This feels like a perfect marriage of dress and wearer to us.

Butterflies, by virtue of being a mainstay of tween girl decor, homemade artwork and middle school style for decades, can be very tricky to pull off on a grown woman.  She’s got just the right sort of wry edginess to make it work, and just the right looks for it, too. We couldn’t see this working on, say, Gwyneth Paltrow, for example. On the other hand, it’s exactly the kind of risky dress we’d love to see on Angelina.

But that’s beside the point, because Lizzy looks amazing in it. Don’t much love the hairstyle, but we appreciate the attempt to do something with a little edge to it. LOVE that bracelet. So much, that we wish she’d saved it for an outfit that really sets it off. That’s just the kind of jewelry all the ladystars who prefer the current plain-white-dress trend should be reaching for.

    I want to be her

    • Raspberry2012

Maybe it’s because you have a big LESBIAN crush on her! Suck on THAT!! AIIIIIEEE YIIIII YIIIII YIIIII YIII!!!

(I’m sorry, as much as she’s evolved as an actress, she’ll always be Janis Ian from “Mean Girls” for me!)

      • Justine

        WELL DONE!

        • Raspberry2012

          (*Bows to you!*)

    • FridaStaire

      I want to do her!

  • Danielle

I’m not sure how I feel about the hair, but the dress and especially the bracelet look killer on her.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

I covet that bracelet! It is absolutely gorgeous!

  • RussellH88

The hair is kind of sloppy, but I think she looks great. The entire dress seems made to almost counter the inherent girlishness of the butterflies. It’s a really great balance and I think she carried it over into her overall look.

    • Emily Giovanni

you know, as I was scrolling through the pictures, I was thinking that she is definitely not as put-together as a lot of lady stars. I am not sure I’d go as far as sloppy, but maybe messy. I think it’s a big part of her appeal though.

      • RussellH88

I can get behind that, but I think that it needs to look a bit more deliberate.

      • fursa_saida

Yeah, it works for her, at least in my opinion. She and Lena Headey would make quite a pair.

  • Karen Belgrad

I wish she’d had a butterfly backdrop like the model…That being said, I wish the feather decal from the collar was omitted. Other than that, love.

    • BLauDGaspode

You know, I had to scroll back to see the feather detail. I didn’t even notice it the first two times I scrolled through.

    • macaroni

See, I LOVE the collar, and kinda wish she’d had the feathered caps sleeves as well. BUT…hair up.

      • Intrepido bambino

I love the collar too and loved the sleeve detailing too. I’m assuming that the feathers were omitted since feather heavy looks aren’t featured on mainstream Hollywood red carpets as it tends to stir up outrage about animal rights in the same way that fur does. (Meanwhile everyone has leather accessories and jewellery featuring blood diamonds so it’s a bit of an arbitrary style guideline but whatever). Anyway I guess that was something I learnt from watching the Rachel Zoe Project.

  • Jessica Freeman

Hate the hair, could have been better with a pony tail. Love that dress.

    • Raspberry2012

A nice sleek ponytail would have been perfect – good call!

  • Emily Giovanni

Love this, except I wish the heinous fringe-y collar would go away.

  • Kathy

S’alright. Love the bracelet. Hate the collar.

    • Laura Renee

It does look heavier somehow, but I can’t tell if there’s actually more lining or fewer butterflies. I wonder how you request such an alteration: “Oh yes, I’d like that dress, but with fewer butterflies.”

      • Kathy

I’ll take more butterflies because–wait for it–butterflies are free. Okay, that was pretty bad, but I couldn’t resist.

        • evave2

Last week on Fashion Police they did a Gotta Have It/Make It Stop on use of insects in prints this year. I think it was 2-2 (and it seems to me they ALWAYS rah-rah whatever the NEWEST trend is). However I DO like the butterflies on this dress.

          • demidaemon

That’s unusual. It’s almost always unilateral agreement. The fact that there was disagreement is kind of amazing.

      • BLauDGaspode

I kept going back and forth between the pictures because it looks as if there are fewer butterflies on her version. I kind of dig the fewer butterflies I think.

    • Jane Patterson

I think that might just be proper lighting on the model vs. red carpet flashes.

  • James

Hate the hair. Would have preferred the full dress like on the model because the collar works much better then but she looks great. Love the bracelet.

  • marlie

This dress is pretty amazing on her. I wish they’d gotten rid of the feathers at the neckline as they did with the ones on the shoulders, but It’s a really striking look, and it works for her. I don’t want to like the hair, but it actually doesn’t bother me. And that bracelet is to DIE for. Though I’d worry all night about it snagging the dress.

    • Alicia

I actually have a skirt with a butterfly-embroidered net overlay and I have to be very careful with choosing the accessories (and where I sit down) when I wear it for just that reason.

  • Kent Roby

Her hair’s pretty messy, but here it adds to the overall bohemian vibe; I likey.

  • marlie

Also, the detail on the butterflies is really exquisite.

  • Wink

Sparkly butterflies? Make it strapless and Mariah Carey will be delighted to squeeze into it.

    • evave2

Oh, I CAN see Mariah in that dress.

  • Capt. Renault

My imaginary girlfriend indeed looks pretty terrific here. But when does my imaginary girlfriend not look terrific?

  • Anna

Thought this was Lorde at first. She looks terrific though, styled perfectly for her.

  • Alicia

That bracelet is divine. That hair is not.

    • kimmeister

At first glance, I thought her hair was shaved underneath.

      • Alicia

Would’ve been better if it was!

  • Diane Iafrate

I need to have that bracelet… the hair is a bit off-kilter.. but the dress is amazing on her.

    • Heather

I also need to have that bracelet. It’s amazing.

  • mjude

    love the look

  • Denise Rambo

I prefer the runway version with the fuller skirt.

    • evave2

So do I, but I actually think the dress might be better a little shorter. I don’t know about Critics’ Choice Awards, are they very formal?

  • luluransom

So pretty. That hair is giving her a weird head lump, but everything else is so lovely, I forgive.

  • starryharlequin

Fashion terminology question from the ill-informed: why is this called a butterfly print? It looks like embroidery or applique…

  • Man Dala

She looks so relaxed and confident, her eyes are saying: “Yes. I’m looking fabulous, I know.”

  • smayper

Love her, love the dress. Which is amazing, because I am with the Uncles that on another woman it could have been a disaster. I also love the relief from cutouts, boob-baring, leg-baring, way-too-small everything. She isn’t showing any skin to speak of and she looks fantastic and sexy. I can’t see what she has on her feet, but it isn’t “nudist,” nor is it putty-colored, for which I am deeply grateful.

    • Whever

Umm… pretty sure the top half is entirely sheer. Multiple levels of sheer, to be sure, but yeah. Those butterflies are the only things hiding her headlights. It’s a fantastic look, from the hair on down, but not precisely “modest”.

      • kimmeister

Yeah, I don’t like the fact that it has me wondering if she’s wearing underwear (on the bottom) or not.

  • NurseEllen

Now, THIS would have been the time for her to deploy one of those loose updos that seem to be sweeping the country…..I don’t think her hair is at all flattering in these photos, although I appreciate that the idea was to show the ear cuff. I love that the dress was tailored for her obviously small frame–I think all the pouffiness of the full skirt and gathering at the waistline, which is seen in the model, would have overwhelmed Miss Lizzy. Agree, the bracelet is just wonderful.

I see Zooey Deschanel getting her hands on this dress, having it shortened, and wearing it to some future event. Seems right up her alley.

    • Laura Abrahamsen

      With opaque black tights.

  • Vivi N

I like the dress, as well. LOVE the bracelet, cute earrings. I just wished she wore the model’s version mainly because of the sleeves.

  • ballerinawithagun

Perfect for her, she still has the arms for that cap style of sleeve, the fit is perfect and most importantly the mesh is lined!!! Love the jewelry and if her hair would have been asymmetric and short (not quite shaved) it would have been divine. (Says my envious self who wore mesh and asymmetric hair in the 80s!)

    • kimmeister

The mesh is lined . . . with more mesh.

  • Grumpy Girl

This just looks so lovely (aside from the hair)! And the bracelet: must have the bracelet! I’m sure it’s awkward as hell to wear, as you move your wrist (hand bumping pointy part), but it looks so cool, and I want it with great passion.

  • Lori

I don’t like the hair or the fringed collar much, but the rest of this is really working on her. It’s amazing how much better the dress looks when it’s not in front of that distracting wallpaper & it doesn’t have the fringe sleeves, which seemed weird just for the sake of being weird.

  • Sophie

Love the dress, though I would have liked her to go for the feathered shoulders as well. Not sold on the hair and earring.

  • Therese G.

Keep the jewelry, lose the butterfly fungus.

  • elemspbee

She makes us see this dress differently and realize its other possibilities. Love.

  • MarissaLG

I hate shit with butterflies on it, but she rocked it. I wish they would have left the feather sleeves. Love the hair, love the jewelry, love the actress.

  • Gatto Nero

Love the dress, and much prefer the less-fussy version Lizzy is wearing to that on the model. The only thing I might change is the hair (styled to show off the ear cuff — which she doesn’t need).

  • shirab

Her attitude always puts me in mind of Jo Polniaczek. In a good way.

  • Monabel

I like all this, including the collar. It’s stealthy and witty.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I like the dress, but I don’t like the collar. This could have been a WERQ if she had fixed her hair.

  • ashtangajunkie

Gorgeous. If she insisted on this hairstyle, then I wish they would have done it with a bit more polish, instead of the messy-ish way it is. I love that bracelet, but it gets kind of lost against the butterfly fabric.

  • Julie

I have a soft spot for Lizzy Caplan, if only for her appearance in “Fashion Film.” A highly recommended 2.0 watch.

  • LadyVimes

The bracelet doesn’t go with the dress, but I love them both. And I completely agree regarding the edginess and the twee.

  • MilaXX

Cute! As a typically anti-butterfly wearing lady, I approve. Minor quibble; I like the bracelet, but wish the earring was a solid color.

  • Imasewsure

Fantastic dress. It looks like they made a lot of slight modifications from the model’s version (a bit less skirt? more sheer? different bodice and sleeves?) but I really like it. Don’t mind the nothing hair and love love the bracelet

  • FibonacciSequins

I love Lizzy, so I’m pleased to see her looking smashing. And pockets!

  • Raspberry2012

I’m not crazy about the hair, but that’s about all that’s not working. Everything else is gorgeous! The dress is perfect for her, love the way the bracelet looks, and her makeup is pretty, but not overdone – it doesn’t compete with what she’s wearing. I wish the hair wasn’t so tragic, because she could really have been 100% perfect if it had been different.

  • Lilithcat

That dress doesn’t need jewelry. And a sleeker hairstyle would be better, as well.

    But it’s a fabulous dress.

  • random_poster

The bracelet is gorgeous, and the dress is perfect for her.

  • Sara Leigh Merrey

This is great, but I like the version of the dress on the model better.

  • suzq

Love Lizzie and her dress. Hate her hair.

  • Lily

Love this dress, but agree the hair is actually a distraction here. The feathers on the collar have such a Victoriana feel, that having her hair pulled back would set it off more. On another note, will the earrings-cum-wings trend please end now? It wasn’t exciting in the 90s and it’s not attractive now.

  • NinjaCate

I thought this was Jessica Szor all the way from seeing the thumbnails on the mainpage, clicking it, and scrolling down to the second picture. What.

  • KinoEye

Bracelet, get on my wrist! Love the color story and the embellishments. Lizzy looks smashing.

  • fananafanafophalec

    Courtney act’s evil sister

  • GoAwayKardash

LOVE it. Would ADORE it if the dress was ankle length.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Excellent work, Lizzy.

  • JP

Love every bit of this look!

  • judybrowni

Lizzy does it so much better than the model.
Who, poor thing, looks like a Victorian child raised in an attic.

  • Gorengirl

Want the Dress!! Give it to me!!

  • Mothra

I love the dress. I hate the hair. Does she not own a hairbrush?

  • E.Nelson

Lizzy Caplan: the American Eva Green.

  • cat772

I would never take that bracelet off.

  • demidaemon

Love the dress. Hate the hair.

  • JynxTheCat

that bracelet is SUPER cool. There is a lot of uninspired jewelry design these days – the theme seems to be BIG and little else. This si sublime.
