Kerry Washington in Dolce&Gabbana at the 2014 BET Awards

Posted on June 30, 2014

Miss Kerry surveyed the summer red carpet landscape, snorted to herself and said, “Who are all these basic bitches showing up in black dresses in high summer? Pfft. It’s time to get my Lady Garden on.”

And thus it came to pass. And T Lo wept glittery tears of joy, because they’d about had it with basic bitches in black dresses.

And speaking of basic, that’s what this dress is. It’s not fashion-forward, but then again, we wouldn’t expect it to be, especially at the BET Awards, which has a red carpet populated by dragtastic and boobtastic gownery. It’s just a pretty, flowery, perfectly summertime dress – and that’s a rarity this summer among the red carpet set. Our only complaint is that the skirt’s a bit too stiff and bell-shaped. Also: she could use a little color on her lips, but that’s something we’ve been saying about 90% of the women on the RC lately.

We don’t mind the white shoes, but it’s fun to mentally pick out any of the colors in the dress and matching the shoes to them. It becomes a slightly different outfit each time. Picture an orange or yellow pump. Or even a purple one or lilac one.

It’s kinda stiff looking and her eyes look like she’s afraid the dress is suddenly going to explode or something.

But it’s a nice summer dress, she looks nice here.

  • Danielle

I scrolled down hoping for a tangerine pump. Was disappointed. Oh well, I’ll take it.

    • It is a little disappointing. 🙂 I’m just glad it wasn’t the Nudist shoe.

      • decormaven

        Hallelujah on that one.

    • Anna

A tangerine pump didn’t even cross my mind – that would’ve taken this look up a notch!

      • Danielle

I’m having a tangerine moment this summer. It’s a great color!

  • MilaXX

After watching the boob parade and how high on the pelvic bone can a slit go parade along with whatever the hell Keke Palmer was wearing, this look was practically a WERQ. It’s to Kerry’s credit that her bit when presenting was one of the few truly funny moments. At least until Nicki got up there and shaded Iggy Azeala.

    • Introspective

That shade Nicki threw was EPIC.

this dress is pretty. she looks damn good especially only a few wks after giving birth. I can definitely co sign on showing up looking like a lady when so many defaulted to hooch-tastic getups

    • KendraMR

KeKe looked like she was on her way to the set of the new Gladiator/300 movie, but decided to stop by the BET Awards.

As for Nicki, the shade was so unnecessary. She’s the bigger star and is constantly expanding her brand, no need to start a beef with rapper who’s virtually no threat to you.

      • AnaRoW

It’s Nicki. It’s what she does. Over the last few years she’s been in “feuds” with Rihanna, Steven Tyler, Mariah Carey, an ousted AI contestant, etc. I can’t remember ever seeing a bigger star who was more insecure. Even Kanye can turn the other cheek sometimes.

      • MilaXX

I think it was partially in response to Time magazine singing the praises of Iggy as the next great thing in female rap.

    • demidaemon

Pretty much my POV on the whole look.

  • RescueMe23

I hate white pumps and think they should be abolished. Other than that she looks great. I can’t wait to see the Red Carpet Rundown for the BET Awards!

    • FuhUgh

These pumps also look hideously uncomfortable – they are are a size (or more) too small. I suppose the uncles would have been merciless, but I rather like the matching shoes shown on the model.

  • AC Simons

Considering that she just had a baby, she looks wonderful. I love this print and the accessories, even the white shoes. The hair is a bit stiff, but she looks really pretty.

    • smayper

Not even considering! She looks great, period.

  • She is truly gorgeous. It is a pity the red carpet was held on the surface of the sun, thereby washing out.. well.. pretty much everything with glare.

Won’t someone get this poor girl some sunglasses and an umbrella? 🙁

    • kimmeister

And yet, she managed to not squint!

  • Sarah

Methinks it’s a tad too tight in the busticles, but still pretty.

    • Kitten Mittons

      That’s my only quibble, too.

      • Sarah

Considering that the dress was clearly made for someone with a smaller bust, she’s actually doing an admirable job of making hers stay in there, but they are doing a muffin top thing that they would probably rather not be doing.

        • Kitten Mittons

Such are the post-pregnancy mammaries. They do have a mind of their own, sometimes, which is why I’ll only quibble very quietly about it. That and she really does look lovely. I kind of love the nail color against that clutch.

          • Sarah

Ooh, didn’t even notice nails. I like ’em too!

    • Busticles = female equivalent of testicles? Love it.

    • demidaemon

I thought that too (my terminology was “booby”), but then I thought, it’s the BET awards. She probably looks downright classy compared to everyone else there, even with the boobiness.

    • Oekmama

She may be expressing milk/ breastfeeding and she probably needs to do the right side. These things happen to new moms. It’s actually more painful than uncomfortable white shoes…

  • In_Stitches

I actually think the white pump was the perfect choice for this dress. Any color would have been a visual distraction which is something this dress does not need. I’m with T & Lo entirely on the shape.

  • MartyBellerMask

Lilac shoes would be too “Easter Parade”.
But she does need different shoes because, well, look at those cramped toes. What is going on there??

  • teensmom99

Best white shoe deployment in all of red carpetry. Or maybe it’s just that KW has that extra style that makes things work.

  • Very pretty – glad she didn’t wear the matching shoes!

  • Anna

Does it look like my nana’s couch in her Florida room? Yes. Does Kerry look fabulous? Definitely.

  • NBG

Well, I guess she is not nursing because there’s no way in Hades that a lactating momma could wear that bodice and not be crying tears of pain.

It’s a great pattern but something is off in the shape of that dress. I’m fine on the shoes. They are not offending me the way certain other shoes do.

  • NMMagpie

She looks pretty but those shoes look painful.

  • 8daysaweek

She looks fantastic! I love the dress. It’s such a perfect summer look, although I wish the skirt were a little longer. I don’t love the proportions.
The poses make her look, to my eye, like she’s still slightly uncomfortable with her post-baby body, though. She looks fantastic, so it’s not that there’s any reason to, but I think a lot of mothers can relate to that feeling.

  • Gatto Nero

Except for the white shoes (and minor quibbles with the fit of the dress), this is just about pitch perfect.

  • You mean, “Who are these basic bitches in white on the red carpet.” Cause, man. It was like every other person was rockin’ white. White dress. White suit. White pants. Geez.

Meanwhile, Keri looks really pretty. I wished she wore colored heels. I’m so over the white heels/pumps trend.

    • MilaXX

You know folks love some white linen.

  • FibonacciSequins

I don’t mind the skirt, but the bodice doesn’t fit. Also hate the white shoes, especially the way they squash Kerry’s toes.

  • I was hoping for the orchid color, but was prepared for disappointment in the scroll-down. At least it wasn’t a flesh colored pump, or worse, some of those awful bootie things that are so inexplicably popular.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I know, right? Who wants to wear booties in summer? It’s a recipe for epic stankfoot.

  • shirab

I think summery, strappy sandals would have been nicer than pumps.

    • Wink

      Great minds… lol.

  • Wink

A sexy, strappy sandal would look better than the Barbie pumps.

  • Tami from Seattle

    Hee hee, “Lady Garden”

    • snevhead

I was just going to comment! Where I come from, “Lady Garden” means something quite different. As my cousin once asked me “when you do yoga, do you have to breathe through your lady garden?”.

      • Watts

Had the same thought. Have actually uttered the phrase, “I need to tend to my lady garden” before first bathing suit outing of the season.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Breathing through your lady garden sounds really difficult. 🙂

      • I’m intrigued – do you have to breathe through your lady garden when you do yoga?

  • Ozski

Beautiful and lovely as ever and, can I just say? I am just SO relieved I can’t see her pelvic bones! That seem to be a new trend that needs to go! Why must ladies insist that the world be their gynecologist?

  • Joanna

Orange pump would have been fantastic. Otherwise, I think she’s wearing this a million times better than the model.

  • Dino Bonačić

Lilac pump would be fab, but I really don’t mind the white. Seems lie the obv choice!

PS. I kinda get sick of these D&G Italian-lady dresses very easily. I need a Preen colourful print or a Missoni summertime dress. LADIES?! STYLISTS?! Please…

    • understateddiva

Seriously. Such a lazy print, when there are so many fabulous ones out there.

  • elemspbee

sorry but this is uninspired, stiff, and the shoes–i think her toes are on the verge of revolting! so ugly

    • visualbymimi

I agree and if you go to the store and touch this dress is really lacking in quality, I love D&G but not this time

  • nannypoo

I like the dress a lot in spite of the very heavy and stiff fabric. The print is beautiful. The shoes represent a lost opportunity.

  • Jessica Freeman

Her toes would very much like a better shoe as well. I love the dress for the event.

  • lexilexi

    Nursing boobs. Gorgeous summertime look.

  • Steven Elliott

This woman GAVE BIRTH a hot second ago. Bow down.

  • dress_up_doll

I’ve joined the tangerine pumped bandwagon! Either that, or a lilac pump.

  • Sophie

I’m just imagining slightly bigger shoes, she looks like she really had to stuff her feet into these ones. The top is too tight, but the print is pretty.

  • Denise Rambo

I love love love the print of that fabric!

  • ModernDowager

    pale blue sandals, please

  • Shawn EH

She’s a D&G superstar, totally rocking that dress, bell skirt and all!

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    WERQ. She looks gorgeous.

  • MannahattaMamma

Meh. I think she looks like she’s wearing a tea cosy.

  • ashtangajunkie

I really hate the shape of the skirt, but I love the pattern. Kerry Washington is winning.

  • marlie

I think Kerry looks beautiful. A simple dress enhanced by a beautiful print. I’m never going to be fully on board with white pumps, but these actually don’t bother me. And other than the lack of color on her lips, Kerry’s hair and makeup are *flawless.*

  • alyce1213

It’s not a particularly pretty floral, just okay. The whole thing is just okay, except the shoes, which are not good at all.
    Also, needs lipstick.

  • decormaven

Nice summer dress and I love that clutch! She looks classy and venue appropriate.

  • BLauDGaspode

The shoes first registered as lilac to my eyes. Must have been wishful thinking. I didn’t believe you they were white and had to scroll back up to double-check. Oh well. Agreed that the shape of the skirt is just too stiff and odd.

  • Laura Livingston

Pumps of any color are a bad choice with this dress. With so many gorgeous summery shoes/sandals to choose from and she goes to PUMPS? Bland Barbie Bridesmaid pumps? I hate the shape of the skirt, it makes her look wide-hipped and her wig looking hair.

  • Me, personalment, must have been traumatized somewhere, somehow, over the size of my feet as I refuse to wear white shoes; ever. EVER. As I age, I know my feet are not that big. Currently size 9.5. I honestly thought when first looked at this picture that it was for Madame Tussaud’s.

  • I wish female celbrities would stop with the “one hand on the hip” awkward – amatuer pose. Just relax!

  • Imasewsure

Pretty enough with a modern shape (which I don’t really like). Thanks for the flowers Kerry!! We needed them

  • Mona_Visa

Kinda has that too-small-yet-too-big-at-the-same-time thing going on, but overall, she looks very pretty.

  • Vtg Fashion Library

I don’t know, something about the seams are off, even on the model. Pretty print, but I’m not a fan.

  • E. D.

Sandals would have been cool, especially blue ones.

  • frannyprof

I like the *idea* behind this look. I don’t like how the dress fits and I wish she had chosen a different shoe.

  • Amel

Wish the skirt was cut a little slimmer – not sure a petite woman like Kerri can work a short bell skirt like that

  • Jennifer Schiller

I love the idea of the dress, and she always looks beautiful, but also so, so uncomfortable here. I mean the woman just gave birth, couldn’t her people have found something that allowed her rib cage to expand a little; she’s teensy it can’t be that hard.

  • demidaemon

I like the idea of a purple shoe. Certainly better than the white ones she has on. It’s a little booby for my tastes, hut considering the event, she is probably downright demure looking, so she gets a pass just this once.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I like a lovely floral print, and especially like this one on Kerry. It looks as if she went with color in the clutch and defaulted to white shoes.

  • e jerry powell

I was about to say. That is the most neutral lip Miss Kerry’s had in months; why she would rein it in this time around is a mystery.

  • Man Dala

She’s rocking that post-partum body. She looks fabulous.

  • understateddiva

I know Kerry likes her girly looks, but this one reads kind of Junior Miss to me.

  • It’s simple and lovely. She looks like a breath of fresh air. I call that a win!

  • quiltrx

Pretty little dress. Glad she didn’t drink the tacky Kool-Aid.

  • boweryboy

Cute, cute dress but it’s bit to youthful so, for me, she’s just barely pulling it off.

  • livesarah

I would love this if it wasn’t strapless. As is, I like it, but not enough to fret that I’ll never be able to afford one.

  • Oekmama

Yellow pumps would have killed it and collected the insurance money.
