Lupita Nyong’o in Alexander McQueen at the 2014 Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Posted on June 02, 2014

Hmmm. We’re not sure how to intro this one. Is it:

It’s Monday morning! You need a shot of Lupita in your life!

Or is it:

It’s Monday morning and maybe we should’ve started off with something less upsetting because this is going to hurt you.

Because look: She’s stunning and it would be almost impossible to make her look bad but…ooof:

Lupita-Nyongo-Alexander-McQueen-2014-Veuve-Clicquot-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Lupita Nyong’o attends the 2014 Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey in an Alexander McQueen black and white bonded grid pleated dress paired with Christian Louboutin ‘Cataclou’ sandals, an Alexander McQueen ‘Heroine’ bag, a Janessa Leone hat, and Dannijo jewelry.

No. We’re sorry, but we can’t. The dress is working fine (although that neckline’s a little broad), but all the accessory choices are making us wince.  The shoes are … okay, we suppose. We don’t much like the design but we could possibly see them working with a different outfit. Not this outfit, though. The shoes are too heavy with too much of an edge to work with the dress. Your eyes go straight to the floor. And that super-matchy Barbie purse is just awful. Nothing says “little girl” like a purse that matches your dress exactly. And then there’s that hat. We think we might have cried a little at the sight of it. We’re starting to think she needs to hire an accessories advisor. We volunteer.

OK, the hat… But isn’t it nice to start Monday morning with even the idea of the “Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.” That just feels like something to which I should have been invited…

      • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

I mean champagne, right? Where was my invite too? We could’ve hung out and quietly dished everyone in sight.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

And here I was running errands when I could have been drinking champagne…..

      • EditKitten

Don’t worry, it’s in Jersey City*, so don’t feel that left out. (I can say that because I’m from New Jersey.)

*Jersey City is great but the idea of polo grounds in that part of Jersey just offends me for some reason.

        • NightOwl

It’s held at Liberty State Park which is across from the Manhattan skyline, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Actually a very scenic location.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

The Fug Girls have some other photos of Lupita at this event with Aaron Paul and Julianne Moore – said Julianne appears to be wearing a Gumby jumpsuit which is wrong on multiple levels. Jumpsuit viewing aside, it must have been an awesome event to attend. ;)

    • M_E_S

Yeah, so I definitely gasped at how awful those shoes are.

    • Alyssa

I love the dress. I think this would have been the time for a nice bold-colored shoe. I could see the purse working with a nice solid-colored dress, but absolutely not with the matching dress. As far as the hat…I have no words.

      • Introspective

agree with your love for the dress. i love it too. i was so seeing a pretty bright blue or yellow shoe. or even a classic red. this was screaming for a bright summery shoe to top off the look.

the hat is especially meh. the face however, is everything. and so she still gets undying adulation from introspective. and envy that she spent the weekend loafing in the hamptons with champagne flutes.

      • Alloy Jane

I love the dress too! Hate the accessories, except for the hat. It’s not necessarily “right” but it’s cute and a thousand times less wrong than the shoes and bag.

      • AnneElliot

Before I scrolled down, I saw the top of the hat in a thumbnail and thought the hat belonged to Pharrell.

    • Sarah

I like the dress. I don’t even hate the shoes. I really, really don’t like that hat. It’s like Smoky the Bear, Pilgrim-time, and Howdy I’m on a Dude Ranch all rolled into one.

      • zenobar

Lupita and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Hat.

    • Rhonda Shore

I’m having T-Lo commentary on Mad Men withdrawal.

    • Sobaika

The hat hurts. But I forgive my dear Lupita.

    • PastryGoddess

I can appreciate that she was smart enough to wear wedges on grass. but those shoes are bad, so so bad. The hat is whatever. But the matchy bag…that’s just going too too far.

She dresses like a young woman and accessorizes like a 70 year old matron.

    • Anna

On the one hand, I would really love for Lupita to be invited to the Royal Ascot JUST to see what accessories and hat she would wear.

But yeah, I can’t sign off on any of these, they each look like they belong with different outfits. Props to her for going with wedges for walking on grass, but they’re way too heavy for this dress.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s now time for a new adaptation of “Pygmalion” with Lupita as Eliza. We can dress her for Ascot, the ball-better yet, update the story so her character can have a succession of glorious RC outfits.
another possibility-Sabrina with Lupita in the Audrey role…..more delicious costume possibilities

        • Anna

          Love that idea so much!

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Can’t you just see Lupita at the head of a staircase in something absolutely gloriously stunning?

            • Anna

Now to find a design house worthy of her, they’re churning out an awful lot of dreck these days, even Chanel. In an ideal world, it would be something like Audrey Hepburn’s partnership with Givenchy.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

Carolina Herrera for the ball gowns, let’s put on our fashion thinking caps and fantasize.
Audrey’s partnership with Givenchy was made in heaven.

            • Anna

Definitely yes! I think Naeem Khan would suit her well, actually. And based on their fall collections, I’d also love to see her in Tadashi Shoji and Christian Siriano.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

We BKs need either/or both a Lupita Barbie or Lupita paper dolls to dress in couture inspired creations.

            • Anna

I know! If I had even the slightest ability to draw, I would so make Lupita paper dolls. I loved paper dolls growing up, I would always try to sneak the books into our grocery cart when my mom wasn’t looking.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

I loved paper dolls, too-they were a great pleasure of my chlldhood, and there were definitely ones that my little heart dearly, dearly wanted.

    • Danielle

I gasped at the shoes. So, so wrong.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

WHO DID THIS TO LUPITA? WHO? WHO?

We need to know, for the sake of humanity! :)

    • deelup

It’s almost as if she had a different team during awards season. Or maybe she has new contracts/commitments now and is required to wear things like this.

      • Judih1

I agree, because many of her looks post Oscar (except for the superb People magazine layout) have been awful. Especially that Met Gala drsess

    • lizajane1776

You NEED a wedge heel to be able to not sink in at a garden party. Maybe not THOSE wedges, but A wedge heel.
The hat might have been a nod to the country setting.
      No on the purse.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I would have gone with the Stuart Weitzman Corkswoon wedges that Kate Middleton favours. They are available in a number of different colours. No toe grippery issues, plus they are super classy looking, not punk like these awful things are. :)

    • bxbourgie

It’s the shoes… and I don’t mean that in a good way. FAIL on the shoes. I rather enjoy the hat though.

    • @Biting Panda

God I am tacky. I like the hat. At least it’s not an ironic fedora. I hate the shoes with a passion and I am angry at whatever idiot got paid to make sure she carried the matching purse.

      • 3boysful

With you all the way. Hat is appropriate to the venue. As are the shoes (hard to walk on grass in heels) but they aren’t good as part of this ensemble. Purse bugs me the most. But Miss L looks adorable.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I too like the hat-it is appropriate to the venue, frames her face. Perhaps we can take some comfort in the fact that these accessory missteps are evidence that Lupita is mortal.

        • makeityourself

The hat is appropriate to the venue, but not to the dress. And if she’s going to wear the hat at least wear it correctly. Pull it down onto the forehead. Get some attitude out of that brim. Hats do not perch on the head, ladies.

          • 3boysful

I suspect they had her push the hat back, otherwise the photos would not show her face.

          • scoobynacks

I honestly would rather she kept the hat and changed everything else.

      • lamamu

I too like the hat. It makes her look jaunty and fun.

      • Judih1

I think if the hat was a different color and worn WITHOUT the tilt to the side, I could stand behind it

        • @Biting Panda

Oscar Winners are allowed to tilt. Cher said so.

        • gabbilevy

I dunno… she spent the entire weekend Instagramming photos from this event, clearly having the GRANDEST time. I can’t hate.

      • Danielle

I like the hat too! I think it’s fun.

      • Constant Reader

I agree — the hat is venue-appropriate. The dress is also fine for the event. The shoes and purse have gotta go.

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I kinda love the hat, too. That first shot of her looking back over her shoulder is lovely. Of course, you can’t see her shoes in that shot.,

      • kimmeister

I adore the hat unreservedly. It’s the bag that bugs the most.

      • marlie

I don’t mind the hat, either. It’s maybe a little too big, but for the most part, it’s not a bad addition to the outfit/event.

      • lunchcoma

I don’t know if I like the hat, but I don’t dislike it. I’m even tolerant of the shoes, since you can’t really wear heels if you’re walking on grass. I just don’t think any of this should be worn together.

    • JANEABELLE

Go, go gadget purse! Shoes! Hat!

    • RussellH88

Maybe if she wore the a big Bette Davis-Now, Voyager type of hat?

      • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Right? This one is just so sadly generic.

        • Lower L

I think the crown of this hat is the problem. If I scroll the photo so that only the brim is visible, it looks better.

          • VictoriaDiNardo

oops – see reply to Kiltd! I agree!

        • VictoriaDiNardo

Exactly – it’s a cheap looking hat that undercuts the quality of the clothing. The straw is too stiff. Plus the crown is deep – made to be worn low and she’s wearing it high over the brow. It’s understandable because she wants her face to be seen ( that gorgeous face! ) but it throws off the proportions. The brim is a lovely shape; in a softer straw with a more shallow crown this would be charming on her.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Oh,now I am swooning at the thought of Lupita in that style hat.

    • smayer

      But I would buy a Lupita Barbie…

      • Qitkat

Years ago, as a grown woman, I desperately wanted a bridal doll. Now I wonder what I was thinking! and no granddaughter to pass it on to yet. However, I agree with you, a Lupita Barbie would be so beyond awesome.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

You have NO idea how close I can to ordering the Princess Grace bridal doll from the Franklin Mint year ago….soooo close.
I do, however, have one of the Franklin Mint Diana dolls in residence in our living room, and I also inherited my mom’s Princess Di bridal doll. We once used it as a centerpiece for a bridal shower. When my mom bought the doll, I gave her a huge laugh by telling her “Mom, I love you, and I want you to live a long, long time, but when you go I.WANT.THAT.DOLL.”

    • AmeliaEve

I don’t even really like the dress. It would be a lot more flattering without the attached saddle bags.

      • Wink

She’s such a slender woman, but the “tiers” of the dress add bulk to her lower half. Only a woman with no-hips-at-all would need to add volume there.

    • Yolanda

We volunteer! We volunteer as accessories tributes! The hat, that purse and those shoes made me wince. Why Lupita, why?!

    • BawlmerGurl

First no Mad Men to ponder, and now this?

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

That hat looks like it was bought at Cost Plus, the shoes are from some sale bin somewhere, and that overly matchy purse makes me want to scream. Otherwise, I’m fine with this.

      • ballerinawithagun

Ha ha, otherwise, I’m fine with this….You are so funny. Yes, that hat is an I’m on vacation and I need a throw away hat, toss it in the trash Now! I like the other pieces individually but not together. Wouldn’t Lupita look great wearing that wild choker???
I do own the perfect black and white (if she wants to stay matchy-matchy) feathery, large hat that doesn’t get out of the hatbox often enough. I’d gladly loan it to her!

      • Qitkat

I’m going on vacation. Adds Cost Plus to shopping list for hat ;)

      • bitchybitchybitchy

You’ve come to the right place-You can share the pain with fellow BK’s.

    • Drunken Housewife

I’m clearly in the minority, but I liked the hat. I strongly wanted her to have the belt the model had, with the contrast, rather than the same fabric belt, and I disapproved of the bag (didn’t hate the shoes so much because the bag distracted from them with its horrrors).

Excited that she has gotten the film rights to “Americanah”, which I just read! Great book, not obviously fodder for a film, so it will be interesting to see what becomes of it.

      • Drunken Housewife

p.s. Seriously great make-up on her. It’s been a problem for black women finding decent makeup that works with their skin tones, so it’s extra happy-making to see Lupita in gorgeous makeup.

        • Sobaika

I’m hoping Lancome ups their skintone range now that she is their brand ambassador.

      • marlie

I read about her and the book and quickly added it to my Amazon Wish List. It sounds so interesting!

    • moppet

      DAT FACE THO.

But yeah. The hat is not good.

    • Christine Hart

      I like the hat!

    • Frank_821

Yes the styling is off. It’s a synergy of wrong. Individually each accessory is not that bad. Collectively the look turns into something very subpar. It’s the down side of our expectations of this woman

    • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

I think a polo classic requires a hat but not that hat with that dress. Super cute dress ruined by accessories that are all fine and fun in their own but together they just drag the look down. Our Lupita deserves better! Heed T-Lo’s advice, Ms Lupita, hire them! Kittens, can you imagine the splendor of that combo!

    • andi56

Some people should simply not wear hats. Lupita is one of them. And as Mark Twain would say about the matchy bag and dress: “Let us now draw a curtain of charity upon the scene.”
Drunken Housewife: That’s interesting! I also read the book, and thought about how they might make a very interior book into a film.

    • Jessica Freeman

I think she needed a wider brim, floppy hat. Wished she would have stuck with model’s belt and a simpler shoe.

    • Qitkat

I have chosen to think of the Veuve Clicquot wall as her accessories– look at those beautiful shades of cadmium, carrot, tangerine, persimmon, goldenrod, well maybe not all of them, but don’t you just love color names?? :-)

The dress is darling. I will let her keep the shoes, although in persimmon they would have been perfection; I will even (gasp!) let her keep the purse, it is so cute, and looks grownup even as it matches the dress, she and the stylist probably just couldn’t resist the allure. The hat must go, traded out for a little black number with a smaller curling brim and a colorful trim, or color with black trim. She could also consider a belt and earrings with a pop of color. And an orange hued lipstick. But not everything at once ;-)

    • sienna elm

I wonder if the shoes were decided on before they realized they got the dress without the matching fabric belt. They might have worked with that edgy, metal belt.

    • HeisenbergHattie

This is a POLO match event. There are two mandatory items: #1 Shoes you can walk on grass without sinking #2 A broad brim hat so you are not squinting. The purse? I cannot explain the purse.

    • jwatt85

Wow this just feels unnecessarily…harsh. Just my opinion because she was at an event with a lot of bougie ass people and matches that tone really well.

    • gitchygitchymama

That pattern is seizure inducing and the ghetto fedora ain’t helping.

    • DagnyReardon

Those shoes take divot stomping to a whole new level.

    • Judy_S

She’s my Barbie. Sorry, she cheered me up anyway this Monday morning.

    • fringebenefit

I do think we’ve been spoiled by Lupita. On anyone else, this would have been just fine. I agree that the look is flawed, but I wouldn’t even vote it OUT.

    • Janet B

Keep the purse and ditch the rest.
The dress doesn’t absolutely nothing for her figure, the shoes and hat are silly.

eta: She wears colors so well, why go with black & white?

    • Judih1

Wish she had worn the choker and belt on the model. Then with different shoes, hat and purse, this could have worked. This is sad and borderline twee

    • xay

I guess I should question my taste level – I’d swap out the belt and the purse, but I loved everything else.

    • PlethoraofBooks

TLO- “We volunteer! We volunteer as tribute!”

      • demidaemon

I really wouldn’t mind seeing a style hunger games.

    • boweryboy

I think she looks lovely. Hate the matchy purse and the shoes but at least they’re shoes with some pizzazz.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I kind of don’t hate the purse, but everything else is horrid, especially WITH everything else. Go home, honey. Stand in front of the mirror and start over.

    • LeelaST

Don’t like anything about this (the styling on the model is no better), the print is overwhelming her.

    • butterflysunita

I disagree, uncles. I think she looks adorable–I love that dress on her. And I will never fault a woman for wearing a wide-brimmed hat when it’s sunny–it’s the best way to protect your skin.
The accessories would bother me at a different event, but not this one. Not that I’ve ever been to a Veuve Clicqot Polo Classic, but somehow she looks event-appropriate.

    • Vee

I like the shoes and belt on the model.

    • Daisy Walker

I like the shoes–they bring a needed edge to the outfit and at least she’s not wearing the pastel ’80s pumps she was stuck on this spring. Wish the bag was a color. Hate the hat.

    • Kent Roby

That dress is just too Baptist for me; I can not, even for Darling Lupita. And the hiddy shoes and purse….just NO.

    • Sophie

No to the bag and hat, I don’t even mind the shoes because my eyes keep returning to the other accessories.

    • PeaceBang

You know, I agree with everything you say, dear uncles, but part of me can’t help but think that the silly hat and matchy Barbie purse are a hilarious commentary on the event. There’s something slightly subversive and mocking about it. It couldn’t be that this incredibly smart, sophisticated, African woman is making a sly sartorial dig at the ridiculousness of a POLO CLASSIC, could it? I like to think that it’s possible. But the shoes. They pain me.

      • Kent Roby

I respect your attempt to give greater meaning to a horrid look, but the stylists who put her in consistently-bad shoes just can’t be that clever.

        • PeaceBang

The stylists might not be, but Lupita herself may be. C’MON! Work with me here!

    • Tanya Wade

She has perfectly lovely feet. Why must the shoes always be an abomination?!

    • KinoEye

Y’know, there are better hats in the world — hats more worthy of that beautiful head — but my god, her FACE in the thumbnail, combined with the effect of the hat, is glorious. The bear trap shoes make me really sad.

    • Jecca2244

my issue with this look is that is screams that it was all a nod to the publicists at Alexander McQueen….

    • bitchybitchybitchy

OK-yes, this could have used a pop of color in the accessory department, but I love that hat. Lupita still looks adorable

    • SewingSiren

Like the dress for the event and the shoes too since it appears to be outdoors with some waking on grass. Are sun hats de rigueur at polo matches? I really have no idea, but that could explain the hat. It would have been better to wear a regular picture hat though. The bag I cannot explain away and I refuse to even try.

    • lilibetp

I’d like this much better if she were wearing a pink picture hat. That hat is just wrong – it will never look right on her no matter the outfit. Everything else can work with another outfit.

    • Lori

I think all the parts of this are fine-to-good, just not together.

    • Starling

Serving up early 90s Julia Roberts realness (I’m not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing overall). The shoes need to die a fiery death.

    • cmb123

Hate the shoes, hate the purse, needs jewelry – maybe a bracelet or something. The hat screams day at the beach, not polo. I weep for the missed WERQ opportunities that her accessories just kill.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

For divot-stomping practicality, you need wedges, just not those ones.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Aw, I know it’s not perfect, but she’s so cute anyway. :)

    • ScarlettHarlot

The hat is incongruous, and the purse is just a tile too far.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love the hat, just not the shoes or bag. Although I do understand the need to wear wedges, because I HATE wearing heels on grass and feeling my heels sink into the earth; just not these, because they look rather cheap.

    • Kristen

At first glance, I liked it. On second glance, I want the hat to be a bit bigger and the shoes to be a bit snazzier and less heavy, but I still don’t hate the outfit (I do hate the shoes). She’s such a knock out, she makes the look more fabulous than it deserves to be.

    • MM4321

T&L – I hear you. But . . . it’s a polo match. I’d argue that the fashion standards are different than for a red carpet. As such, she is occasion appropriate and adorable as always.

    • Lilithcat

I like the idea of the hat, but the crown and brim are too big for her.

Love the dress, hate the shoes.

      • GillianHolroyd

The crown *is* too big (and dowdy) but the brim could go much wider.

I’d keep the shoes due to the wedge heels (even though she is on astroturf at the moment).

        • Dan_In_NYC

Agree, I want full on Diana Ross Mahogany floppy hat drama – or no hat at all. And I know those are Louboutins – but those shoes look like cheap PVC. And I just can’t with the blue eye shadow matching the blue nails. And the matchy bag AND belt? Just… no. No.

On the sunnier side, I can muster faint praise for the earrings. They’re kinda cute.

TLO – points for being a very discussable look… but you’re right, I was really wanting Lupita in McQueen to turn out much fiercer than this. ;)

    • stubbornthoughts

I wish she were wearing that hat while sporting a fabulous long coat with a fur-lined collar, leather pants, and giant sunglasses. Le sigh.

      • Imasewsure

You are right… A Solange moment perhaps… or better yet, a Pam Grier… could have saved that hat…

Instead I am hoping the wind blew it on to the track and a horse ran over it at this event instead…

    • Cheryl

I think it’s perfect for the event she is attending. Unless you want to aerate the lawn, heels are a really bad idea on grass. And a big hat to protect that beautiful skin, is imperative.

    • MK03

Still better than the disaster she wore to the Met Ball.

    • suzq

You realize, you’re nitpicking, right? You also realize that a woman who grew up in Nigeria was invited to a polo match by a champagne company. Someone probably had to explain this whole event to her and she probably just stopped laughing about it fifteen minutes ago. The look on her face is all “I can’t believe I’m even AT this event.” For that and that alone, wear the black hat, honey. You go ahead.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

You realize she went to Yale, right? Why on earth would you assume she needed a polo match “explained” to her?

And you realize that a large portion of this site is devoted to nitpicking celebrity fashion, right?

      • Imasewsure

Plus come on… every girl on the planet with a celebrity bent and a television set has seen My Fair Lady exactly 1000 times. She can’t accessorize to save her life (and neither can her team).

        • marlie

It was on TV this weekend, in fact, and I watched for the 1001st time.

      • marlie

She went to college and grad school in the states, and spent time working in Hollywood between the two. Plus, her family is relatively prominent in Kenya, so it’s likely that she was exposed to a lot more than we may assume.

      • Jamie M.

Yale or no Yale, don’t assume that someone’s background dictates what they do and do not know. I’m sure you know about things outside of your cultural origin.

      • LeeS99

Lupita has lived in several countries (Mexico, US, UK) not just Nigeria. She comes from an upper class prominent family in Nigeria. Lupita is not a rube but rather a sophisticated traveler who I’m sure knows what is a polo event. Please stop making false assumptions about Africans.

        • LeeS99

Oops, I meant to say Kenya not Nigeria. I have Nigeria on the mind right now.

      • Trickytrisha

Wow, condescending much? That’s just insulting.

    • NMMagpie

The dress needs a solid color belt. Rethink the shoes and forget the hat.

She’s still stunning even under all the questionable accessories.

      • decormaven

Yes, all that busy fabric- and so much of it! The matching purse should be hit off into the stratosphere with a polo mallet.

    • SistaT

I think she looks exquisite and absolutely appropriate for the event. Those shoes are perfect given that she’ll be walking around on grass outside. She wouldn’t be able to manage that in stilettos without looking like an idiot.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I love the purse, but it is a little too matchy, even for me, the Queen of Things That Match.

    • DuBey2

Am I the only one horrified by the Photo backdrop & Astroturf? They really cheaped out on that. As to the comments about what she should wear to a Polo event – has any of us ever BEEN to a polo event? I suspect that they do not dress as we *think* they dress. Certainly not like a 1940′s Hollywood film setting. I have also not been to polo but have been to hundreds of Horse Shows, 3 day events, and horse races.
The only people who looked out of place were the ones trying too hard: with huge “Derby” hats and fluffy dresses.
I can’t help but think Alexander McQueen may have rolled over in his grave at this tea party looking dress when shown with the fabric belt. Made me wince.
I personally loved the model styling on this, but most of all, I want Lupita to HIRE T & LO for her accessories styling!!! Then the 5 people who don’t yet want to “be her” will finally join up.

    • StelledelMare

She was just revealed as part of the new Star Wars cast and so I can’t fault her for anything right now.

      • KinoEye

!!!!! If this is a real, true thing, that’s the most compelling reason I’ve heard to see the new ones. Awesome!

        • marlie

Lupita AND Gwendolyn Christie (Brienne) from Game of Thrones!

      • sugarkane105

I came back here to see if the Bitter Kittens had heard! So excited for her!

      • demidaemon

I posted the same thing in my comment. YAY! I kind of hope she is the new romantic interest, but I know that’s probably a bit too much wishful thinking.

    • Imasewsure

We need to crowdfund that accessory advisor role for our dear uncles STAT… this one is painful although I do love that purse

    • BlairBear

I dont hate it. but to be fair I clicked on the Lena Dunham post before this.

      • marlie

        It’s all relative, right?

        • BlairBear

I dont mind the dress shoes or hat, I get the purse complaint but I also don’t hate it. Especially because this isn’t a major event. Its just a polo match and she looks cute and pretty to my eyes.

    • Shawn EH

It’s casual, but I like it.

    • littlevase

The dress is cute but would look better with another belt. She is just…..way too matchy matchy in all of her styling choices. She is always serving up bridesmaid realness. Her shoes are always ALWAYS hiddy. She looks so much better when she wears barely any accessories. A simple modern sheath in a bright color, and that face. What the hell else is needed? She needs an accessory intervention. Step away from the accessories. Dang. Please stop trying to look 80.

    • GeoDiva

Her makeup is gorgeous and the dress is cute. While wearing wedges for this event is snart, the ones on her feet are ugly. The brim on the hat needs to be bigger/more dramatic and that handbag needed to stay in the car.

    • ktr33

I adore the dress from the hips up, but don’t like the flappy pockets/overskirt thing, but I guess they add “interest.” The hat doesn’t send me off a bridge, either. Agree re matchy-matchy purse and bad-match shoes, but this is not paining me the way I expected, based on the headline. Was expecting a major scroll-down needle scratch, but just got a minor meh-shrug.

    • marlie

The hat doesn’t bother me so much, but I hate the purse, and I’m not in love with the shoes either. But the dress and makeup are nice.

    • cwade1211

I think the dress would have looked cute with flats. How tall is Lupita? Are flats totally not appropriate for some reason?

    • Sonia Castleberry

To me the shoes work because she’s at a polo competition and you can’t wear anything too spikey or you spend your day pulling your heels out of the turf and possibly ruining in them in the process. Probably a bit too high for comfort; I agree with a previous suggestion of the Corkswoon. I like the hat but it looks too small. Think of how it would look if it sat closer to her brow line, which is where it should be for this type of hat. Love the dress; perfect example of the carefree dresses of summer that the WSJ featured last weekend. The purse is regrettable.

    • CeeRich

She definitely needed a wedge or a flat due to the event (although I agree…those were the wrong ones). It’s on grass and you also get to walk out and “stomp on the divets”. A heel would not be advisable.

    • LadyVimes

The hat is all wrong. It should have been a wide brim sunhat with a small, hemisphere crown. None of this structured crown mess going on. Hate the shoes, hate the purse, she can keep the dress, but it’s not doing her any favors.
Oh, girl. Who did this to you? Point them out for us and we’ll have a Talk.

    • CeeQ

Yes it does come across at first to be fabulous but on close inspection and as my eyes adjust, it’s a bit of a GAH.
That purse is what’s fucking it up. Ditch the purse, better shoes (something strappy and and much less chunky wedge, maybe?) and it is worlds better.
I’m ok with the hat – it IS a bit plain but the dress is all kinds of loud so maybe that’s ok?

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Don’t love the shoes, and the look could use some color. I don’t hate the bag, but wish the color would have been the purse. Otherwise, I do like the dress, and she’s gorgeous. Just seeing her, even if her look isn’t perfect, makes me smile.

    • FibonacciSequins

What’s wrong with the hat? It seems fairly inoffensive to me. Agree on the rest of it and I wish she’d ripped off that peplum. It serves no purpose but to irritate.

    • P M

      Um…. so white accessories?

ETA: oops, meant white in colour.

    • sk8tfan

Who is this pretender and where is my dear Lupita? I must quaff the champagne to wash away the bad aftertaste left by that hat.

    • Truthiness2U

I like the hat, and I’m okay with the purse. It’s the shoes that bother me. Which yes, my first thought was about stomping the divets, so I agreed in theory, I just didn’t like these shoes with this dress, at all.

So I thought this was a cute look, hat included, until the shoes. So pretty much par for the course with Lupita.

    • fungstyle

Am I blinded by her powers? I think the hat looks cute. The shoes and purse are tragic though.

    • Dagney

I love all of it. okay the shoes are slightly off, but not a complete disaster.

    • CT14

The dress isn’t working, either. It makes her look wide.

      I has a sad.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I love matchiness, but even I think that bag is a bridge too far. The shoes don’t bother me because they’re balanced out by the hat which I kinda love on her. What I really don’t like are those saddle bags on the dress, take those off and it’s a great little dress. She looks good as always.

    • NinjaCate

That dress is divine. All the accessories need to die in a fire.

    • OhSheila

The hat was awesome in instagram pictures.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

I second TLo’s e-motion to become offical Yay or Nay-ers to Lupita.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I have had the SHITTIEST day, and I come home to see Miss Lupita, AND I find out she has been cast in the new Star Wars movie. I am one Ambien Martini away from this being the best day ever.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

She put on her mom’s cute-ish dress, grabbed her rebellious older sister’s shoes, took Grandma’s Sunday purse, and snagged Grandpa’s farmin’ hat.

    • http://www.redriverhistorian.com texashistorian

Yeah, the hat is something awful. This whole ensemble would have been spring-y in pink or yellow, or even (and I don’t say this lightly) pastels. The background looks like an untalented stocker at Kroger’s cobbled it together for a quick Mother’s Day sale.

    • Milos Mom

Why do I think that someone is now dressing themselves rather than letting a professional do it? It is OK Lupita… I still love you.

    • demidaemon

The accessories are completely wrong. If she restyled this outfit and burned the hat, it might have been a winner.

In better news, Lupita has been cast in the new Star Wars movie. YAY!

    • lucasuk82

While I like the dress, if she wanted these accessories, a sleek white suit would work… sort of Saturday Night Bianca Jagger. Even then, the purse is kind of matronly. I’d save them for another event and wear the dress with a chunky beaded necklace, colorful peep toe flats, and a round brimmed hat.

    • e jerry powell

Compared to some of the other stuff at the same event, :Lupita is the queen.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I think she looks gorgeous as always. It’s the backdrop that’s a big problem for me. Like it’s the back wall at Pier One.

    • Trickytrisha

Not my favorite Lupita. Less sternum, different shoes, smaller hat, etc, etc.

    • MilaXX

I actually like the hat with the dress. I think the shoes are too heavy. A white wedge or even naked sandal would have worked better. Also lose the matchy bag.
