Liam Hemsworth in Portofino

Posted on June 27, 2014

And now, someone who’s on top of their cuffing game.

Every summer we have a debate about cuffing our shorts (It’s in our nature, darlings. You wouldn’t believe the things we sit around and discuss.) and every summer we come to the conclusion that we can’t pull it off.  Liam, on the other hand, can. In fact, we’re loving this whole look, top to … ankles. Everything else has a little style to it, from the cuffed shorts to the striped tank, but that footwear is disappointingly bland. At the very least, let’s lose the white footie-socks, Liam.

And now the White Footie-Sock Brigade will weigh in with a response.

Celebs-they’re-just-like-us: They struggle with the battle between skank foot and visible sock line!
I can’t admit how many pairs of socks of various heights/lows I own trying win this war.

    • Violentcello

Or colors. Black socks for my black converse, white socks for my white converse … wait, I’m seeing another problem here.

  • FibonacciSequins

I wouldn’t complain if his shirt were pressed and his shorts were washed, but I feel you, uncles. It’s a great beachy summer look. I would have given him a pair of old-school Converse to finish it off, minus the socks.

  • another_laura

I just want to go to the bar where I can choose from among a Bellini, a Rossini, a Mojito and a Cosmo. You can have your white footie socks.

    • FibonacciSequins

After a few Bellinis or Mojitos, who cares about socks?

      • Mr. J.

FINALLY, someone is telling it like it is is is….Liam can wear WHATEVER HE WANTS. Kittens are fretting about SOCKS?!?!?!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

A bar where my drink choices are from Bellinis, Cosmos, Mojitos and my man choices are among Chris Hemsworth, Liam Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Joe Mangianello…you get my drift. A woman can dream, no?

          • Mr. J.

Your choices are superb….and a man can dream too. Or a girl…..whatever.

            Thanks! We can ALL dream….

      • Kent Roby

I heard that lots of drinking can lead to socks. Wait, no; that is probably SEX.

  • smayper

Some one is on top of HIS cuffing game. Thank you, this has been a message from the grammar police.

    • Whever

Ye Olde Grammar Police (or would that be Ye Olde Grammar Constables?) would disagree with you, as they/their have been used as singular pronouns for centuries.

      • I believe smayper is correct on this. First part of sentence is some “ONE”, singular, so “his” is preferred since that’s also singular. “Their” is plural. However, common practice is to interchange singular and plural pronouns in this context, so the opening line conforms to the vernacular usage, and can’t really be called wrong.
I should have gone into the diplomatic corps.

    • Their is an acceptable singular personal pronoun, isn’t it?

      • demidaemon

In this case, it is correct, as TLo is referring, generally, to the entire male celebrity populace, not just Liam.

      • Fanny_Trollope

In general, yes, it is. “Though the masculine singular pronoun may survive awhile longer as a generic term, it will probably be displaced ultimately by ‘they,’ which is coming to be used alternatively as singular or plural. This usage is becoming common.” Source: Bryan A. Garner, “Garner’s Modern American Usage,” Oxford University Press, 2003. Why yes, I am a copy editor. Why do you ask?

        • conniemd

Good to know. I hate using the masculine him or his to refer to a generic person who may well be a female. I default to they or their as less clumsy than his/her. I feel gramatically incorrect when I do so (being generally a grammar Nazi) but I feel worst using sexist words.

      • smayper

Technically, sure. But in this case, since TLo are referring to a specific individual male, there is no need for “their.” The reason for its use (and acceptability) is to solve the problem of “his/him/he” being used as the default neutral pronoun, with all the sexism that brings. When writing about specific individuals with defined gender, there is no reason not to use the correct pronoun. Ahem (adjusts glasses, goes back to grading papers).

  • @Biting Panda

He has giant hands. I like that. I like that a lot.

  • Glam Dixie

Mmmmm, beefy sausage cake. I prefer the brother but I wouldn’t kick him out. Sometimes I’m inclined to judge him harshly for being with Miley, but today I’ll let it slide.

    • hyperionic

He dumped her ass last year and moved on. And he was with her before she went wild.

      • Glam Dixie

        Yeah but still, Miley.

  • hughman

    FSBs (Footy Sock Brigade), UNITE!!

    • StellaZafella

I’m a footysocker and proud of it! hee, hee.

    • H2olovngrl

Pom poms, huh? Sooo…you’ve owned all of your footy socks since 1982?

  • JulieK

Footy socks are better than stank shoe, amirite?

  • lundibleu

Poor Liam, he wouldn’t be able to win this one – with socks some people will hate them, without then the other half the people (me included) would go “eww, no socks! ming!”

Anyway, ignoring that he looks good, although his clothes look a little too artfully rumpled.

  • Mothra

One hand is in my pocket and the other one is coyly pointing to my package. LOOK AT IT! No, don’t look at my footies that I borrowed from my gramma. Or my “boyfriend” shorts with the cuffs.

  • hyperionic

I think anyone can wear cuffed shorts. They just have to be the right shorts.

  • I think if the shoes were navy it’d be better. I don’t mind the footy socks – I believe in comfort.

  • nannypoo

I like it. I’d prefer a more substantial sneaker, but overall this is a really good look.

  • KinoEye

My favorite Hemsworth. I’d been missing him. Bless his parents for putting not one, but three genetically superior male specimens into the world. They deserve awards.

Also, T&Lo, what I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall during such discussions as cuffing or not cuffing.

    • susan6

Seriously….Mama Hemsworth is up there with Mama Manning in terms of producing genetically gifted sons.

  • BlairBear

The really wide and low mens t shirts necklines just look so off to me . I mean I’m all for tits out but it’s just off to me . Perhaps he should remove it

    • lundibleu

That would work for me too. I’m not a fan of these tshirt necklines either – buy a vest if you want that sort of revealing.

      • BlairBear

I’m all for mens chests but just go whole hog and go shirtless

    • FrigidDiva

To me they always look like they’ve been stretched out.

      • BlairBear

        Yeah I can see that

  • Imasewsure

Practical and cute… good enough for a day out and about!! Jealous….

  • WinterSantiaga

But you can buy footie-socks that are not visible..

    • Linda LaPaz

      I have 5 or 6 pair!

  • Oh, Liam? A few years ago, I bought one of those “map of Italy” dish towels they’re selling at the stand behind you, but it’s all worn out and the colors are gone. Could you pick up a couple of new ones for me, per favore? Personal delivery appreciated. Grazie, amore.

  • MaggieMae

Oh no. Not the low scoop. Is that back? Why do I suddenly have a Bee Gees song on my head?

    • Wink

“Tragedy” is the Bee Gees song that comes to mind.

      • MaggieMae

        PERFECT, lol

  • jilly_d

He’s extremely cute but holy Jesus there have been some ugly mother effing boy clothes today and I am sad to disagree with Uncles on this one.

  • Danielle

I don’t know if I’m completely on board with the neckline on his tank top.

  • HobbitGirl

I appreciate the probable absence of stank-foot that the socks provide. As a stank-foot sufferer myself, I applaud his efforts.

    Big brother’s still hotter, though.

  • Is that a Brooks Bros tank top?

  • Can I order one of those from Room Service?

  • MilaXX

White footie socks FTW!!! Actually I’m okay either with or without. My line in the sand are are black socks. Liam looks perfects here. No complaints..

  • e jerry powell

Another couple inches on that neckline and we’ll be in Bad Mommy territory.

  • snarkykitten

Look man, if you’re going for the Canadian Tuxedo Summer Edition, at least match your denims.

  • suzq

I’m sure Liam is as mortal as any of us and those pants are designed to stay cuffed. The shirt, on the other hand…those rolls are enough to hide a joint or two (or three) in them. Impressive.

    • suzq

Also, not sure from here if those are footie sox or the design of the shoe. Either way, I think they’re cute.

  • Nazzzy

There is no fashion offense I would not forgive if committed in a war against stank-shoes.

  • carolie_king

I’m wearing footie socks RIGHT NOW. In athletic shoes, after a bike ride with my son. My eye immediately went to his, and I don’t think that’s where I should be looking.

  • greymain

    him…I GET.

  • housefulofboys

I want to be in Portofino!! Um, regaining my composure now. He looks very Italian Riviera.

  • KT

Mmmm I wore this exact outfit just last weekend, so I’m feeling weird about this.

  • Dino Bonačić

He looks SO normal that I can’t fight the feeling of ‘come on buddy, let’s have a beer’ coming from myself. Normal-guy-WERQ!!!! 😀

  • Tami from Seattle

OHMYGOD, I am so glad someone is wearing socks with their shoes.

  • Patricia Hoffman

He looks like the boat captain in Dr. No, but with less personality. And more leg.

  • susan6

What kind of socks are folks allowed to wear? Because…except for sandals….I cannot wear shoes without socks or stockings. My feet get sweaty and stinky, and in some cases the shoes chafe and hurt my bare feet. What is a person with delicate feet supposed to do? (I know stockings are completely passe, but, for some reason stores still sell them, so there must be enough people out there buying them….)

  • When I saw the footies, I knew the Uncles weren’t going for those, but otherwise, Liam’s looking quite good.

  • quiltrx

He’s in Italy out and about, walking on cobblestones. I say YAY to footie-sock..better than stank sneaker and blisters!
    I love his hair.

  • Violetophelia

I seriously thought this was John Krasinski! Either way, he looks good!

  • R. L.

    Footies are more comfy.

  • CPK1

Love the look (excellent cuffing) but he should lose the socks and get a decent pair of shoes.

  • marlie

I don’t even mind the white footies. Not a bad “on the street” look, especially if one is on vacation.

  • formerlyAnon

I need not comment on socks, WendyD has it handled.

He looks so much like one of my kids’ very nice friends who just spent a year going to the gym regularly to beef up, that I can’t work up any enthusiasm whatsoever.

  • kimmeister

This is so perfectly put together it looks like it’s a movie scene from the 50’s. Like he should be at Coney Island with Saoirse Ronan (or wherever the heck her upcoming period movie takes place).

  • Cathy S

    He’s adorable.

  • Kimberlini

The socks ruin it. Make me think he has a fungus problem.

  • JynxTheCat

    Hello cool summer breeze.
