Laura Vandervoort in The 2nd Skin at the 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards

Posted on June 17, 2014

It took us a while to figure out why this look bothered us. It’s not the garment, which we like (even if the fit’s a little off). In fact, we have no real issue with any of her fashion/accessory choices here.

So what’s got us bitching? Can you find the clues, reader? Scroll to the bottom and then turn your monitor upside-down to find the answer!

Okay, we were bullshitting you on that whole “turn your monitor upside-down” thing. Sorry. ¬†Please refer all legal questions about getting your now-broken monitor replaced to [email protected]

Anyway, what’s bugging us here? It’s the head. She really needed to scale back on the paint job and the severe hair. A blowout and a much cleaner face would’ve been the way to go here. She could’ve taken this somewhere summer-chic, but she’s borderline drag queen. In a similar vein, while we don’t mind the accessories, we think sandals and a less complicated clutch could’ve helped too. She just looks too … fembot.

I think she overcompensated for the retro sweetness of the dress with too hard accessories.

  • Glam Dixie

That is a literal Pony Tail. Like I feel bad for the poor pony who can no longer swat flies. Poor little guy.

        “They called him Wildfire…”

        • DebbieLovesShoes

          Hahahaha stop it

      • DebbieLovesShoes

        laughing more

    • Ivanson

      So SO good!

      • smayper

OH MY GOD I had forgotten that song completely!! And now I will have it my head for days. Damn, I used to love it when I was 10. My first sense of “tragedy.”

  • sugarkane105

Loved everything until I scrolled down to the ratty, Barbie ponytail.

    • sienna elm

The fact that the pony tail is the wrong colour for the rest of her hair is driving me crazy!

    • schadenfreudelicious

Yup, reminds me of the ponytails that pulled in and out of my dolls heads as a child, they were about as polished.

    • demidaemon

I noticed something off before I even saw how truly awful it was. When you can see a clear demarcation in hair tone, something has gone terribly wrong.

  • Coleen

I thought this said “Laura Voldemort” at first and you were going to complain about her nose contouring.

    • Introspective

      dying right now at this

    • Anna

She should change it to “Laura Voldemort,” might make her more memorable!

    • lecoffeeaddict

      omg I thought that too.

  • @Biting Panda

I did not know there was a Brady Bunch on Ice show.

  • Introspective

the godawful hair. the minnie mouse too big pumps. the distracting clutch. the troweled on face. the too teensy skirt. should i continue?

    • Introspective

omg & that earring??? girl stop. you are not as cute as you seem to think you are. (yes i replied to myself. cause i saw more fugly shit to continue snarking on laura voldemort here)

  • MilaXX

I’m a makeup gal so I don’t mind the face. I’m not crazy about the shoe, but my biggest grip is the 10lbs of yaki in far too blond a shade hanging from that ponytail.

    • smayper

      What is yaki?

      • MilaXX

        a type of weave hair

        • smayper

Ah. I was way over in Japanese food.

  • Kitten Mittons

I wish the collar contrasted a little. I didn’t even notice it the first two times I looked. Gives the dress a sweetness I didn’t pick up on at first.

I like this overall. Don’t know who she is, but she put in the effort, which I appreciate more when I don’t know who they are.

    • kimmeister

I only recognize her from the show V.

      • Kitten Mittons

Yeah, I looked her up, and I’ve only seen pieces of things she’s done. I haven’t even seen Ted all the way through. I know I’m behind on movies, but I feel like I watch waaay to much tv, and there’s still so much that passes me by.

  • lobsterlen

Don’t these gals get pony tail head aches?

  • kmk05

Her face is a different colour to the rest of her body, which makes me sad.

ETA: SHE’S 29. 29! She looks like she’s pushing 40 with this face, it’s ridiculous.

    • kimmeister

I think her hands match her face, it’s just her legs that are 3 shades darker.

      • kmk05

No, look at her neck! This is like a bad puzzle T_T it may actually be the flash photography, though: things at the forefront with some topography (her face, her hands) are just whitened. Or I may be trying to find excuses.

    • demidaemon

What? Really? Something has gone terribly wrong here with her head styling.

  • Shawn EH

Looks like she’s been on a severe diet since the Supergirl days.

  • Lex

Too “ice skating costume” for me with that collar. Also, looks very heavy for spring-summer. Not a fan.

  • MoHub

I also have a problem with the zipper placket not lying right in the back.

    • DuBey2

Well, that’s what the long pony tail is supposed to cover up, silly!

      • MoHub

How foolish of me not to realize that!

        • DuBey2

): I am, of course, referencing the hatred which so many BKs expressed about the long, equine look of her pony tail.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

This would be a darling dress for a holiday cocktail party; I’m not feeling it for June.

  • LadyVimes

I love the accessories, but the dress with that hair feels very Disco Barbie.

  • SophieCollier

Clutches are useless. You can see hers doesn’t even close.

  • Gaspode

My biggest fashion pet peeve currently is those earrings all the way up the ear. They really bug for me some reason, and this is now the the third lady today with them on. I wish they’d go away…

  • Kent Roby

That is a really cute dress; I love having the collar out of the same sequined fabric.

  • Lori

I agree about the hair & make-up, although it took me a minute to notice them because I was distracted by what’s going on with her boobs. She needed a better bra or something, because whatever is gong on there isn’t working. I do like the dress though.

  • frannyprof

What bugs me about this is I have NO idea who this gal is. None.

  • TinyDynamo

That dress is seriously some Glam March Easter Fancyness. Which totally doesn’t match at all with the makeup, or the nightmare-inducing hair. Or should I say night Mare.

  • fiddlecub

Sorry, but all I can see is how the pose and camera angle make it look like her left leg has been in some horrible accident.

  • JauntyJohn

If Jeannie’s evil sister, Jeannie, blinked herself up a cute little cocktail dress that could double as a go-go dancing ensemble, then this might be it.
Love the color and the little color really makes it work.
I guess it’s the hair that took me to “I Dream of…”

    • DuBey2

AHAH! NOW I know why I like it so much. Thanks for elucidating.

  • Lily

It’s rare I like any long-sleeve, sequined, thigh-high creation. They usually remind me of gilded suits of armor, much too heavy for that little fabric. This one has a lightness about it that I really enjoy. The color and pattern and wonderful, and the collar gives it a demure sweetness that keeps the dress from diving straight into the pit of boredom. I also like the very slight flare on the sleeves. The accessorizing doesn’t bother me too much, but agree the hair’s a bit heavy handed.

  • prisma

When I first saw the pic I didn’t pay attention to her dress (a color I love) as much as I did her eyebrow situation (phrase TM Michael K of Dlisted). Her eyebrow situation is 100 percent drag queen.

    • Lily

I hadn’t even noticed the eyebrows and now they’re all I look at. LOL!

  • lecoffeeaddict

Those are some fancy Daisy Duck shoes.

    • suzq

They look like a version of Jellies we used to wear in the 80’s.

  • amanda siegelson

it’s amazing – of all the people on the show “instant star”, she was not the one i thought would find work… i like this look – it’s very sharon tate and i can always get behind that.

  • ShaoLinKitten

For me, what doesn’t work is how distracting her boobs are. They look like two softballs canted off in opposite directions. I couldn’t pay attention to anything else.

  • demidaemon

Okay, someone fill me in here. What is she from?

Now that I have gotten that out of the way, I will say that I’m just not feeling this. The hair is definitely “OH GOD NO” but the sum of the parts just leaves me feeling nothing. Enh.

  • marlie

Cute dress, but way overdone makeup, and I hate the extensions that she’s slapped onto the back of her head to make a ponytail. Sandals would have been better, but these shoes are OK.

  • DuBey2

    I love it all. Fembot!

  • SophieB210

I really thought it would be the Lee’s press-on nails.

  • kim bunchalastnames

… is it the name, “vandervoot”?

  • Sophie

The clutch is ma favourite part here. I do like the colours as well – this shade of blue with the gold clutch and the silver shoes.

  • grasshack

    Mermaid got an office job!

  • livesarah

Yeah, the fake hair is all wrong. But she is stupidly pretty.

  • Laura Livingston

There is a big disconnect in the sparkly twee dress and adult film star head.

  • lalahartma

  • Tami from Seattle

That fabric reminds me of the wallpaper in my house circa 1972.
