Mindy Kaling in New York City

Posted on June 20, 2014

It’s such a cute dress and she looks so very pleased with herself that we feel a little bad having to say this but… No, Mindy.

Mindy-Kaling-GOTS-NYC-GSD-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Mindy Kaling out in Soho, New York.

No. We just want to yank on your hem, which would get us arrested, of course.

A question (although the answer will not affect our “no”): Is this dress designed to look like it’s riding up like crazy or is it actually riding up like crazy? As we said, it’s wrong either way, but we wonder if it’s actually pleated to look like that. And the only reason we ask is because she seems so blissfully unconcerned about it. There’s no way, if her dress was riding up that much, that she wouldn’t know it, right?

In less bitchy news, her makeup and accessories look great.

Her make-up game is always on point, but that dress looks moldy as hell.

      • Sara P.

Gonna have to disagree with you (about her makeup game, you’re completely right about the moldy dress), based on the last time she appeared here on TLo.

        • dustinrhodes

Her make-up game is almost never, ever on point; because she insists on a layer if Vaseline almost every single time — the above photo not withstanding.

        • marlie

You’re right. Her makeup is usually too heavy and/or too shiny. This is actually the best her makeup has ever looked. I’m pleased about that.

          • Fuchsiaforever

She most be reading our campaign about her greasy face….now If only Maggie Gyllenhaal would listen…..

          • demidaemon

Me too. Glad to see she finally pacified the beast: her MUA.

          • P M

What is up with that harsh gold highlight thingy she’s put all over her face??

            • marlie

              Here? I don’t see it.

        • Candigirl1968

I think this further highlights the problem – her makeup in natural light looks light years different from when it is seen under red carpet lights. Her person needs to learn to make the adjustment.

      • KateM

Actually, I was going to post that this is the first time I think I’ve ever thought her makeup looked nice.

    • Lilah

Bummer that it is riding up on her because otherwise it would be super cute.

      • KES4K

This is why I err on the side of buying clothes that are too big – I hate hate hate stuff that rides up.

        • P M

It’s also what I’ve noticed a lot in stretch. Some of it starts to curl up almost.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

I agree,it is cute and perfect for summer. She is tying to be cheery about it, but i bet she is cringing inside at the thought of that dress riding up so badly in not one, but two, spots.

    • housefulofboys

If she’s wearing powerful shapewear, it’s quite possible that she is unaware that it’s riding up so much. And, no, I cannot believe that it was designed that way.

    • ChiKat67

Uncle’s, her dress is definitely riding up. Her instagram photos show no weird pleating…

    • SophiaPehawkins

I don’t want to live in a world where a dress is intentionally supposed to ride up like that. She has a good sense of style, but they (Mindy and her stylist) do not pick very flattering pieces.

      • MilaXX

That’s what I don’t get. Even if your shapewear kept you from feeling it riding up, you’d think she would notice the dress is now noticeably shorter.

        • SophiaPehawkins

I’ve never worn any sort of undergarment like spanx, but I can’t imagine she can’t feel it, even a little bit.

        • Nicole

My mom always says that if something is riding up or your heel breaks, suck it up and pretend like it isn’t happening, otherwise you’ll just draw more attention to it. It works in a world when you’re not being photographed constantly :P

          • littlemac8

Yes, I tend to agree with your mom. If Mindy is pulling and tugging her dress down does that just make it more obvious?

      • random_poster

In that case, she’s just oblivious to it riding up, and TLo would indeed be arrested for making the proper adjustment (although she’d look 1000x better).

      • Anna

I’m very fascinated by this phenomenon of things ALWAYS looking better on Mindy on her Instagram. Every time we bemoan her style here, someone will always post, “Oh, but her makeup looked SOO much better on Instagram!” or “Why can’t she wear the outfits she posts on her Instagram?”

        • SophiaPehawkins

I agree! I get that she screens those pictures and posts the most flattering, but sometimes it’s drastically different. This one in particular looked flattering as hell in the picture she posted on her Instagram.

        • MilaXX

It’s true, either she is the queen of the selfie or she’s under some really bad mojo.

        • marlie

I wonder if it’s because the photos from Instagram are taken the second she finishes getting ready, so her hair and makeup are fresh, and she’s had assistants or stylists make sure that her clothes are smoothed out, etc. But then, by the time she gets into the car, drives to the event, and spends however long standing on the red carpet in whatever weather might be going on, her hair has wilted, maybe she’s sweating a bit to make her makeup shiny, and her dress has ridden up. I can get that maybe she doesn’t want to be seen adjusting her clothes, but I’d always RATHER see that, because at least she’s aware that her clothes aren’t the way that they should be.

          • Anna

I think you’re right! I’d probably do the same if I were her, to be honest (I hate having my picture taken and almost universally cringe at all photos of myself, so I do get excited when there’s the odd unicorn out of the bunch that happens once every decade).

I don’t feel bad for celebrities by any means, but in that particular case, I totally get wanting to capture the best moments if she’s posting them for her social media. Image management and all that!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

This is why clutches are stupid. She doesn’t have a free hand to pull down her skirt.

      • Heather

Agreed. I have a Ted Baker printed clutch that I LOVE but it drives me crazy ’cause I’m always having to carry it around, like a Trapper Keeper or something. Plus I’m terrified about losing any purse that isn’t attached to my body. But, it’s hard to find an evening purse that isn’t a clutch.

      • MilaXX

sure you can, you do and arm tuck and yank that dress in line. Easy peasy.

      • kimmeister

        Or hold her umbrella.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Oh. It’s riding up like crazy. Probably it was done on purpose to create the ‘mini’ effect. I know I’ve done this quite a number of times but what I usually do is hike up the dress than discreetly cover the rumples with a skinny belt.

    • hillmad

I think she needed to go up a size. Hate the sleeves with a passion.

      • Constant Reader

I agree. Up a size and this would probably be really cute. Although the sleeves would still be problematic.

    • Anique Ashraf

Not gonna lie, kind of love her a tiny bit more for not caring if it’s riding up (if it is unintentional).

    • Glam Dixie

It looks too small and the sleeves are giving the optical illusion of arm fat rolls. This girl has poor style instincts and I hate those shoes too.

      • Glam Dixie

On the plus side, her makeup is not terrifying today so good job.

        • schadenfreudelicious

Yes, her usual super shiney face seems to have been dispatched, baby steps…

      • FrauKrissie

I had the same exact thought about the sleeves. That color on the sleeve hem matches her skin tone way too much and it looks weird.

      • mellorcr

I was thinking more like the illusion that giant hunks of skin are peeling off her arms.

        • Glam Dixie

Yeah, either way, I’m pretty sure that isn’t what she was going for.

      • scoobynacks

To me that dress makes it look like Mindy volunteered to do the ‘saw a woman in half’ trick and when they put her back together, there were some hiccups.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I love living in a world where Mindy Kaling owns her very own Umbrella Holder Boy.

    • Dave Hime

This dress looks very “make something out of the workroom fabric remnants” to me. But I like how happy she seems.

    • http://vispreeve.tumblr.com/ Den Milano

She looks cute and I love the print but something is terribly wrong with the shape of that dress. Also – I don’t like the shoes.

    • http://mhleader.com Meg Leader

Seems to me she always wears dresses that are 3 or 4 inches too short to look good on her, as well as being 1 size too small. She’s so cute and curvy but she chooses looks that make her look off-proportion and pudgy. I think she’s so adorable–wish she’d learn to dress better. If she brought most of her hems down to the top of the knee it would be a good start. And got it in a size that fits her.

      • RussellH88

Yeah, I think she picks interesting clothes, but they usually look a bit tight or short.

      • oldscrumby

I’m willing to bet that’s a side effect of her height. The trade-off with short people, especially bigger short people, is that either you get something where the waist/ darts/ hems all hit where they’re supposed to, or you get something actually big enough for your boobs/belly/shoulders/etc. She wouldn’t be the first person to opt for too tight over sack-of-potatoes.

        • gefeylich

But…isn’t that the point of tailoring? If she gets her clothes directly from the designers, can’t they (or someone else) alter them so that they actually fit her body? Legions of other people show up on these pages in runway clothes with shortened or lengthened hems, sleeves that have been removed or added, etc. etc. I don’t get why Kaling can’t do the same. She’d look a lot better.

          • Heather

I agree. I get stuff altered and (obviously) I am not a movie star.

          • oldscrumby

O.k. this is just silly. A couple of hours spent perusing this site alone should be enough to show than many stars do not or cannot get whatever they’re wearing tailored to them as it should. It’s unfair to specifically call Kaling out for failing to do what most everyone else fails to do.

    • Raspberry2012

      Oh, hell no.

    • MoHub

The sleeves make her arms look four times their actual size.

      • decormaven

        My first thought as well.

    • thecitysleeps

The sleeves are worse than the riding up…as does the moss that seemed to have grown on her boobs. Honestly, I think riding up of tight dresses is a problem we curved girls need to deal with often.

      • GorgeousThings

ITA. There’s something weird as hell about the sleeves. In that second umbrella shot, it looks like her arms are bulging in weird ways, because of the lighting and the brown on the sleeves.

    • BlairBear

I love that shot of her and her umbrella holder

    • smh4748

Atta girl on the makeup. Her face looks great, and those earrings are really fun.

    • LadyVimes

Yank that hem and give the girls some proper support, dear. Infrastructure makes all the difference.

    • http://fatshionwasteland.com/ christina

i’m pretty sure that it’s accidentally riding up (as it happens sometimes) and not intentional. this is one of her better looks IMO so to me this definitely gets an “attagirl” even with the flappy capsleeve.

    • maretha2

I like the idea of this dress on Mindy … but the execution is sad. She’s so cute and this dress is fighting with that rather accentuating it. But her head looks fantastic. Great hair and makeup.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

It’s not pulling at the hips so maybe it’s a whacky design detail that makes no goddam sense? I dunno, this shit’s odd.

    • FancyPhilly

Saw the dress as she posted it on Instagram. It is hella riding up here. PS. Hate her shoes.

    • J.W.

I can’t tell…are there clear plastic straps on those shoes?

      • RussellH88

The way the shoe is made looks awkward, like her big toes could make a run for it at any time.

        • J.W.

Indeed. I guess that’s why those clear plastic straps are there. Clear plastic on feet always looks cheap to me. Then there are the “pickled pigs feet” shoes… :)

    • FibonacciSequins

No, it’s not intentionally pleated. She’s just wearing a dress one, maybe two sizes too small for her. Shame, because it’s a cute dress. At least she looks happy. Her hair and makeup are A+.

    • suzq

The pleats are intentional and the dress is not riding up. The dress is way, way, way too tight.

      • FibonacciSequins

I just wrote the opposite. Are you sure? That somehow makes it all worse.

      • housefulofboys

See other comments. Apparently she posted an instagram photo without “pleats.”

    • Kerry

I appreicate that she always really likes what she is wearing even if it’s not perfectly flattering. Which trumps some knockout outfit on someone who doesn’t care.

    • Therese G.

My buns are squirming in sympathy.

    • Kate

she posted selfies on facebook (yes, I follow her….) and the dress looked adorable – not too tight and not riding up like this at all. Her makeup looks great in these pictures. Her hair was super cute, before she hit the heat and humidity of outdoors, as well.

    • GorgeousThings

The dress is definitely riding up. It should be down to just above the knee, and it’s too small through the waist and torso. Fabric is ‘lazy’, and it will move rather than stretch, even knits. That’s what you see here. She’s as cute as a button, but she needs a better tailor.

    • Sara

This is the Clover Canyon Huntington Gardens dress. The CC website is crap so I can’t link to it, but the dress for sure was not meant to ride up like that.

    • Town

The brown in her sleeve blends with the brown in her arm and make it look like fat is bubbling out of her sleeves. No bueno.

    • Jessica Freeman

I do not find this dress cute, even if it was yanked down. It seems like she just got out of a car…which could explain her hiked up dress and lack of awareness.

    • mimi

No, she posted a picture of it to Instagram and it did not ride up like that. Between the purse, the phone, and having to smile for the camera, I guess she didn’t notice?

      • MilaXX

How on earth does your dress do that and you’re not aware?

        • mjude

          thank you

    • MilaXX

If it wasn’t for the stupid pleats/folds I’d like this look.

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

So glad to see her makeup people are treating her right, finally.

    • marlie

That print is doing horrible things to the proportion of her body. I feel bad for her; I really want her to get it right on a consistent basis. She’s cute and talented, and loves fashion, but she or her people have terrible style instincts.

    • Jennelle

The fact that the color of the edge of her sleeves exactly matches her skin tone is doing her no favors…. From a distance it looked like she had bad, weird armpit folds… and no one wants that…

    • http://twitter.com/growinspirals rachael hodder

she looks cute, but the print on that dress is so ugly. what is it?

    • Mona_Visa

Dresses *can’t* be made like that ON PURPOSE. Right? What’s next?? Dresses with dangling price tags we aren’t supposed to cut off?? I can only take so much ironic fashion in one lifetime.

I need coffee. I love you Mindy!!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Love Mindy’s hair and makeup, am very puzzled by the construction of the dress. Like my dear uncles, I want to know: is the dress riding up on Mindy, or is it constructed with those (odd to my eyes) horizontal pleats at the waist?

    • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Baby, it’s a shade too tight, and those puffy sleeves are doing you no favors. But everything else is lovely and suits you.

    • traceyishere

      Go up a size!

    • Lily

Love the dress as a whole, and the look had promise when all I saw of the photo was the waist up, but Mindy, let’s talk curvy girl to curvy girl for a second… A-lines are your friend. You’re welcome, Auntie Lily.

    • Lily

Oh, and dear Uncles… do we know this dress’s designer, please?

      • alyce1213

From her Instagram: Styled by my bar@Hayley_Atkin_ Dress is @clovercanyon,@aldo_shoes, earrings are @dovesjewelry, ring is Truth be Told.

She gave the name of the stylist too! That person should never work again.

        • Lily

Agree. I like the dress in spirit, but the fit is terrible!

    • ScarlettHarlot

I think this is a personal best for her make-up. She’s finally not shiny!

    • Wink

If you have to repeatedly tug/pull/adjust any garment, then it is the wrong size. The dress should ‘skim’ over her body instead of clinging like plastic wrap.

    • AmeliaEve

Mindy is not much taller than I am. The waistline in this dress just doesn’t hit her natural waist in the right place because the torso is too long. She can pull it down all she wants, but that will put the narrowest part of the dress around her hips, and it will just slide back up again. This is why separates are the short-waisted girl’s best friend.

    • MarieLD

Adorable. Now go up a size. No one sees the size tag.

    • Mothra

I love the front of the bodice and the hem but the middle is all wackadoo. It looks like it is purposefully sewn to look like it is riding up. The sleeves also are weird–like they are made out of toasted marshmallow. I just love her, but man she needs a better stylist.

      • Tami from Seattle

And the color at the edge of the sleeve blends too much with her skin tone. From a distance it looks like she has a wonky arm-pleat. Neck up she looks awesome!!

    • mmhmm

Love the dress…it just needs to fit her.

    • PinkyK

It appears to be a size (or possibly two) too small. Ladies! Quit obsessing over size and begin obsessing over fit!

    • tonibaloney

I am SO HAPPY about the makeup improvement that it almost makes up for the wonky dress situation. I think if she went up a size, she would have had a winner, since it wouldn’t be so tight through the hips.

    • formerlyAnon

You’re right about the dress, of course, but do I really care? Hard to because: her MAKEUP isn’t fucked. Or, maybe I should say her makeup is photographing well, for a change. And she just looks so happily engaged.

      • demidaemon

I know. Her headsuit game is amazing heer, and I am so glad for it. Hopefully, it’s not a fluke.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Huney…on you less is more, unless you are talking about more fabric. Everything she wears is too tight. Tight is not her friend!

    • mandalala

she looks like she’s floating in that top pic

    • Alloy Jane

This dress is riding up like crazy, that scrunching is NOT deliberate. But I’ve been there. I had a dress that was just a skosh too tight around my hips, but I wore it anyway because it fit my top so well and that’s always a greater issue for me. Lemme tell you, that puppy was damn near exposing my nether regions before I noticed it had ridden up. It was made of jersey, so the bunching wasn’t terribly obvious like it is on Mindy. It had actually artfully bunched so that it looked like there was ruching along my hips. But thankfully there was no one there to notice, as I worked at the back of the office and the one guy who also worked back there wasn’t in that day.

Mindy dear, you’re beautiful and rich. Hire a tailor.

    • AndieJay

This is a thigh dress. And I don’t think thigh dresses are ever intentional.

    • Mothra

I am totally loving how the first shot makes it look like she’s floating–her feet do not appear to be touching the sidewalk.

    • uprightcitizen

HATE the unfinished look of those sleeves. Oh, and the shape of them. And the fact that they seem to fold under easily.

      • livesarah

I don’t know if it’s just my screen, but I had to bring my iPad right up to my nose to see whether she had a bizarre roll of fat on her upper arm or if the sleeve was making it look that way. It was the sleeve, but it’s a really unfortunate look. Overall though, the colours in this dress are lovely on her, and the dress would be wonderful if it actually fit her bottom half and didn’t ride up.

    • Kimberlini

I really can’t tell if it’s a cute dress or not.

    • S-k-s

She just needs a tailor. Like the rest of us non-model sized human beings, the proportions of the dress don’t quite match her body. She needs to go a size up for the hips and then have it taken in up top where necessary.

I love the expression on her face. It’s like she knows the PUH is ridiculous but she’s loving every moment of it anyway.

      • TwiddlyStun

I agree. I see a lot of potential here if it wasn’t so tight on the bottom. I suspect it’s not designed to look that way just because of the way it flares out below the tightest spot on the hips. I think curvy hips can be very feminine and beautiful when the clothing is tailored right – this era is just not making that fit as a matter of course.

    • Bo

I Believe she gets so much bad comments in this site, and i just adore the way she dresses shes fun and everything and its her personality and she doesn’t look awful either, her body shape maybe complex to dress but i give her kudos for having the guts to wear what she likes, and even when some will disagree she has accomplished to create a consistent style.

      • demidaemon

I’m sorry, but she pays people to dress her. Therefore, she should always look flawless, no matter her size or shape.

    • Danielle

I have a feeling the dress was made to look like it’s riding up. Urgh.

    • ThaliaMenninger

      Ugh. No.

    • enchanted216

Hair and makeup are very pretty.

    • Bonnie Blue

I think her hair and make-up look great. The dress, not the best.

    • dschubba

I think this is (probably) the dark side of Spanx rearing its slippery head.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

That shade of green looks fantastic against her skin. Her hair and makeup look as pretty and polished as I’ve seen them. I feel like the dress is too long for her, and she correctly recognized it, but instead of changing she decided to ruck it up to a more flattering length. There’s a lot more torso to that garment than she’s got. The earrings are cool, at least.

    • Dan_In_NYC

PRAISE HELEN! She found a powder that works to combat her constant shiny-ness. For that I will award an Atta-girl!

    • Anna

Just clicked on those, and yes SO much better. What @disqus_zkPCxYvnya:disqus said about the instagram pics being taken just after she’s gotten ready makes total sense as these shots here show her after she’s arrived at her destination, and the skirt got all hiked up from sitting in the limo.

And btw, I LOVE your username.

    • Fuchsiaforever

She loves prints + skin tight
I don’t think it’s supposed to ride up like that. That would be horrible!

    • demidaemon

She’s finally made amends with or found a new MUA. That’s good. In other news, her dress is a walking visual illusion, which, depending on her intent, could be good or bad.

    • Lizzy

      I hate those shoes

    • InterplanetJanetski

Am I the only one that thinks that Mindy looks like she’s levitating in the second photo?

    • quiltrx

Definitely needed to be a size larger so it would stay in place. It’s a cute dress and the style itself works for her. I agree with what many said–her makeup usually looks harsh and shiny/greasy to me, but it looks really good here.
And her best accessory is that smile!

    • Miranda Reseigh

Those are pleats. If the dress were riding up, their position would change as she moves. They are the same in every picture. Clothing that rides up tends to wrinkle more than fold, in my personal experience, and those are folds.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

efinitely needed to go up a size or two. and this is not meant as a body snark, but do her knees naturally look dark and ashy like that? if it were me, i would want to cover that up, with makeup or a longer skirt. or something…

    • FridaStaire

Actually, I’d like to congratulate her on her poise for not yanking that dress down. Yep, it’s a mistake wearing a dress that does that. But once it’s on and you’re walking, it’s a big achievement to just pretend that’s how it was meant to be. Well done, Mindy!

    • Andrea Lentz

i think if the dress was pulled down it would look fantastic!

    • JynxTheCat

This nee comes pre-stumpified and I am not sure how or IF that could be corrected. so I just enjoy her enjoying.

    • MoDare

She’s nearly as wide as she is tall.
