Olivia Munn in J. Mendel at the 2014 Guys’ Choice Awards

Posted on June 09, 2014

We’re not the biggest fans of tricky skirts – especially tricky leather skirts – but we’re digging this one, for some reason.

Mendel midnight forest halter top and leather skirt from the Fall 2014 collection paired with a Monica Rich Kosann clutch, Brian Atwood gold pumps, and EF Collection jewelry.

It does kind of look like a leather tablecloth from the front, but the shape and the color look really great on her. It’s a shame that the top half of the dress looks like an after thought. A skirt like that asks for something simpler than that up top. And it looks a little disheveled. Oh, well. It’s not a bad entry in the “trying to look hot and chic at the same time” sweepstakes. Love the shoes – but the non-matching gold clutch really makes our eyelids twitch. Far be it for us to argue in favor of matching all your accessories, but you do need to be careful with competing metallics or blacks.

The pin-straight, center-parted hair became, shall we say, over-represented in recent years, but it suits her perfectly.

That is one sloppy hole on that top.

But I like it overall, and I like her. She’s surprisingly good on The Newsroom.

      • Carleenml

she’s my girl crush because of Newsroom. Having said that, I hate these shoes.

    • Peri7473

the golds seem identical to me. what am i missing? and i actually dont like the gold in the shoes. to me, that shiny gold looks cheap.

      • MilaXX

It may just be the lightening, but that upper picture the shoes look like a soft gold and the bag looks more bolder & brass colored.

    • misstressofsylar

remove the peekaboo and I’m totally on board with this. I’ve always been meh on her but I can finally see the appeal with this.

    • In_Stitches

Totally with you on the hair; it looks chic on her. She tends to be a bit of a try hard and an easier style like that is so refreshing.

    • LadyVimes

She’s baring her teeth at us. Rrrrrr.

    • SuzyQuzey

Hate the shoes. Bad 1980s flashback.

    • kimmeister

This might be the best I’ve ever seen her look. The makeup, for once, looks good. The ring neck is quite flattering on her shoulders.

      • kmk05

Couldn’t agree more. She’s hitting all the right notes, and that has to be a first.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind this look. In fact I mostly like it. I’m still not sold on the neutral lip on her but her makeup as a whole rarely looks this good. The competing golds of the bag and shoe are a little distracting, but she’s doing much better on the style front.

      • Little_Olive

The clutch needed to be in a color. Chartreuse? Muted turquoise?

    • Dany

Bringing some olive toned Mona Lisa goes to a cocktail club realness. I think if she got rid of the keyhole this would hit it out of the ball park, but I can’t deny that she looks drop dead stunning .

    • Anna

Her boobs aren’t in some kind of harness. I’d say this is a personal best for her. Love the colour.

    • Danielle

Does she have any other faces, I wonder? Adele Dazeem can lend her services.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Looks good to me. Thank heavens Kim K didn’t get it first!

      • Little_Olive

Think of where the slit would end on Kim, plus KanYE (as they utter it) would have combined it with some multi-ankle-strap contraption of a shoe. Can’t unsee now.

    • Mothra

I like it, but those shoes have to go. In a fire.

    • demidaemon

I don’t mind the skirt, actually, but that top is doing nothing for her boobs. Overall, this is about a 6, which for Olivia is quite good, considering her track record.

    • Call me Bee

She look fabulous here. As she’d better, to hang on to our sweet Aaron Rodgers (who broke a million hearts here in Packerland when they started dating.)

    • livesarah

I really don’t like anything but the colour.

    • ClioBC

Finally! I figured out who she reminds me of/looks like! A brunette Jenna Elfman!

    • BLauD

I can not help but feel like she stood up from her poolside patio table and is losing her leather dinner napkin. It’s just all a bit bizarre.

    • Jaeda Laurez

She looks fabulous here- the green looks lovely with her skin tone. Way better than anything I’ve seen her in lately. And I don’t mind the non-matchy gold- maybe it’s my computer, but I can’t really tell.

    • Little_Olive

      Someone got their eyebrows DONE.

    • prisma

That angled flap on the skirt looks like it probably peels apart with velcro.

      • ktr33

        It’s a breakaway.

    • Imasewsure

I think she looks amazing. Love it all (except the clutch which I hate)

    • d4divine

      Wicked…the lost hot sister witch

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I think this is the skirt Nicole Beharie’s one from a recent post wanted to be.

    • E. D.

Love the green, but hate the shoes.

    • lilazander

I LOVE the skirt; want to have it!

    • carnush

That is so her color. Gorgeous.

    • seventeenwest

I guess she looks good in Packers’ colors…

    • decormaven

Needed a better shoe- something in same range as clutch. On the whole, much improved style for her.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That is a fantastic color for leather. I would love a pair of boots that color of green. The skirt’s nice, too. And I don’t mind the top.

    • MarissaLG

She can’t sit in that dress though- can she?

    • crash1212

Might be a personal best for Miss Olivia, who gets it so wrong so often. That color really does sing on her.

    • Kristin

I hope this doesn’t come across as a terrible thing to say, but this is the first time I’ve ever thought Olivia Munn was pretty. The way that color complements her skin tone and brings out the gold and green in her eyes is just stunning. I think that skirt is amazing, but agree that a simpler top would have been better.

    • Kbear

Good job to J. Mendel for matching the halter fabric to the leather skirt color. That isn’t easy to do. However, the top seems skimpy (and wrinkled). If the neck band of the shirt would have been a bit thicker – maybe in the leather – it would have been able to hold up the fabric of the halter better and would have looked like a complete outfit.

    • marlie

This is one of her better looks (though with some issues), but dark green, quilted leather does not = summer to me.

    • KT

I actually love the whole thing – she looks great. Cool, interesting dress that is flattering and really suits her. Risk reward.

She should really wear autumnal colors more often, they look wayyyy better on her than the jaundice yellows and various neons she tends to prefer.

    • aquamarine17

i would love to see a different top with that great skirt. it would look good with a white top. the look might be perfect with that. a larger handbag would be nice too

    • mickiemonkey

I think she looks fantastic in a natural Ali McGraw way.

    • queen b*tch

I love this unashamedly. And thats not something I get to say very often when it comes to our girl Olivia here.
