Maggie Gyllenhaal in Peter Som at the Women In Film 2014 Crystal + Lucy Awards

Posted on June 12, 2014

Photographers managed to snap several pictures of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s dress before it took off and fled the room at high speed.

Scientists will now use these photos to study Maggie Gyllenhaal’s dress, which has long been considered a legend, like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, because photographic evidence has been so hard to come by.

Joking aside, she looks great. Once you see the blurred flowers, it gets a little migraine-y, but the look really suits her, it’s got a breezy-chic (yet still somehow urban) feel, and the dress gets more interesting the longer you look at it. Although you might want to take breaks and stare at a point in the distance for a few seconds.

  • altalinda

    And appropriate to the season!

  • Connie Ray Titty

This dress looks like a combination of senior prom and LSD…and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

    • Jane Donuts

I tripped acid at senior prom. While wearing a black dress with buttons down the front that I bought at Caché.

  • FibonacciSequins

Boy, she really has something against hiring hair and makeup people, doesn’t she?

I really like the top. The skirt looks good in motion on the model, a bit droopy on Maggie standing still.

    • conlakappa

And fitters. The hippie-chick braless look is still in?

  • lundibleu

I LOVE it. It has a slightly freaky 3D effect, but she looks brilliant and it’s something different and fun.

  • Gatto Nero

Summery, cool, a little boho, and very Maggie.

    • evave2

I hope you don’t think I’m stalking you, it;s just you seem to be saying exactly what I am thinking.

The out-of-focus white flowers are a great touch by the designer.

    • gefeylich

      Perfectly put. She looks fab.

  • Trent

She looks really good, although the fit is a wee bit wonky on her. But definitely continues her recent style progression from TLO’s classic “nursing home pee” comments.

  • Kristi Puckett Carrillo

Glad I took Imitrex before clicking that.

    • Constant Reader

I wish this trend of out-of-focus prints would die a quick death.

  • LadyVimes

I like it, but the ladies need some support, dear.

    • miscorrections

      Her boobs are depressed.

  • hughman

I’m pretty sure I see dolphins and a spaceship.

    • Hrfe

      Its the new Rorschach test.

  • Sarah

I dig it a lot from the front, but I wish the bodice continued to the back. The string business is unnecessary, IMO.

    • kimmeister

If one string gets snagged on her seat, she will stand up and suddenly find herself topless.

  • nannypoo

If this were in focus it would be gorgeous. I don’t love the back.

  • melanie0866

I like the dress, but she doesn’t look very happy. Cheer up, Maggie! You look super-cute!

  • MinAgain

I find the bodice vaguely unsettling. The more I look at it, the more it bothers me.

  • mickiemonkey

    Gave me a vertigo attack.

  • colleenjanel

I didn’t like the effect on Amy Poehler, and I don’t like it on Mags. Too headache inducing.

  • formerlyAnon

I like. And it shows off her shoulders beautifully without also treating me to more of her sternum than I care to see.

  • Aidan B

I think she looks pretty great. Although the print on that dress will definitely give me a headache if I look at it too long, the whole thing really works on her. Love the hair, too.

  • lexilexi

I can’t tell you how much I long to zhush up her hair and pull some of it down to give her bangs.

  • Jaimie

How to train men to stop staring at your boobs.

    • kimmeister

Ha! Or, a sure-fire way to tell who has been staring at your boobs.

      • Leah Elzinga

the ones sitting woozily in the corner?

        • kimmeister

Exactly. Or getting nauseated or fainting in front of you.

  • ChelseaNH

I like the halter part better than the skirt part.

  • marlie

I like this, but that bodice is making me dizzy. Maggie’s hair is a little funky, but her makeup looks good.

  • Mothra

That bodice is exactly what everything looks like when I am having a migraine headache. Which I actually wrote before I even read T-Lo’s write up. So clearly I am destined to write a book about these things! Go me!

  • Bert Keeter

Meh…. and now off to find the aspirin!

  • Irene Palma

    Is she wearing sneakers!?

    • kimmeister

I see a pointy-toed black pump peeking out in the first pic, and the 3rd to last.

  • msdamselfly

The style of this dress really suits her

  • enchanted216

I’m not sure what you are smoking! I think she looks ridiculous. The blurred flowers are ridiculous. Her boobs down to her belly are ridiculous. The shiny face, the hair, and the posture…ridiculous. I don’t get it. Sorry.

  • crash1212

I think this is an absolute personal best for her. I truly love this. I’m giving this an honorary WERQ – even though I don’t think I have the power – because she looks so much better than she usually does. Nicely done!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

    It’s working for Maggie, lovely.

  • quiltrx

I like it…you have to think a little to enjoy it, which is good. And it’s actually summery, so bonus points!

  • Skippymom1

I love everything about the dress and her, but it did seriously hurt my eyes. I wonder if it is easier to look at in person? Otherwise, so breezy and pretty, but gala/star appropriate.

  • demidaemon

I don’t get the blurred print. What’s the point?

But, I can’t deny, once I block that part out, that she looks pretty great.

  • mmhmm

    She looks beautiful!

  • Imma Mäder

I love this neckline on her, but her girls are in dire need of support! She looks chic though

  • PaolaT

She really should have worn this to the Museum of the Moving Image event instead…

  • Mark Anast

Does she cut her own hair??…with safety scissors??…in the dark??

    • MilaXX

I like the slightly messy hair with this dress. She could use a bit of leave in conditioner for more sleek looks, but paired with this wild print I think it works.

  • CatLady

I like the dress with those earrings. Her hair looks a bit like she just woke up, but we can’t have everything.

  • alliekat9090

Maggie sometimes can do odd things and they dont always work, but she looks real and she looks like no one else. She seems to know just who she is and her clothing choices reflect that. I like it.

  • Ruby_Red

Best I’ve seen on her in a long time, and she clearly feels good!

  • smh4748

This print is so unsettling! It would be fun to wear a dress like this though, just to see what kind of reactions you got. This might be good for busty women–it would teach men not to stare! :)

    • B. Garcia

      *lol* Great idea!!

  • MilaXX

Love it and it looks great on her.

  • Vera

    It suits her.

  • Imasewsure

Love this on her from head to toe. Great fun dress and really love her hair and makeup

  • Constant Reader

My boyfriend just walked through the room and said “Did she have a rough night and throw up all over herself?” Out of the mouths of babes…

  • decormaven

Wow, she is on a style roll. Well played.

  • NBG

Best she has looked in a while. This is her wheelhouse. She’s exactly the right amount of quirky for this. New stylist?

  • majorbedhead

The blurry print is giving me motion sickness, but other than that, I like the dress. I think. I couldn’t look at it for too long or I’d lose my breakfast.

    • Anna

Same here. I had to look away as I felt a seizure coming on.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    LOVE IT!

  • Danielle

    The print makes me dizzy.

  • bhl_1123

    you are a celebrity!!

  • Loren S

The blur effect reminds me of a Gerhard Richter painting.

    • Shawn EH

And since Maggie would definitely know who that is, she may have had the same thought!

  • Raspberry2012

It does make my eyes hurt a teens, but I can’t deny she looks great! Her face is a little shiny, but other than that, this is very cool!

  • heartbot

I love it. The top, ignoring the pattern, is pure late 90s. It looks like every prom dress I tried on in high school.

  • Fuchsiaforever

Cool dress and she knows it. Her hair looks like ass and she needs to wash her face and/or use blotting tissue for the oily complexion.

  • Uncle Spike

I seriously have no idea what Maggie has done, but she has improved her public appearances by LEAPS AND BOUNDS over the past year! Huzzah. This dress is no exception. I’m actually looking forward to seeing her next triumphs nowadays.

  • jml27

  • cat772

That print frightens me! I can’t look long enough to appreciate the dress, but I think it’s good.

  • E. D.

Cute on her, but as usual the girls need to be hoisted up. Stick-on bras are great!

  • Sunraya

I love the dress, but boy, does she look sweaty!

  • greymain

    I love this…best she’s looked in ages.

  • nycfan

    She looks great here.

  • Trishington

She is in a ZONE lately! Only one thing would make this a two-snap WERQ: a bra.

  • Perigee

Hrrmmm…I like this mostly, but the hair and make up need a bit of freshening up. I am of mixed feelings about whether she “needs” a bra. On the one hand, if her girls were a little higher, the shape of the bodice would be different, and probably smoother. OTOH, I disagree with those saying that she has boobs down to her stomach, and I tire of the expectation that your bits must be hoisted up and pulled center in every article of clothing. Her girls are right where I would expect them to be on a thin woman who has a couple kids, they aren’t distractingly low, and from the side I find the natural shape of them sexy but not tawdry. I like the idea of MG, a laid-back low-maintenance dresser most of the time, not always needing to follow the cultural mandate to make her boobs look more like those of a 15 year old cheerleader than of a 36 year old mom. It’s not like she’s wearing a formal strapless gown without support. What I’m saying, I guess, is that this dress would look better with a foundation garment, but if today was the day MG wanted to keep the girls out of jail, this was probably a better outfit than most to do so in.
