Nicole Kidman in Giambattista Valli Couture at the 2014 CMT Music Awards

Posted on June 05, 2014

This is the moment every lady star hopes and prays for in their career:

Nicole-Kidman-Giambattista-Valli-Couture-2014-CMT-Music-Awards-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Nicole Kidman attends the 2014 CMT Music Awards at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee in a Giambattista Valli couture embroidered silk dress paired with Elie Saab shoes.

Stepping out on a red carpet in couture, looking like you’re about to squat and pee. It’s the Hollywood dream, darlings.  Grace Kelly revisited. Remember all those times she squatted and peed in front of photographers? They just don’t make glamour like that anymore. She was our American Princess. Sigh.

Did she actually have that pseudo-slip added to the hem? Not that the runway version is superior somehow – because even the runway model looks like she’s setting to squat n’ pee soon – but we fail to see how that little modesty panel improves things.

And the really annoying part is, if they’d just put a plain old hem on this dress it would look pretty gorgeous. No, it wouldn’t push any envelopes or anything, but maybe this isn’t the style of dress for envelope-pushing, y’know? Let a pretty dress just be a pretty dress instead of futzing around with it for no good reason.

Oh dear. We’ve started the day off harummphing and finger-wagging. This might not be a good sign, kittens.

    • Mothra

Yucky. Looks like she’s wearing an ill-fitted flowery pillowcase over a sleek black tube dress.

    • Carrie

The dress kind of looks cheap on its own, but that modesty hem looks absolutely ridiculous. If you have to add a modesty hem, then maybe you should just keep looking instead.

      • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

        Well said.

      • Raspberry2012

        Yup!

      • kimmeister

It might’ve worked had the dress hem been flat, and the added panel been of similar size of the black strip up top. (I recently added a black ribbon to a dress to make it longer, but the dress already had black ribbon of similar width at the waist so no one was the wiser.) As it was done here, not working.

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

That does indeed look like a hugely failed attempt to modest up that napkin of a dress. A star of her caliber should never, ever allow this to occur.

    • Anna

I had a ball skirt in the ’90s lined with that fabric. It was NOT Giambattista Valli couture.

    • Lilithcat

You wouldn’t be TLo if you didn’t harummph and finger-wag!

    • StillGary

      FUTZING for the win!

    • MarissaLG

Maybe the caffeine just hasn’t kicked in yet, but I don’t really see what’s so wrong with this. It’s not outrageously fabulous by any means, but I think it looks nice on her and the blue flowers really pop.

      • Erica

It’s not just you. I clearly need to start drinking the coffee I just made, as I think she looks pretty cute. The hair is silly, but that’s par for the course with red carpet hair lately.

    • FibonacciSequins

Why didn’t she just leave it off and wear the black dress on its own? How bizarre.

I’m also confused by her hair. I guess it’s pinned up somehow in the back, but the result is it appears half her hair is missing.

    • JR Labrador

At least it distracts from the hair.

      • MoHub

        And the face.

        • lovelyivy

It’s all I ever notice about her these days. Her poor face!

          • MoHub

I fear she’ll eventually have it stretched so taut, the skin will begin pulling away from her skull.

        • kimmeister

I actually thought it was looking fairly settled in here, compared to other outings recently.

      • NBG

Thank you. I was hoping someone was going to mention the hair. WTH? Over-processed, Mad Men-era tease fest. Her hair people have some explaining to do.

    • TinyDynamo

From the thumbnail I thought this was going to be a young Disney starlet. Nope, it’s Nicole Kidman, dressed like a child trying to look grown up sexy. Fail.

    • deelup

The dress is odd. But the shape is great on her. Her hair and makeup are lovely. And thankfully, with all due respect, her face looks more natural.

    • @Biting Panda

She looks so uncomfortable that it makes me uncomfortable.

    • bunnydiet

Why would a woman waste that gorgeous body in a fancy Hefty bag?

    • crash1212

Not seeing your vision…and kind of happy about that this morning. I think the black on the bottom balances the black on the top and I like Nicole’s version better. She looks pretty.

    • LadyVimes

Tulip Hems (this is what I’m calling them because I don’t know what they’re actually called) annoy me. Adding the black panel makes it marginally better, but not to a great extent. It’s still a tulip hem.

    • NMMagpie

That black slip makes me think of all the soccer moms who make sure their daughters are wearing slider shorts under their prom dresses.

    • GillianHolroyd

The dress, as shown on the model, is clearly For Standing Only. Also, the black edging at the top is not symmetrical. I don’t mind the hiked-up hemline, if only it were longer. The black underskirt looks like an afterthought.

    • B_C_J

I like the fabric but the design is awkward & became more so when they added the modesty panel. The hair is not my favorite either.

    • decormaven

If the original design has to undergo such a major alteration, why not find a more appropriate choice? Nic has her pick of designers, so it’s not like she’s limited to one couture house. A positive: I do like the shape of the dress on her.

    • majorbedhead

Blech. Maybe if the dress had been floor length? I don’t know. It still would have just been a pretty dress, but it wouldn’t have been an idiotic pretty dress.

    • RussellH88

It’s not really that great of a dress in general. The seams and folds look all wonky.

I wish she’d leave her face alone.

    • Danielle

If there was ever a place to add a modesty napkin, I’m not sure the CMAs were it.

    • Joey Melliza

      I peety her

    • Dany

The runway version has an ugly and hideous hem.

    • Jess White

What idiot gives Nicole Kidman dramatic cat’s-eye eyeliner and a super pale face? It’s like she’s going to a Halloween party made up as Nicole Kidman.

    • Lily

I don’t see the dress because I can’t stop trying to figure out just what has been nipped and what has been bo-tucked.

    • ktr33

Oh, MAN! Before I got the scroll-down needle-scratch, I thought we were going to have an attagirl for Niki. I was imagining this extraordinary blue (?), flowered (?) strapless ball gown Audrey wears in Funny Face. Alas.

      • ballerinawithagun

        Wouldn’t that have been wonderful!!!

    • Raspberry2012

I don’t mind the modesty panel so much, but they should have just done it in white or in the same floral print. As far as my eyes can see, there’s no black anywhere in that dress, so this big random panel of black to cover the lady bits is just odd.

      • MilaXX

There’s the trim at the top

    • MilaXX

She should have use the same floral pattern to extend the dress. This looks homemade.

    • ashtangajunkie

      RED BOB PLEASE.

      Sorry. Her hair. I hate.

    • SewingSiren

      Positively ghoulish.

    • numenah

This is what happens when you’ve tortured your curls by relentlessly straightening/flat ironing them. Her poor hair looks fried.

    • Kent Roby

“One more facelift and she’ll have a beard”

      • kimmeister

        What’s that a quote from?

        • Kent Roby

          AbFab

    • FuhUgh

If the bottom hem addition had been the same white of the dress, this would have worked. Sigh. Hope the rumors about Keith and her are not true. I’d like to see their relationship succeed.

    • stubbornthoughts

I like this. WHAT’S HAPPENED TO ME?

      • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

        It’s okay; you’re not alone

    • Imasewsure

Missed opportunity. Such a pretty fabric

    • Cheryl

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought, oh this will be pretty, even though I wasn’t on board with the black trim. I even like the weird origami folds, but would have liked to see those crazy folds go all the way down to the floor in a long gown.

There is something about a dress that could have been so gorgeous, that is more disappointing then something just plain bad.

    • GorgeousThings

Dress aside, Nic, honey, for the love of Christ, LEAVE YOUR FACE ALONE!

    • suzq

Except it’s not a pretty dress. It’s just some pretty fabric cut out and wrapped around a body awkwardly.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

A straight-across hem at the bottom and this would have been a perfectly serviceable pretty dress. As-is, it looks like a towel that’s a bit too small to close cleanly in the front getting all rucked up. Where are your jewels, darling? You look positively naked without them.

    • OffToSeeHim

I can’t get over how much her face has changed over the years. It’s just sad now. And worse, it’s all wrong for the young, summery style of the dress. If you want to go “trying too hard aging lady-star,” you’ve got to change your wardrobe.

    • boweryboy

“Let a pretty dress just be a pretty dress instead of futzing around with it for no good reason.”

I think this is the problem with a lot of designers at the moment. They just can’t leave well enough alone. Raf Simons I’m looking at you.

    • marlie

I don’t hate it, but I think the top layer of the skirt should have been simplified if they were going to add the “modesty panel.”

    • Ashleigh

This looks hideous – like a dress over a dress. Who let her out of the house looking like this? Hideous I tell you!

    • Mr. J.

“My little black dress looked boring, so I grabbed this piece of pretty material with little fringey things and wrapped it around me, and….and….and I don’t know what I’m doing. Do you like my hair?”

    • Man Dala

Her face and, more specifically, her forehead are so wrong on so many levels… I don’t know what to say.

    • demidaemon

It’s the CMTs. i can think of no other award show where a squat and be would be more appropriate.

That dress is all kinds of dumb.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

Nicole’s lovely face looks okay again. And I quite like this look. Pretty. I only noticed the underthing by its absence on themodel. Nice look, Nicole.

    • Little_Olive

This fried-hair, child-pose, terribly-dressed woman is too far a cry from Nicole’s golden era. Cate, please never do this to us.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

A simple, symmetrical hem would have made this a lovely dress, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a pretty dress. Not every appearance has to have earthshaking, cutting edge fashion with a capital F.

    • quiltrx

I saw the pics last night and thought it looked like a dress over a dress, which is dumb. And like the really pretty white/blue one got all static clingy over the really cheap black one.

    • Akemi

      I like the shoes.
