IN or OUT: Jessica Paré at the Baume & Mercier ‘Promesse’ Launch

Posted on June 19, 2014

We’re not used to seeing her sport such a relaxed look. She usually goes for something severe.

The sandals are pretty summertime-cute, but the dress comes off a little shapeless and too complicated or overdesigned for its own good. But we do like the softness of the look overall. We’re not sure that pale pink is the best shade for her, though. We’re undecided. You guys do it this time.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! Soft and pretty, with a twist!

OUT! That’s one drab little table runner.

It had its share of defenders, but the majority vote on Kate Winslet’s wildly mismatched hat and dress was a big ol’ OUT.

I’m leaning towards an IN. I think that if the whatever you’d call it were scaled back a bit and restricted to one part of the dress, it would look a lot less fussy. And I think the coloring isn’t that great on her. But I still kinda like it for some reason.

  • Kevin L

In. It’s lovely and not too try-hard and she looks really at-home in it. Even don’t hate the shoes.

  • Danielle

In, the color is very soft and looks great on her.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

I like it, but I’d be curious about what the discs are made from. Somehow they dont look like fabric.

    • Alicia

You are right – they look quite stiff.

      • Sophie

        They rather look like leather.

  • Shawn EH

In! Shapeless dress, but not unflattering on someone so naturally shapely, and just the right kind of sheer.

  • blue808

More of an IN…overly complicated dress, but she (and her beautiful face) are making it work.

  • Plink

Yes, IN! She looks lovely and relaxed.

  • Jessica Freeman

As much as I love her head, I cannot with that dress. OUT.

    • evave2

I like the shoes, I think the dress looks uncomfortable to sit down in (what are the discs made of?) so OUT for me.
      But I like the shoes.
Also her make-up appears subdued or something and not making her look as beautiful as she is.

  • Mary Lauer

I like the color on her and the shoes are a definite win. But the fussy shapelessness (I didn’t even know that combination was possible!) makes this an OUT for me.

  • mjude

IN. it has a feeling of “groovy” to it.

  • Dagney

oh definitely IN! Even though the dress is technically “shapeless,” it has a smart cut to flatter the frame, instead of hanging like a boring old cloth.

  • jbontrager78

In. I think the dress is really cute. I see the point about it being overdone, but I just can’t hate on it. Don’t hate the shoes either. A definite in.

  • ktr33

Out: I hate that length sleeve on anyone under 80; always looks matronly and unflattering. The dress might be ok without the sleeves. Then the non-fitted shape with the dropped waist would look more summery and light. But, Blanche, it DOES have the sleeves. So, a weak Out.

  • Scimommy

I’m torn – love her head, hate her dress, meh on the shoes. I think I’ll sit this one out.

  • gsk241

IN! It looks kinda groovy without looking dated.

  • Dana F.

This would look much better on Kiernan Shipka.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I was just thinking the same thing!!!

      • MishaFoomin

Same here. Jessica is too old for that style of dress.

        • whaddami

much agreed. Either that, or someone more girly looking — Ms Paré is all woman, and this dress doesn’t show it off to her best effect. But hey, everyone needs to experiment sometimes!

    • Cynica

      My first thought.

    • Raspberry2012

Well, that’s true! I do love this on Jessica, but I think Kiernan would win that battle if it were between the two of them.

  • Mothra

I am going with In because of her facial expressions really add to the look.

  • Carleenml

In. I’m a sucker for this dress shape.

  • JR Labrador

Looks like it’s made from sheets of stickers. Out.

  • Bonnie B

In! I think she looks lovely

  • Sarah

I agree that it is too busy with so many webby panel bits. But she looks pretty, and the sandals are a welcome form of nekkid.

  • Zeee

I think its soft and pretty. I like it. IN

  • ShaoLinKitten

What are the disks on the dress? Large paillettes? Stiff fabric? I’m intrigued. It gives a soft-shaped dress an armor-like feel. For that reason, I give it an IN. I wish it were in a different color though. I like the shoes.

  • Grumpy Girl

A reserved in, because it helps sell/emphasize the watch, which is the point, right? (Echoes watch shape, while not overwhelming sight of actual watch. And is not Tiffany-esque blue — which would actually be much prettier. Or in mint.)

I think the color is a little too blah for her though. And those are my sleeves (ie woman with more substantial upper arms no one is sad to see covered), not hers.

  • smh4748

I think In. I like the idea of the dress, and the circle overlay is pretty and interesting, IMO. My quibble with it is that it seems too large for her, especially on the top half. It’s giving her a bit of linebacker shoulders going on, which is actually pretty incredible, given her body shape. But I still like the overall effect, and the dress itself.

  • Lorelei_D

IN! I LOVE her in pale pink.

  • Wink

IN. A bit complicated, but it’s interesting and she’s selling it.

  • pamplemousse

IN–I like the color! Agreed that it would look better on Kiernan, however.

  • Logo Girl

I think she looks charming in this. I’ve always been fond of those types of discs (are they luminescent?) and she is the right person for it.

  • StarburstLady

I like it a lot! I’d like it slightly more fitted at the waist, but beyond that, I think it’s a beautiful and interesting dress, and she looks lovely in it.

  • Julie Chase

In, it’s a weird dress but she looks amazing.

  • lunchcoma

I’m going to go with a marginal IN. It’s not perfect, but this is a real step forward for her.

When I saw the watch I figured it must be a watch-related event, since you never see a ladystar wear one otherwise. Yup, I was right.

    • Imasewsure

At least it wasn’t another one of the “wear my huge hideous Coach bag” events…. we can live with the watch…

      • lunchcoma

Oh, I don’t mind the watch a bit, and I’d find it refreshing if I saw a few more celebrities make a gesture toward real life.

The Coach bags were a travesty. I don’t know what the company thought it was doing, but that wasn’t what I’d consider good publicity.

    • Megan Kennedy

Aw, too bad. I thought the watch with such a girly dress was kind of chic.

      • lunchcoma

The shape of the dial picks up on the circular pattern on the dress too. I wouldn’t mind it if we saw a few more watches on red carpets, especially with less formal looks, but I suspect that’s as likely to happen as nude pumps going out of style.

  • Bert Keeter

If that dress was sleeveless then yes. Also fit a bit close would be better. With sleeves…no!

  • TropiCarla

In, I like it a lot. It would obscure the waist detail, but I might have added a belt for some color and shape.

  • rissa42210

It’s IN. Not commendable, but there’s nothing wrong with it.

  • Mailbtch

The longer I look at this the more adorable I’m finding it. And what a great color on her! IN!

  • sarcasmfont

Eh, tough one. Like the shoes, and the dress is cute enough, but might be better as sleeveless. Her hair and make-up are pretty though. An IN – nothing offensive, nothing overwhelmingly great.

  • frannyprof

IN. It needs something, but I don’t hate it.

  • LadyVimes

Out. I like the color (I think the camera flash is washing it out), but a.) the dress doesn’t fit her, b.) those sleeves are way too heavy, and c.) that skirt is a MONSTROSITY.

*ahem* I’m biased against those skirts that seem to be in style now. The little hem-flare. It looks tacked on. Like a drop-waist that wasn’t.

  • Imasewsure

IN but not fantastic… pretty enough

  • MissusBee

OUT. If it lacks luster on Miss Jessica, it’s hard to think who it would look good on.

  • trisker

Out. Dress looks made of NECCO wafers.

  • Stella Zawistowski

It just feels too much like a lace apron over a fishing net. OUT.

  • colleenjanel

IN. Not a runaway “in” but more of a “not out”. Needs a better fit and better sleeves, but she looks cute.

  • anonylind

She looks so much prettier than she usually does when she tries too hard. IN.

  • fursa_saida

IN. I don’t mind the dress’s complication, and I like how it feels fairly easy while still having a hint of structure with the seaming. I also like her with a cleaner face than usual.

  • Michele Morningstar

IN! She looks relaxed and comfortable. I like this less severe look for her. I also like that it’s a bit different without being all the way ‘out-there’.

  • shopgirl716

I love it. She looks great and relaxed.

  • Snoskred

I would not be surprised to find these are more of the Nudist – and if so, this is the version I like the best. :)

  • YoungSally

She’s doing the Lupita boob-cross pose from Vogue — is that Meta?

  • Phoenix

  • marlie

Her hair and makeup look really good, especially in the first and last pictures where she’s really smiling (instead of sucking in her cheeks and looking “sultry”). The sandals are cute, and the dress is ok, though it’s a little too colorless.

    Oh – “in.”

  • SuzyQuzey

IN. The more I look at it, the more I like it.

  • CLoverleaf

    In..but just barely.

  • Megan Kennedy

    In. Love the watch deployment.

  • Lisalady161

In, but only because she looks so cute and happy in it. That color does her no favors.

  • halleygee

In. I like the softness of this look on her. Pretty and summery.

  • crash1212

IN. Soft and shapeless is working for her.

  • uprightcitizen

IN for the dress. It’s unusual, but still flattering and pretty. We don’t see that a whole lot. A different color would be an improvement, but this isn’t terrible. OUT for the shoes. They’re really pretty and cute (and actually fit), but I don’t think they go with that dress at all. Something simple and kind of retro would have looked good.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Girl, that’s not your dress. Give it to Kiernan Shipka.

  • another_laura

In, but just barely. I have some concerns about the shoulder shape and details but the dress gives a good overall initial impression and fits nicely. The pale pink is most definitely not her color.

  • Michael_Jones

In. I like it. I think there’s something weird about that shape or fabric, but I’ll give it to her for an overall, slightly changed-up look.

  • Catherine

I actually love it! She looks cute and SEASONAL! It’s 90 here with 200% humidity, so that dress honestly looks just about perfect to me. Great color on her, and love the shoes. Major IN.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks fresh and pretty. The pale pink really lets her hair and face be the star of the look, even if it doesn’t do much for her skintone. I like the texture and bit of print in an otherwise boring (but appropriate) shoe, wish the sleeve was a bit shorter, but overall it’s an IN for me.

  • ashtangajunkie

In. She looks pretty, but the dress would be better without sleeves.

  • Lori

In. She looks looks pretty and it’s a nice change of pace for her.

  • Meri

In, I think. She’s selling me on it with her smile.

  • Hilde Kaiser

For me, the dress is an out, the shoes are an in. The shape of the dress makes her midsection look wider than it is.

  • NurseEllen

I would like this better if the circle cutouts went all the way around, and the side panels hadn’t been replaced by overgrown fishnet stocking material. But still, she looks good, and I can’t hate. IN.

  • In_Stitches

In on the virtue of how great everything from the neck up is working. I think the color is fabulous on her as well; it makes her look luminous. The dress itself IS shapeless and over-designed, but everything else is working, so she gets the IN.

  • BLauDGaspode

Can she be in, and the dress out? Because the dress is shapeless and kind of a mess, but her face and hair look good.

  • MannahattaMamma

OUT. She’s not designed for “kittenish ingenue.” But I love the shoes.

  • jason

I like the hair and makeup and shoes…..dress, not so much. Looks like a plastic doily.

  • Joanna

In. I think she looks good.

  • Heather

IN with a side of atta-girl. I think a move towards softer looks is a good thing for her and I think she looks good here.

  • mjmiller77

barely IN. I love the dress, but not on her. Wrong color, wrong shape. Great sandals!

  • Aidan B

IN, for being a great demonstration of a softer look working well for her.

  • LilyVanessi

OUT. It looks like a jumper. No one her age (in fact anyone too old to go to elementary school) should ever wear anything resembling a jumper. Cute shoes, though.

  • Rachel Cox O’Connor

ugh i cannot STAND the pee pee pose. Whyyyyyyyyy must everyone do it!

    • Alloy Jane

I think it helps with balance when you’re wearing heels.

  • Constant Reader

IN. Cute and interesting dress, sheer part is limited to mid-thigh down, gorgeous hair, face, and legs. Nothing earth-shattering, but it gets the job done.

  • Alicia

IN – purely because she is feeling it.

  • lilibetp

I think this is really pretty on her.

  • KinoEye

Soft and pretty suits her. IN.

  • GeoDiva

I’m going IN: It’s pretty and a nice change for her.

  • kbshee

Out, I keep seeing an apron and bib.

  • jtabz

In! I don’t love the fussiness of the dress, but she’s just so pretty in these softer looks.

  • breathlss79

Out. She’s statuesque and wasting it with this twee look.

  • kfizz

    Like… it’s all fine? But I don’t care.

  • Terri Terri

Thumbs up. A close one, because that dress is hard to love, but she looks lovely.

  • somebody blonde

In. She looks good. It’s not setting me on fire, but she does look good.

  • alyce1213

In. I like it, and I bet it’s stunning in person.

  • KiP07

I don’t find the cut particularly flattering for her, but even looking a bit less shapely she’s still pretty lovely. I’d say it is IN, but I hope that next time she goes for soft she goes in a different direction.

  • MinAgain

Is it suppsed to look like it’s made of soda can pop tops? Because that dress has “up-cycling” written all over it.

  • Kbear

Out. Overdesigned, pale and too “little girl” for her.

  • Alyssa

IN. Dress is too complicated, but this is one of her best public appearances in some time, so gotta give her positive encouragement.

  • conniemd

Out. I immediately flashed on lace doilies.

  • kerryev

In, on her and from the front. I think the overdesignyness actually works on the sleeves and the skirt. It did not need the netting side panels.

  • sweetlilvoice

In, it’s a good change for. And the shoes are cute.

  • boweryboy

OUT. It’s too twee for her own good, but it’s nice to see her branch out stylewise.

  • PinkyK

Out! That color is horrible on her!

  • AlexisPayne

In, something tells me this was a lot prettier out of the glare of the camera flashes.

  • lalahartma

Out. Unless we get better photos.

  • texashistorian

IN! She looks cute and fresh. Toe rings would have been a cute accessory (said the lady who’s never worn one in her life).

  • maretha2

IN! I don’t care for that color, but I do think it looks good on her. It’s a nice complement to her dark hair and gives her a soft look.

  • Jenna Marie

OUT. She looks pretty, but not stylish,

  • Daisy Walker

    OUT. It’s a doily.

  • Emily Smith

In I like the whole thing alot

  • quitasarah

Out. Would look better on Kiernan.

  • Belvane

IN. Everything except the nude toenails. A deep rose polish would have been nice.

    • decormaven

Thank you! It’s a great look, but a stronger color of polish on the toes would have been a HUGE improvement.

  • Gatto Nero

Out (reluctantly). She looks very sweet here, though the pinafore effect is not doing her any favors and makes this skew a little juvenile. The sleeve length is odd, too, and throws off the proportions even more.

  • numenah

In. Complicated but fun to look at more than once. (Incidentally, I’ve been shocked by how much hate is thrown at her by viewers on other sites. Thank God for the civility of TLo!)

  • CelandineM

IN, it’s pretty with some whimsy and yay, it looks summery. The pale color keeps the dress from looking as overworked as might actually be. I like her soft hair and makeup.

  • elemspbee

OUT. This is ugly, all around.

  • Meg

Out. Much too much like an apron.

  • suzq

In, for me. It’s a nice change of pace. It’s a fun dress.

  • Anna

This is the best I’ve seen Jessica look off the Mad Men set – she looks lovely and feminine!

  • Sofia

her personal best imo. i don’t like the severe looks on her because her facial features are already so strong. the effect is rather awkward. but here, i am digging the juxtaposition of that strong face with the soft, feminine clothes and styling. and i covet those shoes.

  • Joyce VG

OUT this look is too twee. Her legs are in an IN though. Wow.

  • housefulofboys

In, based almost entirely on her accessories. I love the sandals, and have a flat pair almost like them which are among my most favorite shoes ever (Italian, hand-made helps), and I have a thing for watches and could see hers on my arm in a hot minute. Also, I kind of like the pale pink with her dark hair, although the shade is a little off for her skin. Dress is cute, now if she could just practice posing with her mouth closed.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

IN, because she looks lovely and summer-y

  • titaness25

In. Mostly because I love her hair- she usually goes for a slicked-back, austere german nanny hairdo that I hate. The outfit itself is pretty and she looks glowy.

  • Skippymom1

That’s pink? No better than what I thought it was, which was white. She needs color somewhere. Nails, jewelry, clutch? And the sandals are cute, but don’t count as much with this.

  • random_poster

IN. It may be shapeless, but I much prefer that to the other extreme of too-tight that so many more starlets wear.

  • msdamselfly

Out Color looks very bland and not really liking hair and makeup

  • Alloy Jane

I hate to vote her OUT because she looks so youthful here, and I generally feel like her red carpet outfits make her look too severe. So while I love the styling, that dress looks like a shower curtain or bath mat and can be nothing but a resounding OUT.

  • Therese Bohn

In — I do wish it was a stronger color, but she looks great and it’s nice to see her hair down and with pretty makeup.

  • Man Dala

IN. The close up detail in the dress is gorgeous.

  • Yoshio

OUT because I won’t vote boring IN

  • megalomanic

IN. Purely for being summer-approrpiate in a sea of suede pumps and heavy fabrics.

  • demidaemon

I actually kind of love it. I think this is the softest and prettiest she has ever looked. IN.

  • appliquer

    Out, bad color.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

In. Pretty. I like her looking less severe.

  • Jangle57

My first though was out, mostly because of the color but I came back later and on second look, still think the color is blah but mostly it’s ok so IN

  • Esz

I think its an IN – its a little bit ‘thickening’ but its fresh and fun overall.

  • Shelby

In. She looks pretty, even if some of the details are off.

  • Sophie

In. I’d like it just a bit darker, but it looks good overall.

  • French_Swede

IN. She does a great job showing off the watch, too.

  • Rudaini

IN. I love how calm and at ease she looks. She’s perfectly comfortable. That’s a lovely looking watch on her too. Don would approve it.

  • DagnyReardon

    Out. Drab and lifeless.

  • LJCdoc

Out. I don’t hate the shape that much, but the color makes it very drab (to steal fro DagnyReardon).

  • mommyca

IN…. She looks lovely and relaxed…

  • PumpkintheCat

IN. She looks pretty, and the subdued colour of the dress makes that watch pop (the whole point of a B&M launch I would think). Me likey.

  • Lisa_Co

When the sandals are the only thing I like, I’ve got to go with OUT.

  • ReadBarbara

Out — that dress makes her look boxy and large which until today were the two words least likely to be used about Jessica Pare. Her head is pretty, though.

  • formerlyAnon

In. Not a special look, but it looks nice on her.

  • ankali

The dress doesn’t do much for me, but it’s inoffensive. Her hair and makeup look great, and I like the shoes. IN it is.

  • MilaXX

OUT. That dress is a bit too beach cover up for me. Surprisingly this is the first pair of naked sandals I’ve really like and this is the blandest dress to showcase them. Pair those shoes with a bold, vibrant color.

  • Richard

This is one of her better looks, this year. IN IN IN IN.

  • Fuchsiaforever

OUT. The dress is wearing HER. She’s not wearing (nor rocking, nor owning) the dress. Plus the dress is way too costume-y. She basically looks like a mannequin. And who wants to look like a manequin?

  • Danielle West

Out. That dress looks like a smock.

  • livesarah

In. Initial instinct was out, based on the colour and the shape, but from some angles it looks simply elegant and comfortable, with the shoes adding interest without being focus-pulling. She looks quite lovely.

  • Bozhi

IN. I love the dress and the shoes.

  • GillianHolroyd

Out. Tablecloth or bedspread, can’t decide.

  • lahallita

In. Youthful, fresh, and has some personality.

  • Brittany

    In! Soft and pretty.

  • Julie Parr

In. She looks more Megan-pretty than Jessica-red-carpet-severe.

  • Dorothy & Michael n/a

She looks pretty, but I’m getting a ‘communion host’ vibe from that dress.

  • Vivi N

Gonna go with OUT because the color of the dress sorta blends with her skin complexion. Also, the sandals don’t go with the dress.

  • Monabel

There is something stiff and harsh about this dress, despite the color. No.

  • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

an easy OUT for me. I want to like it, but I really can’t. Too many separate panels, and the neckline especially bugs.

  • queeniethebold

In. She looks lovely. Relaxed, soft, really nice.

  • CatherineRhodes

    IN. I actually like it.

  • julnyes

Definitely IN. The design of the dress takes it away from being a twee look. I especially like her hair and make-up here.

  • StrandedFashionista

IN. It kind of reminds me of Paco Rabane from the 1960s.

  • Deborah Lipp

She looks gorgeous but not because of the dress. Out.

  • nycfan

Shoes and the relaxed hair push me towards IN.

  • Mona_Visa

IN. Pretty, but not “wear it to Church” boring. And the shoes kinda tipped it over to the positive side.

  • mayanempire

  • Raspberry2012

I’ll give it an IN. It’s relaxed yet pretty, and given the heat in the past couple of days, it doesn’t make me want to sweat just looking at it. Plus, I love that lipstick! She and I have almost the exact same coloring, so I’d love to know what shade that is and who makes it.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Very OUT. It makes her look squishy around the middle (waistless? is that a word) and the color isn’t her friend. Love the shoes, though.

  • Betsy

  • Tracy_Flick

OUT. The stiff plastic look of the fabric reminds me of 1970s outdoor furniture, and the shape is apron-adjacent. The color is washing her out and the toe-gripping looks painful.

  • Kelly

Out, I guess. I like the shoes and the relaxed summer hair, but the dress ultimately is just too drab and washed-out.

  • Gorengirl

    In- very pretty and summery

  • judybrowni

Don’t care: but can she be gone from the last of Mad Men, please?

  • sleepycat

OUT! You hit it on the nose, discount table-runner

  • Mousentrude

She looks relaxed, comfortable and happy, and makes me want that dress, even though it’s not remotely my colour or style. So that’s an IN.

  • Reality TV Casting

    in it’s cute and fresh

  • Columbinia

OUT. A lovely woman made dowdy by a table runner.

  • GTrain

  • Janet B

  • bailey_ann_dbk

    IIIIIIIN love the discs

  • LMGordon

Hate these two trends in general – “sport luxe” (WTF?) and perforated. Still she’s wearing them like the fashion mags say, but the clincher is those shoes, which don’t go at all. Plus, she doesn’t look comfortable with the see-threwness (is that a word?). Out.

  • JynxTheCat

    Rock solid IN for me.
