Thank you for the info. I have a suede jacket, but it doesn’t look anything like this. I don’t understand why Prada who imitate suede and not just use the real thing. I mean, the dress is made of leather for cryinh out loud. As I said, it looks cheap, like an inexpensive fleece/polyster combo.

  • suzq

Someone at Prada must have thought they invented the design that could triumph over any color/fabric combination. Kind of like von Furstenberg’s wrap dress. Unfortunately, this design doesn’t triumph in any color/fabric combination.

  • FibonacciSequins

    Blah, like so much today.

  • hughman

“There’s nothing quite as beautiful as a Bride in her beige leather dress.”

    • butterflysunita

“When he saw me in my beige leather dress, his jaw dropped.”

      • hughman

“You know, when you have on a beige leather dress like that you remind me so much of your Mother.”

        • Each of these comments sounds like an ironic voice-over in a different horror movie. Fitting.

    • Jackie4g

Sandra Dee could have worn beige leather nicely. Maybe for her going away outfit?

    • “Nothing comes between me and my beige leather dress.”

    • Little_Olive

“I am saving for a beige leather dress (to wear in july)”

  • SewingSiren

The color way she is wearing is much better than the runway. And less cinching at the waist is better too. Who cinches leather? I guess the same type who wear it in July.

  • MilaXX

I’m okay with the dress. I just wish if it had to be leather it was a pastel blue or something. Beige leather always looks like the flesh it is. If this dress was made of linen or cotton I’d love it more. I also hate how she’s hold that bag as if it’s an obligation.

    • SewingSiren

Yes linen or cotton. There is really no reason for it not to be.

  • Cute shoes, but I can actually feel the sweat trickling down her back. Sympathetic sweating is gross, people.

    • kimmeister

Have the Germans come up with a word for that one?

  • carrie

  • cocohall

She is so adorably gamine she doesn’t need complicated outfits like this. She just needs a simple sweater and skirt, and voila, instantly chic.

  • KateMaryC

I prefer her when she busts out the daring, baring stuff. It is a contract to her elegant face and poise, and it just WORKS. See: the movie Priceless.

  • Kent Roby

She is basically a fashion manikin with her adorable face and great figure, and she has access to loaned garments from big designers; she has no excuse for ever looking less than stunning.

  • demidaemon

Yeah, it’s not good. On top of it being a beige leather dress, it doesn’t even look like it is made of good leather. it looks like pleather. And nobody wants to look like they are wearing pleather.

    • Kitten Mittons

Especially not if you paid for leather.

      • demidaemon

  • msdamselfly

I think this is tres chic. It’s just a little bit too long.

  • Shaeyjosan

    that is one fugly dress

  • Anapestic

I dunno. I see your points about the dress, but Audrey gives off the sort of vibe that doesn’t lend itself to being a fashionista. She’s the ultimate girl next door, and I don’t know that she’s much improved by fabulousness.

  • butterflysunita

I love Audrey Tautou but agree that this dress is a disappointment.

  • PinkyK

She’s gorgeous from the neck up; the rest is just weird.

  • BlairBear

To me she is someone who has chic looks so that if they could dress simple and well they would look incredible but she works against her looks a bit

  • GorgeousThings

Ah, the old “Schroedinger’s Huzzah”, eh?
Not her, not here, not now.

  • Betsy

No Silence of the Lambs comments yet?

    • Beat me to it.

  • Mightiadd

Earrings and a bracelet would help, but she still looks simple and chic. NYC may be hot and humid, but the limousine must have AC, and the theater, like every public building in New York, has the thermostat set about 52 degrees. She’ll need a something to cover those bear arms if she expects to sit through the entire movie. (The purple material is silk crepe, not fleece.)

  • susu

aw, i think she looks great. then again, it’s hard to make her look bad. that woman is stunning.

  • Jarethee

She is one of those breathtakingly human beings that I thought could do no wrong even in a potato sack, but…this is no woman’s dress unfortunately.

  • J.W.

I read an article once that said women wear clothing by designers such as Valentino to impress men, but they wear Prada to impress women. I’m female and I’m just not impressed.

    • BlairBear

I’m not sure that’s true anymore with Valentinos new prim floral school mistress look. I think under valentino’s tenure it may have been more true. I think Prada is a bit out of steam at this point

  • What a terrible color combination. And I wonder how quickly she has to get back to the secretarial pool.

  • Ugh I HATE when actresses wear leather almost the same color as their skin. It never fails to give me “It puts the lotion on its skin” vibes.

But I love her – she’s my pixie idol. And I’m really excited for Mood Indigo – Gondry and Tautou seems so right I was surprised it hadn’t already happened. Now I want to dye my hair Agent Orange and rewatch Eternal Sunshine.

  • luludexter

ick this dress is terrible.. Audrey give your shoes to Caitlin F

  • Janet B

Audrey, you are too pretty/cute for this nonsense. Please find a stylist who understands.

  • KayEmWhy

This is now way for a gamine to dress. Tut tut.

  • crash1212

But it’s a great face. Terrible dress though.

  • Fanny_Trollope

    A beige dress with a purple fleece scarf. Must . . . have . . .

  • quiltrx

LUV HUH…so I have an epic sad at how hiddy this is. Someone get this girl a sleeveless blouse and a circle skirt…that’s all she needs!

  • evave2

I think she looks cute. I fear your leather-in-July phobia has set upon you again. It’s not great, but THAT FACE looks so cute.

  • Tee

With a great face and great hair, you can wear whatever you want. She’s so adorable.

  • Mona_Visa

PR rep for the Minnesota Vikings.

  • thatch pheasant

Ms. Tatou looks fabulous. GREAT dress. PERFECT color, shape, style of it, and the purpe is wonderful. Very well done. Brava!

  • RedRaven617

If the whole dress had been purple it would’ve been a nicer look.

  • livesarah

I agree on everything except the purple accents. I think they work so well for her they almost redeem the whole outfit. Until I remember it’s leather.

  • MoHub

Can we really say this is the same as the runway dress? It looks like an entirely different garment to me.

    • Gatto Nero

It says “not exact match” in the caption. So I’m guessing they are from the same collection but there was no runway shot available of the one Tatou is wearing.

  • OffToSeeHim

I feel like she didn’t “choose that Prada.” She picked it and then dumbed it ALL the way down until it wasn’t even the same dress – doesn’t that piss off the Prada people? You would think, “Could you do it in beige?” would send them screaming over the wall.

  • Guest

but she does one fabulous head!

  • gitchygitchymama

Prada, please send over the khaki skin dress with the royal purple insets. it’s perfect for july.

  • TheLaurenJean

It looks like she took a cheap purple cardigan, flung it over her shoulders, preppy style, then put that hideous sack of a dress over it.

  • decormaven

A pricey leather dress with that sad scarf that was snagged from the $1 table at Goodwill? Nooooo.

  • Gatto Nero

The eccentric Prada aesthetic should be Tatou’s friend, given her gorgeous face and pared-down Continental style.
    But not this dress.

  • World of Sass

I love this. I think it works well with her coloring, and she’s so slight that the leather doesn’t make her look bulky at all.

  • royal purple with flat beige leather. who thought that looked good?
