What a ridiculously pretty pair of people.

Like chic fairy tale characters or something.

Style-wise, he’s just about perfect. We’re a bit bored with these monochromatic menswear trends on the red carpet, but in this case the blues are such brilliant shades and they play up his eyes so well that we can’t disagree with the choice. If we want to get really nitpicky (and when do we not?) his pocket square looks like a napkin at a child’s birthday party. Other than that, he is, as we said, just about perfect.

As for her, well… we’re not in love with this at all. The bustline is distractingly overdone, the waist sits too high and the skirt’s a bit too short. The only reason she doesn’t look bad is because she’s so pretty and because she clearly chose the outfit to show off her legs, which it’s doing nicely. But that thing is doing her no favors.

    • Ginger

That romper looks cheap. His suit is beautiful.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

She’s so pretty, but a formal romper should not be a thing.

      • Rhonda Shore

Particularly on the red carpet. This ice-skating outfit red carpet trendlet has got to stop!

      • Anna

Especially considering that glorious chartreuse gown we first saw her in!

      • Leah Elzinga

a formal romper with 3/4 of a mini overskirt. sometimes don’t you wish designers had to describe their designs out loud before sending them to production. think how many outfits the public could have been protected from over the years! then again, I can guarantee many designers probably already do this and remain undaunted. Uncle Karl? I’m talking about you here.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

That would be such a good idea!

        • fursa_saida

Uncle Karl is the one designer who would be in no way deterred by that. (Possibly I only think this because of the way the Fug Girls write him.)

      • marlie

Hahahaha, I just typed the exact same thing.

      • Monabel

The nakedness of the woman next to the covered up man looks like subjugation to me. Particularly here.

      • another_laura

Jeebus. I didn’t realize it was a romper until I read the astute Bitter Kitten Commentariat. I thought it was just a too-short skirt. Awful choice. Great legs, though.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

          Definitely stunning legs!

      • trebor

She wore prettier gowns as Tish Jones in Doctor Who! Still want to see the movie, though.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

If her dress had rhinestones it would be perfect for skating. I envy his hair. Like, a LOT.

    • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

That is like the skort of rompers and I want to throw it into the ocean.

      • Leah Elzinga

“and I want to throw it in the ocean” *chortle* stealing this.

        • MoHub

          Poor fish!

      • another_laura

Don’t pollute the poor ocean with this trash! Better we should burn it….

        • demidaemon

I like shredding and repurposing. Allows for theat physical sensation of destroying ugly things while also preventing all types of pollution.

    • Danielle

Her hair. I’m HERE for it.

      • Leah Elzinga

it looks soooo soft and pretty. I would have to restrain myself from trying to muss it in real life. I’m a creeper. I know.

      • marlie

That’s what I wish my hair looks like when I wear it natural. (Note: It doesn’t.)

    • Noah

That is one fucking gorgeous suit. Doesn’t help that the man wearing it is pretty gorgeous himself.

      • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Right? I admit to a near fatal weakness for the ginger’s in the crowd. But this man is just unfair!

        • Leah Elzinga

          his hair is so pretty!

        • Beardslee

          He really is delectable.

          • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

            Um, yeah. (retreating to bunk)

            • PlethoraofBooks

Go to your bunk after hearing his voice! That’s what sent me to mine… not just pretty, but an amazing voice…

      • Snailstsichr

I shamelessly admit I swoon for blue eyes.

    • sienna elm

The neckline looks like fancily folded napkins! And a one-piece short (skort?) set should NEVER be…at least not after age three.

      • Shawn EH

It definitely looks like Gugu is sporting her romper room skorts!

    • Nikko Viquiera

I didn’t even notice her! That man is yummy.

    • barbarienne

Why are the points on the bustline folded down? Is that a slightly different style from the runway version, or are they not supposed to do that? I prefer the runway bustline–it has elegance and helps me overlook the fact that this is a formal romper, an oxymoron if ever there was one. She looks presentable mainly because of what’s going on above the neck. A stunning face can carry a lot.

Those blues look great on him, though I desperately want to straighten his tie.

    • KateMaryC

      Those earrings!

    • lynnlee

Her romper is just odd. Like a costume designed for a cocktail waitress.

    • Anna

Why the folded napkin romper, why?? She looked so spectacular on her first outing! Face and hair are gorgeous, though.

      He is perfection.

    • SugarSnap108

A bunny tail would not be out of place on the back of her outfit.

I love his suit. He’s just one neck beard away from perfection.

    • Mothra

I think she forgot the skirt to that outfit. Some of those poses look like she’s been practicing as a pole dancer. Also, does anyone else thing his pants are just a touch too short?

      • MoHub

It’s a romper, so it’s actually shorts on the bottom. No place to put a skirt.

    • Wink

Rompers, like those god-awful Crocs, are only cute on children. You can make it out of nice fabric and ‘dress it up’ with slits and a fancy bustline, but it’s still a freaking romper. Period.

    • Supernumerary

I’ll forgive the awful outfit — I’m just glad that Gugu is finally getting some love.

He looks like the lovechild of Jamie Dornan and Kevin McKidd.

    • Little_Olive

A romper should never be the way to go for a premiere. As in, she shouldn’t even have tried it on.

If she dies (no intention), can I get her legs?

    • boweryboy

There are other ways for her to show off her legs without resorting to a romper. A romper! It’s a runway only look that works on a model for the 13 seconds it takes to walk the runway.

    • SewingSiren

Iridescent blue suits rarely go wrong. Rompers rarely go right. I do like the bodice of this romper though, but a knee length full=ish shirt would have been the way to go here.

    • Heather

Adding to all the ‘ugh’ comments on romper above, plus it doesn’t even match up in the back (uneven at the top). I can sew better than that.

    • Heather

Also she’s sooo pretty but I want some lipstick on her.

    • Frank_821

The formal romper is an odd concept but she is exuberant and is going a long way on selling ti

He is dapper faboo-ness. I dig the birthday party pocket square. It’s so frustrating sometimes trying to explain to young straight lads that a guy in a properly tailored or properly fitting suit is very sexy and empowering

    • marlie

“Formal romper” should never be a thing. And it’s a shame, because otherwise she’s been doing a pretty good job on this poledance. Also, I can’t wait to see the movie.

      • Carleenml

formal romper is not a thing. it’s an oxymoron.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

        The movie sounds so good!

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

It was a wonderful period drama with amazing attention to detail in set and costumes, but the story was contrived (I know it’s based in fact but it could have been done a whole lot better) and the leads were overshadowed by the likes of Tom Wilkinson and Penelope Wilton in supporting roles. You have to be pretty damn good to make a mark with those two in the picture.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Interesting! I will still see it. But yes, with those veterans on hand, the young people really have to shine.

        • TeacherH

I enjoyed the movie, although it did get cheesy at the end. If you go in assuming that you are going to see a deep and complex movie, it’s not quite it. But if you go in expecting a historical romance, than it is better and more thought provoking than anything normally in the genre.

Plus gorgeous clothes, pretty people, lovely settings, great acting, decent writing – great summer fun movie with a side of serving up serious issues. Plus the feeling of virtue of supporting a woman of color director, writer, and lead actress.

          • TeacherH

Also, it was a great movie to watch with my middle-school-age daughter. She really liked it.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I tend not to go to deep and complex thought-provoking movies. Historical romance is much more my speed. Don’t suppose there are any car chases or alien attacks in it to keep husband entertained?

      • Denise Alden

I saw the movie and I adored it. So much to love in this film, even with its ‘wrapped up in a bow’ ending. I didn’t care! Also: she is so beautiful that I don’t even see that romper.

        • Wink

I loved the movie! She’s gorgeous and a good actress, but the romper is a no:)

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

She’s either 1) Really in love with that romper and wants the world to fall in love with her as well or 2) Really good actress to make you even consider #1 as an option.

    • Snailstsichr

Can I add that I hate her shoes. Yes, they are doing wonderful things for her legs, but black lace??? Ugh. She is too pretty to be abused like this – new stylist, stat!

    • Sobaika

If this were anyone else I would be screeching about a romper too but she’s SO PRETTY and I got to see Belle last weekend and they are so cute and he’s very dashing and my heart is just swelling, you guys.

      • Denise Alden

Nicely said. I loved Belle, too.

    • decormaven

What a strange style choice for a period piece – a formal romper? That was in no style decade, ever. At least one I care to remember.

    • Lilyana_F

A gorgeous man in a gorgeous suit, le sigh… And I don’t think she can manage to look bad even wearing a trash bag, but that’s cutting it pretty close.

    • Wink

In pic #5, man in background is wearing the same blue suit as Sam Reid. Awk-ward.

    • Amílcar Castaneda

      Men, this boy is pretty!

    • Jaeda Laurez

That scrolldown hurt my feelings so bad. She’s so cute, but I was not prepared for it to not be an actual dress. He looks good too, though.

      • suzq

Worse than that…it’s a ROMPER! Once you learn to speak in full sentences, rompers should no longer be necessary.

        • ktr33

Oh god, I was in denial about it being a romper, but it is, isn’t it??

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind the romper but I wish the bust fit better. Those are amazing legs, can’t blame her for wanted to show them off. He looks good, but I wish his tie and pocket square was reversed. That pattern would look like less of an after though in the tie. His pants look just a hair too short. Still the collective pretty of this pair seems to surpass any minor quibbles.

    • msdamselfly

Wow. They are gorgeous. Love their wavy hairdos.

    • GillianHolroyd

This romper does not make her look short and stubby so that makes it a win.

The color of his suit is giving me LIFE.

    • ktr33

Her dress reminds me of a Laura Ashley ball gown (complete with massive detachable bow above the booty) I had in 1987, but cut off mid- high. So, i.e.. not great.
      He looks super.

    • MartyBellerMask

Hollywood in a nutshell. The men get to cover their entire bodies and the ladies get a teensy bit of fabric. Do they hand out throw blankets to the starlets inside the theater? Because seriously. I can not imagine what thermostat setting could accommodate both outfits.

    • Fred Vaughn

It’s her star turn – shortness and wonky decolletage aside, I like…

As for him, the pocket square isn’t as distracting as it could have been mainly because it’s actually color-coordinated with everything else (which is GORGEOUS, in my opinion).

    • saintebeuve

I hadn’t heard of this movie until yesterday and what I did hear was marvelous – and then TLo and behold, this post. Now it’s on the top of the list!

    • LeelaST

So surprised anyone thought this look was appropriate for a RC – especially a “serious film” RC. Daytime/teen awards show look if anything. Loved this film – a must-see imo – great cast (Penelope Wilton for one) and beautiful costumes.

    • FuhUgh

      Formal romper = NO

    • Julieta

Is this an appropriate place to mention that you should absolutely go see and write a review of “Belle”? Because really, it’s a beautiful period piece with things to say about identity and social issues! It’s basically right up TLo’s alley. And she’s fantastic in it (though that romper is awful).

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.com/ Catherine

      Those blue eyes.

Wait, what were we talking about?

    • Lilithcat

      “Formal romper” is an oxymoron.

    • Laura Livingston

Is she really wearing a red carpet onesie? She is still gorgeous but that is bad. He looks great, tho,

    • formerlyAnon

That looks like a sexy romper, which, if such a contradiction-in-terms exists at all, should be for private home viewing only.

    • traceyishere

He looks great but the pants are a tiny bit too short.

    • smh4748

That blue suit is just gorgeous.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

That “over the shoulder” shot is hugely reminiscent of the famous B&W pose of Betty Grable, which, it was said, was present in every US bomber that flew missions in WWII.
Gugu looks amazing from the neck up, but that is one sorry excuse for red carpet wear.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

She’s lovely, but that dress is not. Love her earrings.

    • fursa_saida

She looks like she’s about to start a tap routine.

    • Amel

I think a simple neckline with a clean line would have done wonders for that romper

    • KinoEye

She’s gorgeous, but she’s being upstaged. That is a MAN right there. In a SUIT. Tailored to PERFECTION. BLUE.

      It’s definitely Friday.

    • Synnamin

      is… is… is that a skort jumpsuit?!?

    • e jerry powell

That blue is making my naughty parts do somersaults.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

They’re both very pretty, but he made a better choice than she did.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

He’s near perfect. She’s stunning, but this isn’t the occasion for a fancy romper.

    • demidaemon

He wins, by about a zillion miles. Hate her dress.

    • LadyVimes

I wish hers was floor-length, and even then I don’t think I’d love it. He looks very…blue. Can he go back to what he was wearing in Belle, please? He looked so good in period costume.

    • quiltrx

I think we Bitter Kittens have already put our foot down on this…the RC Romper CANNOT be a thing. Ever.
He looks divine and quite dreamy!

    • FrigidDiva

I think the only person that should wear a romper is Lena Dunham, since she insists on infantalizing all of her looks anyway. That being said I HATE the whole concept of a “romper” on a grown woman. Little girls under the age of 5 look fine in them, but once you’re an adult you should never wear anything called a romper.

    • FridaStaire

Martin should be arrested for this!

    • GillianHolroyd

VERY late to the party but I just saw this movie and, like Tom Hiddleston, he looks *much* better with dark hair!
