Olivia Munn in Peter Pilotto in New York City

Posted on June 24, 2014

Too much? Or just right? We go back and forth.

We absolutely love the top half. We’re trying to talk ourselves into the shoes, because while the yellow is fun, the patent leather is a maybe a bit much. And the shorts? We’re thinking this whole look would come together a bit better if they were black, no?

Still, it’s a pretty damn cute summer-in-the-city street look.

    • kimmeister

She’s in a yellow pumps phase, isn’t she? The shorts could work either in black or white. I think the black would make them look more overtly like a “dress short suit.”

    • Sofia

i think the white shorts keep it summery and daytime. the shoes tip it toward dressy. love the lipstick. i am very pleased with her today!

    • Thomas

Sorry, but I’m laughing because she looks like she smelled a fart in the first photo (I’m immature, I know). I actually kind of like it surprisingly and great choice of shoe. Black would work, but be boring imo.

      • Mod_girl

I think she looks like that in a LOT of pics. It’s not quite “Resting Bitchface”….maybe “Resting Quasi-Sneerface?”

    • Nancer

I think she hired a new stylist! She’s been looking really cute lately!

      • makeityourself

It’s called the Aaron-Rodgers-effect. Anything around him automatically looks better.

      • Jeremiah Capacillo

No wonder she’s been looking great – she recently hired Micaela Erlanger! (stylist to Queen Lupita and Michelle Dockery)

        • decormaven

There you go. I’ve been confused lately – her previous looks have not been good, but the current ones are a huge improvement. Maybe her new style will move her forward on the career path.

          • Jeremiah Capacillo

Apparently, she didn’t use a stylist before Erlanger, in the Blake Lively mode. Starlets, we know you like fashion and clothes like the next girl but look at how big a difference professional help can make!

        • Nancer

That explains it! Thanks for the info!

      • Imasewsure

I thought she was a stylist or something… or at least a “Piperlime Stylist” anyway… a poor woman’s Alexa Chung???? Anyway I really like this look

    • FibonacciSequins

      Don’t like sleeveless jacket-vests. sorry/notsorry

      • kimmeister

        I like sleeveless better than short-sleeved. I had a short-sleeved, double-breasted abomination some time in the 90′s.

        • FibonacciSequins

You make a good point. The short-sleeve jacket ranks with the current sheer-skirt trend for me. Abominations, both of them.

    • JR Labrador

Holy carp, a Pilotto that I actually like. Will wonders never cease?

      • MoHub

Not only a Pilotto that I like, but one that actually understands how the human body is shaped.

    • hughman

Sure, it’s ALL a cute look until you pass out from not breathing while you’re wearing that top.

    • ashtangajunkie

I love this except for the shoes. I don’t think the yellow was the best choice.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        I agree. Pale blue maybe?

        • jtabz

Coming on to say exactly this!

      • MoHub

No problem with the yellow, but I’d prefer a sandal or even a ballet flat or deck shoe to high-heeled pumps.

      • fursa_saida

I think if they were a slightly lighter/greener-toned yellow–more lemon than squash–I would like them here much more.

    • AlisonS

At least the pumps are patent which in my mind are more seasonally asp asp appropriate than suede. Are the shorts supposed to look like a white and blue sky? Cause honestly that’s what I see.

    • Janet B

Cute outfit. I wish she chose to wear sandals,

      • Hysterectomypants

My thoughts exactly. I think the yellow is cute, but a pump with shorts is never not going to look weird to me. Anything strappy, sandal-y or even flat would make everything better.

        • Janet B

Pumps and shorts always look weird to me.

    • Glam Dixie

I like the outfit a lot actually but that face she is making is not ok. She either smelled something bad or her teeth have gotten too big for her mouth.

    • DuBey2

      Its only meh for me.

    • macwell

I think she looks fine as is. Ota Summer in NYC – why not patent let her yellow? When else would she get a chance? :)

    • KT

The top is really cute, but it’s definitely a scrolldown fug. The shorts look too casual, and I can’t with the shoes. So close!

    • TinyDynamo

I cannot with her. She makes everything seem forced and staged. Also I think she matched her shoes to the crossing lights, so there’s that.

      • Kitten Mittons

I’ve liked her in the only thing I’ve seen her in, but have never seen an interview or anything. Just had to say the crossing light comment was dead on. I like the shoes, but they come off as an orangey yellow, at least in the pictures. If they were a lemon yellow, I’d be fanning myself.

    • JP

No to the shiny mustard shoes. If they were sandals, maybe, but not patent leather pumps.

    • demidaemon

It’s okay. I find the print on the top half a bit discombobulating, even though, as a PP, it is quite tame.

    • Anna Vasquez

If the shoes were sandals, or even open-toe, the yellow would be a little less… heavy? If yellow can be said to be heavy? Would have made the whole look perfect, IMO. As it is, it’s still a pretty damn cute look. I’m jealous of her coloring, which would allow her to wear a bright, saturated yellow right near her face.

    • altalinda

Everything except the pumps. Sandals, flats, or sneaks instead.

    • nannypoo

I like the outfit but I think it’s too tight, because she has the top pinned at boob level. I don’t get the shoes at all. The color doesn’t make sense and I hate pumps with casual clothes. She needs sandals or some other more casual option. Do we wear espadrilles? Are they still a thing?

      • ACKtually

Thank you! I immediately noticed the pin.

    • MM4321

Blacks shorts would be too matchy. Outfit is cute. I just never know what it is, exactly, that she does besides walk around looking for photo ops. And she’s nice to look at but loses me whenever I hear her speak.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m going to have to go take my temperature. That top is a Peter Pilotto that I actually like. Maybe it would look better with black shorts

    • livesarah

The colours are perfect, the real problem lies in the fact that she shoes are pointy-toed pumps. She’s not going anywhere in those shoes.

    • SuzyQuzey

      Love it! Needs different shoes.

    • mrspotts66

just right! i love this look on her.

    • lunchcoma

I like the white shorts. Black would be too matchy and heavy with that top, I think, especially for the daytime. I would have liked the yellow better if the shoes were in some other style, but I don’t hate the pumps as they are.

    • GeoDiva

      Cute!

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

      Note perfect, I’d say.

    • marlie

You know what? I love this. I think she looks great. I love the color of the shoes, but I’m not convinced that they’re perfect for this look. But still, it’s fairly minor. And her makeup looks great, which isn’t something we can always say about her.

    • Wendi126

Did she leave her hotel in NYC to pose for pics? No pakkabook or bags. She’s not walking. She’s alone. She doesn’t even have a phone and I see no pockets. Do you think she saw photographers from her window and ran out to stand there? Did she go out and wait for someone to show up? Someone pass the pipe

      • decormaven

Trying to overlay reason and logic on the world of illusion may cause dizziness. Have a wee drinkie til it passes.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Wow, Peter Pilotto designed something cute!!! I need to sit down, I’m dizzy.

    • snarkykitten

If the shorts were a knee-length skirt, then yes, this would be cute.

    • BlairBear

I Wish the shorts were just a few inches longer for proportions sake not propriety

    • Trickytrisha

      Super adorable.

    • MilaXX

Cute outfit but she Lupita’d the shoe

    • Mothra

      I love yellow.

    • gitchygitchymama

that front rise is funky. she however is not. cutie.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

      She’s beautiful….

    • quiltrx

I like, but kill the shoes.
Face/hair are maybe the prettiest I’ve ever considered her. Looks like the Rodgers canoodling suits her.

    • largishbearishAtlish

So she takes off the jacket (made from your moms drapes in the sun room, remember those?) to reveal her tennis top and off she goes! Some sneakers (in Tay-tays purse ). Some footies with the little fuzzy balls on the back and voila! Time for tennis at the club!

    • unbornfawn

      yes

    • Alexis Boucher

On a non fashion note, I was always kind of “meh” about her just based on her appearances on this site. I saw her interview on the Today show at lunch in the break room today and she was funny and relaxed on camera. It looked cute sitting down. Which kind of seems like a backhanded compliment.

    • Gatto Nero

How about a sandal? I just don’t get the pumps-with-shorts aesthetic. (But I don’t get the “dress shorts” concept, either.)

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

If this were an “in or out” vote I would definitely vote her IN. Easy, breezy cover girl look, even though the shoes are wrong. I would have opted for an icy blue flat.

    • Jaeda Laurez

The shoes are wrong. But I like everything else.

    • Cortney Dean

The sports geek and native Wisconsinite in me thinks she picked the yellow pumps as a not-so-subtle homage to the Green Bay Packers and ipso facto Aaron Rodgers. Because that is the only way they make sense. She would be the best dressed WAG in Lambeau though. Where is THAT reality show!?!?!

      • Patricia Groves Dobrowski

I keep noticing that. In several of the last appearances, she’s either done subtle or full-out green & gold. Makes me a happy cheesehead.

    • Filmjen

I love those shoes, but I’m not sure about them with that particular green. The obvious choice seems to be silver or pewter, but if you have to go neon, possibly blue or fuschia?

    • Melmmmendes

      I miss her short hair.

    • frannyprof

Are starlets just running around NYC these days? Are the acting/singing/awarding gigs so scarce these days?

    • lilibetp

I don’t really like the yellow shoes. Maybe some sandals would work better?

    • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Top is too tight…shoes are wrong, shorts better in black…

    • http://www.marthinesatris.com Tina

I love it! Great colors, looks easy breezy.

    • smh4748

I like this. I thought it looked cute in the thumbnail, but I saw it was a Peter Pilotto, and I steeled myself for some abhorrent skirt that made zero sense. It’s been awhile since I’ve been so surprised, and so pleasantly!

    • mmebam

      Just right!

    • uprightcitizen

Cute. And very real-world. I know a bunch of women who would like to wear this, and could pull it off. If she had on a sandal with just an inch of wedge, she could go anywhere in this in SoCal.

    • Clash D

And here I was bracing for yet another Peter Pilotto Horrorprints Extravaganza…only to scroll down and see – nothing? For a split second my entire world felt so. empty.

      She needs a braclet.

    • St. Ace

Why does her face look she’s sneering in most of these pictures? Is she squinting?
I think part of the reason Olivia’s outfits don’t work is because she herself isn’t sold on them either. She’s not communicating, “Look how great I look today!” she has the demeanor more of “Let’s get this over with.”

    • kmk05

      Summery! Love everything about this.

    • MoHub

I’m good with all but the shoes. Love the color but would prefer a more summery, casual style—maybe a sandal.

    • JaymeKay

Black shorts would make it look like some sort of Car-Hop uniform.

    • MoHub

I’m shocked that this is Pilotto and actually has an inkling of what a body is shaped like.

    • MarissaLG

Yeah, really not a fan of those shoes. They look cheap and tacky and I’m sure they’re neither. I’d go for a black or black/white wedge sandal.

    • Jessica Freeman

The shoes are a huge needle scratch. I think a royal blue would have been much nicer.

    • RescueMe23

Her (or her stylist’s) shoe choices are ruining each and every look! Stop it!! Just stop it!!!

    • http://www.lindamerrill.com/ Linda Merrill

Very cute. Love the white shorts. Black shorts with the patent yellow pumps would be good for evening. Perhaps yellow espadrilles or wedges for daytime with the white shorts would be the way to go. But it’s adorable.

    • Danielle

Not a completely offensive Pilotto, and I like the pairing with the shorts. Casual and breezy.

    • KinoEye

Yep, the shorts are the only real problem with this look. Black would’ve been the best choice, I think, because when it’s white it looks a little rumply. Looks like she either got a MUA who understands her coloring, or told them NEVER to use that awful orange lipstick again under penalty of death.

    • Lily

I could never be a celebrity. I absolutely loathe “dressy” casual for errand-running. Of course, I’m not being paid to wear designers’ clothes while papped for the tabloids, either. Give me an Emma stone sundress and funky hat and I’m much happier. That said, the outfit is really cute for a country club ladies’ lunch.

    • boweryboy

The shoes take it into “too much” territory, but from the ankles up it’s just right. I honestly can’t believe I’m saying that about Peter Pilotto.

    • Kbear

The top would be cute if it was a bit bigger and there wasn’t that sloppy “safety pin” job above the button. It might not be a safety pin, but whatever it is is ruining the line of the collar and enhancing the fact that the top is too small for her bustline. Yellow patent leather shoes with shorts. Not good.

      • Lex

ooh good catch! I noticed the pulling too but thought there were two buttons. I think you are right that there is a safety pin in there upon closer inspection. It ruins the fit of the top, whatever it is.

    • mdcoon127

      The shoes are awful

    • ThaliaMenninger

I’m ok with the top and shorts, but the shoes are a big no for me.

    • suzq

Black shorts would be fantastic. I would like a better fit on that top. I think Olivia is now the Pilotto whisperer.

    • colorjunky

I think the proportions are off. Because the top is wide, the bottom needs to be narrow, maybe white or black peg pants. I don’t mind the yellow, but what’s wrong with sandals in the summer?

    • Zeee

Damn. I thought I liked it, but your comments are totally right. That’s why you guys are the masters.

    • MightyMarshal

Love. Prefer the white shorts to the suggested black. Would have gone with a cobalt blue for the shoe rather than that canary yellow, though.

    • Imasewsure

OOH just right.. and I hate Pilotto… or at least I have lately

    • GillianHolroyd

It’s all too contrived. The shorts too casual, the shoes too formal, and pretending to be out and about in the city without a handbag is ludicrous.

    • Lex

The shirt is a tad tight- the buttons are pulling. The shorts bug– huge issue with them. The whole crotch area seems bulging yet baggy– totally unflattering. I agree black, preferably sleek and fitted, shorts would improve this vastly. The shoes would be great with black shorts but with the white ones, they stick out as just being odd. That being said, she looks great in that color green.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I love the look. She ‘s gorgeous. I swear, if I looked like her, I’d be able to have sex with all the guys I’ve always been attracted to.

    • Sara Brams-Miller

Her makeup looks amazing. And I kinda like the outfit.

    • Anna

Beautiful from the waist up. I have said before, and I will say it again, no more with the dress-up shorts!

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I think she looks great. Love the shoes!

    • Lilithcat

That’s a really cute outfit, even if it’s not very citified. I like the white shorts. But I do think the high heels are a bit too much. I wouldn’t mind a more casually-designed yellow patent leather flat, though.

    • Elizabeth Szubert

I’d be okay with the shorts if they were an inch or two longer. They seem to be too short on her legs but yet okay on the model.

    • bluefish

Cute. I’ve decided, suddenly, that I really don’t like bright yellow pumps.

    • Ann

Love the outfit, but I sure hope that button and pin don’t pop! Looks like they are being stretched to the breaking point.

    • ktr33

This is the 2nd shorts-vest-suit she’s worn in a few weeks. Her feet look tortured, and the patent is wrong for the outfit. Would some wedge espadrilles be *too* resort? I think I can’t stand the classic pointy pump with shorts look. All I see is Rizzo at the end-of-the-year carnival. And either the fit or the color of the shorts is giving me the teeniest diaper vibe.

    • Kikishua

I’d like to see the top with long thin silver grey trousers.

    • JynxTheCat

      Julie your cruise director. No.
