Kiernan Shipka in Marni at the 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards

Posted on June 16, 2014

Continuing our tradition of giving y’all something simple, pretty and easy to digest to start your week off right. It’s because we care so much, darlings. And also because our asses are dragging this morning.

Boob peplums are weird and we hate the very idea of them on a cellular level.

Okay, then. With that out of the way, this is a super-cute look otherwise. From the perfect hair and makeup down to the perfect little  sandal. Major “Attagirl” for this one, Kiernan. Well done. But do try and stay away from boob peplums from now on, dear.

  • Boob peplums (pepla?) are bad but asymmetrical peplums that look like bracket fungus are even worse. But she looks so damn pretty!

    • MoHub

The asymmetry just looks as if someone in the sewing room made a mistake, and it was too late to fix it.

      • Carrie

Agreed. How did no one look at that and go “maybe we should reconsider this.”

        • Bad Idea Jeans

Indeed. Asymmetrical peplums look good on nobody. Shame on Marni for ruining an otherwise very Kiernan-appropriate dress.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

Without the boob pepla (thanks for that, Alicia!), this would be simply adorable on Kiernan-she’s still making this look pretty cute, though.

      • Monabel

Or the person in the sewing room was giving a choice, and the customer couldn’t decide which peplum location, so went with both?

      • makeityourself

What? You don’t like side-mullet boob peplums?

    • pepia mammaria?

      • bitchybitchybitchy

For the win-well done for a Monday!

    • StarburstLady

Did they have to be in a flesh tone, too? I’m really freaked out by this whole dress, and all its odd appendages.

    • Kitten Mittons

It’s like playing with a paper doll. Everything else is perfection, just loosen the paper tabs at the back, and swap out that dress for another one.

Her hair, makeup, and skin are just lovely. And her natural cuteness is killing me, even with only one cup of coffee.

    • sienna elm

As silly as it looks, she can pull this off only because she’s so young (with amazing fashion sense) if she were two years older it would just be ridiculous.

    • Anglow

      Pepla, peplatum. Negatum.

      • DuBey2

And… thats our Latin conjugation for the day…

    • SugarSnap108

Are they even full-on pepla, or just flaps in the front of the dress? They look like flippers to me, like her boobs are going scuba diving.

    • Mrs. Julien

    • Danielle

    • clevRcat

It looks like one of my infamous (among my family) sewing disasters.

    • smayper

Agree completely on both! When I looked up close, the pepla looked particularly bad, but when I looked from a distance, the fabric and her perfect face took over, and I could stand it.

    • oldscrumby

Peplums. It’s one of those words that could have come from Latin or Greek so it didn’t hold onto it’s pluralization.

      • I know. It just sounds awkward – which leads me to believe that god didn’t intend us to refer to them in the plural.

        • demidaemon

You are probably right. For some people, even the singular can be hard to handle. The plural is nearly too much for everyone.

  • JasmineAM

I think the sandals are too adult? They’re really cute, though.

    • *tilts head* Just curious, what about those sandals make them too adult?

      • Cindy

The sandals look sexy, a look that I personally don’t associate with children.

        • quiltrx

For me, they aren’t really any sexier than the ‘bare’ sandals and flips I see younger girls than her wearing around town.
And certainly less sexy than the too-often-seen tiny ‘cheerleader’ shorts (with things like ‘juicy’ on the butt and cheeks hanging out).

  • thecitysleeps

What the fuck are those two tiered peplums? So ugly. A perfectly good dress without that shit on it. Lovely colour and embellishment. And she’s so pretty and lovely.

  • Jessica Freeman

I hate that the peplum is hiked up on one side, otherwise I wouldn’t hate it as much. Her face though. She’s so beautiful .

  • msgypsy

That would be such a lovely dress had the seamster/ess not been drunk when hemming the boob peplum.

    • MoHub

Hemming? I think she totally fitted it into the wrong seam.

  • Sorry, nope. The colors and embellishment are great, and she is adorable as usual. That dress needs to Go Away Now, and never come back.

  • This is just evidence that I don’t care what she wears, I just love her. 🙂 And the shoes, gorgeous.

She overcomes the awful fashions with her awesomeness and THAT SMILE!

The people in the background are giving some resting bitch face to equal January Jones in some of the shots, and how can they not be excited to see Kiernan? This is an unfortunate background to the awesomeness of Kiernan. We’re cancelling your BIEBER until you show KIERNAN some love. 🙂

    • Kitten Mittons

I can’t stop laughing at all the teenage angst and boredom in the background. Thanks for pointing that out.

Fun game: Can you count all the cell phones in the crowd?

      • They’ve probably been there for hours and still have not seen who they came to see but when that person gets there they’ll take photos instead of enjoying that moment. I’m a bit baffled by it but if they enjoy themselves good on them. 🙂

I’ve been around long enough to know the images available of events like this will be 10 zillion times better than anything I take, so I don’t even get the camera out anymore. 😉

        • Kitten Mittons

I admit that I’m guilty of that, but getting better with age. Mostly because I have no time to do anything with the pictures I take except let them sit on my phone/sd card.

      • Introspective

i dont look forward to the day my toddler turns into a moody and annoying teen. that scowling horde behind kiernan is just such an indication of why…

kiernan is adorbs. to die for hair and smile. beautiful despite the shit going on with her bodice and the way its making my teeth itch.

        • Grumpy Girl

I tell myseld, I can be happy that one of my klds turned into a moody and annoying teen. Because it is normal. So much easier than dealing with something more bizarre (or heaven forfend, tragic–but I wasn’t trying to go there.)

        • Kitten Mittons

Me either, I was loving on my sweet toddler this morning and thinking a similar thought. But, as Grumpy Girl pointed out below, there is a silver lining to all the scowling, in that it’s normal and better than other alternatives.

My mom’s mantra when I start fussing about the “Terrible Twos” or some other baby-behavior issue is “It’s just a phase, and phases are temporary.”

That doesn’t mean I don’t want to collect all those phones in a basket and say, “You can have them back at the end of the evening.”

    • Anna

Ah…I remember trying so hard to look cool at that age! My friends and I were watching the red carpet arrivals from the balcony of his condo and we were all shrieking like dorks when we saw Kiernan, followed by, “Girl, NO!” at the peplum.

      • Kitten Mittons

I’m very jealous right now. I assume she is as adorable in person?

        • Anna

We were pretty high up, but even from that distance her adorableness is undeniable!

I also can’t help but think that the bored-looking teenagers probably don’t really know who she is, I can’t imagine too many of them watch Mad Men. But I could be totally wrong.

          • Kitten Mittons

Hadn’t thought of that, I bet you’re right.

            Darn kids. *shakes fist*

          • Anna

On the other hand, we didn’t know who half the people were that they were so excited about ;-). It was really just an excuse to hang out and snark collectively with a pitcher(s) of margaritas.

          • Kitten Mittons

Yes, well, we all need those excuses from time to time. It keeps us sane.

Besides, I hear this Jonathan Beebler is all the rage right now. *sips coffee and pretends there’s booze in it*

          • Anna

Or as Dwight Schrute says, “Who’s Justice Beaver?!”

    • penguinmom

They probably lit up when that 18-year-old Kardashian sister (please don’t ask me to care enough to keep their names straight) showed up with her dual slits up to her navel (literally!). What a shame. One of their peers dressed age-appropriate, with minimal makeup and loads of class? They are beyond bored. What a shame.

  • Anna

Ugh. This looks like the person sewing the dress was hammered and didn’t line the pieces up properly.

But she is too fucking cute.

    • Grumpy Girl

Yes, with that smile, she raises the level of tolerance for the outfit. But it’s kind of funny to think of hte hammered seamstress . . .

  • GillianHolroyd

How can you object to the boob peplums and completely miss the disappearing-into-her-flesh color of the dress?

    • alliekat9090

Now see I look at it altogether differently. To me she looks “creamy” from head to toe. I think you have to be a kid to get away with that , however.

    • kimmeister

I noticed the color too, but against all odds, the color doesn’t look bad on her. Probably because of the jeweled embellishments.

  • Sophie

She has a fantastic smile. Isn’t that dress (peplum(s) aside) just a bit too close to her skin tone? Anyway, I am not convinced by the dress.

  • Carrie

There had to have been a way to better embellish that dress. I still can’t hate though, she looks beautiful and age appropriate which is an incredibly rare combination these days!

    • Grumpy Girl

Yeah, I think she’s still young and not-over-developed enough to get away with a lot more of that peplum than others would.

  • BLauD

The peplums are just so awkward. I have to seriously question who thought, “Yes! Uneven boob peplums are the perfect way to make this dress sing!”, and further, who convinced Kiernan of this wacky idea.

  • What is scattered all over the red carpet? Feathers? Was there a pillow fight?

VERY odd ensemble. The print & colors remind me of a pair of flannel pj’s I had when I was probably around 12 (minus the jeweled embellishments). Right now I’d rather see Kiernan in those pj’s than this schmatte.

    • No idea what is going on with the feathers – didn’t even spot them before you mentioned it. 🙂

I never thought I would hanker for the usual step and repeat background, but this is one seriously distracting location for photos. :/

  • LadyVimes

Flesh colored boob peplum makes it look like some sort of growth.

  • cat772

Is that dress fungus edible, do you think? Otherwise, it’s cute cute cute, and she looks perfect!

  • Her head is lovely! Hope you guys had an excellent relaxing weekend that wasn’t taken up by too much comment moderation. 🙂

  • Firecat

She is the only person on Earth who can wear that and not look like one of Picasso’s Les demoiselles d’Avignon!

  • nannypoo

I hate all peplums but would be willing to negotiate for the lower one going all the way around if we could just get rid of the top one.

  • moppet

So, er, the dress is challenging, as has been noted. But I see this as an attempt to transition from a youthful style to something a bit more fashion-forward (but still youthful.) This dress walks that line pretty well, I think.

But fashion forward doesn’t always work. Uneven chest-capes might be in category.

  • prisma

Why have boob peplums become a thing all of a sudden?

  • Anita Karenin

    she woke up like this

  • SugarSnap108

Her head is perfection, and I can ignore all else.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

    why is she so adorable?

  • Bower Bird

The girls in the background are fantastic. That part is a whole story, in and of itself.

    • Janice Bartels

Thank you for pointing out the hot, bored, unimpressed teenage crowd. It honestly elevates Kiernan’s look that much more.

  • Chickadeep

Adore everything but that Frankenbodice. The mint bag is such a cute choice for this outfit, and the shoes are great.

  • MilaXX

If you cover half the screen and only look at the side where the peplum is on the waist, it’s a really cute look.

    • alliekat9090

      Yes. Exactly.

  • Ozski

She looks flawless, as usual. Was Kiernan Shipka produced in a lab?? When will she suffer juvenile skin eruptions? How come she never had an awkward period? It isn’t right, I tell you!!

  • MW

I’m not crazy about the dress at all but her head looks spectacular!

  • weakforchic

a testament to her cuteness, she can even pull it off. Her stylist needs to go. She is a cutie patootie though.

  • AzSportsGirl

    Minorest of quibbles… ROOTS.

  • decormaven

Boo to the stylist that picked out that unfortunate frock for Kiernan. That’s star power in the fact she is making it work.

  • YourLibrarian

Man, she skipped right over the awkward stage of teenagerhood, didn’t she?

  • mrspotts66

    i want her purse.

  • Coleslaw McGraw

I just adore her and her smile and her poise but I do not like this dress. It looks like someone sewed it wrong.

  • Lori

That dress is just flat out weird, but she’s terrific.

  • Carleenml

I don’t care how many geegaws you stick on it, it’s still a towel. a towel with matching facecloths, that’s it.

  • KCF

Fantastic hair cut. This girl has got it going on.

  • Sugarbeetle

Can I hate her just a wee bit for skipping straight past the awkward teenager phase? Wow.

  • I don’t like the color, either.

  • msdamselfly

why is she coloring her hair at her age?

    • Because she’s an actress and regularly appears to be photographed on a red carpet?

      • not_Bridget

And she’s playing Betty’s daughter. Betty was probably blonde as a girl, even if she “helps” nature now. (Only her hairdresser knows for sure.)

        • She’s not playing Betty’s daughter on the red carpet, though. Elisabeth Moss went blond for a while, in spite of Peggy being a brunette.

    • Laylalola

Well, when I was her age I was abusing that Sun-In crap.

  • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

Very weirded out by the boob peplum.

  • Wink

For the love of fashion, please don’t let asymmetrical peplum become a thing. (Random thought… she reminds me of Cindy from the Brady Bunch.)

  • Terri Terri

Yeah, the one-up, one-down boob thing is not good. Otherwise, she looks adorable and poised as hell, as usual!

  • alliekat9090

The peplum thing is all off. Dress would have been perfect if not for that. Still pretty damn cute. She looks so young and healthy and fresh. Oh to be that age again and know what I know now………..

  • Shawn EH

Very cute. Working a very silly dress.

  • DominoEstella

No. There is no way you or anyone else can support that horrendous dress. She should know better and should have spat on her stylist for making her look at it on the damn hanger.

  • kfizz

I hate this. Simple, pretty, and easy to digest? Monday morning trolls you are, uncles.

  • Gatto Nero

My first thought was “Sweet — but hate the boob peplum.” And then I read TLo’s comments.
This dress didn’t need any appendages. Why do designers do this?

  • Kent Roby

Yeah, the dress is weird, but she looks so damn cute anyway. She could totally school most of the “old” (i.e. 20-something) starlets in how to rock the RC.

  • KT

WHY would anyone decide to make a boob peplum at all, but especially a ONE-BOOB-ONLY PEPLUM?? This is not easy to digest whatsoever, as this is simultaneously churning my stomach and blowing my mind. Wayyyy too much for 8am.

  • formerlyAnon

I couldn’t give an “attagirl” for this one, just a “you are so pretty and happy looking and the fabric is kinda pretty so I can’t hate it like it deserves.”

  • MissusBee

Random flouncy bits are really a thing, aren’t they? Crazy damn fashion.

  • zuzu

God, she really does look like a little Hammlet, doesn’t she?

  • Sara__B

Only Kiernan could make me coo happily at a dress with boob and waist peplums. She is such a pleasure.

    • Miss wks

Her fashion sense is so sophisticated. She is an amazing young woman.

  • girliecue

This dress would be genius for a young, fashion-conscious mom who is nursing.

  • melanie0866

  • Not my favorite look from Ms. Kiernan. But I’m sure she’ll bounce back.

  • frannyprof

I am SOOOOOO glad I came of age in the 80s, when child stars lacked any and all sense of style. If I were a teen/tween today, I don’t think I could handle Miss Shipka’s awesomeness.

  • demidaemon

Agreed. Boob peplums must die. It’s the newest trend! BLARGH.

Cute print and styling, though. Can’t get past the boob peplums.

  • Danielle

It looks like someone couldn’t figure out how to put the pattern together.

  • Ann VerWiebe

I would worry about a wool dress in summer. It could start shrinking as she is wearing it.

    • Sly

If it’s virgin wool, then it’s the perfect fabric for both summer and fall. It’s light enough to keep you cool, a perfect transitional fabric!

  • marlie

It’s the power of the Shipka that this dress isn’t immediately “out.” On our dear Kiernan, it looks pretty cute!

  • That smile lights up the red carpet. What a lovely lady. Yes, the peplums are a bit wonky, but I don’t care. She works it. She’s refreshing. And I love that little tint of pink in her hair.

  • HobbitGirl

    No tit ruffles. Ick.

It’s a very pretty dress otherwise.

  • Therese Bohn

If the ruffle was symmetric it would look a lot better. But I like the color and beading. Our little girl is growing up.

  • ktr33

    Asymmetrical Picasso Peplum.

  • Cousin_Rose

This is like the opposite of scroll down FUG. Her face in the first image is just so lovely that it doesn’t much matter how the rest of the outfit turns out as you go down through the photos.

  • Diva in 4 Inch Heels

Agreed. It’s a cute print, but the shape. Yikes!!

  • Alloy Jane

Cute clutch, that’s some terribly fried hair with roots, a dress with tit flaps, the naked sandals are nice. The look is a mixed bag of nuts but I just love that smile.

  • Laylalola

OMG is she the epitome of easy breezy beautiful.

  • quiltrx

You know how you put something together (usually from Ikea) and you have pieces left over? I have a feeling that’s what those boob peplums are, and the seamstress thought, “they must go SOMEWHERE.”

  • altermyego

Wait a minute, a WOOL summer dress??

  • Kelly

I hate that washed-out, institutional-hallway pink. And she’s starting to try to dress too advanced for her age. She’s so appealing and chic that it’s easy to forgive her flaws, but for me this look is edging toward “failed.”

  • ElaineMarie34

Love the beadwork – charming and whimsical without being juvenile. Yep, hate the felony bad peplum thing.

  • heartbot

    I want her hair!

  • thetechnosnob

    Now that’s a tit-screpancy if I ever saw one.
