Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera at the “TrevorLIVE NY” Event

Posted on June 19, 2014

It’s summer and the celebrity style pickin’s at the moment are decidedly slim. So no, this isn’t all that discussable.

Lucy-Liu-Carolina-Herrera-TrevorLIVE-NY-Event-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Lucy Liu attends the Trevor Project’s 2014 “TrevorLIVE NY” Event at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City in a Carolina Herrera bow neckline dress paired with a Jimmy Choo ‘Cosma’ baguette and Gianvito Rossi pumps.

It’s not hard to wear or fashion forward or styled to delightfully innovative perfection. It’s just Miss Lucy looking as polished as she usually does, in a standard LBD* and perfectly appropriate accessories. Maybe not exciting or particularly worthy of singling out, but we’d guess this outfit is more aspirational (in the “real world” sense) than half the celebrity getups we feature here. We’re gonna go out on a limb and suggest that most of y’all aren’t walking around your day-to-day lives in sheer dresses with your panties on display or some such. But we bet a solid majority of the lady kittens reading this have a Little Black Dress they can always rely on.

* With a perhaps somewhat annoying-to-T Lo giant bow/bust. We’re just saying, is all.

Yes, I do, but I need that clutch to go with it….

    • KingCrazy

I hate the length. The hemline should be raised a bit.

      This is standard, otherwise.

ETA: WHAT IS THE POINT ON THE PLASTIC STRAP ON THE SHOES? OR AM I SEEING THINGS?

      • marlie

I am perfectly fine with the length of the dress, but those shoes need to be set on fire, just for the plastic strap thing.

        • KingCrazy

It could be the angle of the pictures, but it isn’t doing anything for her IMO.

I can’t EVEN with the plastic straps.

          • Sarah

Oh, it pains me. I didn’t SEE it, and now I DO. W.T.F.

      • kimmeister

The point is to keep them from falling off her feet, and to drive us batty.

        • DebbieLovesShoes

          Done and done

      • girliecue

Ack! Now I can’t unsee the plastic! I could have happily gone my entire life not knowing shoes with giant plastic straps existed. Get the away, Satan-shoes! Seriously, get away from me!

      • AlisonS

For a moment I thought she had on those try on booties from a shoe store. But I see it in the first picture…. eye searing.

      • sk8tfan

Apparently her feet are wearing progressive lenses.

    • RussellH88

      It’s perfectly serviceable.

Is it just a plain skirt or are there details that get kind of lost in the black? I can’t tell if those are just wrinkles or there’s something going on there.

      • marlie

I think the dress just needs to be steamed, or even just smoothed out on her.

      • MilaXX

Looks like she forgot to smooth it out when she stood up.

    • kimmeister

The pumps with the big transparent plastic straps are not aspirational.

    • marlie

It’s pretty. Nothing revolutionary, but still pretty and yes, very “real world.” Her hair and makeup are pretty, but I think I hate the clear plastic part of the shoes.

      • TinyDynamo

        Twinsies!

      • Snarkmeister

It reads prom to me. It’s that big bust bow. I mean, imagine this in powder pink or blue – TLo would be having a conniption. The damn thing looks like it’s made out of TAFFETA, for f*ck’s sake. This is a major OUT for me.

        • marlie

The bow seems so subtle (to me) that it doesn’t bug. But I might feel differently about it if it were in powder pink or baby blue. Then it would be way too twee.

    • TinyDynamo

She looks relaxed, happy, & completely appropriate. Nothing revolutionary, but she’s so lovely she’s selling it.

      • marlie

        Jinx. ;)

      • evave2

I love Lucy Liu; she wears Carolina Herrera so beautifully. I love the clutch. I wish there was a close-up of the plastic-y shoes so I could go OH NO much louder.

        • TinyDynamo

But yet I kiiiiiind of want to get a chance to try that shoe on? *hangs head in shame*

    • ConnieBV

Is that a giant plastic STRAP on her shoe? No.

    • hughman

      I Love Lucy Liu.

      • Shawn EH

She has great instincts; personal style means a lot.

    • SayWhaaatNow

      It’s nice.

    • bravobravp

      Is that a tit bow?

      • @Biting Panda

        Sadly, yes. Yes, it is.

        • Bad Idea Jeans

Takes me back to prom fashions from my early 90s high school days. Luckily, it is not super prominent since it is not in a contrasting color.

          • Joey Taxes

Make the bow white and it’s Kelly & Brenda’s spring fling dress.

    • @Biting Panda

It’s worthy of discussion because it’s depressing. It’s very nearly a Jessica McClintock formal dress. On Lucy Liu. The horror!!

      • conniemd

And by Carolina Herrera to boot. Hard to believe as the pairing is usually magnificent. I wish the LBD was in a killer color like Maroon or purple or teal.

        • demidaemon

I had the exact same thoughts. I actually don’t particularly like the shape. The skirt has too much flare. I wish it was cut closer to the body.

    • Jessica Freeman

Always appreciate something standard over the sheer-skirt-with-lace-and-granny-panties-with-a-cut-out.

      • marlie

Right. This is a simple, classic look. It’s never going to go out of style.

    • ashtangajunkie

She’s so pretty. That’s all I can ever think when I see her. She’s just so pretty.

    • Anna

I don’t understand the shoes. The clear “straps” look like some part of the packaging that weren’t removed before she put them on. Not crazy about the dress either, but it’s fine if a little bandeau bikini top with skirt attached.

      HER HAIR AND FACE THOUGH.

      • Grumpy Girl

I don’t think the shoes have a back. So without the strap, they would not stay on?

        • Anna

I know, I just hate the clear/plastic trend in footwear.

    • Lex

Boobie bows ruin everything… too juvy for someone her age

      • MoHub

It’s also giving her faux titscrepancy.

        • demidaemon

          That’s definitely a feat.

    • MilaXX

Not earth shattering, but boob bow aside, pretty.

    • MannahattaMamma

Yes altho weirdly the photos give the impression that she’s wearing her hair as straps for the dress.

    • Grumpy Girl

I actually don’t think she looks as pretty as usual here; like they’ve done something off with the eyes.

    • LadyVimes

Weird shoes though. No offense, Miss Lucy.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

“But we bet a solid majority of the lady kittens reading this have a Little Black Dress they can always rely on.”

Share circle time? Mine’s an Isaac Mizrahi for Macy*s I got at a thrift store for ten bucks with tags. Damn dress is “magic” spelled with an “i” dotted with a star.

      • FibonacciSequins

My LBD is actually teal blue, from Banana Republic several years ago. I have lots of black separates but the only black dress I have is a crepe/satin 30s evening down I picked up at a thrift shop eons ago. Have never had an occasion formal enough to wear it.

      • Kitten Mittons

I have one for funerals, one for a dinner or cocktail hour (work appropriate), and my sexay one. I don’t even remember where I got the first two, because I’ve had them at least 5-10 years. Good investments.

        Way to thrift shop!

        • conniemd

Got my LBD on E-Bay. I wear it for funerals with a black and white or red jacket and for dinner I wear a beautiful maroon embroidered scarf I bought on the West Bank. Styling is everything.

          • Kitten Mittons

That scarf sounds beautiful. My dad bought me a scarf for Christmas and it’s the only one I wear now. I’ve been thinking about slipping my mom a hint for this Christmas :)

Hey, the man has good taste.

I agree about styling. These dresses are all so different but very serviceable that I’ve never been able to part with them. I ended up with three because I keep replacing one but needing the old one for this event or that dinner. Clothes hog.

      • Jessica Freeman

My LBD are both black and white. One is from white house black market, the other is a ralph lauren. Neither were from a thrift store, but deeply discounted.

      • Anna

I just had to part with a beloved one so I’m on the market for a replacement. I’m not the most practical shopper, though, and tend to get sidetracked by prints, shiny things and embellishment, so the process could take awhile.

        • Alyssa

I too am on the market for one, and have been for a few years now. However, every time I go looking for one, I purchase something with a print instead. So best of luck to you. :)

          • Anna

I hear you! I have the reverse problem of having too much black in the wardrobe. I actually think I’m neutral-averse ;-).

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Are her legs reflecting the carpet or does she have a bad fake tan that is totally unworthy of her?

I have an LBD that I can always rely on, but alas it hasn’t fit me in 10 years and 20kgs. But it is still in my cupboard awaiting the day.

    • colleenjanel

I typically hate boobie bows, but this is one of the least offensive deployments I’ve ever seen.

    • Joey Taxes

Make that bow white and you have Kelly & Brenda’s Spring Fling dress!

      • ktr33

THANK YOU! I think that’s EXACTLY what was in my mind, but EXACTLY! I just couldn’t place it.

    • blue808

What is going on with her feet? Weird tan line? Giant clear plastic strap? Tan line I can handle…clear plastic strap is a big hell no!

    • ShaoLinKitten

      It’s not even a real bow. It’s a faux bow…

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Looks too heavy a black for Summer!

    • ktr33

Huge meh. Kind of prom dress, maybe? And, like, NO make-up? Which I have no problem with, except with this sort of black-tie-type dress, it doesn’t make sense. And grandma’s gold earrings, and clashing silvery rhinestone clutch. I wouldn’t even call it polished, and it’s not an LBD I’d ever wear, and I am no kinds of edgy. It’s 1/2-baked.

    • frannyprof

This reminds me of the dress Julia Roberts’s character bought in “Mystic Pizza” for a date with her rich new boyfriend. Except her LBD had a white/cream bust bow.

      • ktr33

YES! that and what “Guest” said below about Brenda and Kelly’s prom!

    • Imasewsure

Just a pair of kick ass shoes instead of these dull pumps and I could totally get behind this “normal” evening frock

    • smayper

I just love the Trevor Project, so she’s a win for being there.

    • MissusBee

I love most things she wears on Elementary. That minimalist laid-back yoga chic thing, with occasional coat and hat porn. It’s one of my favorite TV character wardrobes (set in the present day).

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Her wardrobe in that baffles me. How on earth does she afford those designers on apprentice-detective salary?!

        • MissusBee

Absolutely. I guess as she’s not paying rent, that would amount to quite a clothing allowance. Although in the world of eccentric flawed-genius millionaire-offspring recovering addict detectives, Joan’s wardrobe seems like it could happen.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Her fruit budget must also be vast.

            • MissusBee

That I cannot explain. If I were an impeccably-dressed fruit-abundant apprentice detective, I could probably tell you.

      • BlairBear

Her coat game is top notch. But some of her super blousy tshirts and school girl skirts kinda bug me. Also stank boots. But elementary is my favorite show !

    • Sarah

ONE lbd? Try six. Maybe eight, if you count the maxis. Oh, and then there’re the two cocktails…

      • kimmeister

I know, right? Then again, I have excessive amounts of everything wardrobe-related so that’s no surprise.

        • Sarah

Yessss. Excessive indeed. What is silly is trying to find a particular black garment in my plethora of black garments. I’ll be throwing stuff around, and the mister will say “what are you looking for?” and I’ll be all “MY BLACK TANK TOP” and then he just rolls his eyes.

          • kimmeister

I don’t even want to think about how many garments are in my closet that aren’t even on hangers, they’re just held into place by the pressure of all the other garments around them.

    • Dan_In_NYC

I was at this event – the clothes looked pretty boring, but she has PRESENCE for days, so she owned the stage for the 90 seconds she was on it.

    • Danielle

I have quibbles with the hem length, but otherwise I’m in love. As usual.

    • Nancer

Sometimes you don’t have to break new ground. You just have to look good. :)

    • Raspberry2012

Nope. It’s fine, and it’ll do. Moving on!

    • mmebam

Okay, can someone explain to me what’s going on around her eyes? Is the concealer too light? Is it not blended enough? Did they use too much highlighter? She just looks like she has raccoon eyes all of a sudden.

    • suzanne77

The dress is cute, but her hair is perfection! Both bouncy and shiny! I die of jealousy!

    • e jerry powell

Her posture looks a little too good in that first shot.

    • numenah

      Now that’s some healthy hair!

    • suzq

That skirt is just a little too long to me.

    • snarkykitten

      dem shoes tho

    • SugarSnap108

Little Bad Dress. Sorry, this looks cheap and prom-y. Lucy Liu is far too good for that dress.

    • Trickytrisha

She’s almost always delightful. In spite of the slightly askew skirt, I like the dress and am surprisingly not bothered by the bow. Bows are a pet peeve.

    • dschubba

This is the summer version of her trademark princess ballgown.

    • Alloy Jane

I dislike those shoes. And while I love bows for how ridiculous they are, it doesn’t work for me when they’re trying to be “serious.” This bow/bodice thing is trying very hard to look mature and it’s just not working.

    • Lilithcat

But we bet a solid majority of the lady kittens reading this have a Little Black Dress they can always rely on.

I hate to tell you how many LBDs I own!

    • josie4444

It’s cute – but it reminds me of Mickey Mouse ears

    • Tracy_Flick

My LBD doesn’t look like my prom dress from 1991, that’s for sure. And the plastic strap on those shoes is devastatingly cheap-looking. Other than that, she’s gorgeous and polished, as ever.

    • http://birdybegins.blogspot.co.uk/ Eleanorjane

So DULL! Plain black shoes with a black dress, a little sparkle in the accesories, Lord save me! I would wear the (lovely) dress with bright red wedge heels, an animal print clutch and some chunky wooden bracelets – or something more interesting, anyway.

    • JynxTheCat

Its never good when your hair is the most interesting part of your dress.
