Zachary Quinto at the 2014 amfAR Inspiration Gala

We feel like this is a decent look that goes wrong in the bottom half.

We’re not inclined to love a dark dress shirt paired with a white jacket like that, but it really suits him. It looks like the shirt might be a very dark blue, which makes it better than a black, to our eyes. And we appreciate the tie, which brings some welcome pattern into a look that could’ve come off too stark. We suppose black pants were the way to go – mainly because we can’t quite picture any other color unless you start going into the brightly colored options like red, but we doubt that would’ve worked either. We’re stumped on that one. We’re also not crazy about the footwear, although we can’t put our finger on why. Would grays have been better for the lower half? Or blues? We’re asking. Let’s all gather in the conference room, eat donuts, and hash this one out.

    Awwww cutie pie!

  • RussellH88

The blue and the black are too close in color, which kinda bothers me. As does the slicked back hair.

But other than that, he looks good. At least it’s better than the Red Carpet Banker look that a lot of guys sport.

  • PastryGoddess

hmmm, I think dark blue pants would have been nice. Then you could add in some other colors to the look.

Those black and silver shoes that Michael B Jordan wore a few months ago would have been perfect for this look

    • lundibleu

I would’ve maybe gone for a dark indigo blue shirt, and dark charcoal grey trousers.

  • Introspective

am i crazy or is he giving me midcentury vegas mobster with the white jacket and the slicked hair? something goes awry in the details…

    • Constant Reader

My thoughts exactly — but there is always the possibility that we’re both crazy! 😉

    • Trent

But he’s giving us serious Sylar-face. Some villainous shit is about to go down…

  • James

Those shoes remind me of house shoes and are irritating the hell out of me. Needed a more formal shoe for this look.

    • JP

Yes, that was my thought: what’s with the slippers? All they need is some crest-like logo embroidered on them.

  • hughman

In these pics the shoes look like bedroom slippers.

Personally I like the idea of a color pant although red would have made the outfit kind of Yankee Doodle.

  • Angel Ratliff

There’s donuts? I think this outfit photographs poorly. That being said, on my monitor, the pants and the shirt match…. weird.

  • TBH I’m just happy that his pants fit and are the right length.

    • kimmeister

I’m happy that the jacket is the right size for his shoulders!

  • Scimommy

It would have been better if the shoes contrasted with the pants, instead of looking like they’re a continuation of them, footsie pajama style. I’m thinking gray would have worked. Or maybe switch it around – a dark gray pant and a black shoe.

    • Alyssa

That’s my thought as well…as is, his pants just blend into his shoes, and it looks funny.

  • Kent Roby

Black-and-white plaid (or checked) pants would get my vote, or just switching the shirt to a more vivid blue to contrast with the black.

  • Grumpy Girl

I’d prefer the pants in gray. But then again, that is often my default stance: I love gray. But he needs to fix the hair that is running amuck.

  • Danielle

You know what, from what I’ve seen of his bulge, I’d be happy to lose the bottoms all together. For science.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

That is a beautiful jacket on him. It would look great with the pants from Channing Tatum’s suit, imo.

  • gsk241

I like it as is. Now, pass me a damn donut!

    • juniper

      rainbow or chocolate sprinkle?

  • mjude

    a different tie?

  • marlie

The shirt reads as black to me, but I think he looks pretty great, from head to toe. Perhaps a skosh wintery, but still really good.

    • kimmeister

Yeah, I have no issues with the color of his pants either. Maybe the only change would be the material of his shoes, to add a bit of shine there.

  • Rachel Cox O’Connor

am I the ONLY one who cannot get past how horrible heroes was and how terrible he was as Sylar? I just cannot look at him as cute…

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I actually liked the first season of Heroes quite a lot (along with his season 1 Sylar) … watched the first 2 or 3 eps of season 2 and decided to stop before it turned into a really bad break-up.

      • Rachel Cox O’Connor

yea, maybe i stayed in the relationship too long. the first season was pretty great (a lot of promise) but oh man….

    • julnyes

I never watched Heroes, so my frame of reference for him is as Spock in the rebooted Star Trek and as a serial killer on American Horror Story – he was fantastic in both. Additionally I find him very charming in interviews, so he is definitely cute in my world.

  • DuBey2

Dk Grey pants with a subtle sheen thats in the fabric – maybe a thin denim??

  • eringorock

See, the problem I have is from the top: WAY too much gel in that gorgeous mane of his…

  • MilaXX

I need to see this on my laptop because the shirt & pants look black on my phone. I’m okay with that though. My only quibble is the lapels on the jacket make it feel a little too dressy for the pants/shirt.

  • Beardslee

A white jacket to me reads as old time summer wear, so then everything else looks too dark and wintry. Light gray trousers, or even seersucker? A pale shirt? And white bucks? Can a girl dream?

    • Shawn EH

Or, not a white jacket? It’s really hard to pull off. It goes with everything or nothing.

  • JauntyJohn

I agree with pretty much all the commentary on the color issues — and wonder if the photos/lighting are working against a more subtle color story he was working. (“Color story!” The sixth gayest phrase in the English Language!)

I think we should award some points for excellent tailoring, though, given how often the boys get it wrong.

    • marlie

Are you going to make a list of the top 5? 😉

      • kimmeister

Ooooh, that would be fun, although subject to much peer review!

      • JauntyJohn

somewhere in my old comments here I confessed to possibly the gayest phrase, but it’s too long a story to repeat. I yield to the BK’s to supply their own, no doubt quite witty, lists.

        • demidaemon

I think “Fabulous” and all its other forms should definitely be in there.

        • Jackie4g

I’d vote for a sentence containing the phrase “deploy the nude pump”. There is not a straight man in creation who wouldn’t say “what pump?” Actually, all kinds of people would probably say at least “what?”.

        • hughman

The 3 Great Gay Phrases are

          1.”Oh her.”
          2.”I’ve had her.”
          3. “She goes to my gym.”

  • BLauD

I think gray would have been perfect for this.

  • Imasewsure

No I don’t really like this and I hate to admit it but I like the white jacket we were making fun of yesterday a bit better (on the wee/not wee Colton Whatshisname). Not dull though….

  • J.W.

This looks like what my older brother wore to his prom in the very late 50s.

  • I like this look on him a lot. I wouldn’t mind a different shoe- a black leather brogue type.

  • t bell

Actually I think he looks pretty good; I’ve never thought of him as being handsome but he looks so to me in this outfit.

  • Loladog10

See, he’s a handsome guy but a little–shall we say–hirsute. So he needs a lighter look to balance out the eyebrows and the 5 o’clock shadow and the youthful hair. So yes, white jacket and then maybe grays for shirt/pants. Or white/black patterned pants?

  • e jerry powell

    But what was Bomer wearing?

  • Chase

If I’d been styling him, I would paired this with red shoes. I think that would work.

  • nannypoo

I don’t like what he’s wearing, but all I ever see is his fabulous eyebrows.

  • demidaemon

I actually think red pants would work and would be event appropriate.

  • boweryboy

He’s freakishly delicious so I don’t care too much about what he’s wearing. However, the bottom half of this outfit is tragic. Them dad pants, and not in the hot dad kind of way Quinto will be in a couple of years.

I think the problem comes down to silhouette. If there ever was a time that called for black skinny ankle grazer pants this would be it.

  • Bill Craven

I think a dark pastel shirt (maybe pink? robin’s egg blue?) to contrast more with the black pants. And less product, please, in the hair; he’s like an unkempt Gavin Newsom.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Is it because the shoes are matte rather than shiny? They end up looking a bit like carpet slippers…

  • macwell

Why do I think he’s not gonna age well? 🙁

    • Shawn EH

Maybe he’ll go in a character direction, like Burgess Meredith or James Mason?

  • FibonacciSequins

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the bottom half. I wouldn’t have objected to a blue or gray suede shoe, coordinating with the light blue or gray (or green?) shirt he should have worn. Black flatters his skin tone, but it doesn’t look right with the white jacket.

  • luluransom

Excuse me, I was led to believe there’d be donuts? Oh Zachary? Give him cooler shoes, something pointy, two-toned. He needs punctuation.

  • Carrie

I might have liked a charcoal gray pair of pants maybe. Go monochrome.

  • alyce1213

No faults, no complaints. I think it all works together really well.

  • Good looking outfit. Not feeling the hair, actually.

  • KiP07

I feel bad. Donuts seem way more exciting to me right now than a lot of summer celebrity fashion…

  • MannahattaMamma

Charcoal. Charcoal trousers would’ve been so Cary Grant Riviera …

  • duneboi

Grey slacks would have been the way to go with the jacket, shirt/tie combo.
