The subtle hints of caucasian really make this dress pop, don’t you find?

SERIOUSLY, PEOPLE?

And the shame of it is, this is a gorgeous dress.

      WORST illusion-that-isn’t-illustion EVER.

      • jen_vasm

Yep, more like ‘delusion’. Seriously gives me the sads. For same, Kaufmanfranco. You get a year of side-eyes for this.

      • Kent Roby

And she’s standing in front of the worst illusion of a brick wall!

        • http://lippsisters.com Roberta Lipp

I don’t know–it’s backstage at Radio City. That could be a brick wall.

          • Kent Roby

It’s paper wrapping a wall; the joints aren’t realistic at the corners

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

nope. she hasnt looked right too me in years. I love her, I do, but she has dressed nothing but bat shit awful since the oscars and that horrible bolero.

    • Kristina Sadowski

Wow, that’s terrible! I didn’t notice it as much on stage, but now that’s all that I see.

      • Trent

Right? When she was performing last night (exquisitely) I didn’t even notice the “illusion” netting, but this is just embarrassing. What was her stylist thinking?

    • Ashleigh

why would she even put that on?! so many “whys” !

    • LadyVimes

      Ugh. That mesh is horrific.

    • lunchcoma

Oh, wow. I’m assuming this is one of those cases where the illusion netting looked better under different lighting?

      • xmixiex

        That’s what I’m thinking…

      • KateShouldBeWorking

        It could hardly look worse.

      • Aurumgirl

I thought that too. It’s meant to be invisible and probably accomplishes that on stage–but off stage, it’s embarrassing. Makes a good argument for the death of illusion netting once and for all, though, so perhaps Jennifer will not have suffered in vain.

        • formerlyAnon

God you’d think. But the hint-or-more-than of nudity isn’t going away as a design element, so illusion netting is going nowhere.

    • SuzyQuzey

Terrible dress for her. Those mesh panels are awful! Also, this is a dress for standing up only. After she stood up, the paillettes were all wonky.

    • gabbilevy

Oh honey. Im sure they would have replaced the mesh if you’d just asked nicely. Or maybe you pissed them off and this is them getting back at you? Either way, live and learn.

    • Alyssa

Wow, that is inexcusable. If you can’t change the illusion netting to match your skin tone, get a different dress!

    • Glam Dixie

Subtle hints of, No girl, what were you thinking?

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Right! Was NO ONE thinking?? I don’t know how this could even happen.

        • Glam Dixie

I mean, it is called ILLUSION netting, and not OBVIOUS netting for a reason.

          • demidaemon

It’s ironic how we are all able to spot it and point it out all the time, right?

    • KendraMR

      Yuk, yuk, yuk!

    • kimmeister

Uh, uh . . . that particular shade of orange lipstick is totally working for her.

    • B_C_J

Hair & makeup are gorgeous. Had the illusion fabric been a better match to her skin tone, this would have been fabulous.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I agree. This could have been a WERQ.

      • Little_Olive

Why, why ask for better illusion netting? I don’t get the “dress, interrupted” part. It certainly wouldn’t have been the most original, but who cares when she looks good?

    • mellorcr

This dress also creased and rumpled across her hips when she sat down and the crease stayed in when she stood up again.

      • WendyD

I couldn’t unsee that last night either!!! The mismatched illusion netting looks like they just ran out of silver materials.

    • Diva in 4 Inch Heels

Yeah. KaufmanFranco could and should have taken the time to think about matching the color of mesh to Ms. Hudson’s gorgeous skintone. Love her hair and makeup.

    • Chameleon

This was sooo close to being a killer dress. Newsflash fashion world: Not everyone has the same skin tone!

    • Yolanda

So you’re telling me they couldn’t run down to Mood and get some illusion netting that was her skin tone?! Wow!

    • Danielle

Someone should seriously shake everyone at Kaufmanfranco. HARD.

      • demidaemon

        VIGOROUSLY!

    • CanIbeFrank

She is just so jaw-droppingly gorgeous, who cares what she’s wearing? (though I agree…..)

      • DuBey2

Oh, her hair, makeup and expression are so beautiful — and the color (Not of the netting) is very flattering to her.
Fire the stylist; KEEP the hair and makeup team!

      • Anglow

And I agree with you, CanIBeFrank. You said it perfectly.

    • ashtangajunkie

This couldabin a WERQ and a half.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      Oy.

    • clairebbbear

I wouldn’t have liked the dress even with the illusion panel in the right colour. The silver does nothing for her. And what’s going on with the “can’t decide whether it wants to be one-shoulder” neckline?

      • kimmeister

The neckline is symmetrical, with illusion netting on both sides. I think what you’re seeing is the difference in the lighting. It’s pretty clear on the model.

        • clairebbbear

Oh yeah, but it seems to have shifted around by her wearing it. As PPs have said – clearly not a dress for wearing, if you’re planning to sit or move around.

    • boweryboy

Wow. It’s like they got the thickest support hose they could find that is furthest from her skin tone to use as illusion netting.

      • decormaven

Seriously. That is Ol’ Rolled Down Gramma Hose there.

    • mjude

did not notice during her performance. but good grief…

    • Tracie Rivera

      Her stylist should be fired….

    • Annmarie Kane

WTF? And what is the dead eyed Kim Kardashian Real Doll look. Is it a thing now?

      • deelup

I think because expressions make lines on faces… And god forbid that happens.

    • j_am

What a shame, she looks LOVELY otherwise.

    • FibonacciSequins

Because that panel is “flesh” color, it just looks like they didn’t have enough paillettes to cover everything. Disappoint. It should have either been sheer or matched to Jennifer’s skin tone.

      I love her pixie cut.

    • Scimommy

Who signed off on this? Did Jennifer see what they were putting on her? Does the netting actually look darker in real life? So many questions.

    • MilaXX

The sad thing is she looked good sitting down and when she stood up all you could see was that illusion netting on the side. Why did no one think to get netting that actually matched her skin?

      • Alloy Jane

I love your optimism that this dress comes in minority flavored illusion netting.

        • formerlyAnon

I suspect someone thought that it was the darker-skinned version. Some of the netting worn by us fish belly girls is visible in photos because it’s too light, in some dresses. I bet she had a fitting in an almost-dead white netting version and some genius darkened it by guess or against a photo, then sent it over thinking “all fixed.”

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Why did nobody do this netting in a sparkly silver to match the dress?

I mean seriously that is some gorgeous silver wickety wack, who would think that illusion netting in beige or any shade other than silver was appropriate? It is like a massive needle scratch. Awful, regardless of the skin tone of the wearer. :(

        • formerlyAnon

I think it’s part of that weird thing where they get these kazillion dollar dresses to wear to big events and everybody pretends they don’t need alteration because it’s just not done on loaners. Even though it makes the wearer and the designer look bad, or at least stupid.

    • BLauD

      Man alive. What a disappointment!

    • TRSTL

I rewatched this performance again and that netting matched perfectly on stage under the lights. In these flash photos, not so good but it was the look on stage and television that mattered. I thought she looked and sounded flawlessly.

      • DuBey2

        This x 1,000.

      • formerlyAnon

        Well, that’s reassuring.

    • JR Labrador

      Sigh. Illusion netting ruins everything.

    • Wink

This wasn’t a good choice for her — for various reasons — and everyone is blaming her stylist and/or the designer. They are only partially responsible. Jennifer is the one wearing the dress, so I can only assume that SHE has the final word regarding what she wears — for better or worse. She should have pitched a diva fit, declined this ‘flesh panel’ dress, and asked for something else!

    • PastryGoddess

Why does she insist on wearing clothes that make her look like a bobblehead? And the netting is a joke.

    • Audrey Lee

Holy shit. If this were just the fabric or a fun contrasty color instead of FUCK AWFUL illusion netting this would be dead gorgeous.

    • demidaemon

BLARGH. So dumb. What a waste. At least pretend to try, stylists and designers. JESUS.

    • http://lippsisters.com Roberta Lipp

      Girl, that’s not your “flesh.”

      • Introspective

        FTW

    • warontara

      I LOVE YOU GUYS!!

    • warontara

I must admit, I’m apt to be too hard on anything she wore for is performance. She had no place here other than to continue perpetuating the “no one will see a show unless they can connect it to a Hollywood star” attitude that’s taking over Broadway.

That said, she really is a very attractive person but has zero sense of style.

    • Kristi Mitchell

It looks like she was too big for the dress so they had to add the panels at the last minute to make it fit, and she’s not a heavy girl by any stretch at all. But as a formerly heavy girl (Same as Jen – of which I am in teh same category) I would have said hell no. And looking at it closely it looks like they DID try to make it close to her skin tone, although they failed miserably. The netting looks like a darker shade than most illusion netting we see in pics on other stars. Either way it’s totally terrible

    • Verascity

Oh, no. :( She would look phenomenal in that otherwise.

    • bunnydiet

This all has to do with the image she has of herself.

    • SugarSnap108

I have now seen the one thing worse than illusion netting. It is called netting.

I almost spat tea at “subtle hints of caucasian.”

    • MichelleRafter

Saw her in this last night, didn’t notice the netting on screen. However, while this looked OK when she was sitting on the bed, when she stood up, the sequins were doing weird things to her torso=not good.

    • mmebam

Her Kaufmanfranco choices have always been questionable. Perhaps the two need to take a break from each other.

    • NBG

For once and for all can we agree that “nude” is not a color? There is no such thing as nude-colored fabric since we are not all the same damn color. Sorry. This bugs me to no end. I stand around lingerie departments yelling at bras labeled “nude” as the color.

    • Jessie Melcher Brown

For something that expensive is it really that hard to pick a color that matches?

    • Mothra

It looked so lovely til I saw those pantyhose panels. and the missing sequin.

    • CommentsByKatie

She wanted to wear it, it wasn’t her size, they couldn’t get more of the fabric, so they added an ‘illusion’ strip that isn’t working at all. Maybe it would have been better in silver? *scratches head*

    • e jerry powell

Inconsistency in the paillettes between the two versions is so disorienting.

    • Imasewsure

Looks like a gorgeous dress that she grew out of…

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

      AUGH.

    • sk8tfan

I remember watching a documentary on a ballet school competition, and the one black contestant’s mom had to buy illusion material, hand dye it, and remake the dress because the illusion netting for the tutu didn’t come in the teenager’s skin tone. That mom had no money but more sense than this gal, who can amply afford to have a gown custom made in the appropriate skin tone. I love Jennifer dearly but it’s pretty clear by now she has no taste whatsoever, and neither do her people.

    • d4divine

I barely heard her singing because I was shocked by the illusion horror. To make matters worse, the netting was too loose. She should have called Rhianna’s people. I can’t believe I just typed that….

    • A Shiny O’Connor

TLo GOLD! Still waiting for the Irish version of ‘nude’ to surface in a shoe – off-white with sporadic freckling.

    • lilazander

I wonder whther there is a way to adjust this dress for her. I guess it’s a for-caucassians-only dress, a racist dress, so to say.

    • LiliLynch

Was anyone else bothered/baffled by why she was in a sparkly gown while the others in the musical number were in costume? I was confused!

    • Mailbtch

How hard would it be to customize this with nude mesh panels that actually appear nude on her skin tone??? Ugh!

    • http://lippsisters.com Roberta Lipp

Has anyone mentioned this yet–the construction of the dress makes for a precarious visual–the neckline doesn’t quite sit evenly on her. Which, (trust me on this), is an uneven boob thing, or the illusion of one, and it’s something we all desperately try to avoid.
Also, I just watched the show last night. It wasn’t a great choice to perform that song in. I get it, Ms. Ross, you’re swooping your diva down to be with the people, but you’re not doing that costume thing. OR, you could have selected a glimmering glamouring gown that had some softness; some flow or warmth; to offer the slightest feeling of comfort and connection when singing to those children.

    • TLJezebel

Were the illusion panels even necessary? The dress is gorgeous otherwise.

    • marlie

This dress is really beautiful, but they screwed the pooch with her. If they couldn’t remake the dress with the appropriate-toned illusion netting, then they shouldn’t have put her in this dress.

    • Pablo

Are her teeth too big for her mouth? Seriously stop with that pose.

    • EEKstl

      Consider me baffled.

    • OhSheila

It really is a great dress and they really should have chaged the lining.

    • AthenaJ

I hope Jennifer was insulted, her skin tone is beautiful and that illusion netting is just so wrong on her, it is the color of my Spanx at home!
